ok. Narrative obfuscation in House Of Leaves. It’s a relatively simple story about a man who moves into a house with his wife and kids, and the house is haunted. That’s it. The core themes are very transparent.
Except, that story is documented by a famous war documentarian, then published as a series of rare tapes, which are discoursed by film buffs, then interpreted from viewings and reading film critique by a blind old man, then his thoughts are transcribed into a manuscript by a series of young women, which is then compiled from scattered notes by the most mysoginistic, damaged, toxic pothead drop-out who won’t stop talking about his life, which is THEN edited and published by some vaguely nefarious agency who soberly refuse to provide any clarification or context.
It’s not simple, but there are so many different hands on the wheel with wildly differing opinions that you can’t discern the truth.
Johnny Truant is such a miserable hopeless fuck up. He has no sense of academic rigor or archival professionalism. Any interference he provides only muddies the waters and taints what would otherwise be a gripping piece of metaphysical film criticism. His neurotic rambling and personal anecdotes cloud an otherwise reasonable story.
If he wasn’t in it, if we could read Zampano’s manuscript directly, WE would be able to understand the truth. We would get it completely, and we wouldn’t have to encounter so much violence, so much miserable graphic detail. It would be a better story.
And fuck it, if we didn’t have to read all of Zampano’s tangents and analyses and interpretations, if we could just find a copy of the famous “five-and-a-half minute hallway” vhs, if we could SEE it, we’d understand. We wouldn’t need endless pontification of what Navidson and Karen’s marriage might entail, or recitations of what a director once said in a Rolling Stones article. We’d see the hallway itself, stretching out into what should be the backyard, and we’d get it. Hell, Zampano is blind in his old age. He can’t even watch the damn movie! But we could. We’d know instantly, the second we saw it. The impossibility of it, the gravity of it, the weight of that dark abyss.
And well, the VHS recording is a little dark, and the quality is poor, and maybe the white balance isn’t so perfect. And actually, VHs tapes could be manipulated. We can’t be sure that Navidson isn’t just using clever videography tricks to invent a hallway. If we were there, if we found the house (it’s in virginia, isn’t it? we even have the address). If we GO there, we could look down that hallway. And it’s dark, so if we just brought a flashlight, maybe took a few steps inside-

Plant native plants
What's up, northern hemisphere homies? Spring is coming and soon, many of you may be looking toward gardening. When you're deciding what to plant, I have two words for you to consider:
Native. Wildflowers.
There are huge benefits to planting native plants over store-bought plants.
Native plants are already adapted to the local soil. Lots of ornamental plants (especially lawn grass) pull nutrients out of the soil without giving anything back. Native plants are much better at supporting the nutrient cycle.
They are low-maintenance. Because native plants are already adapted to your local conditions, they need much less care and maintenance. You can save time and money on fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and water.
Native plants support the local ecosystem. The plants have evolved alongside with animals, meaning they feed local insects, birds, and other animals. They also provide shelter for wildlife, attract pollinators, and boost the local animal populations.
They increase biodiversity. In my country, huge swaths of native land have been bulldozed and replaced with ecologically damaging farmland, lawns, and non-native ornamental plants. By planting natives you help restore the ecological balance and can get an idea of what the land used to look like. Planting natives on your property can spread the seeds to other locations through wind or animal dispersal.
They are sustainable. You can harvest seeds off of your natives and grow your garden, give them to other people, or scatter them in the wild.
They are diverse and unique. How many gardens are full of the same old standards like peonies, daffodils, and tulips? Native plants often look much more unique and interesting than the same old ornamentals. Here are some local species from my area that I think are much better looking than a lot of ornamental cultivars. (top to bottom: prairie blazing star, showy tick trefoil, Virginia bluebell, dutchman's britches, bottle gentian).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Do some research about which species are local to your area and see if your local garden stores have any native species. A lot of places will have naturalist groups who will sell native plants or their seeds or can point you to places you can get them. You may be able to harvest seeds directly off the plant if there are natural areas near you. However if you are harvesting natural plants, check local laws and see who owns the property. The general rule of thumb is that for abundant native species, you can safely harvest about half of the seeds without impacting the regrowth next year. For rarer species, you shouldn't take more than a quarter. If a lot of people are harvesting in the same area, they may be taking too much.

Once upon a dream
Warning: mentions of pregnancy, mentions of cheating, mention of death, hurt comfort
Pairing: Emily Prentiss x Fem!reader, Tess Servopoulos x Fem!reader, Tess Servopoulos x Joel Miller
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only thing Emily ever wished for was a family, to be the mother she never had to two sons and a beautiful daughter always three children specifically.
Emily always had dreams of becoming a mother one day but it was never in her stack of cards so she shortly gave up the idea. Her dreams would always be just dreams not until she met Y/n, she was everything Emily had ever dreamed of in a spouse.
Only Y/n wasn’t hers
They had met at a local cafe after Emily had accidentally bumped right into her forgetting her coffee as she left in embarrassment. Y/n went straight after her with the drinks in hand never guessing she would end up at her brother’s workplace the bau.
“Y/n? What are you doing here?” Hotch asked confused Emily froze before turning around to face the woman. “You know each other?” She asked so unlike herself Penelope would’ve laughed Derek too “Aaron’s my older brother, you forgot your coffee” Y/n smiled.
Fast forward six years later
Emily going from blind date to hookup after hookup to get her mind off the now married woman who she still imagined a life with. Two sons and a beautiful daughter she told herself or even just one child would suffice maybe a cat if children wasn’t an option. She loved Y/n so violently it made her sick and everyone could see from a mile away- everyone besides Y/n although she loved Emily just as fiercely.
When Emily had “died” the other woman was inconsolable it damaged Aaron knowing he had a hand in this by not telling his sister the truth. Instead watching as the woman got married quickly to the first person who showed her simple kindness and their marriage seemed was almost out of convenience. Having met the woman while away trying to escape the life she once knew in Virginia moving to Boston and back again.
