Waypoints, Take 2: POV Shipper
It's been touted and mentioned at length. It has been awaited with immoderate, naïve anticipation. It has been read highlighter in hand, in the hope to discern its true meaning and purpose. It also was the last straw for some people, pushing them out of the fandom when above anticipation and expectations proved somewhat hollow.
To the dismayed and the heartbroken, I say: I hope you do realize this is a) heavily edited and b) published with the substantial contribution of a ghostwriter, handsomely paid to neatly round off the edges and fit this travelogue-cum-memoir in a pre-shaped pitch.
This bloke:
The dilligent Matt Whyman, novelist. Agony uncle for several UK press and online outlets, specialized in teenage love and relationships' counselling. British Council executive, with several stints abroad under his belt. Part and parcel of a number of public health awareness campaigns sponsored by the UK Government, with a special interest for above teenage love, sexuality and relationships. And established, top-tier ghostwriter.
Among others, on behalf of Billy Connoly, the "Big Yin" himself, proof that the Scottish mafia is discreet, but by no means inexistent (an excellent thing). Ah, Sir Billy Connoly and his New-Zealander wife, Lady Pamela Stephenson, whom he met in 1979, while filming together a sketch for BBC2's Not the Nine O'Clock News. Chemistry took care of itself, because she ditched her recently married husband and moved in with Connoly in 1981. Both (at least nominally: Connoly considers himself an atheist, nowadays) Roman-Catholic and married at the time of getting together, Stephenson divorced in 1984 and Connoly in 1985 from their respective partners and live in marital bliss since 1989. For some reason, I think these tidbits are important, go figure.
Sidenote: if you haven't already, watch (if still available on Netflix, otherwise I implore you to look for it on other platforms) an exceptional French series, Call My Agent. You will not only love the humor, you will educate yourself with the basic ropes of celeb PR.
At face value, I couldn't think of a more appropriate consigliere to deal with the brief that (spare the failed Everest movie project) prompted this book. It is not that difficult to figure out:
Evoke at length the past to offer a modicum of explanation of the present. Mention traumatic relationship with father to explain fear of commitment in a solid, steady relationship.
In the process, pay lip service to the Narrative, but take substantial liberty and a daring stand when discussing the horrific Wentworth episode-that-nobody-could-watch. Express controlled discontent towards TPTB, to have the upper hand while negotiating a possible season 8 (fun fact, it worked)
Conveniently send into oblivion Flukenzie Floozy, Quarantein Hooter's Madonna and any other two letter combo born from the hyperactive imagination of the Queen of Nothing, while respecting ToS of bachelorhood - it's still good for the Sales Department.
Camouflage reality of S&C entity, under a London Blitz-worthy blanket of smoke & mirrors, but allow leaks that could easily pass for creative license or babble. Shippers will get it. Dots will connect, coins will drop. We shall overcome.
Simultaneously, offer a plausible explanation for the above UFO co-star/bro-sis/Ginger Jesus- Mother Mary relationship, primarily to comfort and control Mordor, that Troll Nursery. Say what the hell you want, including something along the lines of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, but say it LOUDER FOR THOSE SHIPPER PEOPLE IN THE BACK OF THE COACH. They are used to this one step forward/one slap backward tango and by now, few (if any) will budge elsewhere on the fandom spectrum.
Discreetly crush homosexuality rumors, because they are borderline calumny, at this point in time. However, the Data Lounge crowd could make Mordor look like Bora Bora, so the sooner they get bored and move to the next babyface, the better.
Substantially promote MPC and Great Glen Company, consolidating the image of the giving, thoughtful individual, with a creative mind and savvy enough to branch out in lucrative business projects. Extend fan/consumer/client base to a younger demographic.
Pave the way for exit plan. This report will not discuss it, but hints may have been detected. :)
Wow. This is a mouthful. And I have to say Mr. Whyman did a more than decent job of it, even if for a trained eye the seams are showing, at times.
Like this:
Frazer. You can't make this shit up. This is SRH.
