Diluc knew he was pathetic.
A shining starlit in the big city, a monopoly on the finest wines money could buy, an elusive bachelor featured in far too many articles. He had a personal Assistant, easy on the eyes, pretty as can be, the sweetest girl he'd ever come by. He owned half of the city, inherited estates, lived lavishly and yet here he was. Pegged down to a dumb, pathetic mess.
Diluc knew he had better things to put his time towards - The charity that wouldn't stop blowing up his emails for an opportunity to use his face. The pressing paperwork scattered across his hardwood desk, long forgotten for the night. The staccato pings from his phone, messages from who knows, trying to get his precious attention. And yet he couldn't bring himself to care.
Diluc was preoccupied.
His eyes were glued to his personal computer, into a monitor with far too many hertz necessary for his daily life. One hand types at his keyboard, the other, palms at his weeping, clothed cock. Diluc had an infatuation. A near obsession towards the pretty girl on his screen. His darling Assistant.
Diluc couldn't recall how and when he stumbled across your stream. He knew he felt shocked, and perhaps even appalled. His mind screamed at him to back out, click the x button, file for a termination of your contract to save his reputation and yet. He couldn't ignore the soft swell of his cock in his trousers, pressing against the hard seam of the fabric. His eyes were glued to your half naked form, clad in the softest, prettiest colour of lace and silk. A stark difference to your pin straight blouse and skirt, ridged and pristine, just as he was. His eyes danced around your set up, personalized with soft fairy lights and pretty things. His eyes zero in on you, focusing on the sweet squeeze of your pussy around a thick fake cock, pressed past the pretty lace of your panties. That night Diluc found something to look forward to - Every week day you'd be by his side with a clipboard and coffee in hand. One night a week, he watched your pretty cunt swallow up the thick, squishy length of a dildo, aided by his never ending donations and text praise.
"Hey, Red.. I missed you~" Diluc's daydream is cut short by your pretty voice ringing in his ears. Before he even knew it he had typed up a quick tip to let you know he was watching.
Dark_Red : [ You look gorgeous tonight ] $50
He wasn't wrong. You had tweaked your makeup from the last he saw you, opting for something a little more out there than your usual work look. He honestly preferred you this way, eyes dazzling in sparkles and colours, pretty blush rosing your cheeks oh so cutely. You dressed in a pretty set of lingerie, just covering enough for his imagination to run rampant. He wondered if you wore them under your blouse, pretty lacy panties under your the black pencil skirt. He wondered if maybe.. He could sneak a little peak sometime, spill a drink on your shirt, drop a pen and watch you pick it up.
"Thank you Red~ You're always so sweet to me.. Love it when you drop by, making me feel special~" You wink into the camera, coming close, pressing your breasts together with your arms. You blow a kiss to him, oh so sweet with a smile on your lips. His heart jumps, his neck warms with an embarrassingly red blush.
Dark_Red : [ It's always a pleasure to visit you, Darling. Missed you so much ♡ ] $70
His free hand types quickly, tapping away with his corny words, unashamed. You give the webcam a pretty pout, a soft downturned smile, a sweet glint in your eye. You wriggle in your spot, carefully tracing over the intricate lace and buckles adorned on your top. Your fingers threaten to pull at the fabric, snapping the elastic into your skin with a soft sigh. Diluc bites the inside of his cheek and squeezes at his clothed length.
"You guys wanna see my tits? Yeah..? Gotta beg for them big boy~ C'mon.. Beg to see them baby." Diluc should be embarrassed at how quickly he taps at his keys. He has to rival the other viewers, keep your attention solely on him.
Dark_Red : [ Please, show me your pretty tits Baby.. Gotta see them - Need to see you Sweetheart ♡♡ ] $150
His donations steadily rise, not that he would worry. Diluc had a near endless pool of money, he was sure he could swim in it if he so chose to. If he had to buy his way to you then so be it. He could spend it all on you, treat you to the fanciest foods, the prettiest dresses, serve at your hand and foot. He'd make sure you'd never have to work again for at least three life times.
"Nawh.. Red you're always spoiling me.. Am I your favourite girl?" You poke at him cheekily. Gods if only you knew.
Dark_Red : [ You're my only girl, Sweetheart.. My pretty girl. ] $100
You give an airy giggle, arousal spits from your throat and trickles into your laugh. Slowly, you pick at your pretty bra top, hooking a finger into each side of the cup, pulling the fabric down and revealing just a taste of your nipples. The chat floods as the action begins, with countless babbles of praise and degradation. Diluc blissfully ignores them, focusing his eyes on you, watching as you slowly unclasp the latch on your top. You hug your arms around your fallen, lacy top, barely keeping the cups secure to your body. Gods you were a tease and he loved it.
