What is Biblical Counseling? (Part 1)

The inspiration of Scripture is defined as the supernatural and divine work of the Holy Spirit in the writers of the Scriptures (Word of God). The word inspired means “breathed out of God” and, therefore, it is God speaking to humanity.  The writers of the Scriptures were carried by the power of the Holy Spirit in their recordings and writings which are the very breath of the Word of God (1 Peter 1:20-21).  The Holy Spirit used gifted human authors and led each of them to communicate exactly what He intended from the very mouth of God.  The Holy Scriptures is God speaking and therefore God-breathed.  Since the Scriptures are the very breath of God, it is useful in teaching, training in righteousness, and equipping all Believers (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

The inerrancy of Scripture states the Holy Scriptures is without error and truthful in all of its teachings.  God’s Word is truth because of the doctrine of inspiration.  Every word of God is perfect and pure (Proverbs 30:5a).  The Scriptures speak accurately and clearly in all that is written. Charles Rylie states “God is true (Romans 3:4); the Scriptures were breathed out by God (2 Tim. 3:16); therefore, the Scriptures are true (since they came from the breath of God who is true).  As the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy states, the complete work of the Scriptures is inerrant, being free from all falsehood, fraud, or deceit.  Most importantly, it is true because of the doctrine of inspiration coming from the very breath of God.

The authority of Scripture means that the Word of God has the supreme rule in what I think, believe, and live.  The Scriptures reveal the attributes of God and created man in His image. Authority is defined as one who is master, one in power, and able to give orders or commands for others to follow and obey.  It is written in Romans 13:1 that even governing authorities are established by God.  With this understanding, God’s Word is the rule that humankind must follow and obey.  The works of men in false ideologies fade, but I am confident even if the grass fades withers, the flowers fade, but the word of our God will stand forever (Isaiah 40:8).

What is Biblical Counseling?

Biblical counseling is interpersonal one-on-one discipleship within the context of the local church. It is not based on the wisdom of men, therapy, or psychology, but it is based on God’s Word as the ultimate source of truth and restoration for the believer in Christ.

Faith Biblical Counseling defines biblical counseling as "the process where the Bible, God’s Word, is related individually to a person or persons who are struggling under the weight of personal sin and/or the difficulties with suffering, so that he or she might genuinely change in the inner person to be pleasing to God".

1. The Bible is sufficient for life in that, when properly interpreted, it reveals to the believer all things necessary for one to understand his need for Christ. 2. The Bible is the authoritative source with which all truth claims—including claims made by science and history—must be evaluated. As a result, we must reject all counseling theories that use presuppositions, principles, and/or methodologies that are inconsistent with the proper interpretation of the biblical text.  3. Third, genuine heart change is totally dependent on the ministry of the Holy Spirit.  

Sufficiency of Scripture and Biblical Counseling

The relationship of the inspiration, inerrancy, and authority of Scripture together is God speaking, therefore, there is no error, and the Scriptures has complete authority over my life.  As the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy states, the confession of the full authority, infallibility, and inerrancy of Scripture is vital to a sound understanding of the whole of the Christian faith and this confession should lead to increasing conformity to the image of Christ. And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe (1 Thes. 2:13). The relationship of all three is critical in understanding theological truths.

The sufficiency of scripture states the Holy Bible (Word of God) has everything we need to live life honoring to God. The Word of God is true and we can be encouraged to live in the blessed hope of Christ Jesus- by the power of the Holy Spirit when we put our trust in God.  God gifts all believers with the Holy Spirit which indwells the believer and empowers all believers to live God-fearing lives, know Him, and serve Him (1 Peter 1:3).  The word of God is alive and active, sharper than any double-edged sword.  The Word of God, therefore, able to divide, judge the thoughts, and discern the attitudes of the heart (Hebrews 4:12).  It is true wisdom to turn to the God of the Scriptures in all matters of life.

The sufficiency of Scripture plays a vital role in biblical counseling. As Christ followers, the Word of God is the firm and sole authority we must turn to in our lives.  As a biblical counselor, my role is to exhort and encourage others to live according to Scriptures.  The same Spirit which lives in me indwells other believers. I am confident the Spirit of truth will teach other believers about Jesus Christ as Christ promised in John 16:12-13.  The Word of God is truth and it will do the work of sanctifying believers by the truth (John 17:17).  

Integrationists or Christian Psychologists do not believe the Scriptures are enough, therefore, they will integrate the Scriptures with secular psychology.  Eric Johnson is a Christian Psychologist who believes the Scriptures only address doctrine and is only able to bring people to salvation. He coined the term salvific doctrinal sufficiency. He did not believe the Scriptures could help believers in day-to-day life.

