[”Black male critics were much harsher in their assessments of the novel. From the beginning of her career, Hurston was severely criticized for not writing fiction in the protest tradition. Sterling Brown said in 1936 of her earlier book Mules and Men that it was not bitter enough, that it did not depict the harsher side of black life in the south, that Hurston made black southern life appear easygoing and carefree. Alain Locke, dean of black scholars and critics during the Harlem Renaissance, wrote in his yearly review of the literature for Opportunity magazine that Hurston’s Their Eyes was simply out of step with the more serious trends of the times. When, he asks, will Hurston stop creating “these pseudo-primitives whom the reading public still loves to laugh with, weep over, and envy” and “come to grips with the motive fiction and social document fiction?” The most damaging critique of all came from the most well known and influential black writer of the day, Richard Wright. Writing for the leftist magazine New Masses, Wright excoriated Their Eyes as a novel that did for literature what the minstrel shows did for theater, that is, make white folks laugh. The novel, he said, “carries no theme, no message, no thought,” but exploited those “quaint” aspects of Negro life that satisfied the taste of a white audience. By the end of the forties, a decade dominated by Wright and by the stormy fiction of social realism, the quieter voice of a woman searching for self-realization could not, or would not, be heard.

The reaction of women all across the country who found themselves so powerfully represented in a literary text were often direct and personal. Janie and Tea Cake were talked about as though they were people the readers know intimately. Sherley Anne Williams remembers going down to a conference in Los Angeles in 1969 where the main speaker, Toni Cade Bambara, asked the women in the audience, “Are the sisters here ready for Tea Cake?” And Williams, remembering that even Tea Cake had his flaws, responded, “Are the Tea Cakes of the world ready for us?” Williams taught Their Eyes for the first time at Cal State Fresno, in a migrant farming area where the student, like the characters in Their Eyes, were used to making their living from the land. “For the first time,” Williams says, “they saw themselves in these characters and they saw their lives portrayed with joy.”

Despite the fact that the session was scheduled on a Sunday morning, the last session of the entire convention, the room was packed and the audience unusually attentive. In his comments at the end of the session, Stepto raised the issue that has become one of the most highly controversial and hotly contested aspects of the novel: whether or not Janie is able to achieve her voice in Their Eyes. What concerned Stepto was the courtroom scene in which Janie is called on not only to preserve her own life and liberty but also to make the jury, as well as all of us who hear her tale, understand the meaning of her life with Tea Cake. Stepto found Janie curiously silent in this scene, with Hurston telling the story in omniscient third person so that we do not hear Janie speak— at least not in her own first-person voice. Stepto was quite convinced (and convincing) that the frame story in which Janie spoke to Pheoby creates only the illusion that Janie has found her voice, that Hurston’s insistence on telling Janie’s story in the third person undercuts her power as a speaker. While the rest of us in the room struggled to find our voices, Alice Walker rose and claimed hers, insisting passionately that women did not have to speak when men thought they should, that they would choose when and where they wish to speak because while many women had found their own voices, they also knew when it was better not to use it. What was most remarkable about the energetic and at times heated discussion that followed Stepto’s and Walker’s remarks was the assumption of everyone in that room that Their Eyes was a shared text, that a novel that just ten years earlier was unknown and unavailable had entered into critical acceptance as perhaps the most widely known and the most privileged text in the African-American literary canon.

The MLA session was important for another reason. Walker’s defense of Janie’s choice (actually Hurston’s choice) to be silent in the crucial places in the novel turned out to be the earliest feminist reading of voice in Their Eyes, a reading that was later supported by many other Hurston scholars. In a recent essay on Their Eyes, and the question of voice, Michael Awkward argues that Janie’s voice at the end of the novel is a communal one, that when she tells Pheoby to tell her story (”You can tell ‘em what Ah say if you wants to. Dat’s just de same as me ‘cause mah tongue is in mah friend’s mout”) she is choosing a collective rather than an individual voice, demonstrating her closeness to the collective spirit of the African-American oral tradition. Thad Davis agrees with this reading of voice, adding that while Janie is the teller of the tale, Pheoby is the bearer of the tale. Davis says that Janie’s experimental life may not allow her to effect changes beyond what she causes in Pheoby’s life; but Pheoby, standing within the traditional role of women, is the one best suited to take the message back to the community.”]

Turns Out I’m The Mom T shirt

I remember the first Xmas after my father remarried and I had step-siblings. My step-sister and I got the exact same type of items, to the exact same number, but I got the dollar store knocks offs, while she got the high end, name-brand versions. Getting the cardboard “Flair fashion doll house” when your step-sister gets Mattel’s Barbie Dreamhouse is a pretty obvious difference. It was followed by a fight between my father and step-mother, where I found out 1. my father didn’t buy a single present for me and 2. My step-mother used the money she “saved�� on my gifts that my father gave her for Turns Out I’m The Mom T shirt on her own kids because “it wasn’t like Lara is smart enough to know the difference” (Yet, I was smart enough to not comment on the obvious difference). I was 9. But hey at least we got to go to Disney World that day when it was closed to the public, which was something, even if I had to listen to my step-mother bragging the whole day how we owed it all to her being employed there. I remember the XMas when I was about 6 with my mother’s family at their farmhouse. Decorating the Xmas tree we had cut from the backyard on Xmas eve, tons of cookies and dessert breads, waking up to presents under the tree. My grandmother giving me a snowsuit so I could build my first snowman. My great-grandfather letting me play on his walker, and his Dalmatian Barney following me all over the house. I broke a tooth on the coffee table and thought it was funny.