As compared to this (excuse the repetition: the blogger is not lazy - the blogger tries to make a point):
This is Whyman. This has been probably paid extra for. This is painful to read. This failed.
As for leaks, I've found a good handful. Adding all of them here higgledy-piggledy would be tedious, boring and I am not Miss Marple. But I've noticed that feelings hide in plain sight, usually disguised in a song you whistle or some verse you remember, just to keep you company on the road, a propos of nothing (my foot):
I don't know what this woman is talking about, you might say. Whatevs. How about this:
To keep myself sane, I usually rip off a Twix bar or light up a Benson. Others resort to Shakespeare, in lieu of granola bars. The world is a wonderfully diverse place. LOL, don't mind me. I am a dillusional woman, for whom all hope is lost.
Sometimes, this whole pastoral reverie has a Lewis Carroll charm to it (you might want to open this in another tab):
Who is your queen, Sir? Surely not the cheerful woman in leggings, flats and a Playboy T-shirt, huh?
Maybe the key is this childish botanical pun, tucked away at the end of the book:
Knowing that the P in Psillyosam is silent, as in *urv the Psychologist, we read and we grin:
[P]sillyosam Mushroom. Silly O'Sam. Silly, oh Sam.
Hashtag silly. An apt response to lemon and hugs.
To sum it up on a cheerful note, Waypoints is the 4 S book:
Struggles - Success - (fake) Solitude - (with a clear optic to avoid at all costs) Scandal
I thank you for your time while reading this. I hope it was worth it and yes, I confidently rest my case. Until the next memoir, which I reasonably hope would be vastly different.

Vera & Joan - saving each other
In celebration of it being the anniversary of the show’s final episode, and more importantly the iconic Freakytits rescue scene, I want to return to something I’ve previously touched on before – the parallels between Joan and Vera and how they have inherently changed one another – but specifically today I’m going to be talking about them saving each other in both the literal sense but also from their past selves.
Or in other words; let’s talk about how these two women have both saved one another from being choked to death.
In season 5 episode 11 Vera goes out of her way to try and save Joan from being hanged as a result from her own hubris and as retaliation for the sins of her past. Prior to this moment, Joan has spent the entire season trying to antagonise and stifle Vera’s newfound growth in her position as Governor – a position she only holds due to the path Joan put her on through their mentorship. Despite the fact that it was Joan’s efforts which helped Vera shed the timid mouse persona and put on the Governor pants, Joan can’t help but lash out and try to tear Vera down for the crime of being in the position of power which she covets. After a season of having her ex mentor actively manipulating everyone around her and antagonising them, Vera still see’s Joan being torn down from her new place of power and hanged by the (rightfully) vengeful inmates and knows she can’t let herself watch her die.
Despite her efforts she doesn’t succeed at stopping the other inmates from attempting their retribution, however she does manage to intercept and stop them from completing their attempt on Joan’s life. When it at first seems that she was too late to save Joan’s life, Vera refuses to accept this and begins an attempt to resuscitate her and succeeds – through sharing a part of herself and giving Joan the breath of life. This action is done out of selfless kindness and it’s something that Joan is unable to understand at first, but the action alone is enough for Joan to not only express gratitude to Vera but also confess her fear – an act of vulnerability which is something she never would have allowed herself to do before. Through this act of kindness Vera has already changed Joan in a way, though neither of them can really know this or acknowledge it properly yet.
In season 8 we then see this antagonistic role reversed, with Vera constantly lashing out towards Joan despite her former mentor's genuine attempts to become a better person and connect with her. This attempt at redemption by Joan is clearly influenced by her relationship with Vera; while suffering under amnesia as Kath, it’s Vera who she finds herself gravitating towards and wanting to reach out to; it’s this desire to be close to Vera that drives Kath and then Joan to continue her therapy and try to become a better person. As mentioned in my other post, Vera struggles to accept that Joan is no longer taking the antagonist role in their relationship and her refusal to see the genuine efforts of Joan is what leads to Vera taking on that role herself during this season. While this does prompt Joan to consider revenge against Vera at a point, she doesn’t follow through on it once she witnesses Ann verbally tearing Vera down in a way that’s not altogether dissimilar to how she once would have spoken to her.
