Green Sweatshirt and Jeans + Style With a Smile Link Up
I went so long without wearing jeans, and then like buses, two styles came along that are now part of my regular casual wardrobe. First the Marks and Spencer palazzo style, and then these barrel leg jeans. They make a change from joggers, which is what I often wear when I’m at home. Wearing an elevated casual outfit not only makes me feel better because I’ve made an effort, it also means I don’t…

Alex Recommends: April Books
I have been so incredibly busy this month and I'm only just getting a chance to sit down to write this. I have been getting a lot of work recently and a lot of it is taking up a lot of time and mental energy. However, I have also been in a great reading mood, so I've read a lot too!
The Women's Prize shortlist was announced last week and I've been slowly making my way through the longlist. This has been such great fun and I'm delighted that I still actually have three of the shortlist to read. Two of my recommendations this month come from the longlist and one of them made the shortlist, so I can certainly say that it's a fantastic selection this year. Check it out here if you haven't been following the announcements.
I don't know whether it's because I've been working so much or because I've had a few disappointments this month but my mental health hasn't been great. I've had a few nights recently where I've just cried and been overwhelmed with hopelessness when I think about the future. Mark has been amazing at keeping me grounded through it all and it's certainly not my personal or romantic life that I'm worried about.
Recently, I've been harboring some serious desires to get back into publishing but it's even harder than it has ever been now. It often feels like the hard work that I've been putting in for years just doesn't really count for much anymore and there are few things that are more disappointing than that realisation. I guess it's that age-old adage that when one area of your life is finally sorted, another area will start to fall apart or be severely lacking.
Anyway, that was a rather lengthy, not particularly uplifting intro, so I think it's about time I gave you some reading recommendations! Hope you're all keeping well. -Love, Alex x
FICTION: Because Of You by Dawn French.

As the new millennium rings in, two families are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their babies in a London hospital. One mother goes home with a healthy baby girl while the other suffers the ultimate tragedy. 17 years later, Minnie is about to become a mother, which forces a terrible secret from years ago to surface with devastating results. This heartbreaking novel explores motherhood and the idea of what family really is. As it's written by the wonderfully funny Dawn French, there is some comedy in there too but it's mostly a book about love in its many guises and the power of forgiveness. Don't go into it expecting a laugh a minute just because of who the author is. You'll be sobbing your heart out!
LITERARY FICTION: Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi.

Gifty is a neuroscience student at Stanford University, studying reward-seeking behaviour in mice. Her brother Nana died of a heroin overdose years before and now her suicidal mother has moved in with her and struggles to get out of bed. Gifty is desperate to make sense of the relentless suffering that has haunted her young life and while her research is helping, it's the faith of her childhood and her Ghanaian culture that she finds herself leaning towards. This beautifully written book is a heart-wrenching story of family, identity and a desperate search for answers to life's big questions. With themes of everlasting love and agonising grief, this stunning novel is incredibly powerful and thought-provoking.
MIDDLE-GRADE: The Unbelievable Biscuit Factory by James Harris.

In Haddie's hometown of Normalton, there is a biscuit factory that definitely isn't a front for a top secret science lab. The orange fluffy monsters that have started appearing out of thin air certainly aren't there and there is definitely nothing weird going on in Normalton. Haddie and her friends absolutely do not have to save the world armed with nothing but an electric guitar. This hilarious madcap adventure is nothing short of completely bizarre. As well as a celebration of imperfection and friendship, The Unbelievable Biscuit Factory is a horrifically accurate depiction of how humans choose to ignore the rapidly imploding reality around us. Completely ridiculous but fantastic fun!
FANTASY: Malice by Heather Walter.

Alyce is half Vila, which means that she is a much-feared, very powerful being in the kingdom of Briar. To keep her under control, she is dubbed the Dark Grace and allowed to use her blood magic to create elixirs for those who wish to do dark deeds. When the cursed Princess Aurora seems to take an interest in Alyce, suspicions arise. But Alyce may be about to unravel the secrets of her past and her truth will come to light. This clever amalgamation of fairytales has elements of Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast and Sleeping Beauty. The romance between Alyce and Aurora is very slow burning with a very satisfying culmination. There is a dark, sultry essence to the whole book which ultimately champions outcasts and threatens revenge on their oppressors. I haven't been in the mood to read fantasy for a while but I devoured this one!
THRILLER: Mirrorland by Carole Johnstone.