The meadow was very deceptive. It was actually soft mud when moist. It was at a lower elevation and would catch a lot of the runoff around it. But you couldn’t tell that from the road. It looks like hard earth with weeds, wildflowers, and some oak trees. So in the winter you couldn’t even walk on it. On the far side of the Turns Out I’m The Mom T shirt was stored a fishing boat on a trailer that belonged to my neighbor’s son. There was no pavement to get to the boat. But most of the time that was not a problem. The boat’s owner would just haul it in and out with his pickup truck. One Sunday morning in March I walked down my driveway to the mailbox to get the morning paper, as I usually did. March is our wettest month, and the meadow was muddy as usual. When walking back, I noticed there was an 1960’s era pickup truck parked on the other side of the meadow next to the boat. The pickup was buried past it’s axles in mud. I went over to examine it. It was unlocked. So I went through the glove box and found the registration. It belonged to a guy in town. I found him in the white pages and called him up. I asked him why his pickup truck was buried in my front yard. He told me that it was no longer his. He had sold it to some young man 3 months earlier. He didn’t have the buyer’s details anymore. So he couldn’t help me.

Doobie Brothers. Well, I got lost driving them to a hotel in Fresno. They played a show at Fresno State and when they flew in they wanted to freshen up before the show. There was a Holiday Inn near the campus but they booked the Hilton or some other more upscale hotel to take their showers and it was across town. I had never been to Fresno and made it to the hotel to pick them up in a van while my friend followed in another van. We both took half the band and I was the lead driver. We got lost and I stopped at a [[Turns Out I’m The Mom T shirt]] shop to ask for directions. Michale McDonald was not too happy. Also, their next show was to be in Santa Barbara and they asked how the tickets were selling. I reminded them that the last time they played S.B., they came on stage and said “we are so tired from touring”. I suggested that they might not want to make that comment again as the tickets to the show were very high priced and the people were disappointed to have the band come out and immediately say that they were tired.

Santa Claus was inspired and created by St. Nicholas; – this Christmas tradition has Christian roots, rather than pagan ones. Born in southern Turkey around 280, he was a bishop in the early Christian church and suffered persecution and imprisonment for his faith. Legend has it that the gold landed in a sock drying by the fire, so children started hanging stockings by their fires in hopes St. Nicholas would toss gifts into them. As time went on, each European culture adapted versions of St. Nicholas. In Swiss and German cultures, Christkind or Kris Kringle (Christ child) accompanied St. Nicholas to deliver presents to well-behaved children. Jultomten was a happy elf delivering gifts via a Turns Out I’m The Mom T shirt drawn by goats in Sweden. Then there was Father Christmas in England and Pere Noel in France. In the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Lorraine, France, and parts of Germany, he was known as Sinter Klaas. (Klaas, for the record, is a shortened version of the name Nicholas). This is where the Americanized Santa Claus comes from.

1. Star Trek, Star Wars, or Doctor Who, and why?

I’m going to say Star Wars, first because it’s the one I’ve seen the most of (though I do hope to watch more Star Trek when I can), and second of all because the space opera or space fantasy genre is one that I enjoy thinking about/exploring. My version of the Golden Age has many influences, but it wouldn’t exist exactly as it does without Star Wars.

2. Favorite fantasy book?

Why did you put such a hard question in here? It’s Howl’s Moving Castle, though.

3. What’s your favorite monster or cryptid and why? Least favorite?

Black-eyed children consistently reduce me to fear-tears, so I’m going to call them my favorite. I think the Fresno walkers are my least favorite, even though they also scare the bejeebers out of me. They’re just wishbones! Why are they so terrifying?

4. Who was the rudest person you ever encountered at work?

So, at my work we have a giant slide, and people have to be over a certain height to use it safely. This man came in with his family, which happened to include 2 or 3 children that were too short for the slide. He got very pissed off when I measured them, asking me over and over again why he “spent all this money” to come here when his kids “couldn’t do anything.” (First of all, the safety policy isn’t going to change just because you’re annoyed, dude, so there’s no point staying here and getting in everyone else’s way. Second of all, your kids can do almost everything else here? There are plenty of exhibits? There are live demonstrations? Third of all, admission is more than $5 and less than $10. I understand that this can be significant, but I can’t believe that you spent it ONLY so your kids could go down a slide for half an hour!)

5. Favorite drink?

Really, really good hot chocolate.

6. What are your favorite pajamas/clothes to wear to bed (if any)?

Cotton capri-length pants, pale blue and white striped, and a navy blue tank top that says “Sleepy Head” on it.

7. Least favorite texture and why?

DRYWALL. Accidentally scratching raw, unpainted drywall with my fingernails is THE WORST. Visceral revulsion. Unfortunately, at my job I have to handle drywall every now and then...and I handle it very carefully.

8.  Who’s your favorite Gotham Rogue out of Batman’s villains and why?

I answer this going from B:TAS and other DCAU stuff. Mark Hamil’s Joker is an excellent balance between depravity and humor, so I enjoy him on that level; on the other hand, Mr. Freeze and Baby Doll both hit me hard with the raw deals they got.

9. What was your first/favorite stuffed animal or toy growing up as a kid?

I had this deep yellow...thing, with long ears and a spherical nose, and a body shaped mostly like a standard teddy bear body, but it wasn’t a bear, and it wasn’t a rabbit, just a very ambiguous creature overall. 

10. If money, time, and skill were of no issue, who would you cosplay as at San Diego ComiCon and why?

Christopher Carrion from Abarat, because a first-book accurate costume of that guy would be HELLA impressive, everyone would ask about it, I could talk about the Abarat series, people would be intruiged and read it, the fandom would grow, more people would clamor for Clive Barker to write the next book, and maybe in five years or so we’d have another rumor of a release date.

11. What movie are you most looking forward to seeing in the next 12 months and why?

The Shape of Water because I like that kind of story so much I asked for something very similar on the RotG kinkmeme, which is why @marypsue wrote Dreamland.