Witnessing this interaction between Vera and Ann – who is both a figure of authority to Vera much like Joan used to be, but also the last remaining tie in Vera’s life to who she was before working at Wentworth – reminds Joan to not fall into her old patterns of behaviour and instead helps her put aside her anger at Vera’s recent treatment towards her, enough so that in the next episode she is willing to sacrifice her own freedom for Vera through her confession at the trial. Vera doesn’t accept that Joan’s sacrifice in the courtroom was an act of selfless kindness and instead continues to question the woman’s motivations and believe the worst of her. She is willfully ignorant to the ways in which Joan has changed and that she has done so because of her – because she treated Joan with kindness she didn’t deserve.
So in the final episode, when the bomb goes off and Joan has one final chance at freedom, instead of disappearing without a witness she instead goes and finds Vera. When Vera is being choked to death by Ann – when the one remaining remnant of her past life tries to stifle her for daring to grow out of her submissive role – , it’s Joan who saves her life. Despite all the aggression and dismissive behaviour Vera has shown her this season, Joan can’t watch Vera be killed, because to her Vera has become the most important person in her life – even more important than revenge. And so Joan kills Ann, both saving Vera’s life and cutting her free from the past which was stifling her new-found strength, and then she carries her out of the rubble of the prison which defines them. After carrying her to safety Joan sets Vera down on the ground, confesses that Vera needn’t worry about her in the future, and then walks away, allowing Vera to rise to her feet unassisted and make her own path ahead.
While both of them had nothing to gain and everything to lose by saving one another, it is these choices they made which ultimately and irrevocably changed who they are as a person. In this way though they are now free to move on from Wentworth and create their own futures as better people, they will always be a part of each other.
#plz ignore this is basically a day late because of timezones and work fucking me over so i didn't get to finish this when planned xx#wentworth#joan ferguson#vera bennett#freakytits#pamela rabe#kate atkinson#wentworth meta#my meta#original

What if season 2 is more like Persuasion?
I'm talking about the book by Jane Austen.
Okay, hear me out. I've seen a number of theories and ideas about how season 2 can go, especially about how things will get between Ed and Stede, and my personal theory is that what if it's a bit like it is in Persuasion for Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth.
(For those of you who haven't read the book, allow me to fill you in. Anne Elliot and Wentworth were engaged roughly 8 years prior to when the book takes place, but Anne broke off their engagement after being encouraged to do so by a family friend, Lady Russel, because Wentworth, at the time, was of a lower class than Anne. When the two meet up again in the book, things are always very awkward between them and Anne keeps feeling bad for how she feels for Wentworth, she's still in love with him, because she was the one to break off their engagement. But what she doesn't know is that Wentworth also still has feelings for her. In short, they're both super awkward around each other because they both still have feelings for each other and it isn't until the end of the book where they finally get back together again (spoilers))
So my theory is this: they meet up again somewhat early on, maybe half way through the season the absolute latest, and are just really really awkward around each other the entire time they are in vicinity of each other, both just absolutely dying over how much they care for one another but not doing anything about it, other than to yearn and pine until the very end of the season where they clear things up, talk things through as a crew, and get back together. And then in season three is when we get to see them be properly a couple.

Asks about my OTPs
Pick your top 10 OTPs without reading the questions, then answer the questions after you've made your list
Elizabeth and Darcy (Pride and Prejudice)
Belle and Beast (Beauty and the Beast 1991)
Anne and Wentworth (Persuasion)
Chuck and Sarah (Chuck)
Killian and Emma (Once Upon a Time)
Peeta and Katniss (The Hunger Games)
Stede and Ed (Our Flag Means Death)
Catherine and Henry (Northanger Abbey)
Snow and David (Once Upon a Time)
Leslie and Ben (Parks and Recreation)
Now here are the questions and answers!
