Valerio’s Tropical Bakeshop, 2700 Colorado Blvd, Suite #146, Los Angeles (Eagle Rock), CA 90041
Tumblr media
It’s been a long time since I’ve been to a Valerio’s, the Fiipino bakery. This is a smaller location inside Eagle Rock Plaza, right next to Seafood City downstairs. They have sweet and savory items and not just baked goods either. They’re known for the pandesal. They were out of some things like lumpia.
Pimento cheese and ube seem like popular filings. Spotted various breads, desserts, pies, flan, ensaymada, cookies, hopia, cheese rolls, steamed buns (siopao), nilupak, bibinka, etc. Prices are about on par with other Asian bakeries like Sunmerry.
Pork adobo pandesal ($2.99): This is the Filipino equivalent of a Chinese bbq pork bun only with pork adobo. The pork is cooked in soy sauce, vinegar, and garlic. The bun had a dusting of crumbs and was soft and slightly sweet. The pork was shredded and slightly sweet. I liked how the pork didn’t have food coloring like Chinese BBQ pork. It did have a slight sweetness. There was plenty of pork. It was a big bun.
Tuna pandesal ($2.99) with egg, cheese, pickles, mayo, black pepper, canned tuna. The baked bun was soft and slightly sweet. The filling was lightly seasoned. I liked the additions to the canned tuna.
Their savory baked buns are good!

BIOGRAPHY
Always "Val," and never "Valerio Dizon"—unless it was his mother scolding him for staying out too late. Val was the kind of guy who made people feel at ease. Popular, good-natured, the one who’d help walk an old lady across the street without a second thought or share his lunch with a classmate who’d forgotten theirs. Up until high school, he never aspired to be anything more than what he was, a regular kid with a decent life in New Jakarta’s Marwar District.
Born to a single mother who ran the family bakery, Valerio’s Bake Shop, Val’s life followed a comfortable, if predictable, routine. The bakery was a local favorite, known for its warm, flaky pastries and the kind smile his mother greeted everyone with. For Val, the future seemed simple: he’d take over the bakery, maybe work part-time during college, and continue the family tradition. Ambition wasn’t something that had crossed his mind. Why would it? Life was normal. It was fine.
But even in his laid-back existence, he held an unwavering belief in justice. Though he was one of the popular kids, Val always made sure everyone was included, that no one felt left out. He’d step in when the neighborhood kids got too rough, making them apologize if they bumped into someone. Laws and order kept life safe, and that’s how Val liked it. Stable. Secure.
Until it wasn’t.
The robbery was a shock. A bakery of all places. The desperation in New Jakarta was growing, people were hungry—not just for food, but for survival. Val remembers running home, heart pounding, fearing the worst. The storefront window was shattered, glass littering the sidewalk, but his mother, though shaken, was unharmed. Relief washed over him, but reality punched him straight in the face—their safety had been an illusion, a fragile thing easily broken as the bakery’s window.
At the scene, Val’s eyes were drawn to an Overseer, an imposing figure clad in sleek armor, weapons glowing with the eerie light of Hextech crystals. The Overseer moved with authority, surveying the damage with a calm, focused demeanor. Val had never seen anything like it. The man approached him, asked if he was the owner’s son. When Val nodded, the Overseer placed a heavy, gloved hand on his shoulder. “Be strong,” he said, his voice steady. “Protect your mother. We won’t always be here.”
Those words struck something deep within Val. The Overseer’s presence, the power he wielded, and the responsibility he bore—it all crystallized in Val’s mind. He wanted to be strong enough to protect those he loved, to uphold the laws that kept people safe. For the first time, Val felt a drive, a purpose that went beyond the bakery and the simple life he’d always imagined.
From that day on, Val’s path shifted. With less than a year before his high school graduation, he poured himself into his studies, especially anything that would help him understand the law, justice, and the workings of the city. He trained his body, pushing himself to physical limits he’d never considered before. His mother supported him, proud of his newfound determination, even if it meant a different, bigger, future than she’d envisioned.
Val joined the Overseers as soon as he was able, climbing the ranks with a mix of hard work, innate talent, and that fierce belief in justice that had always been a part of him. He specialized in Hextech weaponry, just like the man he admired all those years ago. His titanium white gauntlets becoming his signature, earning him the nickname “The Marble Hand.”