Y/n Hotchner became Y/n Servopoulos
Aaron couldn’t watch as his sister saw Emily for the first time once more after apparently being dead, how her hands trembled and eyes watered. The echo of her heels as she quickly left, Emily broke down that day one thing was certain nothing would ever be the same.
Y/n soon revealed she was pregnant with a little boy that shattered Emily’s entire world but she was happy for the woman. Though she couldn’t help but laugh when the baby was born looking just like his Uncle, to Emily Y/n was glowing and Tess well she was there.
Her son was named after an old friend Alex.
Theresa and Emily never got along always classed as competition in the other’s eye but they remained civil around Y/n never wanting to upset her. When Y/n was pregnant a second time Tess was around a whole less always giving Emily a chance to be by the pregnant woman’s side.
It was tough at first trying to win over the woman but Emily had her ways she would beg for Y/n’s forgiveness
A second boy named after his Uncle Aaron, Benjamin
Emily stood beside the woman until Ben turned two, Y/n and Tess were getting a divorce so Emily had the boys whenever she could. Tess had met someone while she was working away from home, some man named Joel from Texas. Joel Miller the same man who did the renovations on their holiday home who even had a daughter of his own.
It wouldn’t be until another year when a move would be made there was a routine the children had made that included Emily. You both would cook dinner- well you would cook and after spending time together you both would get the boys ready for bed and tuck them in. This night however as Ben snuggled into his pillow his little hand reached for Emily’s “stay mama” he yawned as the woman went to stand.
Tears spread on her waterline as she gazed down at him “of course my sweet boy” she smiled and once the kids were asleep you both retreated to the living room. Cuddling on the sofa watching some shitty reality tv show you gazed up at Emily “thank you” was whispered against her jaw. “What for?” She glanced down at you “for everything, for staying” soon enough your lips had met before you were on top straddling her.
Dreams slowly stopped being dreams another two years later when you and Emily had gotten married with just the team a few friends and your two sons as guests. Emily was over the moon to have a family to call her own, to have a reason to go home just knowing she was needed filled her with pride. Emily had gotten a taste of motherhood and she wanted more as you both laid bed post bliss she brought it up she wanted another child.
Two sons and a beautiful daughter
Her dreams were now reality as you welcomed Olivia into the world, Olivia Benson the Senior having to be the one to drive you to the hospital while Emily was away. She held your hand until your wife burst through the doors with the team behind her, you would birth a daughter who was the perfect mix of you both.
A little girl with Emily’s nose and eyes while she had your hair and mouth, Emily couldn’t help but pepper your face in kisses. “You did so well baby, I’m so proud of you” it made her think if she would ever be in this position if she hadn’t bumped into you that day.
Yes you were the bosses little sister but you had lead a similar life in a different town what if ran through her mind until she felt your cold hand on her cheek. She smiled brightly down at you as she leaned down to kiss you softly ignoring everyone in the room “thank you” she whispered.
“What for?” You chuckled tiredly with a dopey grin “our family” Emily held onto your free hand “I love you Y/n Prentiss” ignoring Hotch rolling his eyes fondly.
“I love you most Emily Prentiss”
Dreams do come true to those who wait Emily found.

Those Damn Hot Dogs
Chapter One of Therapy for the Well-Adjusted
My entire masterlist and blog are for readers 18+ MDNI. I do not consent to my work being used in AI, recommended on TikTok, borrowed or plagiarized.
Word Count: 1859
Warnings: Nerdie doesn’t know how the FBI works (despite watching all the crimes procedurals), one gun shot, insulting hot dogs 🌭, random book reference, a wee bit of blood, yelling & cursing
Summary: Marcus Pike was mandated to go to therapy. His journey there was very bumpy. We meet Dr. Mint and Vernon! (both OFCs)
Notes: I started this because I wanted Marcus to be a bit unhinged. Like why not? 😀
But also because I’ve had some bad experiences with therapy and some very positive ones.
Plus I enjoyed the doctor’s names way too much. I’m on my mess with puns. 😉
If you feel you need therapy or counseling, you should research the best cost effective options for you and make sure that your therapist is someone you feel comfortable with. Vibes are important in this case.

Marcus is talking with his therapist, Dr. Mint. He never thought he would need to see one. Not that people don’t need to see them or take their mental health seriously, they should and he does. He has to. He’s an FBI agent. Although he is in art crimes, there’s still quite a bit of shady characters, deals and crazy crap that people will do to have their art or hide how they got it.
The journey to Dr. Mint took Marcus two months from the incident to now.
The incident in question was something he never expected. Marcus Pike prided himself on being able to roll with life's punches, no matter how gut-wrenching they might be. Prior to ‘the incident’ his team were investigating possible pieces of art that were thought to have been smuggled into the country. Supposedly from California over to the East Coast. That should have been his first clue, the mention of that state. He was briefed about two consultants coming to assist since they had dealings and information of the particular ring of smugglers.
Patrick Jane and his wife Teresa Jane.
The amount of time Marcus had put into this case had been the last few months. Tracking leads, making connections, reviewing financials, flights, etc. He implored his superiors that they didn’t need their help. They’re making headway toward busting these guys without these two, especially one of them’s penchant for causing property damage and being a PR nightmare. The higher ups said that his team had enough time to find these guys and they haven’t so this case needs to be closed now. Pike didn’t understand the urgency, these were typical smugglers, not traffickers or people or drugs, but he had to back down. He would take many deep breaths and interact with them as little as possible.
Of course Patrick Jane asked to be on my team. The vest wearing, tired brown shoes having hot dog water looking bastard.
Agent Pike knew he’d have to grin and bear it. He’s a professional and a special agent. Unlike this prick, he can’t just do as he pleases. There are rules, regulations and he would like to stay gainfully employed at a job he loves. Patrick Jane nor his hot dog water loving wife Teresa will make him lose it.