"Wanna see them?" You ask, squishing the soft plush of your tits together with a cock of your head. You batter your eyelashes, giving a cheeky smirk as the chat floods once again.
Dark_Red : [ Show me, Darling ] $100
Diluc types out shamelessly, eyes blown out and in awe, chest tight in anticipation for your next move. You read his message and shrug with a side grin, slowly letting the pretty fabric drop from your form. Diluc takes in a breath, no matter how many times he sees you, you always stun him. You giggle and cutely shake your chest to the camera, showing off your pretty, perky nipples, hardened from the cool air. You pinch at your nipples, whining softly before turning around, showing off your naked back and pretty, lacy panties.
You bend over, pretty ass to the webcam, hugged sweetly by the taught elastic of your underwear. Diluc audibly groans, pushing hard into the head of his cock. You wiggle your hips, making your soft ass jiggle for the camera. Your pretty pussy strains against the silky fabric, hugged tight, looking fat and puffy just for him. Gods he wants a taste, wants to sink his teeth into the fat swell of your cunny through your panties. He spots a wet patch in your underwear, pooling dark with your arousal. He'd give anything to press his nose into your cunt, lick and lap at you from behind, taste your sweet slick on his tongue.
He hears a soft humming giggle and watches your fingers play with the elastic of your waistband. Slowly, slowly you pull your panties down, revealing the sweet, slick mess of your pussy. Your arousal drools over your folds, sticking to the silk of your panties with a drippy string. Diluc absent-mindedly wets his lips with his tongue, poking it between his lips.
He doesn't know how he can look you in the eye the next day. Maybe he wanted you to know just how stupid he was for you, how pathetic he felt in your presence. How much he wanted to pin you to his cluttered desk and lap at your pretty, puffy pussy. How he wanted to dig his nose into your clit, kiss and lick and tease your sweet cunt with his lips. Gods knows he'd worship you, hump the air pathetically while he suckles at your achey clit, focusing on your pleasure over his own. He'd fuck you good, maybe even use one of your little bullet vibrators on your clit to make sure you gushed on his cock. He'd praise you, pet you, caress you, let you walk over him in your pretty, stiletto heels. You could take anything and everything from him and he'd surely thank you for it.
"Hmm~ Like what you see Baby?" You wiggle your hips again, showing off your bare cunt, slick and wet in the soft light of your room. Gods did he. The sight of you could make him cream in his pants. He works his button open, fishing out his aching hard cock, idly stroking at it while he watches you pretty pussy. You dip your fingers in, stretching out your tight walls, arousal making a mess over your hands and thighs. Diluc nearly drools, pumping at his cock while you finger yourself open, wet and slick and loud just for him to hear. He was deluded, and he didn't care.
Dark_Red : [ Love seeing you like this, Sweetheart ♡ ] $80
He relishes in the soft ding your stream makes with his fat donations, special and unique compared to the silly little blips in the chat. He hears you giggle again. You spread your fingers, pushing your wet pussy lips apart for the webcam to see. Your creamy arousal dribbles down your cunt, your hole clenches on nothing. He'd do anything to stick his own fingers into you, have you moaning and keening into him while he finger bangs your pussy. Have you squirt all over his lap and desk, messing up all the important paperwork he'd have out.
"Think I deserve a treat?" Your voice calls. You deserved everything in his eyes. He sees you reach over, grabbing something from off of the frame. He knows what's coming, he'd tuned in to enough of your streams before. The thick, squishy head of a dildo comes into view, practically shrinking your pretty pussy with its size in comparison. You tease at the camera, tapping the tip against your gushy hole, creating the wettest slapping sounds in his ears. The pings roll in, tiny little donations flood your chat, begging for you to shove it into your cunt.
Dark_Red : [ Wanna see you ride it Sweetheart.. Watch it bulge in your belly. Can you do that for me? ♡ ] $250
He watches you glance over and read his message. The smile you give nearly stops his heart. You face the camera front on, pretty body open for all to see. You get on your knees, resting your weight on your thighs, squishing them deliciously under you. You continue to tease the squishy tip of the dildo against your clit, tapping it gently on your core. You're giggly again, talking to the stream in a silly tone.
"Want me to ride it? Take it like a good girl? Yeah..?" You tease. Diluc's cock twitches in his hand, dribbling hot beads of pre down his knuckles. He taps at his keyboard, half delusional, drowning in anticipation.
