I Need a Miracle Chapter 5
(Author's Note: So this is the next chapter that becomes the entrance to Kristoff’s road to recovery. Also, this contains some family fluff and fun. So enjoy reading!)
Anna slowly paced back and forth on the hospital floor, hoping that the doctor would at least give her good news about her husband. She knew that he was going to be okay, but she was still fearing for the worst. As she was pacing back and forth, she thanked God for husband’s health and well being. She also thanked him for Kristoff being alive and not severely hurt up in the mountains. She then prayed for her husband so that he could start the process of healing. She asked God for guidance and support, as she sat down in a chair nearby.
“Mrs. Bjorman,” a doctor had lightly tapped her on the shoulder, “can I speak to you privately?”
“Ah yes.” Anna looked up at the doctor. “How is he?”
“He’s in stable condition.” the doctor looked over his notes. “Just needs to stay over night for observation.”
“Okay.” Anna smiled weakly.
“But,” the doctor gave her a sorrowed look, “he needs to be seen by a therapist. He needs help.”
“I know.” Anna greed.
“I’ve got a couple of recommendations.” the doctor handed Anna a piece of paper. “Give them a call and they’ll be glad to help.”
Anna nodded in appreciation.
“Now you can go and see him if you like.” the doctor suggested.
“Thank you, doctor.” Anna stated, feeling the world on her shoulders.
Anna quietly made her way back into the exam room, after all of the nurses and doctor had left. Anna began to tear up once she saw her husband lying peacefully asleep with some wires and fluids hooked up around his bed. She couldn’t even believe that her own love was laying right there in front of her.
“Anna,” a faint voice had echoed from her husband, “is that you?”
“Yes.” Anna wiped away her tears, as she walked on over to his left side.
“Hey.” Kristoff smiled weakly, while he moved his hand to hers.
“Hey,” Anna gave him a loving look while rubbing his arm his arm in affection, “the doctor said that you are doing great.”
“Good.” Kristoff gazed in her eyes.
“But you would have to stay overnight.” Anna commented.
“I know.” Kristoff held her hand close at his side. “Look, I’m sorry.”
“I know.” Anna raised his palm and kissed it.
“No, I mean it.” Kristoff gave her a serious look. “I’m sorry for hurting you and our family, for the past few months. I shouldn’t have let out my anger.”
“Kristoff.”
“Anna,” Kristoff continued, “I have to tell you something.”
“Oh.” Anna mouthed, not knowing what her husband was going to say next.
“When I was undercover,” Kristoff was trying hard not to relive those painful memories, “my unit was trying to take down a prostitution ring.”
Anna just stood there in silence, listening to the story unraveling in front of her.
“At first I thought that it was going to be an easy bust,” Kristoff had let out with such pain in his voice, “but then something terrible had happened.”
Anna simply gave her husband a sorrowed look.
“I was out and away from my partner,” his tears began to form, “just checking things out.”
Anna stood there, patiently listening to her husband.
“But then,” Kristoff began to shiver in fear, “I came back and my partner had a gun to his head.”
Anna gasped. She couldn’t even believe what she was hearing.
“I...” Kristoff choked out with his tears flowing. “I didn’t want him to die, but that son-of-a-bitch killed my partner.”
“Kristoff.” Anna whispered with her own tears streaming.
“I should have stayed,” Kristoff tried to act bravely in front of her, “I could have saved him. He was my partner.”
“I know.” Anna held her husband close, allowing him to fall into pieces.
“God, I’m so sorry.” Kristoff mumbled in her chest. “I didn’t mean to take my anger out on you and the kids.”
“I forgive you.” Anna sighed.
“You do?” Kristoff gave her a hopeful look.
“Yes.”
Kristoff pulled her in for a deep forgiving kiss. They continued on enjoying each other’s company until they heard a soft knock at the door.
“Hmmm....” Anna hummed into his lips.
“Why don’t you get the door, Anna?” Kristoff breathed.
Anna gave him a pout.
Kristoff gave her a quick kiss. “Don’t worry me, Anna.”
Anna nodded in response as she walked on over to the door. “Hello?”
“Hey,” Judy waved after Anna had opened the door, “it’s so good to see you, Anna. How’s Kristoff doing?”
“He’s doing fine.” Anna hugged Judy tightly. “Just needs to stay overnight for observation.”
“I see,” Judy politely agreed while she looked on over at her partner, “hey there, Kristoff. Care for some company?”
“Sure,” her partner coughed out, as he sat up in his hospital bed, “but you guys don’t have to be here.”
“Well,” Judy gave him a concerned look, “we got a phone call from an officer on the scene.”
“Oh.” Kristoff mouthed while the rest of his colleagues came filing into his hospital room.
“We just want to make sure that you were doing okay.” Lt. Benson said with confidence.
“Thanks.” Kristoff smiled, knowing that his colleagues were there for him and his family.
“You’re welcome.” Judy smiled as she gave her partner a side hug. “Besides it wouldn’t be the same without you here.”
Kristoff just chuckled at her response.
