Another Story Time!!!
Damian's POV
Demi and Matt were over for dinner. We were waiting for the roast to be done as y/n quietly works on the vegetables. Demi and Matt sat at the kitchen island with glasses of wine as I lean against it with my wine glass.
"So another story time?" asked Demi. I watched as a smile curved y/n's lips as she glanced over at me.
"How about we tell em about Angie and Ginger's wedding and the week leading up to it well the five-ish days. That was certainly uh an," she suggested.
"Interesting week?" I offered with a chuckle.
"Yeah! Tell us that!!" said Demi making Matt, y/n and myself chuckle.
"Okay. Okay," I smile "Do you wanna hear that one?"
"Have you met her?" chuckled Matt.
Demi smacks Matt on the arm "They promised!" she pouts.
Y/N laughed lightly as she placed the vegetables into the oven to roast for the last hour of the meat cooking. As she grabs her wine glass and came over to me.
"Come on let's go sit in the living room," said y/n "Be more comfortable."
Demi immediately got up and hurried to the living room. Matt following her. Y/N and I exchange glances before her lips tugged into a smile.
"She's just like a child," I shook my head.
Y/N laughs lightly as she put her hand on my chest as I looked down at her. A smile on my lips as I lean down kissing her lips.
"She's our child," murmured y/n against my lips as I wrapped an arm around her waist.
"COME ON MOM AND DAD!" yells Demi.
Y/N and I broke the kiss laughing "We are coming," I said as I tap y/n's ass lightly.
We walked into the living room and sat side by side. Y/N leaned lightly against me. She crossed her legs as she rested the wine glass on her knee as I wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
"So this wedding," said Demi.
"Well Angie and Ginger chose to get married fourth of July weekend two thousand and five. July fourth to be exact. Layla was turning four on the first of July. So the entire weekend was a lot of family events which Luis was included. I mean even before we got together and engaged he was considered family," explained y/n.
"Yeah but we had to be in the Bronx starting June thirtieth. For the welcome party. That's when y/n was still living in the burbs of Buffalo going to school for business management and event planning," I explained "I was in Jersey just starting my career but I drove to Buffalo to pick y/n up," Demi opened her mouth "You want us to start there huh?"
"Yes," she said.
I glanced at y/n and she smiles "Okay our tale begins June twenty sixth. My dad's birthday," she explained "I had invited Luis to join us for a family dinner at my dad's favorite restaurant, a hometown favorite Magnolias Diner. Luis had actually made it in the night before and we had gone out to dinner and got a bit blitzed," she laughed lightly and even now her laughter was music to my ears.
"Yup that morning was certainly memorable," I smile.
Sunday, June 26, 2005
I woke up hung over on y/n's couch. She was laying beside me her head on my chest nestled in my arm. I groaned lightly as I placed a hand up to shield my eyes from the sun's glare as it seeps into the window. Y/N groans as she moves bringing her hand to her face wiping away the sleep from her eyes. Her Yorkie, Simba was on the back of the sofa judging us.
Y/N tilted her head up "Pookie?! What are you doing in my bed?" she murmured.
I chuckled "Squish if you haven't noticed this isn't your bedroom," I gesture.
"Fuck," she muttered as she sat up "We got wasted last night," she held her head as she looked at her watch "Shit. It's eleven. We have to be at my aunt's place at noon for my dad's birthday party before we have dinner at Magnolias Diner," she groans as she stretches and then my eyes open wide. She was wearing my t-shirt and nothing else. I only wore boxers. The rest of our clothes were scattered about.
"Y/N umm you're uh not wearing anything but my shirt. Like," I covered my eyes "nothing. No panties!"
Demi gasped but Matt slapped a hand over
her mouth before taking away her
glass of wine.
"All questions should and will wait," he said.
She side eyes him before biting his hand.
"What the actual fuck?!" she gasped.
I chuckled "Anyways," I smirk.
"Oh!" gasped y/n as she pulled the t-shirt down as best she could "Umm," she searches the floor and found the remnants of her thongs. She picked up the tattered material and showed me "Luis what-what-what happened?" I sat up and put my hands on my head before scratching it trying to desperately remember what happened after we got back to y/n's apartment.
She picked up her bra which was intact as she walked she picked up my jeans that had one leg inside out, she found my suit jacket and her red curve hugging dress in the hallway leading from the door. One of her stilettos was on the coffee table. I picked it up and was tapping it against my head. The other hung from a lamp. My sneakers were at the entrance of the living room.
Flashes of last night started coming back. We had had several shots of tequila and ended the night with one maybe two mixed drinks of either coke and jack or rum and coke. I couldn't remember. All I know is on the cab ride back to y/n's place I told her she had pretty lips I think. She told me the same and I said the better to kiss you with. She challenged me to do just that as she fumbled for the keys to the apartment. She finally opened the door and a memory flashes in my minds eye. I KISSED HER! LIKE FULL ON THE MOUTH KISSED HER!
