Carrying the Master’s Bag: The Essence of Apprenticeship in Martial Arts
In the world of martial arts, there exists a profound tradition that transcends mere physical techniques—a tradition deeply rooted in the relationship between master and apprentice. This relationship embodies a journey of not only learning techniques but also understanding the essence of the art itself. In this blog post, we delve into the significance of apprenticeship in martial arts and how seemingly mundane tasks can reveal profound insights into a master's teachings, drawing upon key Japanese principles.
Understanding Apprenticeship:
Apprenticeship in martial arts is more than just learning techniques; it's a holistic process of immersion, respect, and dedication. Like a bonsai tree meticulously shaped by the master's hands, apprentices are cultivated with care, attention, and discipline.
The Mundane as Mastery:
In martial arts, the path to mastery often begins with seemingly mundane tasks, such as cleaning the dojo, folding uniforms, or even carrying the master's bag. These tasks may appear trivial, but they hold immense significance in the journey of an apprentice.
Key Japanese Principles:
Shoshin (Beginner's Mind): Embracing a beginner's mind allows apprentices to approach even the most mundane tasks with curiosity and openness. By relinquishing preconceptions, one can uncover hidden lessons in seemingly ordinary actions.
Shugyo (Intense Training): The path of martial arts demands unwavering dedication and perseverance. Through rigorous training, apprentices not only hone their physical skills but also cultivate mental fortitude and discipline.
Seishin Tanren (Spiritual Forging): Just as steel is tempered by fire, apprentices undergo a process of spiritual forging. Every task, no matter how mundane, becomes an opportunity for self-improvement and character development.
Learning the Essence:
Carrying the master's bag may seem insignificant, but it is a profound lesson in humility, service, and dedication. In Japanese culture, the act of serving tea (Chanoyu) is considered a form of spiritual practice, where every movement is imbued with mindfulness and respect. Similarly, carrying the master's bag is not merely about physical weight but about carrying the legacy, wisdom, and teachings of the master with reverence and honor.
Conclusion:
In the journey of martial arts, apprenticeship is not merely a means to an end but a transformative experience that shapes one's character, spirit, and understanding of the art. By embracing the principles of humility, dedication, and mindfulness, apprentices can unlock the essence of the master's teachings in even the most mundane tasks. So, let us carry the master's bag with pride, knowing that within its weight lies the wisdom of generations past and the promise of mastery yet to come.

Khalil Don’t Fear The Reaper
October, 2024
Khalil Rountree's goals in life was to be in a ufc billboard and go share his story to inspire others in a similar position to him. Anyone who was in a dark place in life can reach the highest of the highs if they believe in themselves, "your life matters".
Despite starting off strong and giving Alex Pereira the hardest fight at 205 yet, he still lost. He dropped Alex and made him look human. However be got finished in the fourth round. Towards the end his face was cut open in three places, his stamina was drained, he was getting whailed on by Alex, against all this he still kept swinging. Showing that no matter where you are or how bad it is, to alwasy keep fighting.
After the loss, he was interviewed by Joe Rogan for his post fight speech. Even though he lost the crowd cheered him on. Khalil had accomplished his goal of being on the billboard of ufc previously, but now through the crowd's love and appreciation despite his lost he now knew he finally achieved his dream. He inspired others with his story.