The 'Bone Collector' teaches NBA MVP new moves

Rafer Alston’s job is to watch basketball. In Houston, where he spent three-and-a-half seasons as a player, he scouts local games on behalf of the Minnesota Timberwolves. He pays special attention to point guards, some of whom are his old foes, now pacing the league in extraordinary ways. James Harden, Stephen Curry, Damian Lillard, Chris Paul—the list goes on. For Alston, the current so-called golden age of point guard play is something of a callback. The moves of today have a familiarity to them.

There is the way Curry glides beyond the arc, slicing and dribbling at high speeds, pitter patter, until he springs himself open for a three. There’s the probing, fearless work of Kemba Walker, a New Yorker like Alston, who treats every trip down court with mano a mano desperation. On a recent night, Kyrie Irving confused the defense so deeply in transition that by the time his pass traveled through his own legs—backwards—and into the hands of his teammate, the guy was open by 20 feet. Have we covered Paul or Lillard yet? Or how about Ben Simmons, who at 6’10” casually dropped in a youthful, slightly haphazard behind-the-back one-hopper two weeks ago. And then there is Harden, who performed the most notorious move in recent memory last year when he crossed over Wes Johnson, poured him out onto the floor, took a long look at him and then popped a three. All that was missing, as far Alston might be concerned, was Harden bouncing the ball off of Johnson’s dome before shooting.

“They got it from somewhere,” Alston says of these astonishing guards. “That’s the funny thing about basketball. They didn’t start doing some of the moves and passes that they do. CP, Steph, Lillard, they didn’t do it on their own. They got it from somewhere. You ask them, ‘Who’d you watch?’ It might have been a streetball guy.”

Two decades ago, Alston was the streetball guy. In 1998, he brought his audacious, borderline unsportsmanlike style of streetball to mainstream audiences as the dazzling Skip 2 My Lou on the inaugural AND1 Mixtape. He would pave the way for 10 such videos. The first three centered around individual streetball players such as Alston, Main Event, Hot Sauce, and AO. The final seven tapes tracked a team of AND1 streetball stars, such as The Professor and the late Escalade, as they traveled the nation, facing local competition in various cities. In many ways, Alston was a pioneer of the goosed-up highlight reel; the AND1 Mixtape arrived some six years before YouTube and a dozen years before Instagram. Today, the basketball world is oversaturated with such clips, but back then, there was only one set that mattered.

“We used to watch it all the time before we’d go play, as inspiration,” says Phoenix Suns veteran Jamal Crawford, now a sort of ball-handling sage at age 38. “We’d take the VHS everywhere with us.” When Crawford saw Alston on the tape as a teen, he was “mesmerized,” he says. “The way he passed the ball, the way he handled the ball, the way he just displayed that kid of flair.” Crawford was such an admirer of Alston that he initially enrolled at Fresno State to follow in his footsteps. “The creativity of it, the art of it, you didn’t see guys like that in the NBA,” Crawford adds. “It just brought a whole different layer and viewpoint of how you could play the game.”

All these years later, Alston’s approach—and that of his fellow AND1 streetball players—has permeated the NBA. “Every pass, every fancy play, the derivative is streetball,” says Larry Williams, better known as the Bone Collector, who joined the AND1 live tour (a follow-up to the mixtape tour) in 2011. Williams has worked on handles with a number of NBA players, including Harden. “Jamal Crawford, for instance, Lou Williams—look at their entire game,” Williams says “What kind of offensive structure do they have? Is that a [conventional] pro game? Crawford isn’t a point guard or a 2-guard, he’s everything. That’s why streetball is important for the NBA, and I’m happy James [Harden] and guys like that are bringing light to that.”

On any given night, you’re liable to catch some mixtape-worthy moments in the NBA. Even on the brightest stages—like, say, Game 7 of the NBA Finals—a quick crossover and a springy stepback might decide an entire season. That’s now light work for a player like Irving. “He’s really got it down pat,” says Irving’s teammate, Jayson Tatum, of such wicked moves. “For him to perfect it in the biggest moments—it’s special.”

Indeed, Irving, Harden, Curry and the rest have taken the snazzy elements of the mixtapes they grew up watching and elevated them, honored them, pulled them apart and reassembled them. For trailblazers like Alston, it wasn’t easy to prove that a guard could win and look so good doing it. Today, though, substance and style are a packaged deal in NBA backcourts, and the AND1 mixtapes are owed a debt of gratitude.

It just brought a whole different layer and viewpoint of how you could play the game—Jamal Crawford on the legacy of AND1.

“AND1 played a big part in handling the ball. Period. For everybody, no matter your size,” says Terry Rozier, the Celtics‘ backup to Irving and an electric player in his own right. Rozier followed the AND1 Mixtape Tour as a kid and often tried his luck with mixtape moves. “It had a big impact on the stuff we see in peoples’ games today—it’s more natural now,” he continues. “It’s not so much of guys being stiff when they’re playing [anymore]—everybody’s more loose. I wouldn’t say it’s mainly because of AND1, but I feel like that played a big part in it.”

To be sure, there are any number of reasons that the NBA game looks like it does today. Guys have been crossing up defenders and flipping the ball behind their back for decades—you can trace great ball-handling from Bob Cousy to Pete Maravich to Magic Johnson, with countless practitioners in between. Jason Williams, aka White Chocolate, recalls owning just one jersey as a kid: Jason Kidd’s Mavericks No. 5. During a broadcast last week on TNT, Isiah Thomas recalled that when he was a veteran, a young Tim Hardaway challenged him “and used my move [the crossover] on me! That’s when I knew it was time to hang it up.” Later, as Hardaway’s career faded in the late ’90s, Allen Iverson took the torch and sprinted ahead.