1. Do you remember the episode/scene/chapter that you first started shipping 6? – Probably some time during the second book, when they really become a team protecting and comforting each other.
2. Have you ever read a fanfic about 2? – Haha yes, and written many!
3. Has a picture of 4 ever been your screen saver/profile picture/tumblr screen saver? – Nope!
4. If 7 were to suddenly break up today, what would your reaction be? – They kind of are broken up? It's devastating, but I hope season 2 will fix it!
5. Why is 1 so important? – Because they got me into the entire Jane Austen universe, which is one of my main interests and hobbies now.
6. Is 9 a funny ship or a serious ship? – Mostly serious, but they have their funny moments.
7. Out of all the ships listed, which ship has the most chemistry? – Elizabeth and Darcy or Chuck and Sarah.
8. Out of all your ships listed, which ship has the strongest bond? – Probably Peeta and Katniss since they went through such intense trauma together.
9. How many times have you read/watched the 10’s fandom? – 3 times, and I'll do it again.
10. Which ship has lasted the longest? – I don't know what this means. In their canon? Snow and David have been together for over 40 years by the end of the show, I think. In my heart? I've been into Belle and Beast ever since the movie came out over 31 years ago. In fandom? Elizabeth and Darcy have been going strong for over 200 years!
11. How many times, if ever, has 6 broken up? – I suppose they weren't really a couple during the period where Peeta wanted to murder Katniss lol! Plus they were fake dating and fake engaged for most of their relationship, so it's hard to tell what "broken up" means in this sort of context where they're not truly together to begin with.
12. If the world was suddenly thrust into a zombie apocalypse, which ship would make it out alive, 2 or 8? – 2, because Beast is a literal beast with claws and fangs and crap, and Belle is very smart. 8 are sweet little cuties who would get killed immediately lol!
13. Did 7 ever have to hide their relationship for any reason? – They both were kind of in denial about liking each other romantically, but that's not really the same thing. And they kind of broke up right after officially acknowledging they wanted to be together! I guess Stede was hiding his relationship when he went back to Mary.
14. Is 4 still together? – Kind of. The awful series finale makes their future murky.
15. Is 10 canon? – Yep, all of these ships are. I'm basic haha!
16. If all 10 ships were put into a couple’s Hunger Games, which couple would win? – Well Beast is the most dangerous physically, but he wouldn't want to kill anyone. So I'm going with Chuck and Sarah due to their physical training and Sarah's skill and lack of remorse over killing anyone she needs to.
17. Has anybody ever tried to sabotage 5’s ship? – Mostly Emma herself haha! I guess Neal and David kind of did, but not really actively/aggressively.
18. Which ship would you defend to the death and beyond? – I strongly believe in all of them, but Belle and Beast are the most in need of defense because some people see them as toxic, so I'm the most prickly about defending their relationship, I guess.
19. Do you spend hours a day going through 3’s tumblr page? – Nope, they're not super popular on Tumblr. I think only 1, 5, and 7 have a strong presence on Tumblr.
20. If an evil witch descended from the sky and told you that you had to pick one of the ten ships to break up forever or else she’d break them all forever, which ship would you sink? – I guess Catherine and Henry just because they could each easily find someone else to love and be happy with and not be forever devastated by their breakup. They're not, like, soulmates, just two cute young people who happened to get thrown together.
Tagging some people if they want to do this: @loonysama, @thefamilybruno, @annaofthenorthernlights, @bad-at-names-and-faces, @thecassadilla, @keeshya6, @bethanydelleman, @thatscarletflycatcher + anyone else! (No pressure to do this as usual!)

Wentworth
Rumor has it that the Wentworth family used to own a large fortune, but lost it due to generations of neglect. More recently, the Wentworth family is known for its big and clashing personalities.
After her husband Melville's death when the kids were still young, Cecily was forced into raising the children (that she had never been sure she was even ready for, and did there have to be so many!) all on her own. Now that she's in her golden years, Cecily is enjoying meeting lots of new people (especially the men) but it's a little difficult to make new "friends" when her adult children are always around.
