High School Diploma or GED

A minimum of 1-2 years of applicable welding experience

ASNT NDT Level III Certification.

Skills and Proficiencies:

Work is primarily in San Diego, CA and Norfolk, VA but you may travel for extended periods to other shipyards in the USA and to other Navy ports outside the USA

Other Responsibilities:

Physical Requirements:

Lifts at least 100 pounds at one time and 60 pounds for an extended period of time.

Relocates a 12 foot stepladder without assistance.

Works at various heights up to 60 feet and can climb and maintain balance on scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks and all types of ladders.

Walks, climbs, lifts, squats, crawls, kneels, pushes, pulls and reaches overhead on a routine and repetitive basis.

Possess good vision (may be corrected vision), the ability to see in color, and the ability to hear and communicate in English.

May use a standard ladder without exceeding the weight limit while carrying tools.

To keep things simple I am calling the current car I have Car A and the new car as Car B. I have insurance that runs out on CAR A in 2 months time which I want to keep on the basis that I don't want to lose my no claims bonus for this current year by cancelling the insurance. I have no limits, success is mines for the taking

MY Story I guess I always talk myself up to handling the perfect storm. Frankly being in the midst of the storm currently can be tragic or a considerable learning experience. I'm a survivor I guess I can say, I suffer from depression but it has become manageable over the years until now. This point in my life will either make me or break me, a city kid alone in the countryside pursuing a trade school in hopes of obtaining a platform to go back to college. I've always wanted to go to college whereas its almost impossible where I'm from without support of friends or family. San Diego, Ca is a costly place to live especially without being in the midst of family. Growing up from group home to group home was character building for me. I had to manage my emotional struggle at a young age & still try to pick up tools to be a successful adult. I feel as if the hardest part of my life had it's breaking point when I had turned 18. I was released from the juvenile system & shortly after stranded in most cases struggling hard to pull my life together. Not too long after I became a homeless young man. I ventured out in my stages of homelessness to sleeping in a garage I started working an under the table job. I realized that In order to financially be stable I have to go back to school to further my education. Me & my mom fell off right around the time she befriended me to the foster youth system. So gathering information from her to receive financial aid was utterly impossible. I wasn't aware at the time that being in foster care I had the ability to go to college for free. I was a lost child searching desperately to be loved, sadly that love was never found. I became so self hateful while being in the group home it turned into suicidal attempts. I was alone, judged & misunderstood a deserted child to the juvenile system just wanted to be loved. With that being said going to college was impossible I didn't know where to start. At 18 years old I was so lost & suffering from depression which did not help whatsoever. I didn't have the funds to pay for my medication I took to stabilize my depression as I battle through my early adulthood. My depression got worse as I got older at 19 years old I was finally getting off of the street. I had a part time job of course it was under the table but it was my means of supporting myself. & with the job being part time I finally was able to go back to college I received the board of governors fee waiver. Which meant my classes were paid for shortly after I had to drop out because school books were so expensive. Not too long after I dropped out of college due to financial issues I stopped working and lost the room I was renting. Pretty much gave up & at the moment I learned that I had manic depression after I almost successfully killed myself. I wanted to go so bad I felt deserted unloved I became physically unhealthy I lost a lot of weight. I decided that, that night was it was time to end my suffering. I vividly remember that night because somehow I ended up on the side of the road. At that moment I new it was a turning point in my life where something had to change. Ironically in the midst of going in & out of convulsions I new in order for my life to change I had to change. That following night I was at the emergency room I starred telling myself life is a process. At 20 I started working & somehow I managed to pay for my school books evidently it obviously still wasn't enough to live on my own productively. So I dropped out of college & worked full time and eventually I saved up enough money to buy a Toyota Avalon 2001. I knew if needed to make more money & at that time uber was booming in the business industry. Sadly I didn't have enough time to spare to re enroll back into Grossmont Community College. So I saved up, i mean I actually drove so much that If it was going to be my last fare for the night. If I was too far to drive home, I'd sleep in my car. Instead of going home to my apartment, life is one hell of a ride I must say. Because after everything was going great I once more lost it all at 22. I lost my license, but now i realize why After I lost my license why I lost it. I lost sight of my goal & everything came crashing down around me. After that I became really depressed I forgot why I fought hard to live at 18. That I cycled down into the lowest I've ever been in my depressive state 22 was the hardest year I thought. I became depressed I drove to the beach and in my mind if I'm going to do it I'll make it righteous. I'm the type of person I guess when I believe in it I just have this knowing that I can make it happen it's weird. So I drove to the beach I had a water bottle filled with coolant, In the midst of parking my car in an alley. In the process of walking to the sand & drink my misery goodbye. I remember this day because loosing my drivers license was the best thing that happened to me. I had my headphones in & Pandora was on shuffle. Manio - All The Above started playing & I realized how far I have come & cried my eyes out in all honesty I cried because of how selfish I became in that moment. I told myself I have a daughter who needs me. I made a vow to never pursue suicide again, my daughter will have a better life. I refuse to give in I will obtain my MBA in business & administration with a minor in public relations. At 23 & my daughters mother separated & guess what. It was a painful heartbreak. Yes I became very depressed but I remembered my vow I made to my daughter. It's okay to get depressed but it's more selfish to act upon it. I live for my daughter & if I'm going to live for her it was time to get serious with myself. I created a page on Facebook that was designed for only me when I became depressed. They are self made inspirational quotes, quoted by me based around what I go through. When my storm comes I embrace it cause if not it will only drag me down. My perfect storm comes around few months to say hello. I'm 24 now I left California in pursuit of my welding certification. Welders make enough money for me to finally become financially stable enough to. Go back to college, I've been welding for 3 months here at Tulsa Welding School. It's utterly hard but I have a bigger goal in mind that I will reach. I know my worth & how much father I can go cause I've gotten myself this far. I will graduate from an ivy league, I don't know how I'll do it. But every time I said I don't know how somehow I figured it out.