During their isolated, traumatic childhood in an ominous Gothic Edinburgh house, twins El and Cat created a dark imaginary world called Mirrorland where they'd have adventures with pirates, witches and clowns. As adults, the twins have drifted apart. Cat is living as a struggling writer in LA while El married Ross, the boy who lived next door to their childhood home, where El and Ross still live. But now El has gone missing and Cat is called back to Scotland to confront the past and follow the clues as to where El could have gone. Mirrorland is definitely one of the darkest, most twisted thrillers I've read in a long time. I really wasn't sure what was real and what wasn't, which added to the mindfuckery of it. It's an intense exploration of the uniqueness of twinship where the twists just keep coming. Ice-cold and very clever, I have a feeling that this book will have a good year!

Lover album first listen thoughts
As with reputation, I’m probably going to listen to this album in full day of release, one month in, two months in, three months in, six months and a year in to see how my feelings change over time. With that in mind, these are my first listen thoughts:
I Forgot That You Existed: This gave me such Kate-Miller Heidke vibes and I want to cry because I know they will never collab. Like honestly though, go check out Kate’s stuff if this was your favourite because you will not be disappointed. It also feels like Bad Blood’s older, wiser sister. The laugh hit hard because that moment when you realise that someone who made your life hell no longer rules it is incredible and that laugh is the best way I’ve seen that represented.
Cruel Summer: The production for this song was exactly what I was expecting. I imagine it will work well on tour, but it’s not my favourite at this point. However I will say that the bridge is my favourite part of the song for now.
Lover: This song has been a grower for me. As much as Cruel Summer wasn’t my favourite, Lover coming off it feels right. Lover is a warm song that gives me Summer Nighttime feels and makes me miss being in a relationship. It also makes me want to learn how to properly ballroom/waltz dance. Again, the bridge is still my favourite part of the song.
The Man: Literally the first two things I wrote about this was “YAAS Bop!” and “MOOD!!!” so that pretty much sums up my feelings on it. I love the “Eeey!” moments and just in general, it was one of my favourites from the album. I also think it was the perfect choice to put before The Archer but find it interesting that it came right after Lover.
The Archer: The only fault I will give this song is that I feel like it only gives its strongest punch when you’re in a specific mood. Like in those moments, it seems the perfect song, but otherwise, I can see myself and have already been like “It’s a good song” and left it with that. Again though, it comes off The Man perfectly as a contrast piece.
I Think He Knows: This was definitely a far boppier production than I expected when I saw the title of this song, but it works. It’s another good song for tour and for once, the bridge is my least favourite part of the song. All up, it’s a good song, but not a favourite. I will say that “Boy, I understand” had me saying damn though.
Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince: I love the production of this song. It gives movie plot/soundtrack vibes with the way it builds up and changes in the bridge. It also gives Lana Del Rey vibes. My only complaint with this song is how much I love the lyric “Boys will be boys, where are the wise men?” because I wish she had done a full song based on that.
Paper Rings: Again, this was not the production I expected for this song. It definitely is a feel good bop that I could see in teen movies and cute though.
Cornelia Street: The production was exactly what I imagined and quite frankly this was an automatic fave for me. That’s really all I’ve got to say about it.
Death By A Thousand Cuts: When the secret sessioners said this was the most emotional song for Taylor, this was not the production I expected. I kinda wish it was a piano ballad if I’m honest because I do feel the production overpowers the emotion of the lyrics.
London Boy: The speaking at the start felt awkward to me. All up it was a cute, okay song though.
Soon You Will Get Better: I’m glad we got one slow, acoustic song on this album to be honest. I really don’t know how this wasn’t the most emotional for Taylor though considering it was the one time I almost cried throughout the album. Basically this song hit a little too hard considering my mum’s current mental issues and how she has said that she doesn’t plan to get better and plans to be dead in the next decade. But alas, it’s still probably going to be one of the ones I listen to most on this album though.
False God: Interesting start + production. I was also shocked that the New York line we got came from this song. Basically this song was not was I was expecting at all. Right now, it’s not a favourite.
You Need To Calm Down: Still a bop and still a favourite. Not much else needs to be said.
Afterglow: Why did the first like 3 notes of this remind me of The Weeknd? Anyway, definitely had some “Learn to apologise” Elle interview tea here. In some ways, it feels like the verses from ME!’s older, wiser sister. It’s probably one I will listen to a lot.
ME!: Still my least favourite from the album and probably the one I’m gonna skip the most. Also though, apparently spelling is not fun anymore? I will say though that it comes off Afterglow really well and that even though I like the solo version more, I do like Brendon and Taylor’s voices on it so I hope they work on something I like in the future.
It’s Nice To Have A Friend: This feels more like an interlude to me and hence feels it should have been earlier. As such, the production wasn’t what I was expecting. It was sweet, but realistically I don’t know how much I’m going to listen to it in the future.
Daylight: This was definitely more synthy than I expected. At the beginning of the song, I felt like this could have worked equally well as an opener to the album, but as the production built up, it definitely gave me more closer vibes. I love the closing statement and this whole song is a recovery mood.
All up this album was a good one. As of right now, I’d probably place it as a tied third place with Fearless and behind RED and reputation in my Taylor Swift album rankings.

