It was still weird, sometimes, to be taken care of so tenderly by someone. To be taken care at all, she was used to be alone and self-sufficient.

Billie forgot touches didn’t need to be violent, water didn’t need to be torture. The... “Holders” would bathe her by dropping buckets of cold water on her head. By cold she meant water full of ice, more ice than water and it caused the nastiest headaches, it left her shivering every single time. It made her feel freezing to the bones.

The bathtub was warm, with bubbles, smelled like lavender – Billie didn’t think Rogers would know that’s her favorite scent, maybe she told her once. Rogers gently scrubbed her back, professional enough to not react to her collection of scars, it was one of those days Billie couldn’t move by herself. She was, somehow, even more gentle as she washed Billie’s still spiky, short hair.

She hummed a song too, gentle and slow, like everything else about her. It was probably a lullaby, Billie was almost sure nobody ever hummed a lullaby to comfort her.

It was hope incarnated, she thought, someone sent by the superior, supernatural being Billied prayed for for the last few years.

It was salvation that Billie lost faith in deserving.