The first two weeks went fine. Limited interaction, and all about the case. The third week was when they finally caught the smugglers at their warehouse. A mix of Marcus pulling up prior maps of an area outside of DC on the outskirts of the state of Virginia and Patrick seeing a pattern in pieces they were taking. The bust was running smoothly, all of them were caught except one. Marcus was chasing him and the idiot ‘not an actual agent’ Patrick decided he was somehow going to help chase the perp as well in those slippery ugly brown shoes.
It was his own fault.
Not Pike’s. He called in that he saw the suspect, let them know he was in pursuit and was chasing them. It was Jane that called himself trying to be some action hero popping out from a nearby alley to chase the same perp. Pike yelled at him to move, Patrick chose not to listen. His ass paid the price. Literally.
Some might have thought Marcus did it on purpose, especially if they knew the extremely sorted history between Patrick, Teresa and Marcus, but he truly did not. The suspect had pulled a gun and was trying to shoot Marcus, he dodged and shot the perp in the calf, disabling him enough for Pike to run over and clap cuffs on him. He then called for an ambulance.
Pike heard Patrick cursing as he was laying on the ground. Marcus thought maybe he just fell, but there was blood, not from the suspect. Jane was bleeding from his ass, the bullet had grazed him before hitting the suspect. Before Marcus could hold it in, and remain professional he laughed. Not a chuckle or snicker but a full, down on both knees next to the perp laugh. Which made the smuggler laugh as well. Teresa and the other agents made their way over and wondered what an agent and criminal could find so funny. Mrs. Hot Dog became hysterical that Patrick was bleeding so of course he leaned into it, shaking where he hadn’t been before.
Marcus and the suspect watched and looked at each other, “That’s some bullshit my guy.” Pike agreed. Standing up holding the suspect in front of him, he took him over to be booked and processed.
Patrick was taking his sweet time getting off the ground and Teresa was beginning to yell at Marcus, telling him that she’d have his badge for harming her Patrick.
Marcus Pike had enough. He requested to not have them in this case, asked to be reassigned, and has kept interactions to a minimum. He didn’t ask Patrick to chase a suspect. He’s a consultant. He’s not supposed to be doing it anyway!
Uncharacteristically, Marcus yelled and told Teresa to “keep her hot dog water looking man out of the way of FBI business. Had he not been here, the suspect wouldn’t have shot him. Jane needs to stay in his lane and keep all his hot dog foolishness over there.” Teresa was going to say something else, “You don’t say shit to me. You left me then, how am I supposed to know you’re going to do your damn job in the field if you didn’t even have the backbone to tell me no face to face or over the phone. You didn’t ask what actually happened! Put a bun on him to soak up his blood and hot dog water.”
Everyone was silent, even Jane.
No one expected Marcus to say anything, let alone admonishing Patrick and Teresa’s behavior. Everyone knew it was a lot but Pike had been a consummate professional during their entire time here.
Teresa was mortified and started to cry. Jane finally got up and limped over to the supervising agent who just told him to go over to the ambulance to get checked out.
No one directly addressed it, not until the Jane’s were gone and they threw a party. Marcus was invited but he declined. He’d been put out on administrative leave and was at home tuning his bass guitar. Wondering about what they said. They suggested he take some time off, cool his head and could come back after some counseling session.
Marcus had tried to go to the FBI one but it ended on a weird note. The initial meeting went well, but the small older woman asked for a hug. She said that Marcus resembled her former husband. He politely declined and told his supervisors that it wasn’t going to work with the FBI’s counselor.
Pike now had two weeks to find one he could see and clear him. His colleague Mark, suggested one that had helped him and his wife during a rough period in their marriage:
Dr. Mint of “Mint and Julep Counseling: Helping therapy go down smooth.”
The name and the tagline made Marcus chuckle and highly suspicious so he researched them, Mark vouched for the group of counselors and doctors. It’s worth a try. It had to be better than the last one.
Marcus wore his red flannel shirt, open exposing his white t-shirt underneath. Rubbing his hands on his dark wash jeans, getting the sweat off them, he opened the glass door leading into the reception area. The colors were neutral: white, tan, gold and gray. There was a friendly older gentleman at the desk who wore and striking green sweater and had bi-focals, peering at Marcus upward, maybe trying to look through the upper half of the glasses.
“Good afternoon sir, here for an appointment?”
“Yes I am. New patient for Dr. Mint. Marcus Pike. Nice to meet you sir.”
“Oh! You’re early, that’s nice. Wait there. Did you want some water? I’ll let them know you’re here. Should be finishing up with the previous patient shortly.” The gentleman informed him and Marcus took a seat on one of the black leather chairs.
He waited about ten minutes, he’d been fifteen minutes early. It was easier to find than he thought and it was in a stand alone building rather than in a strip mall. It was near a Panera and a Dunkin’s so Marcus had some landmarks for it.
Dr. Mint has sepia bangs which seems to be their natural hair color. The rest of their hair is cut close and is dyed a deep plum color. Normally Marcus might have taken a pause given that they’re also wearing a cream sweater that looks one size too big for them with black slacks and loafers, but they shake his hand and have a strong grip. Pike respects this and follows the good doctor to his office. The agent figures it can’t be worse than the last therapist. Dr. Mint is a few inches taller than Marcus but thin, willowy he might say. Something about him invokes trust, could be their sharp jaw and or that once they sit and Marcus begins talking about what happened with the two hot dogs, he sees something in their dark brown eyes that he didn’t with the other therapists. Dr. Mint didn’t think he’d lost his mind.
Pike’s luck has finally changed.
The doctor thanked Marcus for coming to see them and hoped that he would make a future appointment. They also stated that given the pressure he was under and the specific circumstances, they weren’t sure there was a right way to approach the situation.
“I mean, it is kinda funny. If you think about it, Dr. Mint.” Marcus departs their office and makes an appointment for later in the week with Vernon, the front desk gentleman. On his way out, he held the door for a woman in a cobalt dress, she thanked him and smiled. Pike felt his eyes linger on her for a few moments as she went to the desk and checked in with Vernon too. She sat down, crossing her legs at her ankles after setting her black tote back in a chair next to her. She was on her phone for a few and then pulled her bag into her lap, making herself smaller despite the waiting room being empty save for the man behind the desk.