Despite his rise, Val never lost that good-natured, approachable side. He was known for his fairness, his refusal to bend the rules, but also for his empathy. He argued for mercy when he believed people were victims of circumstance, remembering his own past and the desperation he had seen in the eyes of those who had turned to crime.
Now, as the Force Leader of the Overseers, Val is in a position of power he never sought but fully embraced. He sees himself in the new recruits, those young, eager faces that remind him of the boy he once was—the one who had no real ambition until the day his world was shaken. Val takes it upon himself to mentor them, to instill in them the same belief in justice that drives him. He’s seen the darkness in the city, but he’s also seen the light, and he’s determined to guide the next generation of law enforcers, and anyone else he can bring along, towards that light.
RELATIONSHIPS AND CONNECTIONS (More TBA)
Mother - Marigold Santos Dizon
Val had always admired his mom. Growing up, he was a bit of a brat—he can admit that now—but looking back, he feels a little sorry for the way he acted. It wasn’t until he got older that he realized the situation they were in: a single mom running a bakery by herself, keeping everything together with sheer willpower and ungodly early mornings. Val remembers how she would wake up at 3 or 4 in the morning to get the day’s stock of baked goods going, a routine that seemed as natural to her as breathing.
By the time Val was in high school, he couldn’t just watch her do it all alone. He started getting up early too, helping her out before heading off to practice. It wasn’t much, but he wanted to do his part. Those early mornings taught him perseverance, a trait he knows he inherited from her.
Now, as he climbs the ranks in the Overseers and dreams of a better future for both himself and the city, he wishes he could do more for her. Val hopes to see her retire soon, but he wonders if she could really let go of the bakery. It’s been her life’s work, her pride. Would she find fulfillment in retirement, or would she miss the routine, the sense of purpose it gave her?
One thing Val does know, however, is that she keeps asking when he’s going to get married. She says it doesn’t matter who, as long as he’s happy. Val finds her persistence amusing and endearing, a reminder that no matter how much his life changes, some things—like his mom’s unconditional love and prized pandesal recipe—will always stay the same.
Boyfriend - Santi Amarin-Zhao
The words were already spilling out of his mouth before he could think. He had just finished a routine line of questioning, and before Val knew it, his next question had him asking out New Jakarta’s most eligible bachelor and X Academy’s CEO on a date. Val’s heart nearly stopped as he realized what he’d done—he’d never fumbled like that before when asking someone out. He was about to apologize, to take it back, but then Santi said, “Sure.” Just like that.
They’ve gone on quite a few dates since then, and Val likes to think they’re going steady, exclusive even. But he can’t help noticing the walls Santi has put up. Their relationship isn’t public, Santi avoids any kind of PDA, and sometimes he feels just out of reach, even during late nights when it’s just the two of them in bed. It’s like Santi’s there, but not fully there.
Still, it doesn’t shake Val’s faith in him. He trusts Santi. They both want the same thing, right? For this city to be better, safer. Val tells himself that’s enough, even if getting closer to Santi feels like trying to touch something through glass.

Closed Starter for Valerio Dizon ( @marble-hand )
Location: Valerio's Bakeshop, Mawar District Time: After morning rush hour
What is it like to be hungry? Is it the same as desire?
When she was a child, her mother explained that both were similar to ambition, all sharing the consuming need to fill a never-quite full glass. As descriptive as her mother could be, she never understood the imagery; Aramonta was never restricted to one cup. She had access to what she needed and what she wanted. Resources were never a problem and more often than not, she didn’t even have to wait too long. Today, however, a small family-owned bakery reminded her that though she couldn’t physically feel her pain, she knew what yearning was.
Tumblr media
Through the glass display, she peered into a small opening between stacks of baked goods to get a better view of the kitchen’s ovens. She could smell a new batch of bread baking in the back while her chef, Nanay Maggie, spoke with her sister, Tita Mari. The two elderly women cackled together, entertained by exchanging hot gossip about their 'children' in Tagalog. Aramonta resisted the urge to roll her eyes when Nanay Maggie mentioned her name and she chose to look over at Val instead. “Why do they always do this? I just want bread.” She almost pouted as she thought about how her chef enjoyed teasing her about her impatience. “How much longer?”