All mankind is made in the image of God and the Scriptures is the authoritative source that we draw upon in all matters.  It also has a methodology and practice of how to help mankind through all issues of life. The precepts of the Lord are right, and commands of the Lord are radiant in giving light to the eyes (Psalm 19:8).  The illumination of the Scriptures is how we should look at life.  This is the lens that we must use to view the world. It can diagnose sin issues by the power of the Holy Spirit in sanctification.  As a biblical counselor, I can support and walk with counselees in one-on-one discipleship. Just like any secular or integrated system, we have a complete counseling system (the Word of God) to help others walk in the spirit and live lives glorifying God.

Can you pray for me? I've been committing sexual sin for years. I desperately try to repent and stop, but I keep returning to sin. I have tried confessing to others & practical methods to break habits. I am beside myself with terror that I'm unsaved. I know God is powerful enough to save me, but I also know the saved bear fruit. I BEG God to help me stop, but I've been praying that for years, sometimes in total hysteria. I don't know what else to do. If I'm saved why won't he help me? Thank you.

I’ll definitely pray, and you’re not alone. I’ve felt how powerful the temptation to sin is, even when you know with every fiber of your being that it’s wrong. But God is more powerful. The fact that you feel that way is a good sign that His power is working in you. Dead people can’t feel pain. God is letting you feel that to know there is something wrong that needs to change.

We can’t change in our own power, just saying to ourselves “this is wrong this is wrong don’t do this.” The Sword of the Spirit needs to be applied to us to reveal what our hearts are craving. Then we exchange that craving with a desire for God and put on practical obedience to His Word.

Im such a bad writer. Like I'm a good writer but I'm a bad writer like I have good instincts but i cant rein them in. I cant focus them. A good writer dispenses words in one tight concentrated beam of light. Pure and undiffusing. Wrote yesterday how i feel like im in a grain silo and the clicking sussuration of words like wheat against wheat around me, how overwhelming sitting down to write feels rn. It's like I've been writing since I was like 9 and in that entire time I feel like it's just been a process of dragging off the chaff and understanding what I'm actually aiming for, what the marrow is beneath the fat. IMO! you can't just want to write about x and be done with it, it has to be writing about x as a means to write about y. I hate that i'm comfortable as i'll ever be in prose but i can't wrap my head around poetry. Creative nonfiction but not fiction. Fiction but not two stanzas, AABC ACBC. And oh my god writing LYRICS is like pulling teeth for me. Screams into a child-sized bucket full of ice water like they give to horses on hot days on the farm

CBCEX traz impacto de políticas no comércio exterior

Tax free e propostas de mudanças na legislação vigente foram destaques do encontro

Sob a coordenação de Rubens Torres Medrano, os membros da Câmara Brasileira do Comércio Exterior (CBCEX) da Confederação Nacional do Comércio de Bens, Serviços e Turismo (CNC) promoveram a primeira reunião ordinária do ano, excepcionalmente, em formato virtual, no dia 27 de agosto. Na abertura, o coordenador-geral das Câmaras Brasileiras do Comércio e Serviços, Luiz Carlos Bohn, ressaltou a importância do encontro para a manutenção das relações e trabalho de acompanhamento das pautas pertinentes ao setor do comércio exterior. A reunião contou ainda com a participação da Gerente da Assessoria das Câmaras Brasileiras do Comércio e Serviços (ACBCS), Andrea Marins, que enfatizou o acompanhamento das proposições em andamento e o alinhamento entre as Câmaras, garantindo que os processos fluam de forma eficiente e integrada.

Medrano pontuou que, ao longo do ano, houve destaque para a defesa de interesses do setor do comércio exterior no âmbito das novas regras de importação pelo Porto Seco de Dionísio Cerqueira, que entraram em vigor em Santa Catarina, além da inclusão das despesas de capatazias na base de cálculo do ICMS.

Tax free

Otavio Leite, consultor da presidência da Fecomércio-RJ, trouxe um panorama do modelo tax free, incluído no novo substitutivo da reforma tributária, que consiste no reembolso de impostos pagos nas compras feitas por turistas estrangeiros.

“É um enorme passo para incrementarmos as vendas no comércio e impulsionarmos ainda mais o turismo internacional. O tax free será mais um atrativo para os viajantes estrangeiros”, afirmou Otavio, ressaltando que o programa do tax free já vem sendo praticado, e gerando divisas em inúmeros países pelo mundo afora.