Dark_Red : [ Take that cock Darling. Be a good girl and Ride it. Ride it for me.. Don't wanna disappoint me, do you? ♡ ] $2500
Diluc's finger slips on his keys, punching in one too many zeros into the donation balance. Fuck he didn't care. Not when you gasp so cutely, gush his name so sweetly, promising you'll treat him extra special for being such a sweetheart.
"Oh Red~ You treat me so well.. So, so well~ I'll take this cock just for you, 'Kay?" Your excitement isn't hidden, you lay it out all for him. He ignores the squabbling in the chat, the other men fighting for your attention, if anything, it drives him further into his delusion. You were his and his alone, his sweet assistant, his pretty thing, all spread out as per his request, all for him. Diluc watches you sink down on the thick, rubber toy, watching as the fat tip presses into your tummy. He grips his cock in time, squeezing at his length with his palm all to replicate the tight clench of your pussy.
"Ahn~ Your big cock feels so good~ Filling me up so full.. Love your big cock! Yeah~ Love it so much" He watches you babble as you ride on the thick length of the dildo. Your pretty tits bounce with your movement, framing the rest of your body oh so perfectly. Fuck. What'd he'd do to have you ride in his lap. To have you hug his big, thick cock with your warm cunt, keep him nice and snug while he works through the day.
He fists at his cock while you bounce on the thick, squishy length of your dildo. Your moans nearly rival the soft, squishy gushy slick of your cunt as you fuck yourself. He palms into his achey, velvet head, rubbing his thumb over the sticky slit of his cock. Would you lap at him? Lick up his salty pre? Chastise him for making a mess? For letting it dribble down the length of his cock? Gods, he hoped you would. Hoped you'd tell him off for being a dirty man, a pervert, chastise him for looking a little too long by edging him on and on. He'd let you do it too, anything to make you happy.
Yeah, he'd fill you up with his fat cock, choke you from the inside out. He'd plow you good, fuck up into your gummy spot, make sure you came again and again on his length. Diluc wants to worship you, spoil you with treats and his thick cock. He'd let you use him, any way you pleased he'd be at your mercy. Fuck he didn't care as long as it was with you.
He watches your pretty pussy suck in the fat length of the dildo, listens to your cute moans as you grind down again and again. He feels the all too familiar twist in his groin, a pulsing ache that threatens to make him whimper. Your moans flood his ears, soft staccato notes as you bounce and hump against the fake cock in your cunt. Diluc has half the mind to type out one last message.
Dark_Red : [ Always look so pretty when you cum, Darling.. Come for me, let it out sweetheart, cum on that cock. ] $3000
His bank account could run dry and he wouldn't care. As long as the pretty girl on his screen was happy. He sees you read his message, bouncing up and now harder and faster, squealing and babbling the sweetest sentences together. He fists at his cock, pumping it with the same vigor as you, milking at the tip with a flick of his wrist.
Diluc was right. You were pretty when you cum. He watches your sweet pussy quiver and squirt all over your bed sheets, making a sticky mess you'd surely have to clean up.
"Feels good! Feels so good! Cumming for you! Just for you! All for you Red~" You cry and cry, rubbing at your clit as you ride out your gushing orgasm on the fake cock. Diluc audibly growls, squeezing hard at his cock, shooting thick, rivulets of hot cum all over his knuckles. He grits his teeth hard, never taking his eyes off of your beautiful self. He milks at his length with his fist, surely sending him into a heated spike of overstimulation. He wanted to make it last, clasp his hand around his thick head just to imagine the feeling of your warm cunt wrapped around his cock. He relishes in your wispy whimpers as you come down, jumping when you bump your clit on the thick length of the dildo when you slowly pull it out of your pussy. He does it again, licks his lips, imagines how sweet you'd be if he wrapped his lips around your achey cunny.
You blow a sweet kiss to the camera, face dopey and smiley before the screen goes blank. Diluc is forced to reveal his own mess of a reflection, eyes blown wide, lips bitten red, hand and trousers soaked in a sticky mess of his cum. Diluc will retire for the night, slipping into a hot shower and make his way into bed.
And when he meets you again in the morrow, dressed up nice and neat, not a hair out of place. He'll smile, wish you 'Good Morning' and take a sip from his coffee. He'll ask how your night went and smile and nod when you shyly give him some other story. He knows all too well what you got up to. If he thinks about it for too long, he feels his pants get a little tighter.
