felix is a pretty much "here for business (and maybe entertainment) only" if jisung wasn't paying him, he probably won't be here at all. and since jisung can spend tens of thousands of dollars just to go to an exhibit, we can only imagine how much felix is getting paid—it's a fulltime job 🤩👩‍🦯

A question for you! I believe you knit?

Any projects you'd like to share or progress you've made?

okay so I was leaving this in my inbox all week because I was supposedly close to finishing a project and I wanted to share photos of it all finalised and pretty, but also the dodgy-ass yarn I was using kinda turned it into a botch job so I’ve just had to unravel many many hours of work and I won’t be able to re-make it until I’ve stretched and washed the yarn so it stops messing up the tension and leaving giant holes in the blanket

so my whole mood in regards to knitting is currently >:c

on the plus side though! I’m still having a whole lot of fun spinning yarn from scratch! and I recently got my hands on a free bag of alpaca fleece and it’s so damn soft, oh my gods, I carded it so it’s all de-knotted and it’s so fluffy and soft and aaaaaaaa

so yes I’m excited to get to start on that once I’ve finished spinning the current load of wool I’m working on XD

I do! and it’s a whole lot of fun! and generally a lot gentler on my hands than knitting can sometimes be, which means I get to spin for much longer bursts of time than I’m allowed to do knitting. Sadly I don’t have a spinning wheel (though not because I don’t want one, we just don’t really have the space for it in our tiny apartment), but I use a drop spindle instead and it works fantastically.

On the left is my drop spindle with a tuft of fibre attached so you can kinda see how it turns into yarn (I suspect the fibre is a mix of sheep wool and a bit of silk for strength, but I got it from an odds-and-ends kind of bag so I don’t know for certain). Using a drop spindle isn’t as fast/consistent as using a spinning wheel, but they’re small, super easy to use, real cheap to find on etsy, there’s heaps of tutorials for them, and once you get the hang of it they can still make really good yarn!

On the right is a random tube that I’ve used to wind finished threads of yarn around to hold them until I’m ready for plying. I’m planning on doing 3-ply for this yarn, which means it’ll have three individual lengths of yarn twisted around each other to make thicker, stronger, and more consistent yarn. I really love looking at this photo because you can see the massive difference between the top yarn (which I spun earlier while still not super used to using the drop spindle) and how thick and hodge-podge it looks compared to the bottom yarn (which I only finished with last night), which is super fine and neat! I may still have a lot to learn, but I’ve come a really long way in a very short amount of time, and I’m really proud of that.

As far as fixing shoddy yarns by washing them goes? It very much depends on the type of yarn and the problems you’re having with it, but also stretching it out over a frame or niddy-noddy and giving it a wash (following the care instructions, of course) certainly never did any harm. My particular issue was that my yarn had a bunch of hidden knots/folds in it that wouldn’t spring loose until after I’d knitted it into the blanket, meaning I’d suddenly find a super-loose stitch with like an inch of extra yarn about two rows too late. And then that happened multiple times every row, leaving gaping holes in my blanket. I suspect giving it a wash to get rid of the last tangles will hopefully solve the issue, but if not I will go from >:c to >:C