OC interview
Thanks to @bloodmoonloveletter here, @mk-writes-stuff here, @illarian-rambling here, and @elsie-writes here!
Last did Wade here.
Doing Jazlyn now because I don't talk about her enough and I'd like to develop her character more!
Are you named after anyone?
“Nope. The one and only, girl. I'm just Jazlyn!”
When was the last time you cried?
“Oh, pfft! I don't cry. Maybe out of sheer boredom listening to Dr. Ass-ghar ramble on about her rules and how I'm not following them! Like, girl, I can't help that I have fire powers and lit something on fire! That would be like getting mad that Gabe got a little dirty. Oh, and her meetings are the wooorst. Yeah crying for my life in there.” [It was during Ewan's clarinet solo actually]
Do you have kids?
“Girl, what? I'm not even eighteen yet! Close... I'd love kids, honestly. A lot of them! I'd have so much fun with them!”
Do you use sarcasm a lot?
“Look, I know I come across as someone who uses sarcasm, but I'd rather just flat out say what I'm thinking. Why be like ‘wow that was so riveting’ when I could say, ‘this is the most boring crap I have ever seen in my entire life’? So much easier, no mental hoops. Besides, Ewan is the most oblivious to sarcasm I have ever seen.”
What’s the first thing you notice about people?
“Their confidence level. I can usually tell how someone feels about themselves based on how they stand. Posture is the key, but also what they're doing with their hands.”
What’s your eye colour?
“Brown. With some golden flecks when the light hits them right, according to Ewan.”
Scary movies or happy endings?
“Easy, scary movies. This question is stupid - they aren't opposites. However, nothing is more fun than a horror movie. Love getting the blood pumping. Yelling at the characters for being massive dummies is also the best. Horror is the most entertaining to watch with others. Ewan thank the Lord is also a horror enthusiast. We make a habit to have at least one or two horror movie nights a month.”
Any special talents?
“Oh, several. I am pretty athletic. Took cheerleading a while back and now I am on my high school basketball team. At first, I wasn't sure I would like basketball - my coach in middle school pulled me aside and recommended it due to my height, but I love it now. I am also getting pretty good at learning archery. Lighting the arrows on fire makes that more exciting. I am also pretty good at martial arts and my pyrokinesis. Working on breathing fire without burning my throat. Thank the Lord I have Wade to heal me so I can try again!”
Where were you born?
“I was born in flippin' Utah. I know--lily white state, you'd never guess. Ewan and I plan to move somewhere else once we can. Can you believe he was born in Alium? That ain't fair.”
Do you have any pets?
“Ewan and I plan to one day get a dog. We have been planning on moving in together for a while.”
What sort of sports do you play?
“Like I said, basketball. I would love to learn how to play this Alii fireball sport. It's very similar to basketball, but pyrokinetics pass around fire. That sounds like so much fun, man. Did you know they have to keep a healer at each game because not all pyrokinetics are immune to fire? And the audience can get hit too if they're not careful! This sounds like such a fun sport.”
How tall are you?
“I have finally passed six-foot-three. Alii heights are a blessing and a curse.”
What was your favourite subject in school?
“I hope you tell me PE counts as a subject cause I ain't saying anything else. School sucks, girl. I have gotten detention for the lamest reasons imaginable.”
What is your dream job?
“I would love to be in sales. Something about convincing people to do what I want is inticing. Planning on getting a marketing degree when I go to college next year.”

Even after the 2021 reboot, this is still my favorite Mortal Kombat movie.
While it may not have the blood and gore that is synonymous with the games, it still genuinely captured the tone and spirit of the franchise.
The plot moves at such a brisk pace, and I love how simple it is compared to the other MK movies, which normally try to cram in as much of the lore and characters as possible (or at least their takes on them).
The cast is excellent. Robin Shou as Liu Kang is truly the heart and soul of the film for me (it also helps that he contributed greatly to the film's production). Linden Ashby was honestly the best Johnny Cage in the entire franchise. You also have Christopher Lambert as Raiden and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Shang Tsung, both of whom go over-the-top in the best way possible while still being extremely charismatic and charming.
Of course, Mortal Kombat is a Martial Arts movie based on a fighting game franchise, so one expects the movie to excel on the action, and it does just that as you have some truly entertaining fight scenes, especially Johnny Cage vs. Scorpion and Liu Kang vs. Reptile, both of which were choreographed by Robin Shou (which goes back to how he contributed to the production).
Visually, this movie looks great. Sure, the special effects haven't aged well, but the cinematography and production design still look great as ever. Paul W.S. Anderson truly showed potential here, despite his later works being mostly garbage, but I always thought he was a great visual director.
You also have that amazing soundtrack. Obviously, the Mortal Kombat theme song by The Immortals (a side project by Lords of Acid) as well as the remix by Utah Saints, but you also have some great Electronic and Metal songs from the likes of KMFDM, Orbital, Fear Factory, etc.
Mortal Kombat (1995) is actually still my favorite video game movie. While they have gotten better lately with the likes of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the two Sonic the Hedgehog movies, all of which were solid, this definitely set the bar earlier.
That's all for now.