June’s top Instagram posts
See what made the top spots! 🍒🕺✨

Hey, hi, hello! Can you believe we’re halfway through this year already?
ANYWAY! Now we’re in July, we’re looking back to June to the best-performing Instagram posts of the month! As predicted, tie dye has remained popular, as has vintage sportswear! In the throes of a full-on summery spell, swimwear has also increased in popularity, and pipped our other most-liked posts to the top spot!
5) In at fifth place for June, was this satisfying tie dye line-up from Lime Blonde! As we’ve mentioned a few times, we’ve seen a huge increase in the demand for tie dye items during lockdown. This simple image got 1.7k likes.
Tip: If you have any relevant product, get them up on your Instagram, now!

4) Our fourth most-liked post of the month was this gorgeous shot from Indigo Child. As June is the month of Pride, we wanted to hand over the mic to our LGBTQ+ boutiques. Sarah shared a really personal and heart felt message about Indigo Child’s new Pride collection in the caption, which our followers really identified with; it got 1.7k likes and had 21 comments.
Tip: Don’t be afraid to get personal on your social media. Share as much (or as little - you do you!) info about yourself as you feel comfortable with. We really notice that our followers love this type of personal, real content; it really helps to build a relationship that goes deeper than the usual brand-customer dynamic.

3) Our third most-liked image of the month was this classic vintage Nike sweatshirt shot. It ticks all the boxes: big brand, visible logo, headless and vintage sportswear. It got 2.7k likes.
Tip: Keep an eye on our trading posts to find out which brands are most popular and searched-for on site each month. If you sell vintage and stock those brands, make sure you communicate this to your followers on social!

2) Our second most-liked image of the month was this beautiful shot from Yaa Yaa London. The colours are really vibrant, and the product is really unique which goes to explain the huge engagement this post got: 3.7k likes! The main @asos account also picked it up for a regram.
Tip: Images with cool nail art tend to get good engagement, so if you have rings and other jewellery, try shooting it on a model with cute nails. Which is also a good excuse to give yourself a cute manicure!

1) Our best-performing post of the month! Drumroll please... this swimwear shot from Boho Rose. Again, it ticks a few boxes of things we know always work well: it’s headless, and it has a vintage-look filter! Plus, it’s of course super relevant product, as we’re in summer. The caption “100% wish we were here” is also relatable, which always helps increase engagement. It got 5.6k likes!
Tip: Have you tried different filters on your images? Especially relevant if you sell vintage, these grainy effects are often really popular and help communicate that your product is from a past decade!.