Diluc knew he was pathetic - But he couldn't care less.

actually my weirdest megaman theory is that if the timeline really only first split at classic series and battle network (aka whether dr. light had biological kids or robot kids), and everything else before that was the same, then that means mu existed in both timelines. and the cyberspace in zero/zx is basically the wave world and cyber-elves are basically em beings. hertzes can affect the real world sometimes, like cyber-elves. it's possible for humans to be converted into em beings, and it's even possible for a human's soul to be converted into data and exist in the wave world...like a cyber-elf. strong em beings/cyber-elves like fm-ians and the mother elf can cause the wave world/cyberspace to merge into the real world. and they explain ciel's ability to see cyber-elves as her being "genetically modified." they genetically modified her to have murian dna so that she can see the wave world...
but that's just a theory. a game theory, if you will

Have you seen Tetris (2023)? Unrelated: what music do you like, or listen to?
-R
I have seen Tetris, yes! Just a few weeks ago, sometime in March, matter of fact, so your timing is particularly incredible. It first haunted me in music form, believe it or not, I kept getting songs from its soundtrack recommend on Spotify.
While I usually really don't like the KGB is in your walls stuff that the Western films always insist on showing, I'll make an exception for this movie because it's pretty fun. I actually liked the Evil Liar KGB had going on, I thought it was very funny. I do have one complaint about the whole thing, though. I wish the pixel animation was utilised throughout the whole movie, not just in That One Scene... :( Just small, little bits (ha) would have been fine...
Fun (not really) fact: I was first introduced to the character of Robert Maxwell through this movie (you have to forgive me for not giving many fucks about the aristocrats of Britain). I have then immediately learnt that his daughter is Ghislaine Maxwell. The Ghislaine Maxwell. Jeffrey Epstein's partner (in crime). How delightful...
What music do I like... That's a terrible question to ask me because I'm very passionate about music... I have playlists for everything I like, even Chernobyl related one... there's not a free minute in my day that I'm not listening to something. I associate music with everything.
I mean, judging solely by the fact that my wardrobe consists of one too many Sabaton and Rammstein shirts, I'd have to say I'm particularly fond of metal. And punk. And rock. I occasionally listen to Hollywood Undead because I discovered it when I was a... young teen, much too young to be listening to that kind of stuff lmao, and so I feel oddly nostalgic about them.
I really like the... weird and experimental stuff? If it has some kind of a connection with nature, I will probably like it. I've been a long time fan of Cosmo Sheldrake - and he just released a brand new album Eye To The Ear on the 12th of April AND a new single just a few days ago... it's everything I could have expected and more, truly. His brother, Merlin (whimsical names is the theme) is a biologist and he wrote a book about fungi, which I really like, but haven't finished because I didn't have the time nor brain capacity to take in all that new information.
And continuing with the theme of slighly weird, I also enjoy video games/movies OSTs. The creepier the better. Little Nightmares (I&II) soundtrack? Perfection. I talk a lot of shit about HBO's Chernobyl but that show's OST is phenomenal (and that's the last nice thing I have to say about it 🙄). From not horror-esque soundtracks: stuff from DOOM.
I've also been mesmerised by the Polish folk music used throughout The Peasants and have been regularly listening to the whole soundtrack. I need to rewatch that movie ASAP... more on movie tracks, I also really like Mad Max: Fury Road's and Moon (2009)'s OSTs.
I also like older, classic bands... Pet Shop Boys, Soft Cell, Bronski Beat, Depeche Mode... Kult, if we're talking local... And because I AM beating the toxic masculinity allegations: MARINA, Paris Paloma, Caro Emerald and sometimes even Lana Del Rey and Mitski. Other than that, I'm rarely attached to one particular artist or band, I usually like two or three songs and hate the rest haha
I'm gonna add a bunch of songs I like under the cut as a little treat, just because:

17, 29 for the writing ask!
hello!! thank you for this ask & sorry it took me absolutely ages to answer it.
17. talk to me about the minutiae of your current WIP. tell me about the lore, the history, the detail, the things that won’t make it in the text.
oh im so delighted by this question.
right now the thing that’s occupying like 99% of my brain is a kpop au in which L and light are ludicrously toxic fans of the kpop idol, beyond birthday, who is a random member of the kpop group RE:4PER. they are both entirely batshit, light perhaps slightly more than L, and have developed parasocial relationships with beyond that would put mikami to shame.
light is well-known amongst the fandom partially for organizing local cupsleeve events (tokyo is a big city!) but mostly for starting twitter drama with everyone who breathes. he is of the ‘protect the purity of our idols’ variety of fans and wishes to kill anyone who implies they are even slightly imperfect or have looked at another human being with romantic intent. he is convinced that beyond WILL meet him somehow and fall in love with him for real.