While Kristoff was busy catching up with his fellow officers, Anna took a small step away from the crowd surrounding the bed. Anna was hoping that her husband was going to make a great recovery once they get home. She knew that Kristoff was going to need a lot of help; therefore, Anna had decided to step up to the plate and help him. “God please help us get through this.” Anna prayed as she looked at her husband.
Kristoff continued on talking with his fellow detectives until he caught a glimpse of his wife looking at him. Her small figure frame was telling him that she was scared and unsure about the situation that had unfolded. His heart ached in pain for her since finally told her the tragic memory of his past. His mind was replaying all of their arguments and those hurtful words that he said to her. He trembled at the thought of what she was going through after their arguments were done. He knows that he’ll have to make it up to her, but for now he was ordered to get some rest.
Anna continued on silently praying over her husband until she felt a hand on her shoulder.
“Hey,” a voice whispered, “are you doing alright?”
“I don’t know.” Anna looked up at the lieutenant with tears forming in her eyes. “Olivia, can I talk to you in private?”
“Sure.” Benson stated as she followed Anna on out of the room.
“Look,” Anna tried to hold in her emotions, “I just want to say thank you for everything.”
“You’re welcome.” Benson gave her a comforting hug.
“I just,” Anna began to cry into Benson’s shoulder, “don’t understand. Why does this job have to be so hard on him?”
“Because we see things that normal people wouldn’t see, on a daily basis.” Benson sighed.
“Almost the same thing for a prostitute.” Anna’s tears were flowing freely.
“I know,” Benson agreed with Anna, “except, you are now a mother and married to a detective of the NYPD.”
“Thanks.” Anna murmured while drying her own tears.
“Can I tell you something?” Benson helped Anna into a chair nearby.
“Sure.” Anna looked confused for a moment.
“When I was a sergeant,” Benson began as she sat right next to Anna, “I went through a situation that was very similar to your husband’s.”
“You went undercover?”
“No,” Benson answered, “but I was trying to catch a criminal by the name of William Lewis.”
Anna simply held her breath as she continued on listening to the story.
“He brutalized women,” Benson continued, “he raped and killed them; leaving me to build a massive case against him.”
Anna looked surprised.
“He kept on taunting me,” Benson sighed as she looked back at Anna, “telling me that I couldn’t catch him.”
“But you did, didn’t you?” Anna whispered.
“Eventually yes,” Benson agreed, “but he kidnapped and held me as his prisoner.”
“How did you escape?”
“I broke the head frame that I was handcuffed to and escaped that way.” Benson sat right next to Anna.
“Oh.”
“You know,” Benson gently nudged Anna’s shoulder, “it took me a while to overcome my anger and issues, but I got help.”
“That’s good.” Anna looked down at the hospital floor.
“Yes.” Benson commented. “I do know that your husband is getting some help, but I think that he needs you to come along with him.”
“Thank you.” Anna smiled allowing her tears to flow.
Just before both Anna and Benson were even able to finish their conversation, the squeals of small children were echoing down the hallway.
“Mommy!” a little boy giggled while he ran into Anna’s arms.
“Hey, Charlie!” Anna kissed her son’s forehead.
“Mommy! Mommy!” a little girl squealed in such excitement, causing Anna to smile warmly.
“Oh, Elizabeth!” Anna pulled her into a tight embrace.
“Mommy, where’s Daddy?” her oldest child, Laura, had asked.
“He’s in the hospital room.” Anna quickly guided the young children into the room.
“Okay.” Laura smiled.
“Hey there, Anna.” Mama Bulda lightly tapped Anna’s shoulder.
“Oh Mama.” Anna turned around and hugged her mother-in-law.
“Is Kristoff doing alright?” Papa Cliff questioned both Anna and Lt. Benson
“Ah yes, Commissioner.” Benson spoke for Anna.
“Thank you, lieutenant.” Papa Cliff smiled as he followed his grandkids into the room.
“You’re welcome.” Benson smiled as she stood outside patiently waiting for her detectives to come out.
“Thank you guys for coming by.” Kristoff smiled, feeling the support from his colleagues surrounding him.
“Well, we’re here for you, Kristoff.” Sven shook hands with Kristoff.
“Yes,” Judy grinned knowing that her partner was going to be alright, “we will always be here for you.”
“Thanks.” Kristoff grinned just before the door had opened.
“Daddy!” Laura smiled brightly as she ran to her father’s arms.
“Hey!” Kristoff chuckled while the three children all ran into his loving embrace. “I’ve missed you guys so much!”
“Daddy I love you!” Charlie blurted out, causing everyone to smile in the room.
“Aww, I love you, too.” Kristoff kissed his son’s forehead. “I love you all so much.”
“I love you, Daddy!” Laura kissed his cheek, making Kristoff melt into pieces.
“I love you, too.”
Rollins took a glance at her watch. “Hey, it’s getting late. I’ve gotta go and pick up Jessie from my sitter’s place.”
“I’ve gotta go and finish up with my paperwork.” Judy stated while Rollins made her way out of the hospital room. “See you when you get back.”