Other factors have influenced the way the game has evolved, too. In the early 2000s, the palming and hand-checking rules were shrugged off, opening up the court. Everybody learning to shoot threes only widened it further. “I think it all played a role,” says Aaron “AO” Owens, a former AND1 star. “It all meets in the middle and goes down the same lane.” But, says, Waliyy Dixon, aka Main Event: “Let’s be real. Kyrie Irving, Isaiah Thomas, James Harden, a lot of guys—they had to watch the tapes.”

True—it seems most everybody in the NBA did.

“I watched it, and there were times where I tried to do some of the moves, of course,” Walker says. He never thought of AND1’s style as one that would mesh or thrive in the NBA. And yet, he adds, “I’m a small guy, so I had to use some of those moves to get where I wanted to go or get the shots off that I wanted to get off.”

Will Barton, the Nuggets swingman, can pinpoint the gestures he borrowed from the AND1 players on the tapes.  “A lot of crossovers I stole from them, a lot of moves I tried,” he says. “They definitely had a particular flair. Sometimes when I dribble, you’ll see me skip—I definitely got that from Skip 2 My Lou. Throwing passes while looking away, I definitely got that from him and Alimoe [the late Tyrone Evans]. Sick crossovers from Hot Sauce, definitely.”

Devin Booker, the Suns’ combo-guard, felt more of a connection with the bravado, the posture of AND1—what it represented. “It was definitely a culture of basketball; a whole different swag was invented from that,” Booker says. “We’d watch the moves and then go in the backyard and practice them—get a 3x shirt, put it on, headbands, they did it all, man.”

Tatum has similar fond memories. “[It] was really big, as a kid on the playground,” he says. “I tried putting the ball in my shirt, throwing it around, throwing it off their head—I used to try all that stuff.”

That AND1 could affect multiple generations of current NBA players—Crawford is Generation X; Tatum, coincidentally, was born in 1998, the same year that the first AND1 Mixtape dropped—is testimony to its brilliance. And to its impeccable timing.

The NBA was entering a transitional period in the summer of 1998. Michael Jordan had three-peated for the second time, defeating the Utah Jazz, the epitome of controlled, no-frills basketball,again. John Stockton was a kind of anti-mixtape point guard. Meanwhile, Allen Iverson, then in his second year with the Sixers, was upending that stiffer tradition, performing what Thomas Beller of the New Yorker recently described as “the apotheosis of street ball’s swagger at the NBA level.”

That offseason was a wild one: In June, Vince Carter (No. 5 pick) and Williams (No. 7) were drafted in the first round. Alston was selected with the No. 39 pick. In August, the first AND1 Mixtape, starring Alston, dropped. In January 1999, Jordan retired. All the while, the league was on strike. There would be no NBA basketball until February 1999 (and no MJ until 2001). A window opened for AND1. “The timing was perfect,” Alston says.

And that wasn’t just true in a basketball sense. Something was bubbling in American TV culture, too. Reality TV was exploding—think The Real World, Survivor and American Idol. AND1, which had established its own authentic version of basketball, was, on some level, tailor-made for reality television. The AND1 tour picked up in 2001, and the next year, ESPN built a show around it called Street Ball. (EA Sports also released an unaffiliated video game called NBA Street in 2001.)

Cameras would follow the AND1 team from city to city to film not just how they played, but how they interacted off the court. “We’d do some whacked out stuff, some stuff that they probably had to edit out,” Alston says. “But at least it was organic—this is who we are. Then with basketball, you had kids, mothers, grandmothers so fascinated. Each player had something unique he could do with the basketball.” (In 2003, Dave Chappelle mocked—or maybe honored—the show in a hilarious sketch.)

AO recalls the AND1 tour stopping at Wake Forest, where college-aged Chris Paul came to watch them play. Big men like Ed Davis and guards like Shabazz Napier and Monte Morris caught the tour, too. Morris, who’s now among the NBA’s leaders in assist to turnover ratio, credits his hesi dribble to the AND1 players. At a Cavaliers game in the mid-2000s, Main Event recalls LeBron James finding him in the crowd to dap him up. “He didn’t know me from sitting in the stands; he had to from watching the mixtapes,” he says. In 2012, Grayson Boucher, aka The Professor, connected with Curry, who asked him for a photo. Not long ago, in a Las Vegas casino, Alston came across a fan in Lillard. “He was like, ‘Man, what’s up, OG Skip?’ I know he’s not calling me an OG because I averaged 20 points per game in the NBA, you know what I’m saying? He’s like, ‘This dude was a streetball dude, man—AND1 Mixtape!'”

As much as players respected the AND1 Mixtapes—from the personalities to the style of play—many coaches felt differently. “I came up when coaches wouldn’t allow it or they call it junk ball or they’re like, ‘Oh, that street stuff is no good,'” Alston says. “We grew up playing the game in the playgrounds and the gym, we come from playing the game with so much flair and passion for the game. I think the coaches had a hard time trying to blend the two, trying to incorporate the fundamentals and make sure these young men keep their God-given talents, some of the good things that they do.”

Alston’s first coach when he entered the league in ’98 was George Karl. “[Alston] had that game, he had that street game, or…” Karl says, before pausing for a beat. “He definitely had some shit, man. It was good.”

Still, most nights early in his career, Alston was stuck behind Sam Cassell, a more established, balanced point guard. Alston and Karl developed a “love-hate relationship,” in the coach’s words. Karl had just wrapped up a six-plus-year tenure in Seattle, where his SuperSonics had reached the Finals behind the all-around excellence of point guard Gary Payton. Alston wasn’t Payton in sensibility or style, despite both having been molded by the rigors of the playground. (Alston in Queens, New York; Payton in Oakland, California.)

