1997: women with soul and vision
Bit of a grab-bag in this set. Coming up: Nuyorican Soul, Veruca Salt, Beth Orton, and Alisha's Attic.
"I wanna be the only one" - Eternal and Bebe Winans
Esteemed chart commentator James Masterton wrote,
Every once in a while there comes along a record that cheers and inspires. One which achieves the ultimate for any pop record and makes the world seem brighter, the sky clearer and which motivates you to set the CD on repeat so you can hear the whole thing all over again. The latest Number One single in the UK is just such a record. For the second single from the Before The Rain album, Eternal team up with American gospel legend Bebe Winans for one of the most heartwarming duets you are likely to hear all year. Combining the best elements of pop and gospel in one wonderful package, the single is perfect summer radio material with a soaring chorus that defies you to dislike it. A masterpiece of production and arrangement, just listen to the way it changes key twice in the last minute as the mood of the chorus spirals ever higher and higher. From the moment it was released the single flew out of the shops and now easily gives Eternal their first ever Number One single, three and a half years since their chart debut with Stay. Easily the best pop record of the year so far, at least until next week.
Have the gospel version.

"Runaway" - Nuyorican Soul ft India
ob Loleatta Holloway, tick. She was the vocalist on Salsoul Orchestra's original song in 1977, given new life by "Little" Louie Vega and Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez. Absolutely majestic orchestration, effortlessly combining house and salsa and scat jazz. Inspired Janet Jackson to write and record "Together again".
More! DJ Magazine goes behind the scenes with masters at work.
youtube
"Volcano girls" - Veruca Salt
The group's second album Eight Arms to Hold You disappointed some fans, who wanted more grunge than the alternative pop on offer. Our lead single showcased the group's new and different approach: one could describe them as the Spice Girls with guitars, except Kenickie had bagsied that, and Shampoo were bubblegum-with-attitude.
Barely marketed and sold about 600 copies over here, into the top 40 at number 137 and straight out again. Decent hit in the States, where the group toured with Bush.
More: An "oral history" of "Volcano girls", from Veruca Salt's reunion in 2014.
youtube
"She cries your name" - Beth Orton
Opens with a wailing and distinctive guitar line, then a divine voice sing-speaks a tale of domestic woe. Beth straddled the line between electronica - she'd dated William Orbit, produced by Andy Weatherall - and a folk-roots sound influenced by Carole King and Carly Simon. In later years, the folk-roots sound would win; this song remains a touchpoint for the late 90s and no other era.
More: Live review from 1997.
youtube
"Indestructible" - Alisha's Attic
Karen and Shelley Poole, making music for the art. A full-on art package: remember the little cartoon imp from the single cover, and every single single from the album?
Tumblr media
"Indestructible" is an oasis of calm, peace, inner strength. We are indestructible, there's nothing to stop us. A world of wild romantic imagination, mystic adventures this way; guess some people hadn't picked up a book (as opposed to a Man City matchday programme) since leaving primary school.
A couple of long watches: The Hidden Treasures of Alisha's Attic, and a collection of interviews.

Dudhsagar Spice Plantation Tour Package in Goa: Discover Nature and Flavors
The great beaches, nightlife, and laid-back coastal feel make Goa the best destination ever. But little do most people know that behind the shining coastline is a whole new world of nature and rich cultural heritage. Feel the great heights of visiting the Dudhsagar spiceplantation tour package in goa Waterfalls with the Dudhsagar Spice Plantation Tour Package as you indulge in exploring the fragrant spice plantations in Goa.
1. Dudhsagar Waterfalls: Nature's Miracle Work of Art
making it one of India's tallest waterfalls. The name for this waterfall translates to "Sea of Milk," quite an apt description of the frothy white water flowing down these rocky cliffs into the pools below.
A Scenic Trek: The Dudhsagar Waterfalls are usually reached through scenic jeep safari tours through the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. The ride in itself is thrilling-a journey through dense forests, crossing streams and direct experience with the raw beauty of Goa's hinterland. The more adventurous can even opt for treks that give greater closeness to nature and even a possibility of sighting local wild animals.
The trip to Dudhsagar fall always offers the chance for refreshing dips at natural pools formed along the bottom of the falls when a visitor reaches the bottom of the fall. It's an experience with many sounds of nature and towering cliffs around when one swims in Dudhsagar, the perfect way to cool down after the journey.
Instagram-worthy views, it sits in a beautiful green lawn with wild life in the background, so click it however you want to. You will either like the grandeur of the falls, or you would love the serenity of the surrounding landscape, Dudhsagar indeed is photographer heaven.
2. Spice Plantations: A Journey Through Goa's Fragrant Gardens
The visit is then carried ahead at a relaxed note with another experience just as intriguing – a visit to one of the spice plantations Goa is famous for. A visit to these spice plantations will give an idea about the agricultural history of this region and Indian cuisine cannot be visualized without spices in it.
Aromatic Tour Walk through the thousands of lush greencolour gardens of an aromatic spice plantation, with many spices: black pepper, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, to name a few. Guides with their pertinant knowledge present interesting information on each spice: how they grow, are used in the kitchen or even medicines. Crunch and fresh spicy fragrance fill in your senses as you take it all in.