“Alright.” Kristoff waved while his colleagues were heading out the door.
“Daddy,” Laura asked quickly after everyone else had left, “are you going to be okay?”
Yes,” Kristoff ruffled with her hair, “I’m going to be okay. Now why would you ask that?”
“Well I was scared,” Laura sighed as she climbed into his hospital bed, “and so was Mommy.”
“I see.” Kristoff was calmly soothing his daughter. “I’m so sorry that you and Mommy were scared.”
“It’s okay.” Laura yawned while she snuggled deep into his side. “I forgive you.”
Kristoff simply kissed her forehead, allowing her to fall asleep on him.
“Daddy,” Charlie had rubbed his eyes, “can I sleep with you?”
“Sure,” Kristoff answered with open arms, “come here, buddy.”
“Thank you, Daddy.” Charlie slowly allowed his droopy eyes to fall.
“Daddy,” Elizabeth was trying to keep her own eyes open, “me, too?”
“Yes,” Kristoff nodded, “come here, baby.”
“Kay.” Elizabeth yawned as she laid lazily on his chest.
I’m so sorry that I’ve hurt you and Mommy. he thought while looking around at his children. He looked down at them and gently kissed all three of their children on their forehead. He couldn’t even believe that his children were there in his loving arms as if the world was safe for a moment in time. He knew that he was going to have to face his fears, but for right now all he wanted to do was to sleep with his children in his arms.
“So how is he doing, really?” Papa Cliff had asked Anna just before he entered the hospital room.
“Well,” Anna sighed while looking at both of her in-laws, “the doctor said that he was a bit dehydrated, extremely fatigued, and had his weapon with him, along with some whiskey in a canteen.”
“Did he drink any of it?” Mama Bulda calmly asked while leaning into her husband’s embrace for comfort.
“His Blood Alcohol Level was below the legal limit.” Anna sniffled a bit.
“Oh, honey.” Mama Bulda hugged Anna, allowing her to let go of her emotions.
“But he survived,” Papa Cliff reassured the both of them, “and he’s in there waiting to see us all together.”
“Alright,” Anna smiled while they made their way into the hospital room, “let’s go.”
“Oh, the kids were so excited to see him.” Mama Bulda cheered, just before they entered the room. “Laura kept on saying how...”
Just before Mama Bulda was just about to finish her words, Papa Cliff placed a hand on her shoulder.
“Shh...” Anna whispered as she pointed to the hospital bed where Kristoff was lying peacefully asleep.
“Oh my goodness.” Mama Bulda smiled, seeing that her grandchildren were fast asleep in her son’s arms. “They are so sweet and peaceful in their sleep.”
She was right, both Laura and Charlie were fast asleep in Kristoff’s arms, while Elizabeth was fully snuggled up on his chest. Anna’s heart had melted as Laura was snuggling into her father’s side. She could tell that her daughter had missed him deeply, by the way she was holding onto him. She could also see that Laura was wearing her favorite Frozen pajamas, followed by her hair being loosely pulled into two messy plaits. Her heart had swelled up with joy, as she watched her little boy slowly take his thumb out of his mouth and placed his hand on his younger sister’s hair. She smiled at the thought of Charlie not having to suck his thumb anymore, due to his father being home. She couldn’t help but notice the Lightning McQueen pajamas that he was wearing as if he was the actual driver. She had gotten all teary-eyed as she watched their youngest daughter move her little body into a more comfortable position. She couldn’t even believe that Elizabeth was simply wearing a Barbie nightgown, with nothing but a pink pull-up showing through.
“Like I said,” Mama Bulda had whispered into Anna’s ear, “they were excited to see their father.”
“I know,” Anna agreed, allowing her love to flow through her tears, “and he was sure excited to see them, too.”
“Now they are sleeping peacefully in his arms.” Papa Cliff whispered, just loud enough for both Mama Bulda and Anna to hear.
“Say,” Mama Bulda took a glance down at her watch, “it’s getting late. Do you want us to take the kids home with us?”
“Ah,” Anna looked over at the sleeping family, “no, I think that they’ll be fine here. Besides, he missed them like crazy.”
“Alrighty,” Papa Cliff smiled and hugged Anna just before he left the room, “hope to see you, tomorrow.”
“Same here.” Anna yawned as she hugged Mama Bulda and Papa Cliff tightly.
“Anna,” Mama Bulda smiled, knowing that her son was safe in Anna’s arms, “get some sleep, now. The children will be keeping you up all day tomorrow.”
“Thank you.” Anna yawned again as both Papa Cliff and Mama Bulda had exited the hospital room.
After the grandparents had left, Anna slowly walked on over to Kristoff’s bedside. There she gave him a kiss goodnight and a prayer of thanks to her Heavenly Father above. “Oh they’ve missed you so much, Kristoff.” she whispered faintly just before she sat down in a chair nearby. “Just as much as I’ve missed you.”
She continued on thinking about their children, as she allowed sleep to consume her within the next few minutes. “I love you, Kristoff.” Anna faintly whispered, just before she fell into a deep slumber.