This style focuses on the body’s flexibility to get the upper hand and uses the opponent’s body limitations to their advantage. This style was developed by the Gracie family to change the judo style from using physical strength against your opponent but using techniques and positions for any person. Sparring or “Rolling” situations can change if it is Gi or No Gi. With Gi, you can use the person’s Gi against them by grabbing them to gain leverage or even use their own Gi to choke them while relying on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques. In No Gi, the focus is purely on BJJ techniques to get a submission on your opponent. There are several positions the fight can take place from such as guard position (one person is on their knees and the other is on their back with their legs wrapped around the opponent’s waist), mount (one person is on their back and the other is on top of the opponent in a sit-like position), back mount position (one person is on their stomach and the other is on the opponent’s back in a sit-like position), and side control (one person is on their back the other is on top with the legs on the side of the opponent). Each position has its positives and negatives for both the person on top and bottom if you know what you are doing you can make the situation work for you. 3. Legends MMA is affiliated with Robert Drysdale who oversees and grades our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) program.

some essential michael groundwork both for new people and because i haven’t been here in a while and some things might have changed.
- michael is the oldest of three siblings, with evan being four years younger and elizabeth eight years younger. they all have the same mother. - his father is from southampton and his mother is from manchester; both met at uni in america and settled in utah. so, sadly, 🇬🇧 but he has only ever lived in america, and thus his accent is very gentle and his speech patterns are a little jumbled. - he dropped out of high school and did not go to college. he got a practical education in engineering from william and by working at freddy’s. - he was the bully in the foxy mask responsible for evan’s death. he still has pretty severe anger issues, his depression very rarely manifests as sadness and he is highly likely to lash out. - he is the night guard in the first, third, and sixth games. he is not the protagonist of the second or fourth games. - he is not on good terms with henry, they are allies of necessity. he does not see henry as a father figure, though he did consider him an informal uncle when he was a young child. that fell off when henry and william stopped speaking to each other. - he was not working for william, he is not his accomplice, he didn’t know about the murders. - he is psychotic as an aftereffect of teenage drug use and trauma; the hallucinations that you see in game are true to his perspective. he also has auditory and olfactory hallucinations, usually manifesting as footsteps, something banging in the walls, and the smell of rot or burning wires. - he is dyslexic! he’s very much an auditory and visual learner. - he’s an extremely talented mechanic/engineer, and designed the rockstar line of animatronics. he is also partly responsible for the funtime line, but only foxy and freddy survived past his initial sketches, and they were heavily edited by william. he did not design baby or ballora. - he has poor eyesight post-scooping because of how far his eyes were driven back into his skull. he can’t see in bright or low light, it has to be very controlled. - he’s bisexual and hypersexual. - run faster run a mile take self-defence lessons. he is so fast and he hits like a truck ( he’s a brawler, though, so he’s not busting out any formal martial arts and would lose to anyone coordinated who could deal with his raw strength; think less superhero, more bouncer ).