Cecily Wentworth: female, elder, Sim Romance/Grilled Cheese (Become Hall of Famer) Libra (1/8/5/6/5) Culinary Career, OTH: Nature Traits: Slob, Natural born Performer, Angler, Irresistible, Grilled Cheese Lover
Vera has always been a little (or a lot) eccentric, but she doesn't notice when other people stare. Vera is passionate about her job and will happily chat anyone's ear off about lab projects and chemical reactions. A different sim might feel uncomfortable about her self-imposed space suit work uniform (barely tolerated by the high school administration), but Vera knows it's the only way to both get the teens excited about science and protect herself from spilled chemicals.
Vera Wentworth; female, adult, Sim Knowledge/Romance (Max out 7 Skills) Libra (0/8/3/7/7) Science Career, OTH: Nature Traits: Slob, Schmoozer, Eco-Friendly, Perceptive, Dislikes Children
Now that Linnea is an adult, she's dying to escape from her crazy, awkward, messy family. Linnea is fairly sure that no one else in the house has washed a single dish since she grew tall enough to reach the sink. Linnea dreams of single-handedly restoring the Wentworth fortune, by whatever means necessary. Maybe she'll share a little with her family, if they start acting a little more dignified and stop leaving massive puddles outside of the shower.
Linnea Wentworth: female, adult, Sim Fortune/Knowledge (Become Hall of Famer) Virgo (10/4/8/1/2) Business Career, OTH: Science Traits: Neat, Inappropriate, Meteorologist, Equestrian, Computer Whiz
Hadley has always felt overshadowed by her louder, peppier, more outgoing siblings. Everyone else seems to know what exactly what they want out of life, especially her twin sister Linnea. All Hadley has ever wished for is to be more like her family members, who can talk to strangers like it's nothing. Recently though, she's started seeing someone new that she met at work. Maybe this is the first step towards Hadley overcoming her crippling shyness.
Hadley Wentworth: female, adult, Sim Popularity/Knowledge (Have 20 simultaneous best friends) Virgo (3/1/8/5/8) Slacker Career, OTH: Tinkering Traits: Gloomy, Friendly, Techie, Cat Lover, Genius
Delaney keeps everyone on their toes with his constant energy. His mother always says that he never stops moving, even when he's asleep. Delaney may be hyperactive and have a hard time staying focused at school, but he is also devoted to his large and often nutty family. He wishes he wasn't the youngest, because he loves playing with kids. He can't wait to have some of his own someday.
Delaney Wentworth: male, teenager, Sim Family (Graduate 3 Children from College) Sagittarius (0/4/9/7/5) High School, Athletic Career, OTH: Nature Traits: Slob, Brave, Gatherer, Nurturing
Challenges rolled for: - round: Regular Day: No special events - season: Regular Season: Nothing Major Happens - week: Regular Week: Nothing Major Happens

Thinking about how after the ending of Wentworth Vera is the only person to know that Joan not only escaped but also saved her life as she did so. How this final moment must have reframed their recent interactions for Vera, making her realize that the two of them had changed one another in more ways than they had realized. Even if they never see each other again from now on, they will be changed irrevocably because of their time together.
Throughout each one of their interactions that season, Vera was aggressive and lashing out at Joan even when it was cruel and went against who she was to do so. If Joan wouldn't be the cruel woman Vera once knew her to be, then she would try to provoke her into becoming that woman again, but in doing so it really just showed that Vera had become the thing she said she'd never be - like Governor Ferguson. Her actions towards Joan/Kath in the final season are emotionally charged in a similar way to when Joan believed that Vera had betrayed her in season 3 and had become paranoid and acted rashly with little concern to others, with the justification that it was all for the "greater good" and that she knew best.