"Y/N," I said quietly.
She peaks her head around the corner as she's still in the hallway "Yeah?" she asked apprehensively.
"Parts of last night are coming back to me," I said standing and that's when both of us saw the same thing at the same time on the coffee table. Her stiletto had been covering it up.
"Is that?" she gestures as I leaned forward and picked up the open package.
I nodded "It is," I said my face feeling flush and cold at the same time. She quickly walks to the waste basket by her sofa. She swallowed hard as she glanced into the basket. I watched as all color drained from her face as last night's events hit me like a mack truck.
Narrator's POV
The previous night....
"You have pretty eyeballs y/n," slurs Luis as they sat in the back of the cab as they knew enough they were to drunk to drive home after the club.
"You have a pretty nose," slurs y/n as she giggles lightly as she boops his nose as if he were a canine.
The cab stops in front of an apartment building "This is your stop. That'll be thirty five dollars," said the cabbie.
Luis pulled out two twenties from his wallet and placed them in the cabbie's hand "Keep the change partner!" he slurred in his best "cowboy" voice making y/n giggle lightly as Luis stumbled out of the car before fumbling to the other side of the cab opening the door for y/n. He held out his hand and y/n put her hand in his and got out. Her curve hugging short dress was up to her mid thigh. She quickly pulled it down as she and Luis stumbled to the apartment building door. Luis opened the first door and cheers at his accomplishment as he leans against the door frame "Después de ti, m'lady," (After you, m'lady) he gestures to the foyer before y/n enters and Luis stumbled in behind her. How they made it up the stairs to y/n's apartment without any noise was a miracle in of itself. Luis leaned against the wall as y/n tries finding her keys to open the door "You have a pretty mouth," Luis stated as he leans closer to y/n.
She looked at him "You do too!" she smiles as she miraculously unlocked the door and opened the wooden door.
"The better to kiss you with!" he said as they were nose to nose as Luis leaned down to her height.
"I challenge you to kiss me then!" said y/n. With the liquid courage he didn't have to be told twice. He quickly pressed his lips to hers as they stumbled backwards into her apartment. Luis kicking the door closed with his foot.
Y/N wrapped her arms around his neck as he unzipped her dress the material falling where they stood. The next thing off was the sports coat Luis was wearing. His hands quickly returning to y/n's bare ass as her lower half is covered by thin lace thongs. Her bra was quickly discarded after Luis made short work of the hooks. His jeans were the next to leave their persons. He kicked them off along with his sneakers leaving one pant leg inside out. She took off his t-shirt throwing it to the floor by the sofa. He rips the thin material of her panties off her body She grabbed his necklace pulling him to the sofa. He discarded his boxers where his t-shirt was. Y/N's eyes roam his body and his eyes did the same to hers. His dick was hard and leaking pre cum it was so big it was hitting his stomach. Her pussy was wet and ready for him.
"God I wanna fuck you into this sofa," he said.
"Do it!" she challenged as she reaches into a drawer on the coffee table and throws a package of condoms at him "Fuck me Luis. Fuck me like you hate me!"
"I couldn't ever hate you," he said as he grabbed a condom from the box. Opening the package and getting the condom out. Rolling it onto his harden length before joining y/n on the sofa. He pushed into her and he groans as he never felt a sensation quite like y/n's pussy grabbing his dick. He began thrusting into her making her a moaning mess beneath him. His hands squeezing her breasts as her head tilted back and her eyes rolled into her head.
Damian's POV
That next morning...
"We fucked," we said as y/n sat on the sofa. Our clothes still in her hands.
Y/N laughed lightly "Just wish I could remember the whole thing. I only have hazy memories of you entering me," she looks up at me before I sat beside her.
"My last memory was my first thrust and how your pussy grabbed hold of my dick," I admit.
She blushed lightly as she looked at the clothes in her lap "Just wish I could remember it," she shook her head "To bad it was when we were drunk," she glanced at her watch "I'm gonna grab a shower and get dressed then you can have the shower," I nodded as she hands me my clothes "These are yours," she murmured quickly "Umm the t-shirt. I uh," she blushes deeply.
"Keep it. It's yours," I smile at her as she got up.
"Thanks Pookie," she answered softly as she stood "I'm going to get that shower."
I watched as she hurried from the living room as I looked at Simba who barks at me before he hurried off to where y/n went.
"I KNEW IT. I FUCKING KNEW
YOU GUYS HAD TO
FUCK AT SOME POINT BEFORE YOU GOT
TOGETHER!!!"
Demi gleefully says as she kicks
her feet.
Y/N laughs lightly before taking a sip of wine
"Yeah it's too bad we couldn't remember it.
We literally remembered the beginning
and that is it," she looks to me "That
day is still a haze."
I nod in agreement "Me too. I only
remember the first thrust
after I entered you," I explained but
Demi gags like she had a hair ball.
"Por favor get back to the story!"
I rolled my eyes as I smirk at y/n
"Do you wanna take over?" I inquire.