Since you did it with Galavant, any Crazy Ex Gf songs that remind you of EoA characters or your OCs?😁
Woooo thank you so much for the ask!!
So, of those we discussed together, so it may not be super interesting, but here they are anyways!
"I'm So Good At Yoga" kinda reminds me of "A Little Bit More" ×) Valentina has some Valencia's vibes to me ×)
"I Have Friends" is Chloe's anthem.
"Settle For Me" reminds me of "Fee Free To Have Fun" (while "Don't Settle For Me" (performed by Heather) is Elena's respond to Alonso. She's too badass to be someone he settles for)
"What'll It Be" can be anyone's theme song who desires to achieve something, but I specifically think of Gabe. Just change Greg's bar for the Nuñez and Son bakery, and it's our general.
"I Could If I Wanted To" is TEEN ESTEBAN
"Friendtopia" just let the four amigos sing this.
"You Go First" is Elena and Naomi after their disagreement about the lighthouse akajsjidjfkkfkf.
"Who's The New Guy" in short about Naomi towards Rita.
"You're My Best Friend (And I Know I'm Not Yours)" aksjndkfkf idk it gives me Isabel and Tomiko vibes (at the beginning of their friendship, at least)
"Tell Me I'm Okay Patrick Zuzo" maybe, I'm weird, but this song reminds me of Elena and Zuzo's dynamic, whenever she goes through anything ×)
"Fit Hot Guys Have Problems Too" Gabe and maybe other guards.
"Horny Angry Tango" Esteoma or Delgados in "Not Without My Magic"
"I'm Just A Boy In Love" my OC. Valerio ×)
"Don't Be A Lawyer Chancellor" Esteban ;)
"I Want To Be A Child Star" help, but it reminded me of Alonso a bit ×) (as does "I Go To The Zoo")
I think that's it! Thank you for the ask again!!

Did you know #Filipinos made #tamales ? The #Pampanga region, north of #Manila, makes tamales out of rice flour, #coconut milk, egg and a protein wrapped and steamed in a #bananaleaf. This #chickentamale from Valerio Bakery is a delicate treat. The texture is completely different from a #Mexican tamale. It's very smooth, silky and slightly gelatinous. Full of umami from the coconut, egg, and banana leaf- infused rice; it's quite rich. A bit pricey as each small serving is $3.99. But sooo good! The labor intensive preparation makes it hard to find but I always pick up a couple when I do find them. Such a unique and delicious experience. #filipinofood #pilipinas (at Eagle Rock Plaza) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1j9dyAH1dd/?igshid=1f2ld92lvbdom

Balancing on a limestone ridge above the River Doubs, Dole is a lovely old city in the north of the Jura Range.
The Holy Roman emperor and Count Burgundy remained in Dole, and it was under their control under the annexation of Louis XIV in 1678 by Louis XIV. Dole’s old center is a confusion of alleyways edged by Renaissance homes with turrets and courtyards. It’s great fun to explore and was also the birthplace of Louis Pasteur, raised in poverty in the tannery quarter by the Canal du Rhône au Rhin. France's second-largest forest, Forêt de Chaux is Dole's back garden and resonates with past occupations such as pottery, charcoal burning, and woodcutting. Discover the best things to do in Dole.
[toc]
1. Old Dole
The best thing about Dole is the town’s disorganized jumble of stairways, fountains, passages and tight, winding streets. The tall stone houses pressing in from the sides date back as far as the 16th century, and around 20 are official French historical monuments.
Keep your eyes bright, because often you can peek through an arch into an inner garden, or find a secret curiosity like Fontaine aux Lepreux on Rue Pasteur.
This canal-front street, where Louis Pasteur is born, maybe the prettiest in the city, with a cute footbridge over the water, covered passageways and a riverfront path decorated with flowers.
2. Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dole
The Dole Fine Art Museum assembles archaeological finds from within and near the city, combining painting and sculpture from France, Italy and low nations. The archaeology galleries are in the basement where you can ponder Roman sarcophagi, Merovingian stone carvings and far older artifacts going back to the Palaeolithic Period.
Further is a collection of historical art, which gives you an idea of the kind of wealth booming around Dole in the early modern period. There are works by Baroque painters like Francesco Albani, Simon Vouet, Pieter van Boucle, Master of Saint-Gilles and Valerio Castello.
