THE SHOWBOAT PUB IN WATERFORD
Penrose Lane was known locally as Dennys Lane and it was the scene of the 1896-67 Pig strike. Pig traders/buyers based in the Ballybricken area had a local monopoly on buying from farmers in order to supply local bacon producers

Chapter 93: A World Richer And Fuller
Empress Valka Zephyr Haddock II (November 3, AD 1042-December 30, AD 1131): First titled Empress elected to the Imperial Council of the unified North Sea Empire.  Firstborn child of Hiccup and Astrid Haddock.  Much like the rest of her extended family, the actual details of her life, while well-documented, have been embellished over the centuries to the point of near-absurdity.  This is not helped by the fact that her actual accomplishments, much like those of her parents, offer a starting point already suitable for high drama and adventure.  For one extremely well-known example, while she was indeed the undisputed leader of her cohort of children, including her future husband Emperor Olaf III, and while it is also true that the Haddock siblings, their cousins and their friends were the first Norse to see the famous Niagagarega Waterfalls of the Vestrilands, the famous and nigh-ubiquitous story of the dragon race down the length of the Ongtupqa Canyon is completely false…

Edward Despenser was fortunate in making a prosperous marriage to a tenacious businesswoman. Elizabeth (de Burghersh) was skilled at upholding her rights on the estates and worked hard to protect the lands of her two-year old son after Edward's premature death in 1375. There is abundant evidence of her willingness to maintain, even augment, the enormous Despenser inheritance and she combined shrewd business acumen with a clear awareness of the problems that a long minority could bring. This was a time when widows, as well as wives left at home during military campaigns, needed to be able to manage property. The French noblewoman Christine de PiZan wrote in The Treasure of the City of Ladies of the need for preparation for this task- 'they should have the responsibility of the administration and know how to make use of their revenues and possessions ... [and] they will be good managers of their estates'. It was a call for female entrepreneurs, and Elizabeth Despenser was a woman after Christine de Pizan's heart. The trust that her husband placed in her is made apparent by his choice to remain in Italy when Bartholomew Burghersh died, trusting his wife to look after the enlarged patrimony. Ten Suffolk manors fell to the Despensers - Carlton, Middleton, Clopton, Little WeInetham, Blaxhall, Swilland, Witnesham, Cock-field, FenhaH and Chesilford - together with Ewyas (Heref.) and Bosworth (Leics. ), and the patrimony was greater than it had ever been.
After Edward's death Elizabeth vigorously pursued lands farmed out by the crown and within five years recovered control of Shipton, Burford, Sherston, Kimberworth, Caversham and Great Marlow, collectively worth over £100 per year. She also obtained seisin of lands of her Despenser relatives, Gilbert (d. 1382), and Thomas, her brother-in-law (d. 1381). From Gilbert came the keeping of Broadtown (Wilts.); from Thomas various Lincolnshire lands and two-thirds of the manor of Mapledurwell (Hants.), which she later demised to her esquire Henry Yakesley. Via her daughter Anne, married to Hugh Hastings, came the Norfolk manors of Gressenhall and East Lexham. In 1392 Elizabeth obtained the wardship of Peter Veel after the death of his mother Eleanor, a tenant of the Despensers in Glamorgan. She held onto this as long as she was able, and it was fully ten years later when Henry IV ordered her to release the lands to the heir. In the meantime, Elizabeth had convinced Richard II to re-grant the Irish manor of Killoran, county Waterford, that had originally been held by her husband. At the same time, she had to contend with paying out two major annual sums. The first came in 1378 when £200 from the farm of Glamorgan was ordered to be paid to Sir Degary Says. Says had sustained losses in Aquitaine and also made forced loans of gold to the crown for the upkeep of the English armies, and King Richard's regency council decided that recompense should be made from the Despenser estates. The second came two years later, when Edmund earl of Cambridge, son of King Edward III, was awarded Thomas Despenser's wardship and 500 marks per annum. from Elizabeth's dower lands. Shortly before his death Edward Despenser spent his final military campaign in Brittany with the earl and it is possible that an arrangement was made at this time about Thomas's guardian. In 1384 Richard II gave permission for Thomas and the earl's daughter Constance to be married, and Elizabeth was then required to pay for her daughter-in-law's upkeep. Some idea of the considerable annual turnover of the Despenser estates may be found from documents dated between April and October 1391, where expenditure on annuities alone totalled 1016 marks (£677 6s 8d).