"If you want me to," she smiles.
I chuckled "Go ahead,"
I nudge her lightly.
Y/N's POV
After my shower I poke my head around the corner of the living room's wall.
"Shower is free," I said to Luis.
He looked up from his book and gave me a smile that makes me weak in the knees.
"Thanks y/n," he said as he stood. My eyes quickly moved up and down his body and well that's a huge mistake as I felt the wetness between my thighs.
"Uh um. Towels in the closet next to the bathroom," I quickly say "Umm yeah. I will be in my bedroom if-if-if you need anything don't hesitate to give me a shout."
He nods with a grin "Gracias y/n," he smiles as he walked towards me. I covered my mouth as a small moan escaped my lips as I watched his muscles work as he walked.
"Excuse me," my cheeks flushed as my stomach did flip flops . I quickly felt a gush come from my pussy. I was definitely wet and was going to have to take another shower if I didn't fix it.
Narrator's POV
Luis watched y/n's towel clad body hurry down the hallway to her bedroom. He groans as he had wished the towel would have dropped so he could've actually seen her naked body without the beer goggles. He felt his dick twitch and began to harden as she slipped into her bedroom. He moans as he did remember the small tattoo she had where her hip bone and pelvic bone met and that was it his dick harden completely.
"Fuck," he grunted as he walked towards the closet grabbing a towel before heading into the bathroom. He took off his boxers and got into the shower. He quickly turned on the water, grabbing body wash to act as a lubricant and then turned on the shower. The water hitting him. He took his dick into his hand and began to jack off imagining y/n's naked form in front of him. Her hands running down his body. Her bitting her lip before licking them. He put a hand against the wall leaning his head against it as his hand picked up speed. He grunts as he thought of how his hand was y/n's pussy putting his dick into a choke hold "GOD DAMN Y/N," he screamed throwing his head back as he jacked off more.
Meanwhile in her bedroom y/n got her dildo and laid on her bed thinking of Luis as she inserted the dildo into her soaking wet and aching pussy. She turned it on moaning loudly as she did so.
"OH FUCK LUIS!! DO THAT TO ME AGAIN!!" she screamed as the dildo thrusted into her over and over again. She tilted her hips driving the dildo deeper into her. She moans loudly as the dildo found her g-spot. She grasped the bed sheets as she thought of Luis's body on top of hers. His dick stretching her and ruining her for every other man who would enter her pussy.
As both pleasure themselves in different rooms of the apartment they both thought of the each other as they chased that high. And almost as if they were making love to each other they both spasmed and came at the same time. Both panting and sweaty.
They quickly cleaned up and were dressed. Meeting each other in the living room.
Damian's POV
I looked up to see y/n dressed casually in a jean mini skirt, a tank top that hugged her body and knee high black boots. I felt my dick twitch as I stare at her breasts. I closed my eyes thinking of anything but y/n's chest.
"Ready?" she smiles at me. I nodded as I looked up and she had pulled on a shirt that was cut in such a way making it hang off her one shoulder. I nod as I stood. I was wearing a t-shirt, jeans and sneakers "How's your head?"
"Better. Thanks for having asprin and water ready for me," I said.
She smiles and waves her hand "De nada Pookie," she laughs "I knew you would need it as much as I did."
I smiled as she turned bending to grab her purse. My eyes roaming her body before falling on her ass. The jean skirt riding up her ass and showing her bare ass. I bit my lip and swallow hard.
Mrs. Ballard doing jumping jacks in a leotard I thought to myself as I thought of an old teacher from high school. She was about sixty when I was in school.
🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷
Demi snorted with laughter "You fought hard to not get a hard on huh?" she asked.
I laughed "Yea. But at twenty three my dick sprung to life easily," I said.
A smrik paints y/n's lips as she leans to my ear "Not much has changed in nearly twentyyears amor," she whispers "Hopefully I can make it spring to life later. My pussy definitely needs a beating."
I coughed as my eyes moved to her and she smiles at me. She raised an eyebrow before she bit her lip knowing full well that action made my dick spring to life.
I pressed a kiss to the side of her head as I dropped my voice to just above a whisper "That pussy of yours is being beaten several times tonight. Be ready," I growl.
"Papi. Mi coño está listo y yo también," (Daddy. My pussy is ready and so am I) she whispers as she placed a hand on my knee as Demi raised an eyebrow at us.
"The story por favor!" she said as the timer went off to signal dinner was done "NOOOOO!!!! I need you to finish the story!!!"
"After dinner," said y/n standing and heading to the kitchen. Demi getting up and following her quickly.
"But-but-but!" said Demi "Por favor! ¡Por favor, termine la historia!" (Please! Please finish the story!)
"After dinner," I said "We are just on the first day. Haven't got to the wedding."
Demi groan cried "Why?!!!" she pouts.
"I would like to not have a conversation about Luis and y/n having sex while we eat," said Matt.
"Fine," sighed Demi "But we are finishing the story tonight no matter how long it will take!"