Despite everyone around her and all the evidence suggesting that Joan really was harmless as Kath at the start of season 8, Vera refuses to believe that the woman who had such an impact on her life has gone and is paranoid that she will end up hurt/betrayed if she believes in Kath. This paranoia and stubbornness then leads her to act cruelly towards Kath because she justifies how she is acting as being for the "greater good" of everyone by punishing Joan for her past actions - despite the fact that it's not really Joan she's punishing in those moments. And it's these actions (ordering the spitbag in particular) that cause Joan's memories to return and therefore unleash the monster back into her life.
Vera had taken over the antagonistic role that was once Joan's in their relationship, emulating the authoritative and self-righteous character of her past mentor-and-friend-turned-enemy. And as she took on that role, Joan became the one with little power or control in their relationship, deferring meekly to Vera as her superior in the prison hierarchy. Someone raised to believe that emotions are a weakness was having to recognise and process that not only did she have strong emotions, but that these emotions were brought on because of Vera. Throughout their interactions in the season, Joan is incredibly earnest towards Vera and shows a great level of concern and care for her even if at first she doesn't understand it herself. It is through seeing and talking to Vera again that Joan learns to put others before herself - something that was once Vera's biggest weakness (before she met Joan), has now become a sign of positive growth for Joan.
That's not to say that Vera wasn't still the caring and loving woman we've seen throughout the show or that Joan didn't still engage and desire cruel/violent behaviours , but rather that over the course of their relationship they drew strength from the others weaknesses. Despite any claim of hatred for one another by the final episode, it's impossible to hide just how much the two have changed through knowing one another.
As Joan walks away from Vera and into the distance at the end of the final episode, the symbiotic nature of their relationship comes to an end, but the two of them will be forever changed from knowing one another.

"OPEN COMMANDO OFFICE TO HELP PROVIDE LABOUR," Hamilton Spectator. May 26, 1943. Page 7 & 11. --- Active Assistance to Farmers Aim of Committee Now Registering Workers --- Bureau Located at City Hall Serves as Medium For Solving Problem ---- The Farm Commando Service of Wentworth County has been organized with an office in the City Hall and plans for active assistance to farmers are well advanced. Needs of the rural communities for extra labour are generally recognized and present indications are that a loyal body of Hamiltonians will respond to the appeal and render service to make it possible for this part of the country to return the greatest yield to meet the crisis.
The office in the City Hall will be on the ground floor, known as the aldermen's room, and here a full-time official, whose services have been given by the Ontario Department of Agriculture, will be in charge. This office will be a busy spot, it is expected, and it will remain open as long as there is need for assistance, Persons willing to work in the country are asked to register and farmers who need help will make known their wants there, the headquarters serving as a clearing house for meeting the pressing labour problem.
Service Force Active W. B. Powell is chairman of the Commando Service and D. M. Park is secretary. The undertaking is being given, staunch support. With greater food production more essential than ever before several disappointing factors have been experienced which threaten to reduce the normal yield, It was pointed out to-day. The backward season with unusual rainfall has made it Impossible for farmers to get on, the land and when the break in the weather does come the producers will experience a rush season. This will necessitate the use of a great force of workers if the maximum effort is to be achieved. Across the sea the men in uniform and the civilian populations are depending upon Canada to share the responsibility of maintaining food supplies, so the Dominion will have to produce amounts greatly in excess of home requirements to meet the export needs.
County Meetings Arranged Last year the volunteers rendered valuable service on the farms and, with the need more urgent now, it is expected that their numbers will be greatly increased. The workers are inexperienced, but there are important Jobs which they can do and the Commando Service is anxious that every avail- able person be registered for the important task ahead. Meetings at which the labour problem will be discussed have been arranged for farmers of Wentworth at the following centres:
May 27, 8. p.m., Saltfleet, at Institute hall, Stoney Creek: May 28, 8 p.m., Beverly, at Township hall, Rockton; June 1, 8 p.m., East Flamboro, Community hall, Car lisle; June 2, 8 p.m., Glanford, Community hall, Mount Hope; June 3, 8 p.m., Binbrook, Memorial hall, Binbrook; June 4, 8 p.m., Ancaster, Township hall, Ancaster; June 2, 8 p.m., Barton, Gage Avenue school.