A Shadowy Mist Chapter 13 (Transformers Animated story)
Pairings: Prowl x Oc and Bumblebee x Oc
Summary: While on patrol for the decepticons, two individuals came to Detroit to see a fellow agent of The Unknown
Location: Detroit, Michigan
It was a stormy day in Detroit, as Meagan and Shadow Mist returned to their patrol around the city. Then Optimus called, 'Autobots, return to base, no sign of the decepticons.' He said, "On it Optimus." Shadow Mist said, but as they sped towards home, Meagan saw a familiar looking vehicle that she thought she'd never see. She sighed at the sight of it.
Back at the Hideout
Meagan was on her phone trying to make a call, but no answer was made. Prowl noticed this. "Meagan, is something wrong?" He asked, "I saw something while Shadow Mist and I were out patrolling the city, but I don't know if what I saw was my imagination." She answered the ninjabot. "I see." He said. Then, a knock on the door was heard, and Meagan went to go see. "Hello?" She said as she opened the door and was suddenly grabbed. Her screaming alerts the ninjabot, but then he hears her laughing. He cautiously opens the big door and sees a bearded man in black, giving the woman a noogie. "It's been a while, kiddo!" The man said in an Australian accent. Meagan looked at Prowl, "It's ok, Prowl, Chris isn't here to hurt me." She said.
Later
Meagan introduces Chris and his partner Marcus to the Autobots. "Guys, these are my fellow agents, Chris and Marcus." She said as Chris stood there with another man in a red suit and fedora. "Fellow agents? Are they part of The Unknown, too?" Bumblebee asked, "Oui! We came here after finishing a mission from Utah." Marcus said in a French accent. "That skinwalker nearly got me. But we handled it and got a new battle scar from it, too." Chris said, showing his scarred arm. "What's a skinwalker?" Bulkhead asked. "A skinwalker is a shape shifting medicine man in Native American culture." Meagan explained. "I didn't know humans can transform." Prowl said. "Well, there's a lot of strangeness in the world." Meagan said, Shadow Mist looked at the two men, "So what are you two to Meagan?" She asked. "Well, I'm her mentor. While Marcus here is just my partner." Chris answered, "Chris taught me how to use a sword." Meagan said. "And who taught you martial arts? Was it Reaper?" Shadow Mist asked, "No, it was Kobe. He taught me ninjutsu." Meagan answered. She looked at her two fellow agents. "So why are you guys here?" She asked. "We came to help, The Unknown sent us in case you were in need of backup." Marcus answered. "Then why haven't they contacted me about it?" Meagan asked. "We thought we surprise you." Chris said. Meagan sighed, "Ok. But let me warn you two that fighting the bad giant robots won't be easy." She said. "Kid, you know I'm always up for a challenge." Chris said, "Then I suggest you two pair up with a bot." She said, "Fair enough." Chris said, "I'll go with the big green one. He seems like a bruiser." He added, "Aw shucks, go on." Bulkhead said, "Then I'll team up with Prowl." Marcus said, "He seems like a bot with class." He added. "Good." Meagan said, "By the way, there'll be another agent joining us soon." Marcus said, Meagan sighs, "Which one?" She asked. "Scottie." Chris said, "The girly girl? Are you serious?!!" Meagan yelled. "Easy, kiddo. She's a nice girl." Chris said, "Yeah, until she gives you annoying advice on fashion." Meagan said, "I don't like being told what I can or can't wear." She added. "This will be interesting." Shadow Mist whispered to PixelSpark.
To be continued...

Midday Musings: Progressions
You know, occasionally, I get thinking about how oddly storied many of our lives are- each of us lives in our own little microcosm of existence, loving, loving, laughing, fighting, praying- and doing things on a combination, seeing things and experiencing things that no one else will ever see- I grew up wandering the slot canyons, deserts, hills, caves, and hoodoos of southern Utah, searched for arrowheads on 50 mile mountain, leaned stories older than the western United States, and have- in my life, received a black belt, two rank promotions, have taught martial arts in seven cities, lived in northern Argentina for two years meeting people and getting to know and work alongside people from all walks of life, ( and maybe crossed into Bolivia by accident for a few minutes- genuinely not sure on that point) and I’m currently a candidate for Masters in the style that I study.
None of this was something I really saw myself doing growing up. As a seven year old, when I started training, I never expected to visit two countries, over forty states, or to do any of the many things that I ended up doing- I constantly was presented with one continuous question- what is the best decision NOW???
Got through school with good grades, so I was able to get into college. Lived in Argentina, so I was able to fast track my bachelors in Spanish- trained in martial arts for over 18 years out of sheer love for it and a s a by product I’ love almost accidentally had a major impact in the lives of hundreds of people. I’ve made friends all over the world, and still- my questions are the same- what is the right decision NOW?
I don’t think I’ve always chosen well- in fact I can point to numerous devastating mistakes, poor choices, and general idiocies that have also led me to where I am- I see how the could could have fallen any number of ways- it I will always be grateful for the experience, and my favorite sight is still one that I discovered as a small child barely able to communicate- I love to look up through the trees as sunlight turns the leaves into burning gems- filled with brilliance, life, and birdsong.
And all info is we that way- each life a story- individual, with it’s own cast, it’s own characters, it’s own natural arcs and evolutions. Tragedies, comedies, romances, and thrillers, all happening around us all the time- 8 billion worlds we know nothing about.
Gets me thinking for a good long time.