"We promise," I said "But first dinner."

Hot take. As much as I'm excited to see the new Mean Girls (2024) adaptation of the 2018 Broadway musical (I'm a big fan of both the 2004 movie and the musical), I really hope this doesn't start a new trend of ''musical movie adaptations of Broadway musicals based on movies''.
The 2017-2018 Broadway season saw a lot of new musicals based on classic movies.
Amelie, Anastasia, A Bronx Tale, Groundhog Day, and The Band's Visit (which won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2018), just to name a few.
Not to mention the more recent ones like Beetlejuice and Back to the Future. The list goes on.
Now if you take movies like Amelie and Groundhog Day for example which became instant cinema classics, the stage versions only enhanced the source material which is what a good musical does.
However, by re-adapting a musical that's based on a movie back into the original medium it started with, it always runs the risk of being an exact repeat of the original movie with added musical numbers, and therefore, feels entirely unnecessary to exist.
I guess that's the main criticism of the new Mean Girls, especially with its weird marketing to hide the fact that it was a musical to not dissuade the old Mean Girls fans or the average movie goer who doesn't like musicals (and this was the main negative response I was seeing from people who went in to the movie theater blind and left halfway through because they were surprised it was a musical and didn't expect the actors to burst into song and this turned them off). But then the absence of musical numbers--narrowing it down to 12 shorter more cinematic pop versions of the original songs and cutting out 14 of the most beloved songs from the stage version--ended up alienating the musical theatre crowd who were expecting a more faithful adaptation of the Broadway musical. Like it's a musical that doesn't even want to be musical.
So who was this movie for exactly? If not for the musical theatre crowd who didn't like the changes to the songs, and if not for the non-musical fans who didn't like the songs regardless, who was this movie for??? It seems the producers wanted to market it more towards non-musical fans, but they really shouldn't have concerned themselves with trying to attract old Mean Girls fans who already know the 2004 movie by heart and wouldn't have accepted a remake, songs or no songs either way. If it was a MUSICAL adaptation, the target audience should have been the dedicated musical fanbase, which is more than the producers give it credit for. Mean Girls the musical has been licensed to high schools and performed by performing arts schools and has gained a lot of popularity that way. There was no shortage of people who would have gone to see this movie, myself included.
My point is, if one is going to go through all the trouble of adapting a musical based on a movie back into a movie, the least it can do is preserve the musical theatre genre.
On the other hand, the new Mean Girls is actually gaining mostly positive reviews despite its flaws, and some are even calling it the best Musical Movie since Chicago.
I've been following its production and I've been listening to the soundtrack non-stop (the changes don't bother me that much, in fact, my only complaint is that the songs are too short like they really should have had the full versions of ''Meet the Plastics'' and ''What's Wrong with Me?'' including its reprise and I just wish they maintained more of the original songs, like I understand cutting out the filler ones like ''Who's House is This?'' because no one would seriously miss that one but songs like ''Where Do You Belong'', ''Stop'', ''Fearless'', and ''More'' would have benefited the score in my opinion because there's so much character development that's missing otherwise). I'm still excited to see it, but I do hope its success doesn't cause a new cinematic trend. I really don't think I want to see Groundhog Day as a musical movie for example, because the Broadway version is so perfect and I would hate for them to ruin both the original movie and the musical.
Mean Girls made some interesting choices to re-adapt its story with mixed results, and I don't think it's a bad thing. But things like this are usually one-hit wonders and I don't want to see Hollywood jump the bandwagon on this one and just leave well enough alone.

The Get Down (2016)
Tumblr media
The Get Down is a television series created by Baz Luhrmann and Stephen Adly Guirgis. It premiered on Netflix in 2016 and consists of one season split into two parts. Set in the South Bronx in the late 1970s, the series explores the rise of hip-hop, disco, and punk music against the backdrop of a rapidly changing New York City.
The story follows a group of teenagers navigating the challenges of urban life while pursuing their dreams of music stardom. The main characters include Ezekiel "Zeke" Figuero, a talented poet and aspiring rapper; Mylene Cruz, a determined young singer with ambitions of becoming a disco star; Shaolin Fantastic, a streetwise graffiti artist and DJ; and other members of their diverse community.
The Get Down combines elements of drama, music, and historical fiction to depict the cultural and social dynamics of the era. The series is known for its vibrant visuals, dynamic musical performances, and engaging storytelling. It explores themes such as identity, ambition, love, and the power of art in the face of adversity.
Tumblr media
How does the series use dual-focus narrative as a strategic storytelling tool beyond heteronormative romantic pairings?
The Get Down employs a dual-focus narrative to delve into multiple layers of its characters' lives and the broader socio-cultural context of 1970s New York City. Beyond heteronormative romantic pairings, the series strategically utilizes this narrative tool to explore themes of identity, ambition, and social change. By intertwining the personal journeys of characters like Ezekiel and Mylene with the larger backdrop of the emerging hip-hop and disco scenes, the show creates a rich tapestry of interconnected stories that reflect the diversity of experiences within the community.