“He played with the ball a lot,” Karl says. “We had a little problem there, but I think I realized Rafer was young, youthful, maybe too playground-ish. The game has maybe gone to the playground a little more than back then. There were more set plays then—the point guard was more to be a mental mind on the court for the coach rather than a talented player as today.”

In that version of the NBA, a number of AND1 players struggled to break through. “When I was coming up, it was so political—if you were a streetball player, you weren’t meant for the league,” says Boucher, who joined the AND1 tour in 2003. Boucher played a stint in the Continental Basketball Association—the unofficial predecessor to the G League—where, he recalls, “They’d say, ‘Well, he’s more of a novelty, he’s streetball.’”

Part of the problem was a misunderstanding about what AND1 players really could do and what they were already doing. “People would say it’s some Globetrotter shit, but it wasn’t,” says Owens. “In a 40-minute AND1 game, you might only see five minutes of shit (on the mixtape) because of TV, cutting and clipping.” Most of the game, Owens says, was something more similar to NBA ball.

Owens was a DII All-American at Henderson State and would later play in the then-D-League, where he won a championship. At times, he felt as though he were being judged for his streetball background. At one NBA tryout, he recalls the team’s coach said, “What’s a streetball player doing here?” But for Owens, the transition from the street game to the pro game was simple.

“There wasn’t the balance for me—if I was playing in an AND1 game, it’s one thing; a D-League game is real basketball. But if I get an outlet and my instinct is to throw it through his legs, I’m gonna fuckin’ do it. The only way to get past him without a turnover might be through his legs,” he says. “I didn’t have to calm myself down like, Don’t do no dumb shit like throw it off the side of the backboard. It was basketball.”

That’s how Jason Williams looked at it, too. Williams, who arrived to the NBA as a highly touted point guard prospect, felt comfortable leaning on some flashy street elements. He didn’t view his style of play as a novelty—not even his signature behind-the-back elbow pass. “Sometimes throwing it behind my back was easier than a regular chest pass,” he says. “I didn’t look at it at a street level; it was basketball to me. I watched [the AND1 mixtapes] growing up and loved it, but I didn’t pattern my game after any of that. I was just doing my own thing.”

Now eight years retired, Williams is amazed by how much the league has changed. “When I was playing, guys were still throwing the ball into the post and trying to get double-teams that way,” he says. “Now that’s out the window.” He prioritized feeding the big stars around him: Chris Webber and Vlade Divac, then Pau Gasol, then Dwight Howard. And Shaquille O’Neal, too. “If Shaq don’t get the ball two or three times downcourt, he looks at you and says, ‘I need the ball,'” Williams says. “It’s just different. My job was to get scorers the ball. Now their job is to score and get guys involved.”

Sunday will mark 20 years since Alston debuted in the NBA. The league—perhaps especially at point guard—has changed tremendously since then, while the star power of certain streetballers has faded even in Alston’s own home. Alston’s son, a 10-year-old guard who will undoubtedly arrive in your Instagram feed before long, “doesn’t realize how good his dad is,” Alston says. “To him, I’m just dad. I’m not Skip 2 My Lou, the streetball legend, the guy who played 11 years in the NBA. Other kids gotta tell my son, ‘You know how good your dad was?'”

Owens never made an NBA roster and now coaches high school basketball in Philadelphia. His ninth and 10th grade players, much like Alston’s son, don’t fawn over his streetball fame like a young Jamal Crawford or Terry Rozier once did. “They’re like, ‘I seen you on YouTube,” Owens says, flatly, “but not necessarily like, ‘Yo, that’s AO!”

Vince Carter, who is as much a mentor to young players as he is a rotation player in Atlanta, has sensed a change in the way young players relate to the tapes. “I think most younger people today just watch YouTube or watch highlights on social media just because of the convenience and access,” Carter says. “And while they’ve heard of AND1, I don’t know that it has the same impact.”

Take Booker, for instance. The 22-year-old Suns guard was born only two years before the first mixtape dropped. He may have tried out the moves he saw, but his connection with the AND1 tour only runs so deep. When asked about his favorite mixtape ballers, Booker says, “I know Hot Sauce put the ball in the shirt, and who was the white guy with the handles?”

Booker can’t quite come up with the name of The Professor, the type of player who meant so much to his older teammate, Crawford, back in the day. One reason, Crawford suggests, is that mixtape culture today is so omnipresent. “There’s so much now to digest on Instagram,” he says. “It wasn’t like that before.”

The mixtape has become something new, and in a way, it is stronger than ever. “Now a kid can get a scholarship off a Ball Is Life mixtape,” The Professor says. Or even climb up NBA draft boards. Zion Williamson, for instance, became famous long before he arrived at Duke—before his games aired nationally—and he’s likely to go No. 1 in this year’s draft. “Now the influencer hooper is the new streetballer,” The Professor says.

But the old streetballers aren’t going anywhere. The Professor runs his own YouTube channel—Professor Live—where he airs his familiar skillset to nearly 3.5 million followers. The Bone Collector has nearly 1 million followers on Instagram, where he posts photos with Harden and tapes of poor kids falling all over themselves while defending him. Hot Sauce made waves last year for doing the same in Atlanta as a Hawks halftime performer. And Alston is still as connected as can be to the game.

Plus, as he points out, those original tapes are never far away.

“The footage is still around,” he says. “It might be some grainy footage—you gotta convert the VHS to DVD, then convert it on the computer. But the footage is still around.”

