sunday hikagaku kenkyuusho 52
[continued from here! as always, rough translation from the chinese scans by minkunminkun, and since there’s quite a lot of text on each page I’ve split them up by frame – (text) or [text] are lines not in speech bubbles, // indicates a change in speaker. enjoy!]

Sunday Hikagaku Kenkyuusho (Sunday Unscientific Research Institute) | Investigation 52 – Aoyama Gosho's Miscalculation (?) | Insider Info on Conan!!
by Yokoyama Yuuji
[First page note: (Previous issue content) After infiltrating the workshop, and successfully hearing intriguing insider info from Aoyama-sensei…]
FILE.1 The Only Miscalculation
“To this day, in Conan, it has occurred just once that only after finishing the first chapter of the series,” “I realised that the trick in fact can’t work…”
“Ehh––!?”
[Continuing from last week, we are currently broadcasting to everyone from Aoyama-sensei’s workshop.]
“What did you do then!?” “By then it would’ve been too late to edit the first chapter…”
“That’s it!!”
Tumblr media
“That’s Conan-kun’s only miscarriage of justice!!” // (Conan: I got the wrong killer!!) // “No such case happened.”
“In playing cards, one of them is J, right?” “I’d always mistakenly thought that J meant a prince.” (Because K is ‘king’, Q is ‘queen’, so…)
“It’s that one! The story where the Black Organisation’s target was identified from a keyword!” (That file with Kir…) // “Correct!”
“The initial idea was that because J was a prince, so the target is the entrepreneur’s son!”
“But I only discovered that J actually referred to a soldier while drawing the second chapter… ah, it’s all over, what to do now!” (So scary–!!)
“A former Self Defense Force member who’d already appeared by then could be considered a soldier! So starting from there the target was changed. I was worried sick––.” (Not an easy feat at all!!) // “In a way, that was the hardest case!” (I’m a bit happy to know that Aoyama-sensei can make mistakes too) // “Nothing felt off at all while reading it back then…” (There’s such an insider info even…)
FILE.2 The Continuing Anime
“Speaking of that, there was another unexpected thing…”
“Please tell me about that too!!” (Errors! I want!!)
Tumblr media
“Haibara first appeared in volume 18,” “But the original plan was to let her appear around volume 10.”
“Ehh––!?” (Delayed by 8 volumes!?) // “Actually I planned for her immediate appearance, and after all I did draw a silhouette of her when her sister Miyano Akemi was killed.” (In volume 2.)
“But coincidentally, the decision to animate was made then…” // (From volume 2: “That person is one the Organisation needs, unlike you…”) // (Indeed!!)
“And then in the anime, the ending of her sister’s chapter was a little too tragic, so it was changed to her actually not being killed. Also, she was changed to someone unconnected to the Black Organisation.” // (Unconnected, you say?)
“You mean it’s impossible for the manga and anime plotlines to be consistent!?” (Could it be!)
“Correct, and I originally thought that it was fine to leave it like that, since the anime would end very quickly after all, but then it kept going on and on… becoming a situation where I wanted to let Haibara appear but couldn’t.” (Hahaha) // “Aoyama-sensei’s really amazing, having to consider the movie and anime as well…” (Anime love!!) (So that’s how it is…)
“In the end, I really couldn’t wait any longer, so I told them that I was going to let Haibara appear. So the anime redid a story where her sister died.” // (Oh–!!)
Tumblr media
FILE.3 The True Identities
“Just now we learned that Aoyama-sensei writes stories while planning the big picture. Then can you talk a little about the characters too!?” (Question!) // “Characters?”
“Among the people who appear in Conan, there’s a lot of ‘who exactly is this guy!?’-type characters, right?” [Akai <- Full marks for suspiciousness!!]
> “Uwah– this guy is definitely an enemy!!” (Scary!!)
> [Afterwards] “Oh, a friend~~~~” (Whew–)
“Are those characters’ real identities decided on before they appear!?” (Such as Akai and Amuro…) // “Correct, correct!” (Of course!)
“Having a character who you always assumed to be an enemy turn out to be a friend – that feeling of dependability when you find out the truth” “That’s the best.” // “It’s true!!” (Wow)
“But even if I’d already decided, I won’t necessarily say it during discussion meetings.” (Heh heh heh) // “Oh?” (Keeping it secret even from the editor…?)
“With Akai for example, during the meeting when he first appeared, I let everyone think that he was just a passenger, and then in the last frame of that chapter I suddenly had him say the ‘Target has not appeared…’ line.”
> EDITOR: “……” (Shocked…)
Tumblr media
> EDITOR: “Eeehhhhh!? Who is this guy!?” (And what is he talking about!!) // “He’s FBI, ha ha ha.” ٩( ๑╹ ꇴ╹)۶
“Because I really want to see this kind of surprised response–.” (Vermouth’s one succeeded too––– Uhuhu––) “Now I’m happiest when drawing Wakasa-sensei, you know–.” // (The mysterious physique…!!)
FILE.4 The Light In The Eyes
“Can I further ask something about character design?”
“If I had to pick one of the unique characteristics that would identify Aoyama-sensei’s manga at a glance” “I think it’d be the way you draw light in the eyes.”
“How did this drawing style that’s never been seen outside of Aoyama-sensei’s work come about?” (This vertical bar of light!)
“I invented this during my debut!” (Eh heh) // “What an amazing invention…”
“But it isn’t a completely original invention either…” (Nod)
Tumblr media
“Ehh!? You mean there was a mangaka who drew eyes like this?” (Who is it!) // “……”
“You’re too naive, Yokoyama-kun…”
“It wasn’t a manga…”
(Kyaaaa) // “The origin of this type of eyes,” “Appeared in an anime……”
“Just like last week, stay tuned for next time!” (Yeah!) // “Who the hell are you!?” // (Sorry, sorry––)
“There completely aren’t any new people who mimic this drawing style for eyes…” (Hohoho…) // “It’d be recognised immediately…” (He looks a little lonely…) // TO BE CONTINUED
[Last page note: Next week, in the issue commemorating Aoyama-sensei reaching 200 million volumes, the Institution Head has obtained even more explosive insider info!?]