On the top floor, there is the contemporary art of Muslims, mainly from the Nouveau Réalisme movement founded in the early 1960s.
3. Maison de Louis Pasteur
The world-changing microbiologist was Louis Pasteur was born at this house by the canal in 1822. This is the tanning area, and his father's old leather tools were in the basement as if he was off work all day.
Over eight rooms, the displays inside try to flesh out Pasteur’s background and approach his work via art and symbolism. You’ll get to know the advances he made in immunology, fermentation, and crystallography.
There’s also a small cache of items belonging to Pasteur, including letters and instruments donated to the museum in the 20th century by his grandson.
4. Forêt de Chaux
If you need some spotless properties, Dole will open up the second largest forest in France. This unfurls over 25,000 hectares and has existed in harmony with Dole and the other towns and villages.
The forest fuelled all sorts of trades in the city, including ironwork, glassmaking, and ceramics.
If you’re planning a hike in the forest it’s relatively easy to get around as in 1826 eight Doric columns, each five meters high were installed on the main trails to help woodcutters find their way around.
5. Hôtel-Dieu
If you're in Dole in the summer, call the tourist office to arrange a tour of the 17th-century Hôtel-Dieu hotel. This old hospital was built in a Renaissance style and was the last big building to be completed in Dole before the city was annexed to France.
It was a hospital up 1992 and now houses the city’s archives and library. But there are thrilling traces from the early years of the hospital in the kitchen, bakery, and fermentation room.
Best of all is the apothecary, in vaulted rooms with wooden cabinets and marble fireplaces. There are more than 150 Dole-style earthenware pots for all manner of weird medicines.
6. Collégiale Notre-Dame
The bell-tower of this church climbing above the Doubs is one of the classic images of Dole. It was built during the 1500s after Louis XI destroyed Dole in an attempt to conquer Franche-Comté.
In this century, fiery gothic architecture gave way to the Renaissance, so the church has a mix of two styles. No expenses were spent on the rich furniture, and the region's top artists and craftsmen were hired to work on it.
See a series of paintings in the nave of Laurent Pécheux, Madonna and the Colorful Child of Jean de la Huerta and the marble and iron podium from 1765.
7. Les Baraques du 14
On a walk-in Forêt de Chaux, you can book a course for this village hidden in the woods for hundreds of years. The forest supports a vibrant wood and coal industry that offers various deals in Dole.
And you can see how the jungle lived in a small village of four houses, two bakeries and a beekeeper, dating back to the 16th century. The hamlet is open every afternoon except Monday.
When you get to Dole check in with the tourist office to see if there’s anything going on at the hamlet because in the summertime there’s a calendar of demonstrations, talks, workshops and musical evenings.
8. Grotte d’Osselle
Unusual for a cave network, the SummerSlele Grotte was discovered long ago in the 1200s and people have come to look around since the 1500s. This puts it among the oldest show-caves in the world.
About 50,000 years ago, prehistoric cave bears used these chambers and tunnels, leaving about 3,000 skeletons. These have gone to a host of museums, but there’s a set on show in cases at the caves.
The system has a “wet” section where water has trickled through and formed tortuous and colorful concretions. But there was also a dry room, where people like Voltaire would attend feasts in the 18th century and where missionaries sought refuge in the French Revolution.
9. Les Halles de Dole
Just opposite the Collegiate Church at the top of the city is the marketplace where people have been trading since the 1200s. The covered market was rebuilt several times until 1883 when its current Baltard-style iron and glass hall was completed.
There are four markets a week inside, on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings, and even Friday evenings from 17:00. The morning markets are accompanied by outdoor stalls on Place Nationale selling homewares, clothing, handicrafts, and flowers.
Inside, you can sample fruits, vegetables, cheese, meat, charcuterie, freshwater fish and local pastries for Dole.
10. Saline Royale – Arc-et-Senans
On the other side of the Chaux forest is a wonderful remnant from the last years before the French Revolution.
Dating to the 1770s, the Royal Saltworks is a symbol of an onerous tax on salt, which forced people (including children ages eight and up) to buy a certain amount of salt a year at a fixed price.
The building and its complex are stunning, showing the influence of the Enlightenment in its rational geometry and arrangement of the different edifices on the site. On summer evenings the complex is illuminated with magical projections for the Lux Salina sound and light show.