L is well-known for posting beautiful, immediate, and wildly misleading translations. his crown jewel is translating beyond’s infamous “human life has no value to me” as “people have many different valuable things to offer in this life.” light loves his translations. he is, however, ready to murder L because L lives to sexualize his favourite idol. L’s other fandom activity is writing very long, depraved and extremely terrible omegaverse RPF. (has light read them? yes, but — he insists — only because he has to know what the enemy is up to.)
anyway, in their normal lives they are complete messes. L has horrific levels of depression & a certain degree of agoraphobia. he hardly ever leaves his home for anything other than cupsleeve events, concerts or the kpop store where he buys his cds. light is deeply mentally ill & categorically refuses to acknowledge this. i feel like when you write dn fic you need to pick a point on the timeline for light and i have picked The Warehouse. he is at all times one bad thought away from collapsing on the ground and screaming at everyone around him. occasionally he does this for real. neither of them have any friends. light hangs out with his mom a lot, though.
obviously this is a lawlight au because of who i am as a person, so: L is deeply fixated on light because light is pretty much the only person who ever talks to him, even if he mostly does so to yell at L. one time L invited him over and light did his depression dishes for no reason & with zero judgement — he just felt it was probably difficult for L to use his sink. for like a week after L was able to cook things. he has been secretly in love with light ever since. light, for his part, has a massive crush on L because he looks like beyond. therefore, naturally, they develop an utterly batshit relationship in which L pretends to be beyond and they both convince themselves they are, somehow, not hooking up with each other.
so idk this is!! i guess pretty angsty but the concept behind it is that they come to support each other despite being genuinely very difficult people to be around. which they do! i wanted a story about mental illness in which the people involved behave in painful ways but are also humans with whom one can sympathize with and hopefully this will be that.
ANYWAY sorry this is probably long enough but. that’s where my brain lives currently.
29. Where do you draw your inspiration? What do you do when the inspiration well runs dry?
i answered this here BUT i will add onto it to give a special shoutout to twenty thousand hertz, which for some reason always fills me with Ideas, many of which objectively don’t have anything whatsoever to do with the actual subject matter of the episodes. they just do such fantastic interviews and constantly pull out fascinating details and insights about the world!! i think everyone who likes podcasts, audio or technology should listen to this. 99% invisible is also and ideas factory & i think game studies study buddies often has extremely in-depth media analysis which sometimes illuminates points of tension that would be fun to explore in fic.

From the Fanfic Writer Ask Game!
Are non-fandom friends aware that you write fanfic?
Hell yeah they are! I send them links whenever I publish. They don't always read them, but it's more about sharing my interests with the people in my life -- and showing the product of my labors that sometimes (often?) lead me to bail on drinks with them! -- rather than upping my AO3 stats.
What helps you focus when you write?
Leaning into my ADHD, I need usually need zero distractions when I write. No music, no tv, closed doors, phone on silents, etc. So when I really want to be head's down into a project, I'll normally head to my local library for the afternoon. I have also found that those brain wave playlists on spotify -- like effective beta waves or hertz waves or whatever -- really helps scratch that particular ADHD itch that allows me focus.

Some Character references (and Picrew stuff):
Tales in C minor:
Hertz Gianrico Viole:

look at that bbg A bit on the pale side ik (considering he's Italian).
Pronouns: He/him
Asexual, demiromantic. (Spoilers) Queerplatonic partners with Zero.
Random: Excellent cook. His first design was albino (but since Zero already look weird enough we're changing that).
Elias "Zero" Smith:

Pronouns: She/they (never cared much about her own gender)

Ivy Frye:
Tumblr media

Pronouns: She/her
Asexual. Heteroromantic (?)
Random: character inspo is an OOC character from a certain fandom.
Franz "Skye" Himmel:
Tumblr media
Yes he has long hair. And heterochromia for the same reason as Zero.
Pronouns: He/him
Graysexual, grayromantic. But generally doesn't care about relationships, pretty much married to his work and ideals.
Random: character inspo is from a the same fandom as Hertz's.

Perhaps the most incredible thing is that this was both literally true and something that might have appealed to the kind of people they were selling to.
It's been like six months so someone's probably already pointed this out, but it's not visible in ten seconds checking the notes so I'm gonna do it.