Progress Wembley Blog
Hello! Welcome to another blogging adventure courtesy of Jamie. Sit back, relax, make yourself at home people :) this blog is spoiler free.
So Sunday saw me take a trip South for Progress Wrestling & their biggest show to date at the world famous Wembley Arena. It’s a massive thing that a UK Independent company can run never mind sell well in a venue this size. Proud fanboy moment. I didn’t even let loosing my mobile (including ticket, travel home etc) the previous night phase me. Just means my notes for this one are kinda from memory! But I’ll do my best.
Progress from day 1 were told, you can’t run an independent wrestling company out of London. It won’t work. Yet here we year merely years later, running Wembley. Hats (SnapBacks) off to you! First contest sees the final independent date for now NXT Bound Mat Riddle facing off against Mark Haskins. Haskins, I think, deserved a big spot at Wembley & to face The Bro in his last independent date is a huge spot. The match itself is great as expected. High kicks, ufc style hip tosses, Haskins proving he’s capable of stepping into the spotlight when needed. A highly enjoyable match when it goes up on demand!
Match number 2, and we’re into Women’s Title Action. Toni Storm & Millie Mckenzie facing defending champ, the fashionista Yaas Queen Jinny. I like my women’s wrestling as we know, and this match for me was enjoyable. When this goes up on Demand Progress, watch the very confusing after match spot with Jinny’s Hause Of Couture though. Maybe all will be explained at a later date but its a bit ‘What?’ After a good, solid contest. Well battled ladies!
Third match of our eight match card & we see our second title defence. This time we see Doug Williams the British legend squaring up against future British Wrestling legend Trent Seven. Now remember if Trent wins the belt, Doug must retire. It’s a high stakes affair, emotionally charged & hard hitting. As expected from the Atlas division. As mentioned above, spoiler free blog so... Watch when it’s out on demand.
Our first half main then.Jimmy F’n Havok vs the returning Paul Robinson. In a No DQ contest. If you come in expecting a dragon suplex & roll up finish you’re very wrong & won’t find it in this contest. Light tubes, chairs, thumb tacks.. Weapons & violence galore. Great stuff!
Second half then & we begin with the awaited announcement that Super Strong Style 16 next year will return to Alexandra Palace. Excellent! First match though is the Tag Team Thunderbastard. Eight teams, one ring, two teams start. Every 2 minutes another team enters. Usual TB rules. First time I’ve seen the defending champs Flamita & Bandito live & I was blown away with the athleticism & ability. Dude, watch the over the top rope action when it goes online. I was marking out! I think my friends love of flippy moves has rubbed off ;)
So, now match number 6. Pete Dunne.. Ilja Dragunov. Two of European Wrestling’s finest battling it out. Gleefully rubbing my hands for this for weeks! But I’ll try not to mark out too much. I’ll just say it was everything you expected & much much more. So much more! I don’t think I took my eyes off the ring once. So yes if you don’t already subscribe to demand progress & watch this one.
Number 7 then the penultimate contest. Twelve months in the making, Eddie Dennis vs Mark Andrews. As an Attsck fan who do I cheer for? Do I side with the personal fave & cheer my boy Mark? Or do I switch & listen to my head which says Eddie is right? Answer? I sit back & watch a glorious TLC match. With unbreakable tables.. Oh oh oh boy!!! I’ve waited for too long to see 2 of my favourite wrestlers kick the poo out of each other in front of an Arena crowd!
Main event then. We see defending champ Walter facing UK’s own Tyler Bate. The big chopping Austrian taking on the Big Strong Boi. A highly anticipated main with some very nice hard hitting spots. Keep a watchful eye on demand for Tyler & his refusal to go down. It’s the classic ‘it’s not the size of the dog in the fight’ line. A great way to end a fantastic day of professional wrestling.
So there we have it. We came to Wembley. We laughed. We cried. We lost phones & still made it home. Would we do it all again? In a heartbeat.
I’ll blog a poem later guys as it’s National Poetry Day. Keep the feedback coming!
Jx

Styling the "Alma's Not Normal" Coat + Style With a Smile Link Up
I’ve found some absolute gems on Vinted and eBay over the years, but this coat is one of, if not, THE best! Now, I have a bit of an addiction to colourful faux fur, but this coat is really special. Fans of the BBC comedy Alma’s Not Normal would say it’s iconic. Where to get hold of an “Alma coat” is frequently the subject of The Facebook fan group. So I feel incredibly lucky to have found one on…

Denim Jumpsuit + Style With a Smile Link Up
Marks and Spencer have some great pieces in their A/W range; I’ve bought the palazzo style jeans (which are fabulous), and I’ve got my eye on that Ganni dupe leopard print top too. It’s currently sold out online but the website is showing one still in stock in a store not too far away. Well, I can drive again now so there’s no stopping me! During the end of summer sale I saw this denim jumpsuit…

Jenerique Angel Sleeve Dress + Style With a Smile Link Up
Pretty dresses in lightweight fabrics are my favourite pieces to take on holiday (along with a couple of co-ords). This gorgeous Jenerique angel sleeve dress arrived just in time. It took up hardly any space in my case and didn’t crease too badly. I probably should have ironed it, but who wants to do that in hot weather? Not me! The twist front detail on the front of the dress is very flattering…

Festival Finery - July's Style Not Age Challenge
Festival season is in full swing, which gave me the idea for this month’s Style Not Age theme of “Festival Finery”. I wore this exact outfit to our town’s annual festival in June which Isobel’s band opened. It wasn’t a particularly summery evening, so the stretch denim fabric was ideal for keeping me warm later on. When I found this boilersuit in a charity shop I wasn’t sure if it would fit or…

Neon Orange Trouser Suit + Style With a Smile Link Up
It’s been a while since I last wore an orange outfit so I had to put that right! I previously wore this suit with a darker print blouse and a navy bag. That was in December, but this is a more summery way to wear it. This neon orange trouser suit will never blend into the background so I’ve embraced the boldness and added yellow for a double zesty hit! I love this bag but unfortunately the metal…

Powder Blue and Green + Style With a Smile Link Up
You may remember me mentioning my favourite shop in Funchal, Madeira, where I buy several pieces each visit. Well, one of the brands they stock is Elsa. M by May. Over the last few years I’ve bought quite a few tops by this label, including the pink frill sleeve top, the black version (yes I do wear black sometimes!), and a similar one in green. I thought it must be a brand that’s only available…