Marcus wondered what brought her to this place, it could be anything. Her blue dress stuck out in his mind and he remembered there was a book about a woman in a blue dress, what was it called? He stopped to grab a salad and soup from Panera before heading home.
“Wait…” Marcus pulled into his parking space outside of his apartment building. “Devil in the blue dress, I think it’s by Walter Mosley. Wasn’t that a movie too? Maybe I should watch it tonight.” As tonight’s feature was decided, he set about trying to find which streaming service it would be on.
Marcus felt he made a good choice today.

The Legend of the Princess Augusta or the Palatine Ship
The legend goes back to the historic shipwreck of the Princess Augusta at Block Island in 1738. The ship is known from several contemporary accounts and from statements made by the surviving crew after the sinking, which were discovered in 1925 and reprinted in 1939. The British merchant ship Augusta sailed from Rotterdam in August 1738 under Captain George Long and a crew of fourteen, carrying 240 immigrants to the English colonies in America. The passengers were German Palatines who came from the Palatinate, which is why the ship was referred to as the "Palatine Ship" in contemporary documents, which explains the later confusion about the name. The ship was on its way to Philadelphia, from where the passengers were possibly travelling to a German-owned settlement on the James River in Virginia.
Tumblr media
The Burning Ship, by Albert Bierstadt 1869
The Princess Augusta's voyage was ill-fated: The water supply was contaminated, causing a "fever and flux disease" that killed 200 passengers and half the crew, including Captain Long. First Officer Andrew Brook took command when severe storms forced the ship off course to the north, where the survivors were exposed to extreme weather conditions and dwindling supplies for three months. According to the crew, Brook forced the passengers to pay for the remaining rations. Apparently he tried different routes to Rhode Island and Philadelphia, but the storms drove the damaged and leaking Augusta to Block Island. She ran aground in a snowstorm at Sandy Point at the northernmost end of the island at 2 p.m. on 27 December 1738.
According to reports, Brook rowed to shore with the entire crew and abandoned the passengers on board. The Block Islanders apparently did what they could to help. They convinced Brook to let the passengers disembark the next day, and later retrieved their belongings when he left them on board. They also buried about 20 people who died after the shipwreck; the Block Island Historical Society erected a memorial plaque at the site of the "Palatine Graves" in 1947.
The authorities took statements from the crew, but what happened afterwards is unclear. Apparently the crew was not charged for their actions, and they and most of the surviving passengers made it to the mainland, from where little is known about them. Two survivors remained on Block Island and settled there. Most reports indicate that the ship was deemed unsalvageable and was forced out to sea to sink. It may have been set on fire to sink it. According to some reports, a woman, sometimes referred to as Mary Van Der Line, was driven mad by her suffering; she was forgotten and sank with the ship, according to these reports. However, no remains of the wreck have ever been found, and there are indications that the Augusta may have been repaired and sent on to Philadelphia.
Tumblr media
There is a rich oral tradition of this event, and numerous sightings were reported in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The legend was immortalised by the poet John Greenleaf Whittier in "The Palatine", which faithfully reproduces the traditional story in verse. Which gave the Legend it's name. On Saturdays between Christmas and New Year's Eve, locals still sporadically report seeing a burning ship pass by. Folklorist Michael Bell, investigating the legend, found that almost a year after the incident, two versions of the night's events were circulated.
Tumblr media
The Palatine Graves
The Block Islanders insisted that their citizens had made a valiant attempt to rescue the crew, while the New England mainlanders suspected the islanders of having lured the ship to them in order to seize their cargo. Both legends agreed that a female passenger had refused to abandon ship when it sank, and those who claim to have witnessed her reappearance say that her screams were heard from the ship.
Today, a plaque at the Mohegan Bluffs where the ship is said to have run aground reads: Palatine Graves - 1738. Some claim that those who died that night are buried underground. However, Charlotte Taylor of the Rhode Island Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission has stated that no physical evidence has ever been found to support either this claim or the legend itself.

Sorry to see you leaving '76 for a while, but I can see why you did - have you done the Pitt sidequests there? I know it really depressed me, seeing the Union trying to turn the Pitt into a working city again, knowing how things are going to be in a couple of centuries
Yeah, I've taken Tessa out to the Pitt. That was a harrowing experience. From a gameplay perspective, I admit I found it a little disappointing. The endless level 100 bullet-sponge enemies weren't really fun to fight, they just made exploring extremely slow and frustrating. It just felt like another place where I was being punished for not really wanting to do the multiplayer thing. And I have never been able to complete the final optional objectives in either expedition. I don't know how one person is supposed to be in three places at once.
That said, the difficulty level really did hammer home how screwed the Unionists are.
Because, yeah, the Pitt is a grim tragedy from start to finish. Even at the end of the Fallout 3 DLC it's hard to feel like you've significantly bettered anyone's existence. My Fallout 3 character, Hope, very much does not have a good time there either.
It's not just "a couple of centuries", though. There's this, from the old Fallout 3 game guide:
The most disturbing change that the environment caused was not nearly as noticeable as the physical deformities. The infected water and poisoned sky began to cause neurological damage to those exposed to it. People became more hostile, violent, and short-tempered; they became known as "Wildmen." Their emotions became out of control, and their actions often teetered on primal. In severe cases, mutated humans devolved into hunched, savage beasts nicknamed "Trogs." Over the first 50 years, The Pitt quickly degenerated into a dangerous den of murderers and rapists; even cannibalism was not uncommon. The only loyalty was in strength, and the only organization was between those who were strong enough to control others and those who were controlled. Rumors of the horrors of The Pitt spread throughout the Wasteland, and all travelers knew to avoid it at all costs. However, The Pitt became one of the most self-sufficient communities in the Wastes. Granted, their self-sufficiency relied on the citizens occasionally eating one another, but they functioned without trade or export. – Fallout 3 (GOTY) Official Prima Guide, p. 44
Fifty years. It's currently 2105 in Fallout 76, some 28 years after the bombs fell. Within the next 32 years, the Pitt will collapse entirely into an isolated, gang-run slave state. The really distressing thing about those expeditions is that you're watching the collapse of a civilisation in real time.
