Designing Persephone and Perseus : A Retrospective Guide

Hi everyone, it's Cici the creator of Persephone's Descent, a yandere horror visual novel game inspired by the myth of Hades and Persephone. I figured for an interesting post today I would go into how I designed the male and female versions of the main character. See Persephone's Descent has this cool mechanic in the final game where you get to choose the gender of both Persephone and Hades, allowing for either straight or gay relationships. At it's core, Persephone's Descent is a horror game, so even the good endings are going to be a little dark, and no choice will be without consequences. But you will be able to forgive and redeem Hades in the final chapter if that's what you choose.

Anyway back to what this post is actually about, the long process I took of designing Persephone and Perseus.

Fun fact, it was actually my TikTok audience that made the final decision of whether or not to add a male version of Persephone, so you can thank them for your toxic yaoi route lmao. Persephone's Descent was originally going to be a webcomic called Deceit and Daffodils, and was going to be about the long story of how Hades rose to power as king of the Underworld, lost his first wife Leuce, and eventually became obsessed with Persephone. Persephone's original design featured green leaf hair in the shape of a giant bush that would change in different ways due to her moods. But in the end i felt like that was too much like Lore Olympus's Kore. After a bunch of studying and googling (SOOOO MUCH GOOGLING). I found out one of Persephone's sacred animals was deer. So, I figured why not add deer antlers since my version of Persephone is meant to be a more gentle, innocent victim in the game. Persephone and Perseus actually look quite a bit like their mother Demeter.

Demeter...obviously was not happy when she found out what happened to Persephone. But back to designing Persephone. I figured going with greener colors would make her pop more in Hades's dark red underworld in-game. For Perseus , it was as simple as drawing a male variation of the original design (I know vague as hell but I don't know how else to explain it at the moment lol...) What we toons does mod normally read? Any recommendation?

//All things considered, I’m the one who should be asking that. I honestly don’t use webtoon very much, and I think based on my recent posts, you can easily figure out why. I’ve heard that Lore Olympus is worth checking out, but other than that.

//With that being said, I have recently been reading a story on Webtoon called Wayne Family Adventures by CRC Payne and Starbite, which is VERY good. If you don’t know what it is, it’s basically a slice of life story that revolves around Batman and all his protégé’s, acting as a dysfunctional and troubled, but happy family.

//And when I say all his protégé’s I mean ALL his protégé’s! Ordinarily you’d think that it’d just be Barbara Gordon, Dick Grayson, Jason Todd and Tim Drake, like most official media, but NO! Basically EVERYONE is here; Damien Wayne, Stephanie Brown, Cassandra Cain, Duke Thomas, Luke Fox, and like, SO MANY MORE.

//And it covers basically all the issues that come with being the adoptive father of so many masked vigilante’s, not only teaching them to fight crime, but also trying to give them a normal life, which is increasingly difficult because basically all these kids have deep-rooted childhood trauma just like Bruce does, and it covers all its bases in the most spectacular fashion. One chapter could be centred around one of the characters PTSD (take your pick which one because holy shit) and the next could be a silly chapter where they all have a prank war against each other. And I think it’s great.

Personally: He is a very sweet and romantic guy, who loves his family, but he can yandere, when it comes with people he didn’t like.

Dislike:Theseus getting away with everything and her love ones being hurt.

Personality:She is a kind heart young woman who love her family and she can be turn on or doesn’t mind of Eros’ yandere personality. She is a very clever and knows how to solve her problems and sometimes ask everyone for help and she loves helping people out.

Friends: Eros(Husband), Hedone(Daughter),Ariadne(they became best friends, because they are formal princesses),Dionysus(likes his fun personality) and everyone(because they her her reunite with her husband).

Lore Olympus Eros and Psyche

Their relationship is kinda sweet and cute, but there is nothing going on that is outside of Hades and Persephone, all they do is to make people fall in love and villains/Stocks Apollo

We’re sticking with just yhs and the little bit of Tokyo soul I know about. For now we’re keeping yuki and Sam as officially the fucked up couple, and Sam as a definite abuser to Grian and Taurtis. ✨lore✨

There are sadly a few reasons why these double standard exist.

One of them is Medusa, more specificly Ovid's Medusa. For a lot of "feminist" (most of the time they are only in the marketing)/modern retellings it's much more easier to show her as a "sad character, a victom, who's life is a tragedy, and did nothing wrong in her life", if they simply ignore the original myth.

It's "easier" to make the reader, or viewer like Medusa as the main character if the writer, ignors Danae and how if Perseus doas not bring Medusa's head, she will have to marry a man she doas not want to (baicly ignoring a woman's story, in a story that claims to give the women in Greek mythology a "voice"). Similarly writng Andromeda and Perseus's realetionship as bad, unhappy, and abusive will make it easier for the writer to make the reader/viewer to belive that "Seee how bad he is?! He did not just killed our precious little Mary Su- Medusa! He also horrible to his wife!" (agein ignoring why Perseus killed Medusa).

Igrnoring the original myth is also a reason why Persephone and Hades is this popular and romanticised.

A lot of people ignore the context in order to cereat they "pastel aethetic girl x dark aesthetic boy", or the "Younge naive and posibly shy female lead meets the dark mysterious older posible yandere male lead, and the fall in love, but the female lead's overbearing and hobbyless mother is against it!" type stories. And not to mention that things like Lore Olympus playd a big part in populasing it.

So what did we learn? People should start romaniticising Perseus and Andromeda's realetionship.

I’m so fucking mad that there were multiple plays (both Greek and Roman) about Andromeda that expand on her character and her relationship with Perseus and her parents but they’re all lost or fragmented and now ppl can’t view Andromeda as anything more than a damsel in distress with no agency bc they wouldn’t bother to read between the lines with the sources we do have and do their research about her.

Not really, havent played or watched either of the two things you're talking about, and I havent read any of Rick Rordian's books too. I guess I've been obsessed with them after our class got to do this who assignment on Greeks, and we did a short play too (I was Hermes hehe).

The story of Hades and Persephone was quite attracting to me, probably because of the whole "yandere" factor in it, no? Some people theorise that it was actually Persephone who was the dominant, mean one while Hades was just so in love and kind of a pushover, not the other way around.

And then theres the story about Eros and Psyche. Oh and one of my favourites: Aphrodite x Ares while Aphrodite was married to Hephaesteus. Like I straight felt so bad for Hephaesteus, he was cast out of heaven by his parents for not being pretty enough and then found his wife cheating on him :( homeboy would make an absolutely great yandere.

Oh and what about the twins, Apollo and Artemis? So amazing, love them. Apollo and Cassandra's story, where she rejected his advances and was punished by being made to utter true prophecies that no one believed. Or when Artemis shot one of Apollo's lovers when she proved to be unfaithful. Best siblings <3