In some fields, FLOPS — FLoating-point Operations Per Second — are actually an incredibly important metric. The acronym is a little tortured but it's way easier to work with, linguistically, than FPOPS would have been, so cut people some slack.
Some background: Floating-point numbers are one solution to a problem computers have: everything needs to be encoded into binary, so you can't represent where the integer part of a number ends and the fractional part begins with a special symbol like a decimal point the way we do on paper. If you're only dealing with whole numbers, that's not an issue, of course (there's no fractional part to deal with) and if all the numbers you care about are around the same size you can just say "okay, the first X binary digits are the integer part and the rest are the fractional part" and it's fine. Both of these are what's called fixed-point or fixed-precision numbers (because the point that separates the whole and fractional parts is in a fixed place, and you have a fixed number of digits of precision to work with). But what if you're dealing with numbers of various different sizes? That's where floating-point numbers come in. These store every number with two parts, one saying what size-range it's in and one saying where it falls. If you've come across scientific notation for decimal numbers (like calling two million 2×10⁶) you get this idea: you store what's called a "mantissa" (that's the "how much" part, the 2) and an exponent (the "in what range" part, the 6) and you have a convention for what base you're going to apply that exponent to which you don't necessarily bother storing because it's the same everywhere (for scientific notation that's 10, but in computers we use 2 because binary). These let you store a vast range of numbers without needing huge amounts of storage most of which is zeroes for very large or very small ones. But! Working with them is more complicated than working with integers or other fixed-point numbers.
Hertz is cycles per second, which for a computer usually means how many basic instructions the thing can do every second, but a floating-point operation (doing something with two floating-point numbers) might take several instructions. Alternatively, with specialised hardware (such as for example, what you find in your graphics card) you might be able to do the same operation to lots of floating-point numbers all at once. It's for that reason that we needed a separate measure of speed for floating-point numbers.
And this was the era where Apple was working hard to sell it's products as the ideal platform for creative work (often involving graphics, and 3d rendering needs FLOPS to go quickly) and scientific computing (again, you need fast floating-point electronics for this). They also couldn't keep up on processor speeds at the time, so downplaying the number of megahertz their processors ran at while emphasising what their other hardware could do was a solid move.
So yeah, it sounds stupid but this actually means something, and the people they were really trying to sell to would genuinely have found this to be a decent argument for at least considering buying a Mac.

What are the Differences between Analog Signals and Digital Signals?
A signal is an electrical or electromagnetic quantity that transports data or information from one system to another. For data transmission, two types of signals are used: Analog signals and digital signals.
Analog and digital signals are very different in many ways. An analog signal is a continuous function, whereas a digital signal is a discontinuous function.
Typically speaking, analog and digital signals are two signal kinds that carry data or information. As far as analog signal vs digital signal is concerned, analog signals feature continuous electrical signals, whereas digital signals are otherwise without continuity in signals.
Types of Signals
Signals are classified into two types:
Continuous-time signals/ Analog signals: A continuous-time signal is any continuous function of time.
Discrete-time signals/ Digital Signals: A discrete-time signal is any series of real numbers separated by equal time increments (or samples).
Analog signals are used to create information-carrying signals in a variety of systems. Both in terms of quantities and time, these signals are continuous. As technology evolved, digital transmissions repealed the use of analog signals. Signals that are natural or occur naturally are analog signals. Since it denotes a quantity that is analogous to another measure, it is called so. Analog signals are known for use of medium to channelize the flow of information. Analog signals can be easily distorted, thereby losing clarity and quality.
Examples of Analog Signal
Any natural sound, human voice, and data read by analog devices are examples of analog signals.
Characteristics of analog signals
Analog signals denote a voltage or any physical quantity that is continuous and invariable and fluctuates in its quantity based on the parameter whose behavior changes according to time. These can be radio waves, broadcast waves
Further classification of analog signals based on characteristics:
Continuous-time signals and discrete-time signals
Analog signal processing makes use of the electronic devices to conduct several operations on the signals. These can be ranging from amplification to limiting. Certain tools used in processing analog signals are analog signal generators, power supply, oscilloscopes and certain other electronic equipment.
Measuring analog signals
For an analog signal source, its amplitude is measured in volts while the frequency of an analog signal is measured in Hertz. Thus, analog signals carry three categories of information – amplitude, frequency and phase
What is Digital Signal?
A digital signal is one that is a discrete function of time rather than a continuous signal. Digital signals are binary in nature and consist of discrete voltage values at discrete times. A digital signal, in essence, represents data and information as a sequence of discrete values at any given time. The digital signal has a limited number of values.