Elizabeth was vital to the continuing presence of the family in the last quarter of the century. Had she remarried after 1375, her dower lands would have been demised to her new husband and the Despenser inheritance impoverished. As it turned out, the ease with which Thomas took over the estates owed everything to her tireless efforts. She continued to pay annuities owed to members of Edward Despenser's retinue, and the fact that a number of these men served the family throughout this period tells us much about the advantages of continuity in estate management. We know that she held court in Glamorgan in 1393, and doubtless did so on other occasions. Her name also appears on two charters of 1397 confirming the privileges of the burgesses of Cardiff and Neath. However, Elizabeth's longevity was eventually to cause problems for Thomas who never enjoyed full possession of his inheritance. When he died at Bristol in 1400 she was still in possession of her dower as well as her own Burghersh inheritance. Other properties, such as Mapledurwell, had been safeguarded through grants to retainers or were held by cadet branches of the family. Only after Richard Despenser's early death in 1414 was the entire inheritance reunited under his sister Isabel and her first husband Richard earl of Worcester. The survival of the patrimony was due in no small part to Elizabeth Despenser, whose efforts, in the context of incessant Marcher power struggles and the Glyn Dwr revolt of 1400-8, should not be underestimated. It is a testament to her ability in the eyes of successive kings that in 1375 and 1400, unlike in 1349, no royal justices were appointed in Glamorgan to hear pleas of the crown. Everything was left to the Despenser women. Like her earlier kinswoman Elizabeth de Burgh, Elizabeth Despenser proved the value of a dowager administrator.

House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 6 "Small folk" Thoughts
Just clarifying, these are my own thoughts, you don't like them, don't bother telling me so. Also, I'm not a book purist, I like adaptions taking putting their own spin on things - if it makes sense to do so. So, here were my thoughts. Obvs, this post is dark and full of spoilers.
Am I sad to say I was excited to see House Lefford? Give us more houses.
Jason ordering Aemond to come to him, it's just... my guy do you know Aemond? Are you serious?
Alicent got her cumuppence at the Council. I'm loving Olivia's portrayal of her fear and unease around Aemond.
Another Red Kraken Mention!!
I like that they let Aemond be smart at the Council and it lays the ground for him leaving King's Landing.
Ewan Mitchell's lil mmms are such a great character tic
Alicent, you're giving Serena Joy Waterford and it's not a good look on you
Corlys taking his place as Hand, there's so much in it, you can see he's sort of like I got all the power I wanted but... The cost.
Oh great now we're just making up Targaryens. Ryan, wtf
Why didn't they use this as an opportunity to introduce the other Valyrian houses? House Celtigar?
PADDY
As glad as I am to see Viserys and Daemon scenes, I'm so done with Daemon at Harrenhal. Why couldn't we get him wandering the Riverlands actually doing something? Introducing new houses and such? New places?
Simon being so kind to Daemon, this isn't the first time that somebody went mad around him.
CARAXES MY BABY
These are the scenes we should have at Harrenhal, Daemon and Alys plotting and discussing magic
I loved the Seasmoke scene. You can really sense the awe in which they hold the dragons but also the true danger of them. It's something I never felt in GoT. Also Seasmoke was side-eyeing Steffon like one of the raptors in Jurassic Park, that man was going to be a snack from the outset
Jace shouting Mother as they watch Steffon burn... Oh the irony
Dyana scenes.
Slap that old man, Rhaenyra. Slap him
Rhaenyra and her sword = Visenya
Mysaria as Rhaenyra's mistress is so special to me. Canonically bisexual Rhaenyra.
Larys, you're about as subtle as a fart in church
Aegon and Aemond scenes. Ewan and Tom play them so well. Aegon holding the lil ball, remembering his lil boy
Rhaena is going to be Nettles. That's no Morning, no reason for Daemon to fight Aemond, nothing.
Oh lil Stormcloud 😍
Disliking Jeyne Arryn. Why did they do her as an expy if Lysa?
Also, how is Rhaena going for a walk in the Eyrie? Did they wynch them down for a jaunt?
The Gay Abandon 😭😭😭
Addam and Alyn discussing their dad. Why does Corlys not pay Addam any mind? What happened there?
Where is Marilda of Hull???
Jace giving Mysaria the "I'm not calling you mom look"
Alicent with Aegon, the miscommunication, ugh the tragedy
Gwayne being a good brother to Alicent, these are the relationships we want to see complicated but expressive
Daeron mention. He's kind. (tell that to Bitterbridge)
Both Hightower siblings looking at Criston like 👁️👁️
RIOT! RIOT! RIOT! EAT THE RICH
I love Helaena's fringe tiara.
Helaena's panic, Alicent defending her daughter. The SPIKES
It's the same carriage from Rhaenyra and Alicent's first scene, she still has it 😭
Daemon was hoping that kid killed his grandad, he was like "maybe that kid is alright"
#GETDAEMONOUTOFHARRENHAL2024
Seasmoke was choosing his own man like a mid-season Bridgerton
Seasmoke reminds me of my cat.
Apparently all dragons have stealth mode.
GAY WE GOT GAY
Rhaenyra's little "yes he does that" when they tell her about Seasmoke is me when my sister complains the cat is trying to sit on her shoulder.