2011 NFL Pre-Draft Team Capsules

AFC SOUTH TEAM DRAFT NEEDS

1) INDIANAPOLIS COLTS: Even with "Superman" at QB, the Colts were overachievers last season due to injuries, finishing at 10-6 and losing a tough one to the Jets in the 1st round of the NFL playoffs. When looking at this franchise, they are all about outscoring their opponent. They showed that they can "plug and play" at WR with the talent they have shown the last few years with the emergence of Garcon, White and Collie. However, the Colts universe still revolves around Manning and you don't keep your Ferrari parked in the road do you? No you protect it and that is what the Colts will do early in this draft. http://www.rapidfatburns.com They still were near the top of the league with only 17 sacks allowed on Manning in 2010 but much of their issues on the OL were disguised by Manning's uncanny ability to read defenses and get the ball out of his hands quickly. Look for the Colts to address the line at pick 22 in what is amounting to a pretty deep draft in the trenches. Carimi or Castonzo would be great but are not expected to be there for their pick. I think Tyron Smith from USC may be a good fit here for them as he is big at 6'5and still has room to grow his frame at 290. Rackley from Lehigh would also be a solid choice here too if available. The rest of the draft should concentrate on the defensive side of the ball. They are plenty deep at WR, Clark isn't getting younger at TE but this draft is not good if you need a TE so they'll pass here. RB could be an option in rounds 3-4 as Brown is bordering on a bust depending on the 2011 season and Addai, while showing great signs of life last year, just can't be counted on for production and staying healthy. With Sanders now gone in the back end, the Colts need to shore up their secondary. I like them going CB, maybe even in the first and crossing their fingers that the talent at OL holds up until their 2nd pick. They can also always use help at the DL position to free up Freeney so that is an option as well.

2) HOUSTON TEXANS: Everyone's favorite pre-season pick to surprise did so again, only on the downside as usual. They started out the season strong but lost some close ones along the way to again finish a disappointing season at 6-10. Kubiak miraculously returns, mostly because the offense is his forte and is not the problem. That is why owner, Bob McNair gutted the defensive staff and elected to bring in "Uncle Wade" to shore things up and switch over to a 3-4 front. There is usually a learning curve with that and getting the right personnel up front is a challenge so don't expect huge strides in 2011. However, they will spend the majority of this draft looking for help on that side of the ball and they will mostly find it in a deep DL, OLB and decent not great CB draft. The Texans know they need to fix the secondary which is why they went CB in the first in 2010 but Kareem Jackson disappointed in year 1. At #11, Peterson, Prince, Jimmy Smith or Rasi Dowling should all be available and probably are good fits to at least start improving this secondary that has to play Peyton twice a year. The other good news for the Texans is there are a decent amount of pass rushing OLB's in this draft that they can opt for in Round 1 or 2 possibly. Cushing and Barwin should make the transition fine but adding a guy like Justin Houston of Georgia, Chris Carter, Fresno or Akeem Ayers from UCLA may be a good fit. Of course of paramount importance is always the NG in the 3-4 and some teams have been looking for that player for years. This is the anchor of this defense and 330 lb. players that also have quick feet don't grow on trees so it may take a while to get one.

3) JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS: Forever on the hot seat, coach Jack Del Rio will need to get instant production from this draft if he is going to stick around for a while. In this QB driven league, it is no wonder that he has had mostly subpar seasons with previous bust Byron Leftwich and now the very average David Garrard. Could this be the year the Jags look to finally land a franchise QB? Well there is a lot of depth at that position but franchise QBs? I don't think you have more than a couple that could turn out that way but no one that will help immediately. If they go QB early, it tells you all you need to know about GM Smith's feelings on Del Rio's long term potential as coach. Garrard is serviceable at best and won't be winning any championships, let alone a division with Peyton Manning around any time soon. So what will the Jags do? They have to go primarily defense yet again in this draft with a focus on WR as well. Sims-Walker was an enigma last year and is most likely not going to be resigned after underachieving. Mike Thomas looked good last year but Hill, Dillard and Underwood are not exactly household names at WR. They need some help here. At pick 16, they likely will not have a shot at Green or Julio Jones in the draft unless they trade up and they have too many needs on defense to give away picks. A guy like Torey Smith or Tandon Doss may be a good fit in the 2nd. On defense and likely in the 1st round, they will go where the talent runs deep at DE. Jordan or Kerrigan would be good compliments to Aaron Kampman who is coming off a season-ending knee injury and this will also disguise some of the worst secondary play in the league. If there were a game changing Safety in this draft, that would be the pick but unfortunately for the Jags, that doesn't exist this year.

4) TENNESSEE TITANS: The good news is the Titans have the 8th pick in the draft as a reward for their disappointing 6-10 finish. The bad news is they need a QB and you could argue that all 7 teams in front of them, except maybe Cleveland if they really like McCoy, also needs one. The depth at this position reminds me of 1983 however I don't hold as much hope that we are looking at the next Marino, Eason, and O'Brien, more like a lot of Todd Blackledge. Out are Jeff Fisher after 16 seasons and the controversial Vince Young, we think. Kerry Collins remains serviceable but is not the answer so look for the Titans to see what happens in front of them. If a guy like Gabbert, Mallett or even Newton (new and improved VY?) are available, they may pull the trigger to create the new face of the franchise going forward. The next biggest need for the Titans will be shoring up their DL which has been pedestrian since "Fat Albert" became the Redskins problem. There is a chance that Nick Fairley could fall and give the Titans the chance to add him to the mix. This would be a good move even though there are questions about his dedication and desire (think Gaines Adams from several years ago). I like Stephen Paea as well here as someone who can add some size and strength to this DL. As for the rest of their draft, I like the Titans to focus on the OL side of the ball with Munchak now the HC in Tennessee and if the Titans go for a TE in this shallow position in the draft this year, it will tell you what the new regime thinks of a longtime prospect Jared Cook.