Tumblr media
What are the “inevitable” couplings within the series and how are they accentuated through “cinematic” similarities and contrasts?
In terms of "inevitable" couplings, the series accentuates various relationships through cinematic similarities and contrasts. For example, the bond between Ezekiel and Shaolin Fantastic is portrayed with dynamic energy and shared passion for music and creativity. Their partnership is contrasted with the more traditional romantic coupling of Mylene and Zeke, highlighting the different forms of love and connection present within the narrative. Through visual motifs, such as parallel editing and juxtaposition of scenes, the series emphasizes the complexity of these relationships and their impact on the characters' lives.
Tumblr media
How does the series use musical numbers within and beyond the narrative world to replicate fairy tale, backstage, or folk musicals?
Musical numbers in The Get Down serve as more than just performances within the narrative world; they replicate elements of fairy tales, backstage dramas, and folk musicals to enhance the storytelling experience. The use of music as a narrative device allows the show to explore themes of dreams, aspirations, and resilience in the face of adversity. Whether it's through elaborate dance sequences or heartfelt musical performances, these moments transport viewers into the characters' inner worlds, providing insight into their hopes, fears, and desires. By blending elements of fantasy and reality, The Get Down creates a unique and immersive musical experience that transcends traditional storytelling conventions.
Tumblr media
Overall, The Get Down was an amazing show that was gone too soon.<3

🎤🌟 Once Upon a Beat: The Birth and Tale of Hip Hop! 🎶📜
Gather 'round, music lovers and history enthusiasts! Let me take you back to the gritty streets of the Bronx, where a musical revolution was about to be born. 🏙🎧
In a world colored by disco balls and rock anthems, a new rhythm began to stir. It was the late 1970s, and amidst the concrete and chaos, something magical was brewing. Picture a neighborhood pulsating with energy, where creativity and resilience ran through the veins of its people.
Enter the pioneers: DJs spinning vinyl records, searching for the grooviest beats; MCs, or "masters of ceremonies," stepping up to the mic with tales from the corners of their lives; B-boys and B-girls, turning empty lots into dance battlegrounds, showcasing moves that defied gravity. This was the birth of Hip Hop.
The turntables spun stories, the lyrics wove narratives, and the dance moves spoke a language of their own. It wasn't just music; it was a voice for the unheard, a spotlight for the marginalized, and a celebration of the struggles and triumphs that shaped a generation.
From those humble beginnings, Hip Hop exploded like fireworks on the 4th of July. It spread from block parties to boomboxes, from borough to borough, touching hearts and inspiring minds. The movement was unstoppable, giving birth to legends like Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, and Run-D.M.C., whose words and beats resonated far beyond the concrete jungle.
But Hip Hop didn't stop there. It evolved, adapted, and embraced new influences. It wasn't confined by geography or language; it was a universal language in itself. From the golden age of the '80s to the fusion of the '90s and the innovation of the 2000s, Hip Hop kept rewriting its own story.
Today, it's more than a genre; it's a cultural force that shapes fashion, art, and social change. It's a reminder that from adversity comes creativity, from struggle comes strength, and from beats comes unity.
So next time you nod your head to a catchy rap verse or find yourself moving to a groovy beat, remember the journey that brought us here. Hip Hop is a story of empowerment, expression, and evolution, and it's a story we're all part of. 🎵📖

Im going to miss my uncle so much. He was one of the few genuinely good people in my family. He was one of the only adults who was good to my dad as a kid. He gave me my love of musicals. When I was really little I said I was going to marry him because he bought me the single of "My Heart Will Go On" from the titanic soundtrack and it was my favorite song and he even took me to see it one afternoon when i was 2 he never talked down to me or treated me like I couldnt handle things, we used to talk for hours at family functions about indie movies and book analysis and he always told me I made him proud by being "such a thinker". I invited him to every birthday dinner since I was old enough to decide who to invite. Im crushed that he won't be at my wedding. I hope he knew how much he meant to me, even down to the last thing we did together when he took me and my fiancé to A Bronx Tale The Musical and we loved it. He only spent 2 days in hospice. He understood what I go through as a "closeted trans man" because he was a gay man who lived his entire life in the closet and he never made me feel ashamed of it or pressured to come out, he didnt even tell the rest of the family because I asked him not to. All through my childhood he would buy me beautiful porcelain dolls for Christmas so I have this lovely collection of dolls. He took me to see my first play (Bye Bye Birdie when I was 3). He loved my godson so much, always asking about him, always so proud to hear of his accomplishments. He was just such a special person and loved him so much he brought so much joy into my life and im so sad that hes gone but also he didnt suffer, he didn't rot in hospice, he was passed away within 48 hours of telling the family he was sick, we literally went to a play with him 13 days ago and he was full of life and chatting with the local theater people he was so COOL i look up to him so much im going to miss him forever

Hurray For The Riff Raff Album Review: The Past is Still Alive
Tumblr media
(Nonesuch)
BY JORDAN MAINZER
On The Past is Still Alive, the latest and best studio album from Hurray For The Riff Raff, Alynda Segarra looks back at a specific era of their life to pay tribute to chaos and imagine what could come from it. Their seemingly legendary but very real past is well-known by now: At age 17, Segarra left their home in the Bronx and hopped freight trains, played in a hobo band, and settled in New Orleans, a formative period of simultaneous struggle and freedom. That combined ethos has pervaded all Hurray For The Riff Raff records, but on The Past is Still Alive, Segarra's finally telling the tale, applying what they learned to the present day.