The Unionists used to be doing better. They were relying on their manufacturing capabilities to produce unique resources for trade, which would allow them to clean up and rebuild their city. By the time you get there in Fallout 76, they've lost both the Foundry and the Sanctum, and they're clearly being backed into a corner. They never really recovered from the "Bloody Thursday" assault. There are forced labour camps up and running right now, and if you do the From Ashes to Fire quest Danilo repeatedly makes it clear that you're really only able to give a fraction of the slaves a chance to run. Tessa found a woman in the process of being walled up, and spent ages trying to see if the pickaxes would work to bring down the walls. They wouldn't.
They Unionists are losing. And they're going to keep on losing, no matter what you do.
What's worse is how utterly abandoned these people are. Skippy Roerich and Wernher are very different men with very different motives, but it's noteworthy that their stories, set centuries apart, start more or less the same way: they just walk out of their home state, and keep on walking, in the hope of finding someone, anyone, who is both willing and able to help.
Skippy walked out to West Virginia, which is apparently 367km. Wernher walked 402km to Washington DC. Those are, at least roughly, comparable journeys. That's how far a person has to get from the Pitt in order to bring back assistance. No one closer can or will do anything.
And the thing is? Skippy succeeded! He found a society in the process of rebuilding, and it had an aid organisation with access to an actual vertibird that could fly people and supplies back to the Pitt at least relatively quickly. We know they're doing that. They're sending supplies in, as well as the volunteer fighters that make up the expeditions.
But. Roll around to Fallout 3 and there's no sign of the Responders, or the Appalachian freedom fighters. There isn't any record or mention of them either.
Now, obviously Fallout 3 was made before Fallout 76 and you wouldn't expect them to have everything worked out ahead of time. But some things are clearly established in the timeline before there are games about them: there's a terminal entry in Fallout 3 describing Vault 76's status as a control vault, and the The Replicated Man quest established both the Institute and their synths – to the point that it was very common speculation that Fallout 4 would be set there and be about that well before there were any details about it.
What they establish in the Fallout 3 game guide is that the Pitt is completely isolated within 50 years of the Great War. So, for reasons unknown, the Appalachians are going to stop helping. And they're going to stop relatively soon. And then no one will help the slaves kept there again, at least until the Lone Wanderer may make the attempt in Fallout 3.
All the horrors you have to navigate your way around on those expeditions? The people they had chained down in bathtubs? The electric chairs? The cells? Walling people in like they're in a bloody Edgar Allan Poe story? All that is staying. Indefinitely. And we can add to it an infant mortality rate so high that they are "forced" to import slaves from elsewhere because the population can't otherwise sustain itself.
Yeah. The Pitt makes me very, very sad.

So check where you get your water if you live in any of the yellow counties.
-------------------------------
Affects Of Chemicals.
Chemicals spilt.
Vinyl Chloride
Butyl acrylate
Ethylhexyl acrylate.
---------------------
Vinyl Chloride
Vinyl Chloride has been linked too liver damage when exposed to between 300 and 500 ppm, it is a known carcinogen that causes a rare liver cancer to form.
The other two chemicals pose very little harm.
Should you be worried.
This is an ongoing situation but as of currently only very small traces amounts of Butyl Acrylate have been found in the Ohio river.
The overall danger is minimal.
If you receive your water directly from the Ohio river you can switch to bottled water for extra safety if you feel the need to.
I will personally be doing this.
But if your outside the Ohio river basin you have 0 worry and for those of us living here the only slight concern should be had if you water comes from the river or a river being fed by the Ohio river.
This is a continued situation and I will update it as new information comes out

Potentially concerning hc’s you say? :)
Both Texas and New York have fallen off of so much high up stuff that they no longer take fall damage (or, at least, they pay no mind to it when they probably should)
Loui’s lack of sleep causes him to dissociate a lot. So. Uh. Usually whenever the others think he’s really focusing on the meeting, he’s not even like. There.
Because I love the idea of Gov having snake features, since there was a rattlesnake on the "Don’t Tread On Me" flag, uhhh. He is in fact venomous. And yes he has the slit pupils and snake tongue and fangs.