Characteristics of digital signals
The digital signal is a discrete delivery time and is a non-continuous signal. The bandwidth of digital signals is very high so, they are highly suitable for functions such as computing, digital operations, data storage, etc. The square wave function represents digital signals. These digital signals have fewer fluctuations, healthier instability, and do not fall prey to noise and disturbances, unlike analog signals.
The accuracy and precision of digital signals is also high due to the zero effect of sound on them. They also use less power and give zero errors
Difference between Analog Signals and Digital Signals
The table below highlights all the key differences between Analog and digital transmissions.
1. Nature of Signal:
Analog Signals: Continuous signals that vary smoothly over time. They represent information by changing the amplitude, frequency, or phase of the signal in a continuous range.
Digital Signals: Discrete signals that have distinct levels, usually represented by binary values (0s and 1s). These signals are non-continuous and switch between fixed levels.
2. Representation:
Analog Signals: Represented by sine waves or smooth curves. Examples include audio signals or temperature changes.
Digital Signals: Represented by square waves or step functions, with distinct values like on/off or high/low.
3. Transmission:
Analog Signals: More prone to degradation and noise during transmission, as interference can affect the signal’s smooth waveform.
Digital Signals: More resilient to noise and distortion. Digital signals are less affected by transmission errors because the values are either "high" or "low," making them easier to distinguish even with interference.
4. Bandwidth:
Analog Signals: Usually require more bandwidth for transmission due to the continuous nature of the signal.
Digital Signals: Generally use less bandwidth compared to analog signals for transmitting the same amount of information.
5. Signal Processing:
Analog Signals: Require complex filtering techniques for signal enhancement and noise reduction.
Digital Signals: Easier to process with algorithms and can be compressed, encrypted, or corrected using error detection methods.
6. Example Uses:
Analog Signals: Used in traditional telephones, radio broadcasting, and older TV systems.
Digital Signals: Used in computers, modern telecommunication systems, digital TV, and data storage.
7. Signal Accuracy:
Analog Signals: More accurate in representing real-world phenomena since many physical quantities are naturally analog.
Digital Signals: Less accurate in capturing fine details due to sampling, but the use of higher sampling rates in digital systems can mitigate this.

Study reveals ways in which 40Hz sensory stimulation may preserve brain’s “white matter”
Tumblr media
Early-stage trials in Alzheimer’s disease patients and studies in mouse models of the disease have suggested positive impacts on pathology and symptoms from exposure to light and sound presented at the “gamma” band frequency of 40 hertz (Hz). A new study zeroes in on how 40Hz sensory stimulation helps to sustain an essential process in which the signal-sending branches of neurons, called axons, are wrapped in a fatty insulation called myelin. Often called the brain’s “white matter,” myelin protects axons and insures better electrical signal transmission in brain circuits.
“Previous publications from our lab have mainly focused on neuronal protection,” says Li-Huei Tsai, Picower Professor in The Picower Institute for Learning and Memory and the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT and senior author of the new open-access study in Nature Communications. Tsai also leads MIT’s Aging Brain Initiative. “But this study shows that it’s not just the gray matter, but also the white matter that’s protected by this method.”
This year Cognito Therapeutics, the spinoff company that licensed MIT’s sensory stimulation technology, published phase II human trial results in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease indicating that 40Hz light and sound stimulation significantly slowed the loss of myelin in volunteers with Alzheimer’s. Also this year, Tsai’s lab published a study showing that gamma sensory stimulation helped mice withstand neurological effects of chemotherapy medicines, including by preserving myelin. In the new study, members of Tsai’s lab led by former postdoc Daniela Rodrigues Amorim used a common mouse model of myelin loss — a diet with the chemical cuprizone — to explore how sensory stimulation preserves myelination.
Amorim and Tsai’s team found that 40Hz light and sound not only preserved myelination in the brains of cuprizone-exposed mice, it also appeared to protect oligodendrocytes (the cells that myelinate neural axons), sustain the electrical performance of neurons, and preserve a key marker of axon structural integrity. When the team looked into the molecular underpinnings of these benefits, they found clear signs of specific mechanisms including preservation of neural circuit connections called synapses; a reduction in a cause of oligodendrocyte death called “ferroptosis;” reduced inflammation; and an increase in the ability of microglia brain cells to clean up myelin damage so that new myelin could be restored.
“Gamma stimulation promotes a healthy environment,” says Amorim, who is now a Marie Curie Fellow at the University of Galway in Ireland. “There are several ways we are seeing different effects.”