The Carmarthen Youth Opera (Patron from 07.06.2010)
When the late Elizabeth Evans, MBE, joined the Furnace Gardens Further Education Centre as a youth leader, her passion for opera inspired her to channel the boundless energies of her young charges into putting on a show. In 1979 “Snow White” received glowing plaudits from both cast and the audience alike. This was the catalyst that inspired Elizabeth and her dedicated team of volunteers to form the Carmarthen Youth Opera the following year. The Education Centre thus became the Youth Opera’s first home. The annual productions continued to grow from strength to strength and in 1987 the company moved into and re-opened the Lyric Theatre in King Street, Carmarthen. It was transformed into the truly glorious theatre that is enjoyed by so many today. The Youth Opera continued to grow at pace, with the company making appearances at the London Palladium, Buxton Opera House and receiving curtain calls galore at the Waterford Music Festival. BBC Wales Television broadcast a documentary of the company’s redevelopment of the Lyric Theatre including the unforgettable production of “Jesus Christ Superstar”, performed in the most fitting setting of St. David’s Cathedral in Pembrokeshire. Many members of the company have gone on to become professionals in TV, Radio, Musical Theatre and Opera; the roll of honour includes well known names such as Mike Doyle , Mark Evans, Wynne Evans, Stephen Elias and Karen Evans. As well as developing the acting and singing talents of members, many have gone on to become successful stage managers, lighting and sound engineers, costume managers, script writers and even artistic directors. Following the retirement of Elizabeth Evans in 2005, Adrian Wyn Rowlands, an accomplished actor, singer and member of the company since 1982, took over the reigns as Artistic Director. Since then the Youth Opera has continued to achieve new heights of excellence; the Lyric resounding to wonderful performances of ‘Singin’ in the Rain’, ‘Oliver!’ and ‘The King and I”, with this year’s “Carousel” awarded the NODA Wales & Northern Ireland Region Best Youth Production, plus the Best Poster Award. In addition to the regular annual production, members of the company undertake a wide variety of performances throughout the year. The young cast’s virtuoso is displayed at fund-raising cabarets and charity concerts, including light entertainment at the prestigious opening of commercial enterprises. The cast are regularly given the opportunity to develop their talents at theatrical workshops and take part in an annual series of short-film productions in partnership with other youth companies in South Wales and in association with HTV Wales and various sponsoring bodies which include Carmarthenshire County Council.

Second Born
Tumblr media
This story was one of my offerings for #Kiara Theron Appreciation Week 2023, Day 4: Family/Friends/Relationships. It is later than usual (even by my standards), and I have no expectations for it to be added to any Masterlist other than mine.
The original idea was a collection of drabbles based upon a canon incident involving the Lady of House Theron that just has to affect /impact her, or at least I think it would. As is typical with my writing, the stories would be crafted with more head canon than actual canon.
I’m sticking with that premise, with one exception: instead of drabbles contained within one fic, I am breaking it out into five separate stories for two reasons: Instead of rushing through five stories, I can take my time with each one, hopefully providing more depth and context;  and it provides Kiara content at various times throughout the year (why should MC and main LIs have all the fun?).
Starting off with Second Born, a Liara story exploring Kiara’s initial reactions and responses to her brother Ezekiel renouncing the Castelsarreillan Dukeship.
Huge thanks to @lizzybeth1986 and @sazanes for hosting this event and THANK YOU to all who will read this story. Your likes, comments, and reblogs are appreciated more than you know!
Please excuse any and all typos, missing/extraneous words, and/or grammatical errors. MS Editor rates this fic as 99% error-free.

House Theron, Duchy of Castelsarreillan
Kiara Theron stalked across her Great House’s grand foyer, her stiletto heels tapping sharply against silver-veined black marble. Her arms were held tightly to her side, her hands clenched into fists. Her lips were pressed into a thin line; her hair bounced in the space between her shoulder blades.
“Lady Kiara!”
The hushed shout echoed softly throughout the large space; Kiara ignored it as she disappeared into one of several formal dining rooms. As she stalked through the room, her eyes critically surveyed the dining table, properly set with Wedgewood china and Waterford crystal while it awaited occupants and lunch.
When her follower arrived, he pushed the door partly shut; it allowed them a semblance of privacy while still adhering to propriety. The room was incredibly large, rivaling that of any in the Palace; he found himself seeking Kiara out, finding her staring out a curtained French window, her eyes trained on the group still chatting on the front steps.
“Kiara,” King Liam murmured in her ear. “Love, what’s wrong?”
The Lady of House Theron stamped her foot against the cherrywood floor as she whirled to face her lover.
“YOU KNOW what’s wrong! You were there!”
She placed her palms flat against his shirt-covered chest, lightly pushing him. Liam didn’t move.
“How … how Ezekiel could announce in front of the ENTIRE royal entourage that he’s abdicating the Dukeship before telling me and our parents? And then my parents APPROVING of it!”
Liam stepped back slightly, studying his lover attentively. “I would think being named Duchess of Castelsarreillan would be cause for celebration and congratulations, not wrath and consternation.”
Kiara took a few steps away before slowly sitting in a dining chair, her lips pushed to the side as she exhaled a frustrated breath. She tilted her head up to meet the monarch’s gaze.
“I don’t want to be Duchess. I am the second-born, which means … or meant I was free to pursue my own path. Ownership of a duchy and ruling over its citizens was not a part of that!”
Liam sat in the chair next to her, the palm of his hand covering the top of hers.