Whatever West Virginia made in the new video has little to no affect on Loui unless he drinks more than 4 glasses of it. He beat Texas by one glass 😭💀
•7/10 for fall damage. Also 10/10 for sneaky (maybe accidental?) NY is a cat who lands on their feet reference
•10/10 concern Loui pls sleep-
•10/10 concern bc Florida would try to either eat him or keep him as a housepet no in-between.🐍
•100/10 CONCERN IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT LOUI DRINK WATER *meanwhile Texas is just dead on the ground and West Virginia is just staring at Loui like (;ŏ﹏ŏ)🍺*

What makes a state 'the least environmentally friendly? The United States is the world’s second-largest producer of greenhouse gas emissions. It is also one of the world’s most environmentally friendly countries. The Environmental Performance Index, or EPI, is a ranking of states based on their environmental performance. The ranking is based on 25 indicators that measure how well the state protects human health and ecosystems from environmental damage. States are ranked in descending order from most to least environmentally friendly. The top-ranked states have the lowest environmental risk. What Makes These States so Bad for the Environment? The United States is one of the most developed countries in the world, but some states are more developed than others. Some states have a lot of natural resources, while others don't. And that's a huge problem for the environment. Pollution is an all-encompassing term for any type of harmful, or potentially harmful substance that enters our air and water supply. The air we breathe and the water we drink can be polluted by smog from factories or by chemicals from toxic dumps. And it's not just what we breathe in or drink that can be polluted - our land can also be polluted with oil spills, mining waste, and pesticides. Some states are worse than others when it comes to pollution - they're either home to more factories or they have fewer regulations on how to protect their land and their people from pollution. The five least environmentally friendly states are Louisiana, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Wyoming, and North Dakota. Louisiana With the world on the brink of global warming, it's important that we take a step back and evaluate how our country is contributing to this disaster. According to the EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), Louisiana is one of the five least environmentally friendly states in America. This is largely due to the high amounts of pollution in the air from oil rigs, refineries, and factories. Louisiana also has more than 553 industrial sites operating without permits, as well as 10,000 active oil and gas rigs which contribute to asthma rates around the state. These factors have led Louisiana's air quality to reach levels of "hazardous" on average. Oklahoma The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has ranked Oklahoma as the least environmentally friendly state. According to their data, Oklahoma ranks poorly in all six categories that were evaluated: air quality, water quality, toxic chemicals, hazardous waste generation and disposal, recycling rates, and energy consumption. West Virginia West Virginia isn't the most environmentally friendly state as it's ranked 46th in terms of renewable energy and 49th in terms of carbon emissions per capita. They also have a low recycling rate of 27% which has led to an increase in coal mining despite their efforts to move away from this type of fossil fuel. WV has the most toxic waste sites in the US. Wyoming Wyoming produces approximately 30 billion pounds of waste per year. This state ranks as the least environmentally friendly in terms of pollution and land preservation. Wyoming is the least environmentally friendly in terms of pollution and land preservation. North Dakota. North Dakota is the least environmentally friendly state in the United States, according to an independent study by WalletHub. The study ranked all 50 states based on pollution and environmental quality, air quality, water quality, energy consumption, and climate change & global warming. Why is Environmental Sustainability Important? Environmental sustainability is important for the future of our planet. It's not just about reducing CO2 emissions and recycling waste. It's about looking at all aspects of our lives and trying to make them as sustainable as possible. The importance of environmental sustainability can be seen in many ways, one being the need for renewable energy sources. The demand for fossil fuels is going down and renewable energy sources are becoming more popular as they are a cleaner alternative.
The effects of climate change are also inescapable, with natural disasters becoming more common and powerful every year - like Hurricane Irma or Hurricane Maria which has recently hit Puerto Rico. There are many ways to improve environmental sustainability. The first step is to reduce waste in our homes, communities, and society. This can be done by recycling your glass, aluminum, and paper products. Another important step is to stop buying products that contain unsustainable materials like plastic or polystyrene foam. Every individual has a role in improving the environment we live in - it is only up to us as a society who will take action and make the changes needed for our planet to survive! What are Some Actions We Can Take to Improve Their Rankings? If you want to improve your environmental report card score, there are a few things that you can do. The first thing is to use more sustainable materials. This will help reduce the impact on the environment and make your company more environmentally conscious. Second, you can get rid of any toxic chemicals in your products. Third, you can reduce the amount of waste that is being produced by recycling and composting materials when possible. Finally, you can invest in energy efficiency projects to help save energy and money over time. There are a lot of ways to improve your grades on the environment report card. There are many things you can do to make your environment more sustainable and green. Some of these actions include: Reduce, reuse, recycle Eat less meat Use public transport or carpooling instead of driving alone Buy products made from recycled materials and avoid disposable plastics Switch to using reusable shopping bags

SENSES & OTHER SPECIFIC HEADCANONS.
tagged by: @ellevenie ( I'm sorry. I'm so sorry ) also I should mention a lot of this I discussed with @strtravels beforehand so i'd like to thank her for listening to me babble on. :))) tagging: no one. this got so far away from me !!! I'm not making anyone else read this just steal it if you want idk.
WHAT DOES KATE SMELL LIKE?
She tends to favour fragrances with fresh, more citrus scents and a hint of jasmine than anything else. She's not one for heavy amber or overly floral perfumes. For everyday wear, her favoured fragrance is L'Occitane's Jasmin & Bergamote. ( Top notes are Bergamot, Petitgrain and Mandarin Orange; middle notes are Egyptian Jasmine and Jasmine; base notes are Cedar and Sandalwood. ) For more special occasions, gala's and public events as well as date nights, etc her go to's are either Dolce's light blue ( Top Notes: Granny smith apple - Sicilian cedar - Bluebells. Heart Notes: Jasmine - White rose - Bamboo. Base Notes: Cedarwood - Amber - Musks.) or Armani's acqua di gioia ( Top notes: Amalfi Lemon and Mint; middle note is Water Jasmine; base notes are Virginia Cedar, Brown sugar and French labdanum ) In terms of how she applies it? She definitely abides by the old fashioned rule of dabbing it on your pulse points rather than spraying it on everywhere, Always a less is more kind of gal.
WHAT DO KATE HANDS FEEL LIKE?
Pre 2025: soft and french manicured. Nails kept short, occasionally paints them, always red when she does. She takes a certain amount of pride in her appearance and definitely abides by her skin care routine. Pre 2025 she does have a scar across her right palm, an injury sustained in 2015 while trying to save a group of new trainees from an invasion attack on HQ. Post 2025: work in the vulpreen camp, in addition to the torture she endured during that time has left her with callouses on both hands and two deep gashes over the length of her left wrist that have never healed completely over. she did manage to lessen the damage over time with treatment.
WHAT DOES KATE USUALLY EAT IN A DAY?
god she loves her meal prep sm. She learnt to cook from her mother. and later on, after she reconciled with her father, Doris taught her a thing or two too.
Breakfast: She sticks to the same schedule she's had since 1995, never changes and makes the kids follow it too. Something about consistency being good for them, and yes, breakfast is the most important meal of the day.The day's rotate, but the menu stays the same. Either marmalade on toast, yogurt with muesli and some sliced fruit ( usually bananas, peaches or strawberry. ) porridge with a drizzle of syrup ( yes there were tantrums when the kids were younger, yes she endured them calmly. ) or pancakes with fruit and a drizzle of honey. Saturday's are more of a sleep in day, so there's no real routine there, she'll normally make toast and the kids will have whatever they want. Sundays however, was a traditional uk breafast kind of day, a little tradition of her ex-wifes more than anyone else, that she still continues to this day.