Notably, Segarra started recording The Past is Still Alive a month after their father died; while his voice appears literally on the album's final track "Kiko Forever", his musical uplift acts as a buoy for Segarra throughout the whole thing. Though they had worked with producer Brad Cook and drummer Yan Westerlund prior, Segarra had never recorded with the rest of the album's laundry list of stellar contributors, from Meg Duffy of Hand Habits, and Mike Mogis to guest vocalists Anjimile, Conor Oberst, and S.G. Goodman. That Segarra conquered a period of vulnerability to record the album with bonafide strangers is a terrific feat, but not necessarily surprising: This is a person who has the ability to treat even their fellow band members like the audience, recipients of some remarkable stories full of biography and symbolism alike.
Throughout The Past is Still Alive, Segarra alternates between timeless metaphor and hyper-specific details. On "Buffalo", they remark, simply, that "Some things take time," whether presently forming love or society's death-by-1000-cuts treatment of the oppressed. Segarra sings over strummed acoustic guitar and Mogis' pedal steel, the perfect accompaniment to earned wisdom. "Hawkmoon", on the other hand, is more electric, full of Duffy's bluesy riffing, akin to the epic sound of The Navigator, fitting for a song inspired by a lasting figure: the first trans woman Segarra ever met. As if to project to a stadium full of folks looking to honor Ms. Jonathan, Segarra sings a heartland rock-style salute: "She opened up my mind in the holes of her fishnet tights / Dildo waving on her car antenna and / I could've ridden shotgun forever." Pseudo title track "Snakeplant (The Past Is Still Alive)" juxtaposes both memories of chaos and lessons learned. As Segarra recounts shoplifting and having sex on top of an island of trash, they make sure to tell you what they took from a life among "the barrel of freaks": "Test your drugs / Remember Narcan / There's a war on people, don't you understand?" Duffy's distorted guitar and Matt Douglas's skronking saxophone create beauty from Segarra's warnings of disorder.
Some of the best songs on The Past is Still Alive are incredibly life-affirming. Opener "Alibi" is a plea to drug-addicted childhood friends, a promise that, "Maybe we'll start a band," on a song that introduces the swath of instrumentation present throughout the record, like gentle piano, steady drums, echoing guitar, and pedal steel. "Ogallala" and "Colossus of Roads" prioritize survival in a harsh world--Segarra compares themselves to the musicians still playing on the deck of a sinking Titanic--but not without a wish that the world itself would burn. Westerlund's crashing drums take the former to its logical conclusion, while the latter, inspired by the 2022 Club Q shooting in Colorado springs, makes the case for empathy along the way to the apocalypse. "Wrap you up in the bomb shelter of my feather bed," Segarra sings, fighting cruelty with compassion atop Phil Cook's mournful dobro and organ and Westerlund's funereal drum rolls.
It's a line in "Hourglass" that sticks with me the most among the lyrical and instrumental brilliance of The Past is Still Alive. Recounting feeling out-of-place among the status-obsessed, Segarra shifts their perspective. "Suddenly, a boulder's just sand in an hourglass," they sing. Though they spend much of the album concentrating on time and place, they recognize that our mark on earth is statistically insignificant, something we can use to our advantage rather than something that makes us feel small. What many in society consider important--celebrity, power, money--is volatile compared to the power of your own agency, of giving life to the past.

Contrary to what some hand-wringing "purists" might tell you, sex is a part of Hip-Hop.
Shocking, right?
Of course, that shouldn't be breaking news: sex is a part of human experience. It's been a part of culture and art ever since civilization has created culture and art, so why would rap music and Hip-Hop culture be any different? From the minute Big Bank Hank of The Sugarhill Gang rapped about being able to "bust you out with my super sperm"—words that were actually written by Grandmaster Caz aka Casanova Fly (keyword: "Casanova")—sex has been a topic of many rap lyrics and videos. From Too $hort and 2 Live Crew, to LL COOL J and Lil Kim: there is a brilliant, provocative history of sex rap. The examples are endless—Kool G Rap's "Talk Like Sex"; The Notorious B.I.G.'s "F**kin' You Tonight"; there are even popular songs from artists like MC Lyte and Q-Tip that are highly erotic (Google the lyrics to Lyte's "Keep On Keepin' On" right now).