“As trite and overused as the phrase is, you were bred for this. You’ve always been House Theron’s representative. At Council meetings, at galas and charity functions. Frankly, I believe all of Court had forgotten Ezekiel was next in the line of succession.”
“I was the ambassador for my house! NOT the heir apparent,” Kiara huffed, snatching her hand away before dropping her face into her palms. “I don’t want to be permanently tied to Cordonia! There’s entire world beyond our borders, and I want to see it. The only reason I’m here right now is because I agreed to an arrangement with you.”
She glanced quickly at Liam, but his expression was neutral. “That sounds horrible, but you know my heart is in travel, negotiations, and languages. Eventually, a UN ambassadorship! It always has been, and now that I have the opportunity to put my education and training to good use … I can’t because Ezekiel wants to be a VETERINARIAN!”
Tears of frustration welled in the corners of her eyes.
“Veterinary medicine is an honorable profession,” Liam replied slowly, unsure if he were adding gasoline to the fire.
“HE DOESN’T WANT TO BE A VETERINARIAN!” Kiara yelled. Her fist pounded the table. “A lifelong dream that NO ONE KNEW ABOUT, he just blurts out in front of EVERYONE?” She shook her head vigorously. “No, that was just to impress Penelope. He simply doesn’t want to be Duke!”
Liam nods slowly. “Much like Leo didn’t want to be King.”
“But why?” Kiara’s question was strangled, as if her frustration and anger were lodged in her throat, choking her. “Why do they get to do as they please? How do they get to shirk responsibility? And why is it automatically presumed that the second-born child will just be held accountable for someone else’s duty?”
Quiet as Liam pondered an answer. He cleared his throat after a few moments before speaking.
“We’re called spares for a reason. In our circles, birth order determines who is the chosen one; it doesn’t always mean that they are the correct one for the responsibility that comes with governance. The entire purpose of leadership is to push forward in a positive direction with a propensity towards betterment. For all. That requires a level of service that not many have, a selflessness that must be constantly cultivated, an objectivity.
“I wasn’t happy when Leo abdicated, but I knew I would step up. Not because I had to, but because I wanted to. Same as you, I was taught and groomed to be the representative, and much like you … I enjoyed it for the fact that it was a temporary thing. And when it became permanent, I still enjoyed it. Unlike you, I didn’t have any plans towards a future endeavor. I found myself, my purpose when Leo stepped down.”
Kiara’s eyes searched Liam’s; they were calm, clear, accepting of his situation.
“What if I don’t want to do it?” she asks softly, plaintively.
“You don’t have to. You can refuse, and upon your parents’ deaths, the duchy reverts to the Crown’s ownership, to be bestowed or sold at the ruling monarch’s discretion.”
Kiara processed Liam’s statement. Castelsarreillan had belonged to Theron lineage for centuries, multiple centuries. Back to a time there was no Cordonia, and the primitive land was filled with magic and legends. That fact raised her ire even more: It wasn’t on her to ensure that the family line retain it a century more.
And yet, now it was.
“What if … what if there are children? Future heirs to the duchy?”
Liam shakes his head. “You know as well as I do that a renunciation or refusal to assume the position offered is absolute. Of course, provisions can be made for the last of a bloodline; in this scenario, that would apply to Ezekiel only. “
“Because I’m a woman, and any children I would bear would only carry my blood and not the Theron name.” Kiara finished Liam’s thought in a tone laced with both annoyance and resignation.
Her lover shrugged his broad shoulders; the Lady lightly licked her lips at seeing how his frame perfectly fit his suit jacket. “I don’t make the rules.”
This elicited a small chuckle from Kiara. “You’re the KING! Of course you do!” She lightly swatted his upper arm; her fingertips lingered at the feel of defined muscle.
Liam flashed her a small smile before chewing on his lower lip, a tell that he was contemplating something.
“You do realize that the ascension would not be immediate. Your parents are both fairly young and in good health. The paperwork is merely a formality, securing the line of succession. You would have many years to pursue your goals and ambitions. And being a Duchess wouldn’t restrict you from having a career.”
The slam of the front entry doors alerted the pair that the others were preparing to join them. Kiara stared silently at the ivory-colored soup bowl, its edges rimmed with a 24-carat gold band.
“I know that; it’s just that it makes me feel as if I’ve run out of time. That my hopes, dreams, goals are now on some accelerated schedule, and I have to rush through my life to live with another’s life choice. And for what? If something does develop between Zeke and Penelope, he becomes a Duke regardless.”
She swallowed heavily as her fingertip idly traced the bowl’s golden ring.
“I just can’t help but wonder if Leo and Ezekiel realize that their actions, aside from being the largest dereliction of duty, alters the trajectory of history.”
Liam leaned in closer to Kiara, smelling her hair and inhaling her scent for the briefest of moments before drawing away as chatter and footsteps drew closer.
“Or they’ve given us a chance to make history.”

Judge, Jury, Executioner
Folks:
Lets take a moment to rejoice over the momentum of Nick's growing power.