NFC SOUTH TEAM DRAFT NEEDS

1) NEW ORLEANS SAINTS: The 2009 Super Bowl champs had a tough year defending their crown with a rash of injuries and an aging defense in 2010. The Saints face some decisions in the offseason with some of their Free Agents (whenever we have FA again) and so will need to focus on replacing some of those potential missing parts. In addition, the NFC South has suddenly taken flight with arguably some of the best young QBs in the game sandwiched into this division with Ryan, Freeman, Brees and whoever the Panthers likely select with the first pick this year need to find help in pressuring opposing QBs. With the 24th pick, they may miss out on the really impactful DE talent but still could find an impact player to help in the 5 technique of the aggressive style DC Gregg Williams like to play. If D'quan Bowers is really in freefall, he can't slip past the Saints who will get tremendous potential upside at this pick for a guy who was arguably the top DE in the early draft prognostications of February. The rest of the Saints draft has much more to do with FA. They have decisions to make, albeit easy ones, at the RB position where Reggie is due a huge $11.8 million salary for 2011 and Thomas already a Free Agent after an injury plagued 2010 put him in Sean Payton's doghouse. Chris Ivory turned out to be a great find as an undrafted FA, reinforcing the theory to forget about taking RBs early. Either way, he will need help if they move on so look for Round 3 to be where the Saints address this need. In Round 2, I see the Saints trying to sure up their OL where there is decent depth at the position. OT Bushrod and C Goodwin are unrestricted FA's this year so they will at minimum need to add some help to the offensive front to protect their investment in franchise Drew Brees. I think Rackley out of small school Lehigh could stay on the board until this pick and would be a great find that could easily put him in the starting lineup right away if they lose both guys to FA. The rest of their draft probably will focus back on the defense, particularly LB and S where Darren Sharper look like he aged 5 years after their Super Bowl season and Roman Harper is also a FA this year. Unfortunately this position lacks true playmakers so the Saints likely will not find their replacement in this draft.

2) CAROLINA PANTHERS: The Panthers have the unenviable position of being rewarded for having the worst team in 2010 with the first pick in this year's draft. This spot is always more of a burden than a blessing and the financial and bust risk at this spot is bigger than Jamarcus Russell's appetite at an all you can eat buffet. The Panthers went Clauson in Round 2 at QB in 2010 and he was to be a can't miss, ready to play prospect coming out of Charlie Weiss's system. This was clearly not the case as Clausen looked lost through his 10 starts last year with 3 TDs and 9 INTs. The question for new HC, Ron Rivera is, do you burn two top picks in consecutive years for a "franchise" QB? If you do, which one do you take this year with a deep class but full of boom or bust potential. Rumor abound regarding them taking Newton but I just cannot believe that they are serious in taking him with the first pick. He may turn out to be a good pro QB, but top pick? How many running, inaccurate, big armed QBs do we have to see before we realize that this is not the prototype for a winning QB in the NFL? My guess is finances are going to play a roll in deciding this pick here as well. They may go Dareus at DT here or Vonn Miller at OLB given Rivera's penchant for defense. On the other side, it may be hard to resist a talent like AJ Green or Julio Jones even though it is the top pick in the draft and WR's typically run at around a 50% bust ratio. If Green really is the second coming of Calvin Johnson, can you pass him up with Steve Smith getting long in the tooth and the need for points in this division? I say this is the inside play here as they look at what the Bucs have given Josh Freeman to work with before they decide that Clausen is not the answer at QB. That will be the first of many surprises in this year's draft.

3) TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS: Was it the schedule, did the Bucs overachieve or are they really an up and coming young team a few years away from contending? 2011 will go a long way to answering that question. While the Bucs just missed the playoffs with a 10-6 record, they still have many areas of need and Talib added to that problem with his offseason antics playing target practice with his mom on his sister's boyfriend. This really complicates things because with Ronde Barber having maybe a year or so left, their secondary suddenly is very young and beatable. As mentioned before, the way to improve the backend of the defense is to apply more pressure up front and last year, the Bucs were one of the worst at that notching only 26 sacks all season. The Bucs will go OLB here and are said to love Houston but I think they won't be able to pass on Bowers if he freefalls to their 20th pick (reminding Bucs fans of the fall that Sapp took right into their lap before). Either way, they will look for someone to pressure the passer which is a must in the NFC South. As for the rest of the draft, the Bucs are going to need some help at ILB where they just don't seem to respect the work that Barrett Rudd has done over the years leading the team in tackles two consecutive years. He is somewhat undersized and will want a big contract this year and the Bucs may be more inclined to look to replace him through FA or the draft. The Bucs will also need to find a CB somewhere in the first three rounds and will also need to add to their suspect OL and RB position as they may lose Davin Joseph RG to FA. Cadillac Williams is a FA this year and is a great story and loved in Tampa but they may need to upgrade here as well if they don't believe that Kareem Huggins can come back from tearing up his knee. This is an important draft for the Bucs if they have longterm plans on building on the 2010 season and so far Marc Dominik has been up to the challenge finding great talent in the middle rounds like Mike Williams WR in the 4th and Cody Grimm S in the 7th.

4) ATLANTA FALCONS: The Falcons came off one of their best seasons in franchise history at 13-3 but a disappointing loss to eventual champions, Green Bay proved that this team still has some missing parts to be found if it is going to contend for a Super Bowl. One thing that they learned is that Roddy White by himself is not enough to beat the elite defenses. Matt Ryan needs another weapon as Harry Douglas was not the answer and Tony Gonzalez is at the end of his HOF career. I like the Falcons to look at a speedster with their 27th pick much in the mold of a DeSean Jackson in order to back up the defenses. I like Titus Young, Boise State, Randall Cobb, Kentucky or Maryland's Torrey Smith to fill this need if still available and at least one of them if not all should be. The Falcons also may go to the TE position since only Kyle Rudolph really projects as a 1st round talent at TE and he could get on the field with Gonzalez in two TE sets and learn some of the intricacies of the game from one of the best. Another area where the Falcons have to find help in is the secondary. They could always use more help up front to apply pressure but they were exposed versus top QB play like Aaron Rodgers in last year's playoffs so I wouldn't be surprised if they went CB in the first and looked to find their speed WR in the 2nd or later. At 27 they may not find the likes of Patrick Peterson or Prince Amukamara at that spot but Ras-I Dowling out of Virginia could be a good find and is a high character guy which is part of Dimitrioff's winning formula since taking over for Rich McKay as GM.