For the purposes of this examination, it should be recognized that sexy rap songs can both offer the sensual and also wallow in the raunchy. The most seductive can feel as tantalizingly alluring as a quiet-storm classic; the raunchiest can make the most bashful bride buss it open. But it's all good. Balance, people...
Here are the 25 Dopest Rap Songs to F*%! To; a playlist for when you wanna get right by gettin' a little wrong...
#26
"STRAWBERRIES" - SMOOTH [BONUS SONG]
Our BONUS SONG pick is a celebrated classic guest spot! Well, ACTUALLY this is more of an R&B song than a rap song—but Smooth is a rapper and she raps on this seductive classic. So there.
#25
"COCKTALES" - TOO $HORT
The Oakland legend is one of the foremost authorities on raunchy rap. Hell, he damn-near invented the genre. And this quasi-sequel to his classic "Freaky Tales" is one of his naughty best.
#24
"TALK SEX" - KOOL KEITH
When it comes to freaky raps, Kool Keith is like $hort Dog's weirdass cousin. Like his Bay Area contemporary, the oddball emcee out of the Bronx is one of the longest-running legends of raunch, and this track from 2018 is an example of his hilariously scatological approach to sex songs.
#23
"HOW DO U WANT IT" - 2PAC FEAT. K-CI & JO-JO
Pac always found a way to balance his socio-political rage, thuggishness and straight seduction. This monster hit from his double album ALL EYEZ ON ME is one of the most famous examples of the latter. And the X-rated, porn star-themed video is the stuff of legend.

#22
"RICH SEX" - FUTURE
The Atlanta trap star managed to popularize a new lane within the rap game via his digitized crooning. And it was the perfect launching pad for a sexy sound that came to be embodied by this hit single.
#21
"BED" - NICKI MINAJ FEAT. ARIANA GRANDE
She's got a more varied body of work than some of her detractors want to recognize, but when Nicki goes sexy, she GOES SEXY. And while this ain't the raunchiest at all, this hit single with pop megastar Ariana Grande is one of her most sinfully seductive tracks.
#20
"BIG MOMMA THANG" - LIL KIM FEAT. JAY-Z, LIL CEASE
The opening track is everything that announced Kim as a superstar: bold, brazen and bangin.' Jay delivers one of his first high-profile guest spots as Kim makes it clear she's ready for her close-up.
#19
"ONE MINUTE MAN - MISSY ELLIOTT FEAT. LUDACRIS AND TRINA
Missy found yet another musical kindred spirit in Ludacris during the early aughts, and they capitalized on their connection regularly, including on the 2001 club hit “One Minute Man” from her third album, "Miss E… So Addictive." Trina's guest verse steals the show, as "da baddest bitch" gets raw and raunchy about what she needs in the bedroom.
#18
"GETTIN SOME ..." - SHAWNNA FEAT. TOO $HORT
The St. Louis rap star was a standout for Ludacris and the Disturbing Tha Peace label, and this monster single was a big reason why. It's one of the early 00s most inescapable tunes, and one of $hort's best guest spots.
#17
"85" - YOUNGBLOODZ FEAT. BIG BOI, JIM CROW
The hook. That groovy production from Atlanta veterans Parental Advisory. This ATL classic is a late-night creep anthem. Anybody who's ever hopped in the whip to ride down 85 for a rendezvous can relate; and the cameo from Fat Sax is one of his best ever.
#16
"IMAGINE THAT" - LL COOL J
This steamy Rockwilder-produced single could be considered an unofficial sequel to the classic "Doin' It." The track reunites LL with LeShaun, and their chemistry from that earlier duet is just as strong here.
#15
"SHAWTY FREAK A LIL SUMTHIN" - LIL JON & THE EASTSIDE BOYZ FEAT. JAZZE PHA
An early gem in Toomp’s discography, “Shawty Freak a Lil Sumthin’” is both an Atlanta and southern classic. Toomp co-produced the track with Jon, which was featured on Lil Jon and the Eastside Boyz’s 1997 offering, GET CRUNK, WHO U WIT: DA ALBUM.
#14
"SEX FACES" - SCARFACE, TOO $HORT, TELA, AND DEVIN THE DUDE
Another one of his most popular tracks, Scarface takes the ordinary boy-meets-girl tale and spins it into an engaging tale on this very explicit classic. With a noteworthy assist from Devin The Dude, Tela and the $hort Dog himself.
#13
"LATE NITE TIP" - THREE SIX MAFIA
One of the best moments from Gangsta Boo and from Lord Infamous. Over a flip of Lisa Fischer's quiet storm classic "How Can I Ease the Pain," Three Six delivers a song that's somehow both seductive and sinister.
#12
"LOVE IN YA MOUTH" - KILO ALI FEAT. BIG BOI
The forefather of Atlanta rap was never shy about freaky songs, and this ode to oral sex is one of the most classic tracks in his repertoire. Big Boi’s guest spot serves as the perfect accent to the nasty perfection here.