S1: He's always snitched on evil commanders. He was in with the Eyes on the ground level. But it was secret. He was a plain clothes spy. Didn't even get to see the Eyes arrest his marks :(
S2: Nick actually gets to watch The Eyes arrest Cushing. But it was still secret. He orchestrated Cushing's murder, by forging Fred's signature at Serena's behest. Poor kid had to pretend he wasn't involved.
S3: Nick's adult plumage starts growing in when he spends the night holding Fred Waterford at Gunpoint so baby mama can escape. Doesn't kill him but could have. Felt like a turning point. Fred gives him a fucking promotion like the cuckold and fool he is. What a fucking loser.
S4: Nick arrests Fred HIMSELF. Gives the Eyes the order- with his own voice. In person. The killing was off in No Man's Land, tho. Still kind of secret. Not official sanctioned Gilead business, but Nick got to pistol whip Fred before letting June tear him to shreds.
S5: Nick Blaine calls a special session of the Gilead council. Presents evidence he gathered. His witnessed account of a commander breaking his own rules. Gives the Eyes the order to collect Putnam and put him on his knees. EXECUTES THE MOTHERFUCKER IN BROAD DAYLIGHT with his OWN GUN. Like a scene out of a Tarantino movie.
Like.
We have come a LONG way from the nervous fidgety lawn boy.
And we still have a season left.
SO FUCKING EXCITED

#OTD in 1170 – Diarmait Mac Murchada and the Normans march on the Norse kingdom of Dublin, avoiding an Irish force that awaits them to the south of it.
Dublin falls to them on this date. Some Norsemen, including the king of Dublin, Ascall mac Ragnaill, flee to the Hebrides or the Isle of Man. The Normans and Diarmait held a council of war at Waterford and agreed to take Dublin. High King Ruaidrí deployed a large army near Dublin to intercept them. As well as soldiers from Connacht, it included troops from Breffny (led by King Tigernán), Meath…

Cars, corruption, and inept cops: A tale of the Newfoundland T'Railway.
Let's talk about the Newfoundland T'Railway.
For most of you that don't know, the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador is the bit inside the red dotted line.
Tumblr media
The southern island is the island of Newfoundland.
Newfoundland used to have a railway. Used to. It doesn't any more (TL;DL, corruption and capitalism).
Having closed down the railway, confining Newfoundland to a typical North American car centrism, it was converted into a trail. Hence, T'Railway. I'd rather have a railway, but a good trail is a nice thing to have. Big cloud; small silver lining.
Tumblr media
Now, this is Newfoundland. Which means for much of its length it is used as an ATV highway. In the Metro St. John's area ATVs are banned from the T'Railway, leaving it free to be enjoyed by pedestrians and cyclists alike.
Tumblr media
And enjoy it they do. I very much enjoy walking the Bowring Park to Downtown section of it on nice days. A friend of mine uses it to commute by bike all summer. It's a pleasant and easy walk, mostly flat, and somewhat protected at most road crossings by signs like this one.
Tumblr media
That is, until you reach the crossing with Southside Road.
Tumblr media
Here there is no sign. Worse, an access road has been built and paved.
Tumblr media
Walk a little further down the trailway and it becomes clear why. Some asshole has built their garage into the back of their house, 'requiring' car access along the T'Railway.
Tumblr media
A little further and we have a house which has also built parking 'requiring' car access along the T'Railway.
Tumblr media
Just past the above house we finally have our "No Cars" sign.
Tumblr media
How did the owners of that blue house get this sign placed just far enough along a pedestrian trail to allow them to use it as a driveway? What nepotistic connection did they have on the council at the time?
Still, the sign is there. Cars are once again banned and pedestrians and cyclists are both free to use the path safely...
Tumblr media
Hmmm. How did that seadoo get there? It sure didn't travel up the (very shallow) Waterford River. Based on the garage just past it, it's very clear that the owner of this house drove past the "No Cars" sign to desposit it.
If you keep walking, you see this.
Tumblr media
Some asshat has driven their giant SUV along the expressly pedestrian/cycle path to the garage they've built. The garage that can only be accessed by driving illegally along a pedestrian/cycle path.
The very next house has also built themselves some parking that can only be accessed by driving illegally along a pedestrian/cycle path.
Tumblr media
A little further along we have a trailer. A trailer in a location that can only be accessed by driving illegally along a pedestrian/cycle path.
Tumblr media
Finally, approximately 200m after crossing Southside Road, we stop seeing blatant evidence of illegal driving. And, presumably, we as pedestrians and/or cyclists can once again use the trail safely. Maybe. If car drivers decide that laws apply to them today.
The houses that got the "No Cars" sign placed partway along the trail don't surprise me; nepotism is rife in this province. Everyone knows it, everyone complains about it, and nothing is ever done about it.
What I want to know is how the houses past that sign can get away with illegally driving along a pedestrian/cycle path. There's no attempt to hide what they're doing. There's no sense that they aren't perfectly within their right to ignore the rules because they are car owners. There's not even an inkling that someone might think of enforcing the rules they're flagrantly breaking.