The findings suggest that gamma sensory stimulation may help not only Alzheimer’s disease patients but also people battling other diseases involving myelin loss, such as multiple sclerosis, the authors wrote in the study.
Maintaining myelin
To conduct the study, Tsai and Amorim’s team fed some male mice a diet with cuprizone and gave other male mice a normal diet for six weeks. Halfway into that period, when cuprizone is known to begin causing its most acute effects on myelination, they exposed some mice from each group to gamma sensory stimulation for the remaining three weeks. In this way they had four groups: completely unaffected mice, mice that received no cuprizone but did get gamma stimulation, mice that received cuprizone and constant (but not 40Hz) light and sound as a control, and mice that received cuprizone and also gamma stimulation.
After the six weeks elapsed, the scientists measured signs of myelination throughout the brains of the mice in each group. Mice that weren’t fed cuprizone maintained healthy levels, as expected. Mice that were fed cuprizone and didn’t receive 40Hz gamma sensory stimulation showed drastic levels of myelin loss. Cuprizone-fed mice that received 40Hz stimulation retained significantly more myelin, rivaling the health of mice never fed cuprizone by some, but not all, measures.
The researchers also looked at numbers of oligodendrocytes to see if they survived better with sensory stimulation. Several measures revealed that in mice fed cuprizone, oligodendrocytes in the corpus callosum region of the brain (a key point for the transit of neural signals because it connects the brain’s hemispheres) were markedly reduced. But in mice fed cuprizone and also treated with gamma stimulation, the number of cells were much closer to healthy levels.
Electrophysiological tests among neural axons in the corpus callosum showed that gamma sensory stimulation was associated with improved electrical performance in cuprizone-fed mice who received gamma stimulation compared to cuprizone-fed mice left untreated by 40Hz stimulation. And when researchers looked in the anterior cingulate cortex region of the brain, they saw that MAP2, a protein that signals the structural integrity of axons, was much better preserved in mice that received cuprizone and gamma stimulation compared to cuprizone-fed mice who did not.
A key goal of the study was to identify possible ways in which 40Hz sensory stimulation may protect myelin.
To find out, the researchers conducted a sweeping assessment of protein expression in each mouse group and identified which proteins were differentially expressed based on cuprizone diet and exposure to gamma frequency stimulation. The analysis revealed distinct sets of effects between the cuprizone mice exposed to control stimulation and cuprizone-plus-gamma mice.
A highlight of one set of effects was the increase in MAP2 in gamma-treated cuprizone-fed mice. A highlight of another set was that cuprizone mice who received control stimulation showed a substantial deficit in expression of proteins associated with synapses. The gamma-treated cuprizone-fed mice did not show any significant loss, mirroring results in a 2019 Alzheimer’s 40Hz study that showed synaptic preservation. This result is important, the researchers wrote, because neural circuit activity, which depends on maintaining synapses, is associated with preserving myelin. They confirmed the protein expression results by looking directly at brain tissues.
Another set of protein expression results hinted at another important mechanism: ferroptosis. This phenomenon, in which errant metabolism of iron leads to a lethal buildup of reactive oxygen species in cells, is a known problem for oligodendrocytes in the cuprizone mouse model. Among the signs was an increase in cuprizone-fed, control stimulation mice in expression of the protein HMGB1, which is a marker of ferroptosis-associated damage that triggers an inflammatory response. Gamma stimulation, however, reduced levels of HMGB1.
Looking more deeply at the cellular and molecular response to cuprizone demyelination and the effects of gamma stimulation, the team assessed gene expression using single-cell RNA sequencing technology. They found that astrocytes and microglia became very inflammatory in cuprizone-control mice but gamma stimulation calmed that response. Fewer cells became inflammatory and direct observations of tissue showed that microglia became more proficient at clearing away myelin debris, a key step in effecting repairs.
The team also learned more about how oligodendrocytes in cuprizone-fed mice exposed to 40Hz sensory stimulation managed to survive better. Expression of protective proteins such as HSP70 increased and as did expression of GPX4, a master regulator of processes that constrain ferroptosis.
In addition to Amorim and Tsai, the paper’s other authors are Lorenzo Bozzelli, TaeHyun Kim, Liwang Liu, Oliver Gibson, Cheng-Yi Yang, Mitch Murdock, Fabiola Galiana-Meléndez, Brooke Schatz, Alexis Davison, Md Rezaul Islam, Dong Shin Park, Ravikiran M.