#11
"MIND SEX" - DEAD PREZ
M-1 and stic.man aren’t always just raging against the machine. What set the politically minded duo apart from an act like Public Enemy is that they weren’t averse to showing a more sensual side, as epitomized in this ode to gettin’ it in with someone with whom you actually share a mental and emotional connection.
#10
"BIG OLE FREAK" - MEGAN THEE STALLION
The Texas rap superstar was still on the rise when she dropped this raunchy rap insta-classic. Meg made it clear early on that she could be playful, freaky as all hell and a take-no-shit emcee—all at the same time.
#9
"SLOB ON MY KNOB" - THREE SIX MAFIA
Juicy J wrote this little ditty back when he was still a teen in high school, and it has all the adolescent horn dogism that one might expect from a young dude. It's endured as a foulmouthed classic as only Three Six can deliver.
#8
"LOLLIPOP" - LIL WAYNE FEAT. STATIC MAJOR
It became so ubiquitous that it's hard to remember just how unique it was when it dropped. The ode to oral love became one of the era's biggest smashes and cemented Wayne's omnipresence. The song that seemed to own 2008.
#7
"PUT IT IN YOUR MOUTH" - AKINYELE
Ah yes, a catchy little ditty from the freakiest rhymer Queens ever produced. Akinyele was never known for subtlety, and this semi-hit from 1996 was his crowning achievement as a single. The song is about — well, y’know — and the hook became a fixture in strip clubs and on dance floors throughout the late 1990s.
#6
"ME SO HORNY" - 2 LIVE CREW
If there is a "The Message" for sex rap, it's gotta be the X-rated classic from 2 Live Crew that got them banned in the U.S.A. Luke and his boys really go there and it shocked the world. It also opened the door for virtually everybody from Akinyele to Lil Kim.
#5
"MY NECK, MY BACK" - KHIA
We've used the word "inescapable" a lot on this list, but DAMN—where were YOU when you first heard this foul-mouthed little classic from an upstart out of Florida. After years of rap songs with men telling women how to go down, Khia repped for the ladies with this instructional guide. Get it right, sir. Get it RIGHT.
#4
"W.A.P." - CARDI B. AND MEGAN THEE STALLION
Two of the biggest stars in contemporary music joined forces for a song that paid homage to both Frank Ski and DJ Uncle Al, the video became the talk of pop culture, and the ladies' provocative performance at the 63rd Grammys led to a record number of complaints. Mission accomplished.
#3
"DOIN' IT" - LL COOL J FEAT. LESHAUN
It's a raunch rap classic; a sexual tour-de-force from a guy who made this sorta thing his raizon d'etre. The seductive imagery in the lyrics gets more and more explicit, as Uncle L goes bar-for-bar-for-bar with LeShaun over an exquisite sample of Grace Jones' "My Jamaican Guy."
#2
"WHAT'S IT GONNA BE? - BUSTA RHYMES FEAT. JANET JACKSON
One of Busta’s biggest singles came when he linked with Janet Jackson for “What’s It Gonna Be!?” The chaotic drums on the track are smoothed out with Janet’s signature vocals on the hook. The sexy, futuristic video, directed by Busta and Hype Williams in his prime, is one of the most expensive ever made, and one of the most memorable of the decade.
#1
"HOW MANY LICKS" - LIL KIM FEAT. SISQO
The Queen Bee is hip-hop's most legendary sex symbol for a reason. On this skittering single, she rattles off all of the lovers she's left in her wake (Tony the Italian, a brother named "King Kong" for very specific reasons, etc.) with the self-proclaimed "Dragon" delivering a soulfully sleazy hook. Nobody does it nastier.

OKAY i finally updated my musical top 10 if anyone cares
jersey boys
mamma mia
rent
on your feet
a bronx tale
aint too proud
the prom
everybody's talking about jamie
wicked
kinky boots
as ive said before, this doesnt count disney shows or clueless as i consider myself inherently biased towards those and dont find it fair to judge them against others. my fav disney shows tho are lion king, beauty and the beast, and newsies, and i do consider those + clueless favs
so i shuffled a few things. most notably, rent moved up 3 spots. i made a post about this i think a few months ago, that i was thinking about moving it up potentially that far and for me thats a big deal bc bronx tale's been sitting up at #3 for like 6+ years. i just think my rent brainrot is too substantial to be denied. it does have a bit of an unfair advantage as far as causing me to spend nights upon nights looking into its history as it HAS many more years of history than the other shows do, but i mean thats just the truth of the matter that cant be denied. i still love all those shows dearly, but i think rent has scratched a particular part of my brain and i need to give it its due credit. its one of my only hyperfixations thats really had me like actively hyperfixating in the last year or so.
i DID also see a live production of tick tick boom last year and i feel like i need to throw that into the mix but i need to give that more thought. i did love it but its also very different from the movie. it also has only 3 actors so comparing it to these shows with large ensemble casts is really difficult.
but hey at least i made some progress today