Fuck everything that's not a car, apparently.

Brooksville Woman's Club Honors Ten Local Women with Life Palettes Exhibit Sept. 26
Tumblr media
The GFWC Historic Brooksville Woman's Club has just kicked off its 114th year and is celebrating with an art exhibit honoring ten Hernando County women who contributed greatly to the area by founding organizations that still impact us today.  It is called the Life Palette Project. The exhibit was inspired by a Waterford, Pennsylvania palette exhibit in which oversized artist paint palettes were constructed from plywood and then commissioned to be painted with local scenes or artist visions by local artists. The concept seemed a good match for the Brooksville Woman's Club, which has a tradition of fostering arts and culture as one of its core pillars from the organization’s beginning.  Life Palettes Exhibit hopes to Showcase the Contributions of Local Women in Art at GFWC Brooksville Woman's Club “I settled on the name Life Palettes because the paintings are intended to capture the essence of the honoree's passions and interests in life.  They are shaped like artist palettes, and I like to imagine each woman crafting out her own legacy in the same way an artist uses their palette to create a painting,” explains Natalie Kahler, current President of the GFWC Historic Brooksville Woman’s Club. The Life Palette Project also provided an unexpected way to showcase the varied and remarkable work of several influential women in our community over the years. Each of the ten influential woman honorees was selected by the Woman’s Club officers. Next, local artists were selected, with the help of the Hernando County Fine Arts Council, to visually honor each woman’s life and contributions to the community. Eleven extraordinary artists paint the lives of ten extraordinary women in the Life Palettes Project put on by the GFWC Brooksville Woman's Club. Images courtesy of GFWC Brooksville Woman's Club. Capturing a Woman's Contributions to the Hernando County Community in Art The chosen artists were given 4’ x 6’ plywood cut in the shape of art palettes by local crafter, Forrester Made.  Each artist was provided research on the woman they'd been assigned and was given free rein to create a piece of art representing the accomplishments of that woman.  However, their palette was not to include a portrait of the woman being represented. The Brooksville Woman’s Club officers began with a long list of eligible women. They decided to focus on women who founded initiatives, projects, and companies that had a large impact on the local community.  The first "test" palette was created by Johan Casadiego. The first palette showed the many contributions of Margaret "Weenie" Rogers Ghiotto.  Weenie is best known for founding Rogers' Christmas House, Brooksville's most famous store for decades. The Christmas House attracted visitors from around the world!  Jan Knowles, one of the ten honorees for the GFWC Brooksville Woman's Club Life Palette's exhibit seen here talking with Brooksville Councilman, Frankie Burnett on the porch at the Chinsegut Hill Historic Site manor home. Image by Diane Bedard. Margaret "Weenie" Rogers Ghiotto's Contributions are Captured in the First Life Palette by Artist Johan Casadiego Beyond her extraordinary retail career, Weenie Rogers also renovated many of the historic homes on Olive Street and planted thousands of dogwood trees in the City. She became the second female member of Brooksville’s City Council - nearly 50 years after Lena Hawkins had been the first! Johan's beautiful palette painting was used to show potential sponsors and artists the kind of painting the Club was looking for and has been a great source of inspiration to many.    The ten honorees whose accomplishments and contributions are being memorialized in this exhibit have contributed to Hernando County in a wide variety of ways:  - Virginia Jackson founded the Hernando Historic Museum Association - Bertha Hancock Ashbrook helped establish the first library and served as the first librarian - Mable Sims wrote and curated "History on Wheels" as a traveling black history museum - Adeline Burnside Chelf established the Brooksville Woman's Club - Jan Knowles has been president of more than 10 community organizations and assisted in founding many of them. You can find out about the other honorees and their work by following the Brooksville Woman’s Club Facebook page.  Each week, three more honorees will be revealed. Come out to the Brooksville Woman's Club on September 26 to view each of the Life Palette's. Image by Diane Bedard. Come out to Celebrate the Life Palette Exhibit’s Reveal September 26 The paintings will be unveiled at the GFWC Historic Brooksville Woman's Club on Thursday, September 26.  At 6 pm, artists, honoree family members, sponsors, and VIP ticket purchasers will get to see each painting unveiled individually. Then the exhibit will be opened to the public from 6:30-8:30 pm.  In addition to each Life Palette, attendees will be treated to a poster that explains each woman's accomplishments and can view artifacts at the exhibit representing their efforts. Following the exhibit opening, the palettes will be hung in area businesses through the end of the year and then auctioned off to help pay for next year's round.  For our 115th year, the Brooksville Woman's Club is hoping to commission 50 palette paintings and make it an annual event. By honoring these women, the Brooksville Woman’s Club hopes the Life Palettes exhibit will inspire this generation of leaders to dream and implement ways to make our community stronger.  The exhibit shows that no matter how long you've lived here, whatever your past, regardless of your personal resources, everyone can make a difference if they commit to doing so. Sentenced to Death: Saved from the Gallows
Tumblr media