Hands-on experience: Several plantations allow seeing where spices come from, how they are grown and harvested, and how they are processed. Sometimes, you get a chance to plant a sapling or even try some harvesting. This is a great way of taking your knowledge of which everyday ingredient comes from where and transport it onto a much deeper level.
The spice plantation tour also includes a traditional Goan meal prepared from organic ingredients and spices grown at the plantation. For main course, it's a banana-leaf meal of fish curry, chicken xacuti, vegetable stew with rice, spicy pickles, and chutneys. It is a fair approximation of Goan flavors for many and the high point of culinary delights during tours.
3. Adventure with a Soaking in Culture As much as this experience can speak, the Dudhsagar Tour Package is nothing short of best from Goa beyond its beaches. Here's why:
A Balanced Itinerary: It is an amazing fun and relaxation trip planned with great balancing, where one starts the day by visiting the Dudhsagar waterfalls and then spends some relaxing and informative stroll through a spice plantation.
Although the spice plantation tour is agricultural, it runs parallel to a rich gastronomical heritage in Goa. An added bonus that comes with learning the ways of traditional farming practices is through exploration into the role spices plays in Goan as well as Indian cuisine through savoring an authentic Goan meal. This tour ensures cultural immersion is the add-on.
Perfect for Nature Lovers: If you are a nature lover, this tour brings the best of both worlds-a visually scintillating Dudhsagar Waterfalls and tranquil verdant surroundings of spice plantations. It is a time to connect with nature and respect biodiversity where Goa can take you.
4. How to Have a Memorable Time
To totally enjoy your Dudhsagar Spice Plantation Tour, remind yourself of the following tips:
Wear Comfortable Clothing: The road to the waterfall is bumpy and involves a lot of walking during the plantation tour. So, you must be dressed in convenient shoes and clothes that might get dirty during outdoor activities.
Carry Your Camera: Photography in the waterfall and the spice plantation is full so, do not forget your camera or smartphone.
Pack Swimsuit: If you feel like splashing out in the Dudhsagar pools, a swimming costume and towel shall be provided.
Hydrate: Given the walk and Goan weather, lots of water needs to be carried so that it can be used throughout the day.
The Dudhsagar Spice Plantation Tour Package in Goa gives an unbeatable mix of natural beauty, adventure, and cultural experience. This is a journey that takes tourists from roaring Dudhsagar Waterfalls to the aromatic spice gardens with an unforgettable experience that will unveil the rich heritage of Goa along with its diversified landscapes. Goecha La Trek is a fascinating trip on the rocky terrains of the Eastern Himalayas with a glimpse of Kanchenjunga – the third highest mountain of the world. An arduous hike that also gets you into the interiors of virgin nature while encapsulating all that is positive about the wild in the Indian Himalayas. That is why, the hiking places in India is on par with the best trekking destinations in the world and Goecha La is one of the best trekking place in India with awe-inspiring view of mountains and walking on rough terrains.
The Journey Begins The Goecha La trek normally begins at Yuksom an ancient city in West Sikkim which is also known as Gangtok I and is the beginning trek point for this trek. Legend has it that the town was established in ancient by three Tibetan monks, it laid out the foundation of Buddhism in Sikkim. From Yuksom, it passes through dense forest area, cross some very primitive suspension bridges across the bubbling river flows, climb over steep ridges and offer one of the most exciting and beautiful treks per cm of elevation.
The Trail The Kanchenjunga base camp trek takes place in the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area which has been listed as a world heritage site because of its support of flora and faunas. It has beautiful trees of rhododendron along with magnolias and orchids and all these trees bloom in full effectively in spring. This trek is also an excellent opportunity to meet such peculiar animals as red panda and black bear of the Himalayas which gives additional emotion to a travel.
High Altitude Campsites Trekking to Goecha La is filled with camps which are unique in their views and even atmosphere. Tshoka – a small Tibetan settlement – is nice with wooden houses; it can be safely called a homely stop. Dzongri located at a comparatively higher level is the most favoured place for trekkers to acclimatize themselves. Here you get a chance to watch the 360-degree horons of the Himalayan Range during sunrise which remains etched in the memory of each trekker.
The Final Ascent And the final ever steep up to Goecha La is the most rewarding part and at the same time it is very tough. The trail passes through Samiti Lake a calm glacial lake surrounded by mountains which reflect on the water body. When approaching the pass the area usually experiences thinner air and difficult terrains as well as sometimes cold and snowy conditions. But at least this is rewarded by the sight of the first rays of the sun on Kanchenjunga which is magical.
Cultural Immersion In addition to the mode Physical activity, the Goecha La trek is value experience because of the chances of cultural interaction. For me, the most rewarding experience is meeting the warm and hospitable people of Sikkim which one does not Forget soon after the trekking. The trail takes one through different villages that are still pristine and this gives an insight to the indigenous tribal life and its religion,
Buddhism.Preparing for the Trek The Goecha La trek is very strenuous and requires the hiker to be in perfect health, follow the correct acclimatization procedure and pack appropriately because the weather up there changes with increased altitude. If you are a visitor a local tour guide can much more familiarize you with such areas and give details and outlaws of stories associated with such trails.
So, dear friends, Goecha la is not a trek only it’s one’s communion with nature and soul to the most beautiful Himalayas. It really tries your muscles and brain and provides the soul with … well, this is a genuine wish list event that is on any adventurous person’s wish list!