Otavio Leite apresentou dados de estudo realizado pelo Instituto Fecomércio de Pesquisas e Análises (IFec RJ), que mostra o impacto positivo no consumo no comércio fluminense, caso o sistema seja implantado no País. A avaliação, mediante projeções feitas após entrevistas com 866 turistas estrangeiros no Rio de Janeiro, é que, estima-se, praticamente dobraria o volume total estimado de compras feitas no Estado por visitantes de outros países, passando de US$ 212 milhões por ano para US$ 411 milhões por ano.

“Estamos trabalhando ao lado da CNC e da Diretoria de Relações Institucionais para consolidar a aprovação da proposta no Senado. O Brasil não pode perder essa chance”, acrescentou Otavio.

Propostas legislativas

Felipe de Miranda Oliveira, assessor de Relações Institucionais da CNC, apresentou a assessora Jenifer Freitas Rodrigues da Silva, dupla que atuará no acompanhamento legislativo das pautas temáticas da CBCEX.

Os assessores apresentaram o andamento de pautas como o PL nº 2.210/2022, que altera a lei de patentes, tendo Felipe comentado que “estamos acompanhando no sentido de fazer com que as nossas empresas possam ter o seu trâmite de importação, exportação mais facilitado a partir de agora”. Medrano reforçou a importância de sua aprovação para garantir rapidez nas “decisões e no julgamento de pedidos de patentes”.

Debateram também o Projeto de Lei nº 1.748/2011, que estabelece diretrizes para as condições laborais dos funcionários brasileiros contratados ou transferidos para o exterior. O projeto estipula que a legislação trabalhista vigente nos contratos será a do país onde os serviços são executados, enquanto a legislação previdenciária aplicável permanecerá sendo a brasileira.

“Ainda existem muitos detalhes hoje aqui no País que engessam e tornam o profissional brasileiro menos competitivo, principalmente nas custas trabalhistas, mais pesadas que a legislação do exterior”, analisou Felipe.

Sobre o PL nº 554/2022, que dispõe sobre a concessão de financiamento e de equalização de taxas de juros vinculados à exportação de bens nacionais de alto valor agregado, Felipe frisou que a DRI tem se empenhado na pauta. “Entendemos que pode ser um mecanismo que traga benefícios às nossas empresas representadas”, disse.

Outros projetos de lei foram debatidos, incluindo assuntos sobre cobrança de Imposto sobre Exportação em casos comprovados de produtos e insumos no mercado interno decorrente de exportações excessivas; programas de conformidade tributária e aduaneira no âmbito da Secretaria Especial da Receita Federal do Brasil do Ministério da Fazenda, incluindo a pauta de devedor contumaz e as condições para fruição de benefícios fiscais, entre outros.

Nova esperança no envelhecimento: investigadores identificam mecanismos que potenciam células cancerígenas

Um investigador do Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde (i3S) integrou a equipa que identificou mecanismos do envelhecimento que ajudam a transformar as células do sistema imune em células cancerígenas, foi hoje revelado.

Em comunicado, o instituto da Universidade do Porto esclarece que o investigador José Pedro Castro integrou a equipa de cientistas da Harvard Medical School que desvendou os mecanismos do envelhecimento que dão origem a linfomas de células B.

A investigação, publicada na revista Nature Aging, "abre portas a novas estratégias farmacológicas de prevenção".

Comparando os genes de animais novos e animais velhos com e sem linfoma, os investigadores descobriram que "com o envelhecimento forma-se um subtipo de células B que são maiores e mais clonais (homogéneas)".

Citado no comunicado, o investigador José Pedro Castro explica que a formação deste subtipo de células B acontece em duas fases.

Numa primeira fase, as células normais do sistema imune passam a células ABC, isto é, células associadas ao envelhecimento, e depois, ao interagirem entre si e transformarem-se em ACBC (células B clonais envelhecidas) possuem "todo um programa de cancro".

"São células biologicamente muito mais envelhecidas que a idade do próprio animal e têm capacidade de divisão, proliferação e invasão de outros tecidos, são também altamente inflamatórias e isto é um grande problema para os tecidos", indica.

Para comprovar as características destas células, os investigadores injetaram-nas em ratinhos novos que, como consequência, "morreram precocemente com cancro".

"Foi incrível constatar que começaram a morrer 30 dias após a injeção e dois meses e meio após o início da experiência, apenas 50 por cento dos animais estavam vivos", conta José Pedro Castro.

Posteriormente, os investigadores recorreram a dados genómicos publicamente disponíveis de sangue e outros tecidos humanos, e encontraram “as mesmas assinaturas ACBC a aumentarem com a idade, especialmente em indivíduos com elevada clonalidade de células B”.

Tal, acredita José Pedro Castro, “pode abrir caminho para novos biomarcardores de cancro ou outras doenças do envelhecimento”.