Colm Wallace has written a book “Sentenced to Death: Saved from the Gallows” about thirty Irish men and women who had the death penalty imposed on them between 1922 and 1985. Here’s his guest blog post on one of the cases: By February William O’Shea had been married to his wife Maureen for three years, although he was aged just 24 and she was 21. At this point the couple were blessed with a baby girl, the young family living together in a nice cottage in Ballyhane, outside Cappoquin. Instead of being at the start of a happy matrimony and enjoying parenthood however, O’Shea seemed to resent his wife. She, in turn, was afraid of him. William O’Shea may not have been a devoted husband but he did earn a living by working for Waterford County Council doing odd jobs and was also considered good at trapping rabbits. It was early 1943 that he had begun to spend a lot of time with a 17-year old local youth by the name of Thomas White, despite the significant age gap. White, who it would be later ascertained was mentally subnormal, frequented the O’Shea household and Maureen did not approve of the amount of time he and her husband spent together. On 22 February, Thomas White came to the O’Shea household to enquire about a pair of shoes. William was absent from the house so White conversed with his wife, before leaving several minutes later. The young mother then went to bed with her young infant and was on the verge of sleep when she smelled the unmistakable odour of smoke. The thatch of the cottage had suddenly gone up in flames and the occupants made a hasty exit. Maureen and the child were fortunate to escape with their lives. The young bride’s family did not, however, believe that the fire was a terrible accident. Maureen had already begun to think that O’Shea and White had ideas about killing her and had informed her family of her suspicions. Maureen’s stepfather even accosted William O’Shea, insisting that the fire had not been accidental. O’Shea did not respond but his wife tellingly remarked “Oh well, they want to get rid of me, and the baby, and I suppose they will get me yet.” William O’Shea and his wife were forced to live in O’Shea’s mother’s house after the fire had made their cottage uninhabitable. On 15 March, three weeks after the blaze, O’Shea returned home from work at 6pm as was his normal routine. After dinner, he uncharacteristically invited his wife on an evening stroll. She agreed and the pair left the house. As they were walking arm-in-arm in Knockyoolahan, a townland close to their home, a shot rang out without warning. Maureen slumped to the ground. The gun, a firearms expert would later testify, was only a couple of inches behind the unfortunate woman when the shot had been fired. Instead of staying with his dying wife, William O’Shea left her lying on the road and ran to his mother’s house. He was in the house for several minutes without mentioning the horrific incident that had just occurred. Finally when his mother inquired as to Maureen’s whereabouts he told her that his wife had been shot. When asked why by his panicked mother he hadn’t stayed by her side, O’Shea replied “I couldn’t bear it.”  By the time she was discovered it was too late, the Maureen O’Shea having died from the shotgun wound. When the deceased woman’s family were informed about the tragedy they were far from being sympathetic, the stepfather openly voicing his suspicions. He said accusingly to O’Shea “You were after spilling blood tonight, my boy,” O’Shea reacted by jumping from his chair and saying “Do you think I shot her?” He made no denial of the charge, however. The Gardaí were quick to act on the suspicion. Later that night, they went to the house were Thomas White was staying and discovered a shotgun under the bed. On 16th March O’Shea was summoned to the station in Cappoquin. Almost immediately he complained bitterly about his recently deceased betrothed: “My wife has been at me since about the first week of our marriage. Anybody that used to come in she used to be fighting with them”.  Later in the statement he admitted that White burned his house. “White said that he would do it, but I was not sure he would. He told me he set fire to the back of the thatch…he was disappointed she had not been caught in it.” O’Shea also knew that White had fired the fatal shot. He said in his statement that White had said “If we could get a cartridge we could shoot her…I knew it was Tommy White that had fired the shot because we had arranged that he do it.” O’Shea went on to confess that when he felt his wife going down he whispered an act of contrition gently in her ear. In a later statement, O’Shea admitted that White had told him that the signal he was about to shoot Maureen would be a tap on the shoulder. O’Shea and White were tried jointly, the case beginning in Green Street, Dublin, on 7 June. Thomas White’s counsel immediately asked if the jury could rule on the sanity of their client, the judge granting their request. Dr. John Dunne of Grangegorman Mental Hospital told the court that he been examining White in Mountjoy. His conclusion was that the prisoner was suffering from a mental deficiency and that he would be unable to follow the proceedings of the court. The jury retired for ten minutes before returning with a verdict of “not sane.” White was not fit to face the court and instead would be detained at the government’s pleasure. O’Shea thus faced trial for the murder of his wife alone. O’Shea had already confessed to conspiracy to murder. However, he sensationally withdrew his statement before the court case, complaining, “I never arranged to have my wife shot. I don’t even remember saying that. That is all I have to say”.  