Marine Welder

Description:

Position Summary: The welder welds metal components with appropriate equipment to fit and join, fabricate, and/or repair a variety of marine equipment and structural components per specifications and in accordance with the production schedule. Performs SMAW, GMAW, and other welding techniques in all positions of various metal and alloys. Must be familiar with ABS & NAVSEA standards.

Requirements:

Marine Structural Welder Requirements –

Performs welding duties using wire welding GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding), FCAW (Flux Core Arc Welding), GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding), or SMAW (Stick Welding)

Weld steel components with welding equipment as specified by procedures, layouts, blueprints, diagrams, work orders, or oral instructions. Welds range from simple tacks to complex welds, performed in varying positions

Works includes set-up, laying out work using fixtures and guides to repair, modify, or fabricate parts and/or equipment products

Operates and/or uses related equipment and tools which include forklifts, hoists, slings, grinders (portable & bench), cutting torches, hand tools, drills, punches, a tape measure, and Air Arc

Keeps equipment operational by completing preventive maintenance requirements; follow manufacturer’s instructions; troubleshoot malfunctions; call for repairs and complete the daily check sheets

Reads, understands, and follows job order specifications, blueprints, work instructions, and procedures.

Maintains level of work performance in accordance with standards and/or job order specifications

Participates in process and product development and improvement programs, teams, and focus groups

Maintains a safe working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations. Keep work area clean and clean up after project completion or end of shift as appropriate

Education/Training:

High School Diploma or equivalent work experience

ASW certification preferred, however, not required

Large scale industrial experience. Marine/shipyard/ship repair experience preferred, however, not required

Experience with computers/electronics preferred

Ability to read blueprints

Ability to work standing on a variety of surfaces including steel decks and concrete for 8-12 hours per day

Ability to work overtime, evenings, weekends, and holidays

Perform work in heavy industrial/shipyard setting with exposure to heat, cold, and humidity, industrial odors, fumes, gasses, chemicals, oil, grease, smoke, dust, noise, and vibration, and involves climbing ladders and stairs, using pneumatic tools, working in cramped quarters, and working with moving machinery

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required for this position, including hearing protection, safety glasses, safety boots with metatarsal guards, face shield, welding helmet, welding gloves, welding sleeves/jacket (leather or cloth), and welding apron/chaps. A respirator may also be required

Qualification/Requirements:

Must show proof of your legal right to work in the United States

This position requires US Citizenship due to security clearance required for base access

Must be able to successfully obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)

Must be able to successfully obtain a Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) Credential to gain access to federally controlled work sites