Lunch: depends on what she had for breakfast. if she had toast she's not having a sandwich, you get the point. usually, she'll always take a packed lunch, loved to eat it on the bench overlooking the Thames. Usually a salad of some sort or either egg and cress, cheese and tomato or chicken lettuce and mayo sandwiches on rye. Or soup on a cold day. Occasionally leftovers too. It's a much easier option too on days where she has to stay at her desk. However it should be noted that these habits definitely started to change a little after her and & Ed started seeing each other, as he likes to make sure she has a chance to get out of the office. At least once/twice a week they'll go to the nearby cafe and try to get their favourite table before the tourists flood in.
Dinner: While she was with Siobhan they tried to keep a roster, that included the kids helping out, however, as the UNIT restructure became more and more demanding, Kate would often not make it home for dinner. Usually, she'd get home close to 11pm, at which point it was too late to eat anything. If she was staying behind at the office with someone, and that person ( usually Ed lbr ) asked, then yes, she would order takeaway with them. These days she usually makes it home for dinner, and it is very much a whole family affair or it's just her & her husband if Moira is busy and /or Gordy's not coming over. She's a very adventurous cook, She's picked up recipes from all over as being head of UNIT requires her to travel. But she still loves her staples, pasta, shepherds pie, stews, soups, roast on a weekend.
Takeaway: it pains me very much to say it, but her guilty pleasure is curry on chips.Other than she loves a good english fish and chips. If we're talking Asian cuisine then her go to is sweet and sour chicken or Kung Po Pork for Chinese takeaway and a lamb bhuna for indian. ....her taste in takeaway is completely apart from all other tastes in food. She is British so we will forgive her choices !!!!
DOES KATE HAVE A GOOD SINGING VOICE?
She can carry a tune, but wouldn't by any means call herself the next undiscovered talent.
DOES KATE HAVE ANY BAD HABITS OR TICS?
occasional stress smoker. Only in rare instances though and more to keep her hands from shaking than anything else. the situation has to be incredibly tense obviously, usually she's calm in a crisis. After so many years at UNIT, putting everything into her job and into the rebuild and eventual maintenance of that, she finds it somewhat difficult to hold conversations and ongoing relationships with people outside of work ( save for old relations and friendships ) .Because of this she can often come across as either awkward or cold.
also, is stubbornness a bad habit? I think it is.
WHAT DOES KATE USUALLY LOOK LIKE / WEAR?
Overall & signature items: Her look is understated, quietly fashionable. There are some things that carry through in her looks no matter the occasion, one of these is jewellery. She tends to favour simple sterling silver pieces that are nevertheless unique, coming from a handful of private jewellers in London that she has shopped at for a number of years now. For more decadent occasions she has pieces like teardrop pearl earrings and bracelets inlaid with opal. Another staple, unless she's at home, is her kitten heels and her many many scarves. Both are sourced from everywhere from luxury brands to market stalls she found on holiday. She definitely follows the old fashion rules to a tee, esp re: block colours and prints.
Work: She's most at home in trousers. For work, especially you will most likely see her in a sensible pantsuit in varying shades of blue or black lmao, nice satin or cotton blouse depending. Otherwise it's grey/black/brown/tan trousers, a cotton long sleeve in winter and a trench coat over that. Home: or at least, off work, it's a much more casual look, jeans ( ik ik, who is she ) crew neck sweaters, flannel shirts, turtlenecks, boots, corduroy or fleece lined jacket if it's cold. At home she tends to favour comfort over look.
Other occasions: sadly, there are moments where she has to swap trousers for one of the dresses she has banished to the back of the closet.Like every fashion girlie. She definitely has the little black dress, hers is quite tame, a knee length velvet number with a sweetheart neckline, but it is form fitting. In addition to this she has another, more casual, cotton, blue mid length dress, more for outdoors, garden parties etc and another wool number in a similar shade for more upscale events. There are also a few state dinner/gala dresses, also in varying shades of blue and black. By her standards they're more extravagant. By everyone else's, they're simple. understated.
IS KATE AFFECTIONATE? HOW MUCH? HOW SO?
Outside of work? Yes absolutely. And prior to working for UNIT she definitely was more openly affectionate with everyone in general. Not so much in a physical sense, she's never been overt like that in public. But certainly the way she communicates with people has changed, as well as how she will treat her partner in public. This job required her to be a whole lot more professional than she was before, and she adjusted to that. With Ed she's a little different. while they are absolutely professional at work ( she is still his boss after all ) there has been the occasional hand holding etc in times of stress.
Away from UNIT she is a very different person in her family life. Extremely affectionate towards the kids and partner. She knows her job is hard on them and tries hard to make up for the time she's away.
WHAT POSITION DOES KATE SLEEP IN?
usually, on her side. Easier to slide out of bed that way if she has to grab her phone or head off. Sometimes she will sleep more towards the middle of the bed, depends.
COULD YOU HEAR KATE IN THE HALLWAY FROM ANOTHER ROOM?
sometimes. if she's angry, or laughing. She's very embarrassed about her laugh, it's very loud, and very pronounced, she's forever trying to stifle it.

Our  Virginia  setting  is  split  into  directions  -  North,  East,  South  and  West.  Each  direction  will  feature  4  notable  locations  (for a total of 16 locations across the state!) that  tie  into  the  history  of  the  survivors  in  the  area.  However, to  keep  it  simple,  we  have  provided  a  broad  overview  of  the  area  per  direction.