A crowd gathers outside Mountjoy Prison on O’Shea’s execution day. The defence Solicitor Mr Nolan-Whelan said that there was no evidence to suggest a conspiracy between O’Shea and White. O’Shea had no drinking problem and no motive. “A man does not murder his wife without a motive, unless he is insane,” continued the solicitor. He also declared that the statement made by his client was involuntary and made under duress. They also stated that there was a case for an insanity, one doctor declaring that O’Shea’s mental age was about seven years. The prosecution disagreed and contended that he was acting simply to fool the jury into declaring him unfit to stand trial. After the evidence the jury were given their chance to decide the truth. They needed fifty-five minutes to decide that the defendant was guilty of murder. O’Shea was visibly trembling and did not reply when asked if he anything to say. The judge told the jury he agreed thoroughly with their verdict before donning the black cap and sentencing O’Shea to be hanged. Several appeals were mounted against the sentence and the government cabinet of the day met to discuss a possible reprieve. In this case however, they chose to let justice run its course. Despite not firing a shot, William O’Shea was hanged in Mountjoy Prison on 12 August, 1943. He would be the only Waterford man to climb the scaffold in the history of Ireland’s independence. Time codes 0:59 - Flooding Ireland 1:47 - Tornado India 2:34 - Amazing phenomenon in China Ireland is sinking! A storm named Babbet caused flooding in Cork and Waterford today! Hundreds of homes and businesses were severely flooded after after parts of Colorado received more than a month's worth of rain in less than 24 hours during storm Babette. Storm Babett was the second biggest storm of the season, and the UK Meteorological Office said, that Yellow Severe Weather Warnings for wind and rain will be in place for most of the week. Local authorities report that they have not seen or heard of any flooding of this magnitude before. Heavy rain and high winds caused by Storm Babett have affected the entire country. Roads in Glanmire are impassable due to flooding, so caution is advised on the roads and Pope's Quay. The orange warning now extends to Kerry, Waterford, Wicklow and Wexford. Cork is also experiencing severe flooding, with several roads closed. An orange and yellow rain warning has also been issued for the southern coastal counties. Dangerous driving conditions and poor visibility. Cork County Council advise caution, stay indoors due to surface water and localized flooding. A mini-market and pharmacy in Blackpool have also been flooded. A statement from the Defense Force says personnel have been deployed to Midleton at the request of the local authority. It said transport and engineering assets could help transport people from the affected areas. Fianna Fáil Connor said financial assistance would be needed, and due to previous localized flooding many business owners were not offered flood insurance. A powerful tornado was observed at Marina Beach near Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. In the footage it is not very clear whether it is a water tornado that came ashore or a sand vortex that passed through the beach area. Nevertheless, vacationers were frightened, but there were no casualties, and the wind damaged only a couple of stores and beach equipment. The "eye of God" has been seen in the sky in China Residents of the Chinese urban district of Hulun Buir in Inner Mongolia witnessed an unusual phenomenon in the sky. The sun was in the center of a cloud shaped like an eye.

When the Health Sciences Centre's upcoming mental health and addictions facility opens, its emergency room will be integrated with the hospital's existing general emergency room.
Eastern Health says the decision to assess mental and physical health emergencies in the same emergency room was made, in part, to reduce stigma surrounding mental health services — but an advocate says the integration might make it more difficult for someone experiencing a mental health crisis to seek help.
Sarah Hillier, a mental health advocate in Churchill Falls, said she doesn't think combining emergency rooms is. "I do understand the kind of thought of, 'mental health is health.'"
Hillier, who has used mental health services at Waterford Hospital, said she might not have sought help if she'd had to report to a general emergency room. When seeking mental health help, a person often needs to advocate for themselves, she said — and even just getting to an emergency room can be difficult.
Being in that environment can be discouraging, and the process may lead to seeking mental health services. The integration of ERs to reduce stigma could backfire.
"Reducing stigma does not mean lumping everyone together," she said. "Reducing stigma means approaching it the way that it needs to be approached in a sensitive and timely manner."
But having the mental health facility at the main Health Sciences Centre, said Hillier, could help reduce the stigma of being admitted to Waterford Hospital, a dedicated psychiatric hospital.
When asked about Hillier's concerns, Patrick Whalen, Eastern Health's regional director of mental health and addictions, said "health is health." He said the regional health authority held significant consultations when planning the revised model, including with mental health advocates, individuals and families with experience in the mental health-care system, the Eastern Health client-family advisory council and clinicians.
"We brought that question to them: would they rather have a separate psychiatric assessment unit as part of the upcoming build or would they prefer to have this updated model, where we integrate into the Health Science emergency unit, which is being done nationally in other provinces?"
The consensus from those groups was to integrate the psychiatric assessment unit into general emergency services, he said. Whalen said patients would meet a triage nurse and register in a private area.
Daniel Parsons, Eastern Health's director of engineering and planning, said anyone undergoing a mental health crisis will not have to return to the main waiting area.
Whalen said the goal is to provide health care on an individual basis. This is rather than treating everybody the same, and if someone in the waiting room does not feel safe, the triage nurse can reassess a patient.
Parsons said Eastern Health hired a U.S. consultant to help the health authority with the ER design. "Their whole core business is how modern emergency functions and, you know, we have incorporated best practices and lessons learned from other emergency departments across Canada."
Parsons said the state-of-the-art mental health and addictions facility is on track to be completed by late 2024, with the psychiatric assessment unit scheduled for completion in early 2025.