WASHINGTON /January 20, 2018 (AP)(STL.News) — Symbols of American promise have turned into emblems of American dysfunction amid a dispute in Congress over spending and immigration that has forced scores of federal agencies and outposts to close their doors.

The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island have turned away visitors in New York, due to what the National Park Service described as “a lapse in appropriations,” a bureaucratic term for a lack of money. In Philadelphia, crowds of tourists have been told that Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were signed, and the Liberty Bell are closed.

The shuttered icons were some of the easiest-to-spot impacts of the partial government closure. Funds ran out at midnight Friday, leaving 48 hours before the most dramatic effect — the furloughing of nearly a million federal employees — goes into effect.

As in shutdowns past, federal services were carved into two categories — essential and non-essential — with the former set to carry on as normal. In that category, the mail will be delivered and Social Security checks still go out, the air traffic control system stays up and running, as do the FBI, Customs and Border Protection and veterans hospitals.

Still, there were plenty of inconveniences to irk American taxpayers.

While active-duty troops will stay at their posts during a shutdown, people stationed overseas were touched by the political fallout almost immediately. The American Forces Network, which broadcasts American radio and television programming in Europe and other locations outside the U.S., put a message on its Facebook page that said its services would not be available “due to the government shutdown.”

The notice sparked a series of angry reactions from viewers, with several noting that the timing couldn’t have been worse: The NFL conference championships will be played Sunday. “During NFL PLAYOFFS?!” one post read. “AFN, start a GoFundMe & broadcast these games! Make it happen!”

Yet congressional Republicans and Democrats appeared no closer Saturday to settling their differences over immigration policy and striking an agreement to fund the government. The longer the shutdown lasts, the worse the effects will be. Almost half the 2 million civilian federal workers will be barred from doing their jobs if the shutdown extends into Monday.

That’ll put on hold a swath of government functions, from the processing of new veterans benefits claims to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s support for the government’s annual seasonal flu program. At the Internal Revenue Service, more than half of the 80,565 employees will be barred from working just as tax filing season is beginning and the agency is dealing with the sweeping changes made by the new GOP tax law.

Until then, much of the immediate fallout was in Washington, where lawmakers carried out the part of jobs that involve assigning blame.

There were few signs of shutdown at the Capitol, where lawmakers spent most of the day making speeches about the dispute. A women’s march carried on as planned, under the eye of U.S. Park Police protection. Vice President Mike Pence did not reschedule a visit to the Middle East, the administration labeling the trip “integral” to U.S. national security and diplomacy.

Trump’s own next scheduled trip was up in the air. The president was due to leave for the Swiss Alps on Wednesday evening to participate in the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. A number of White House staffers and agency advance teams are already there awaiting his arrival.

The president was forced to cancel his plan to attend a fundraiser Saturday night at his Florida estate.

Budget Director Mick Mulvaney told reporters Friday that a shuttering of the government would “look very different” from the 16-day government closure in 2013 under President Barack Obama. He said the previous administration “weaponized” the government shutdown in budget negotiations and did not encourage agencies to lessen the impact with unobligated funds. He said, “They chose to make it worse.”

Underscoring the point, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke tweeted a photo of himself talking to students at the World War II Memorial in Washington, blocks from White House.

The memorial and other open-air parks were open Saturday unlike in 2013 when they became a flashpoint in the government shutdown, as veterans were denied the right to visit and protested loudly. House Republicans in particular took up their cause and slammed Obama and Interior Secretary Sally Jewell.

“Not all parks are fully open, but we are all working hard to make as many areas as accessible to the public as possible,” Zinke said.

But several famous locations were closed shortly after the shutdown started. In New York, the National Park Service said the closure of the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island was effective immediately and until further notice.

“To get this close where you can see them, and the government shuts them down — that’s very, very frustrating,” said Dan O’Meara, a firefighter from Fresno, California, who is descended from an Irish immigrant family that entered through Ellis Island. “But now, we’re not allowed to go out there and see it.”

At Independence Hall in Philadelphia, security guards wearing all black stood around the hall, shooing away people who got too close. A park ranger did the same at the doorway into the building that surrounds the Liberty Bell, saying “something’ll have to happen in Washington” when asked when it would reopen.

Gaetana Dimauro, 34, a property inspector from Adelaide, Australia, sat near the blocked off entrance of the Liberty Bell in a bright red New Jersey Devils sweater.

“Huh,” she asked when told about the shutdown, “I had no idea that it’d be closed.”

A national monument in northern New Mexico is mostly closed to visitors because of the shutdown. Officials of Bandelier National Monument at Los Alamos say campgrounds, the visitor center and other main areas of the monument are closed as of Saturday but that the entrance road and a few trails remain open.

Martin Luther King Jr.’s childhood home, historic Ebenezer Baptist Church and the visitor center at MLK National Historic Site in Atlanta are closed. And Big Cypress National Preserve, Everglades National Park and other federally managed natural areas in Florida will be partially closed.

The shutdown wasn’t knocking “Old Ironsides” out of commission. The USS Constitution, the world’s oldest commissioned warship, will remain open to tourists during the shutdown at the Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston, officials said.