THE  NORTH  (Infected  Count:  Medium  /  Supply  Count:  Low  /  Survivor  Count:  Low)
The  North  is  made  up  of  several  famous  mountains  and  caverns,  providing  an  expanse  of  Appalachia  and  Blue  Ridge  peaks  along  various  old  trails.  Seemingly  untouched  by  infection,  the  lush  overgrowth  and  preservation  of  the  environment  supply  a wide  opportunity  for  hunting  and  gathering of  native  species  of  animal  and  plant.  The  farther  North  traveled,  however,  the  more  hazardous,  as  the  infected  from  D.C  slowly  make  their  way  downwards  and  the  forests  become  dangerous  pockets  of  spore  growth.  Often,  storms  that  pick  up  spores  can  rain  down  on  populations  and  are  a  frequent  threat  to  those  that  do  not  know  how  to  prepare  for  them. The  main  danger,  of  course,  are  the  groups  residing  in  the  North.  From  cave  dwelling  cannibals  of  the  Underdark,  to  the  isolated  religious  Path  that  stubbornly  believe  they  are  God's  chosen,  to  the  Appalachian  trail  as  it  becomes  a  hotspot  for  travel  of  raiders  and  circuses  alike.  It  is  heavily  enunciated  to  move  with  caution  throughout  the  territory,  as  caves  and  abandoned  outposts  provide  different  factors  of  threat  for  passerby's.
THE  EAST (Infected  Count:  High  /  Supply  Count:  High  /  Survivor  Count:  High)
East  to  central  Virginia  are  the  most  populated  areas  of  the  state.  The  capital, Richmond, is  the  only  surviving  militarized  safe  zone  across  four  states,  with  much  of  its  population  housing  the  remains  of  D.C  after  their  safe  zone  fell  to  infection.  The  area  is  densely  populated  from  the  dilapidated  cities  and  is  home  to  a  dangerous  level  of  infected  that  roam  the  ruined  and  abandoned  streets.  Bombs  dropped  to  fight  the  first  surge  of  infection  have  left  damage  to  infrastructure  and  created  a  growing  hazard  both  to  those  traveling  and  for  infected  to  take  further  root  into  the  cities,  though  it  remains  rich  with  supplies  many  have  died  to  collect.  Despite  this,  it  continues  to  provide  the  most  life,  with  the  Richmond  safe  zone  and  Riverwalk  Town  as  the  primary  locations  for  survivors. Much  of  the  East  borders  water,  which  may  be  the  sole  reason  for  its  popularity.  The  mountainous  terrain  to  the  West  gives  way  to  sea  and  several  large  rivers,  including  the James  River,  York  River,  and  Rappahannock  River. Infected  become Swellers once  bloated  with  water,  leaving  them  to  wash  up  on  the  shores  like  dead  fish.  However,  dealing  with  Swellers  is  far  easier  than  other  variations,  as  they  are  much  slower  and  more  predictable  with  tides.
THE  SOUTH (Infected  Count:  Medium  /  Supply  Count:  Medium  /  Survivor  Count:  High)
The  South  of  Virginia  is  a  strange,  heavily  traversed  place.  The  primary  seat  of Roanoke  River,  which  by  itself  brings  heavy  traffic  to  the  area  (both  human  and  infected),  conflict  always  seems  to  be  a  stone's  throw  away.  Many  agree  that  the  air  in  Southern  Virginia  is odd  -  always  a  prickle  at  the  back  of  the  neck,  or  else  a  feeling  of  being  watched.  It  is  all  too  easy  to  stumble  unwitting  onto  a  stranger's  property  -  often  with  fatal  results.  The  damage  done  by  bombing  is  now  thick  and  lush  with  overgrowth,  buildings  overtaken  by  trawls  of  ivy,  but  so,  too,  are  buildings  sparse,  spread  wide  across  the  land,  leaving  a  lot  of  open  space. Threat,  here,  is  sporadic  and  unpredictable,  dependent  on  the  movement  of  members  of  its  primary  settlements.  Particularly  of  note  is Greensville  Prison,  still  active,  fortified,  tended  and  farmed  by  those  very  prisoners  it  once  held. Emporia is  the  largest  commercial  hub  to  be  found  in  Southern  Virginia,  attractive  to  traders  for  its  direct  link  to  North  Carolina,  though  oft  the  target  of  raids  by  inhabitants  of  Greensville  Prison.
THE  WEST (Infected  Count:  Low  /  Supply  Count:  Low  /  Survivor  Count:  Low)
The  Westernmost  side  of  Virginia  is,  for  the  most  part,  overrun  by  forest  (most  notably  the Forest  of  Spores,  which  bisects  the  George  Washington  &  Jefferson  National  Forests)  and  was,  before  the  apocalypse,  incredibly  sparsely  populated.  For  this  reason,  it  avoided  the  brunt  of  the  ensuing  bombing  and  became  the  final  resting  place  of  hundreds  who  fled  heedlessly  West  without  the  supplies  or  knowledge  to  survive  its  wilderness. Mount  Rogers -  the  highest  peak  of  Virginia  -  roosts  above  the  treeline,  looming  unblinking  over  the  West's  vast  forests  and  scattered  settlements,  the  most  notable  of  which  is  what  remains  of Montgomery  County,  a  former  agricultural  hub  now  home  to  two  warring  factions.  With  low  numbers  of  infected,  the  West  can  lull  inhabitants  into  a  false  sense  of  security. The  danger  comes  from  within.

Foushee's Mill
James River Park
Richmond, Virginia (USA)
Based on a photo from April 23, 2023.
These are the ruins of a grist mill that was constructed in 1819 between the James River and its canal along the north bank. The mill was destroyed by flooding in 1832, but most of the damage you see here has occurred since the 1950's. Originally this was a 2-story structure with a pointed roof. The water wheel would have been attached on the south wall, facing right in this picture (the side nearest the river).
Dr. William Foushee was a prominent citizen and Richmond's first mayor when it became a city in 1782. He served as president of the company that built a canal to bypass the falls of the river, an important means of transporting goods in the pre-railroad era. A man of many accomplishments, he had been a physician during the Revolutionary War. He sold the grist mill in 1824 to his son-in-law, but the mill only lasted 8 more years.