1. are you named after anyone?
my legal first name is after my paternal grandmother (with a slight variation) and my legal middle name is maternal grandmother's name. my chosen name, kit, is technically after an oc of mine, who ended up just being a projection of my transgender feelings. i haven't chosen a new middle name but i will probably pick a family name.
2. when was the last time you cried?
yesterday. i was just having an awful day.
3. do you have any kids?
i sure hope not. i do want human children someday.
4. do you use sarcasm a lot?
not really. sometimes, but not frequently.
5. what's the first thing you notice about people?
probably the way they carry themselves.
6. what's your eye color?
blue, but it's grayish and greenish.
7. scary movies or happy endings?
happy endings. i do like me a good sad ending but i can't really handle the intensity of scary movies.

i think i have an above average academic talent. i one of the top students at school in both math and english.
9. where were you born?
utah.
10. what are your hobbies?
creative writing, singing, and acting, primarily.
11. have you any pets?
i live on a very small ranch and my family raises goats, chickens, sheep, and cattle. i also have one cat but i don't like reminding myself of that because i love him but i also may have a phobia of him so he doesn't receive the love he deserves.
12. what sports do you play?
i used to do martial arts, but no sports now.
13. how tall are you?
about 5'4"?
14. favorite subject in school?

Rules: answer the questions and tag some friends at the bottom!
1. Are you named after anyone?
In part, a famous author of years gone by. In part my parents liked the name. (If you can guess it, more power to you.) I prefer my middle name, a Biblical name, but since I have both an aunt and a cousin with that name, I wouldn't use it.
2. When was the last time you cried?
Two days ago, when I had a ridiculous breakdown over something that should not have turned a hair. I'm doing okay now, though.
3. Do you have kids?
I do not. Someday I hope to marry and have a family, though.
4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?
It depends on who I'm speaking with.
5. What’s the first thing you notice about people?
I haven't a clue, it depends on many factors.
6. What’s your eye color?
Blue or vaguely greenish, idk.
7. Scary movies or happy endings?
Always happy endings.
8. Any special talents?
None, unfortunately.
9. Where were you born?
In the top hospital in the state, because it was the only one equipped for such high level care as I required.
10. What are your hobbies?
Writing, reading, photography, art, singing, midwifery, piano playing, and many others.
11. Have you any pets?
I have none any more, not since my last rabbit died (I loved her). My parents remain firm on their stance that we shall not have a cat in our house.
12. What sports do you play/have you played?
I loved softball in high school (I was a decent pitcher and excellent close fielder, at least as far as school girls teams go lol). Likewise table tennis, though it hardly took a great deal of skill to be on the girls team. I used to play soccer, but I doubt that I shall ever play it again for a variety of reasons not least of which is because of my back. Did a little bit of disc golf but I don't really have the stamina for it.
13. How tall are you?
5'7" or so.
14. Favorite subject in school?
Depended on my mood. Overall, probably Maths Methods.
15. Dream job?
Midwife all the way.

Mid-Term Grades
Back in January, I had these CRAZY goals for myself. Now, I self-grade myself based on my performance.
◀️ Short Term Goals ~1 month ▶️
✔️ Holy moly, fix these gloves. (Yep. Totally remade them, competed in them.)
✔️ Clear phone to record Midwinter Armizare II matches. (I made something that small a goal?)
✖️ Copy down four more pages of MS3227a / Dobringer. (Lol, I haven't done ANY of that.)
✖️ Land a one-handed off-side zwerchhau during the longsword portion of MWA2 using my super short feder (The opportunity didn't present itself, didn't attempt)
🔶 Disarm someone at MWA2 (Half credit. Wrested a rapier away from a guy at MWA2)
✔️ DO NOT BE DISARMED AT ALL during MWA2. This is a Fiore/Italian focused group hosting, I’m sure they’re itching to grapple (Did it!)
◀️ Longer term goals: (~3-6 month) ▶️
✔️ If I get accepted to the University of Utah, reach out to the HEMA people around there. (Done)
✖️ Copy down all of Dobringer (longsword and messer). (0/10)
✖️ Copy down all of Glasgow (messer). (Ditto)
🔶 Develop presentation for special event, present if accepted. Partial. (I got accepted to present a HEMA panel at an Anime Convention on the 25th!)
✔️ Work through Cutting with the Medieval Sword. (Halfway, but full credit since I had good performance at a cutting seminar)
🔶 Sell my excess HEMA shit Partial. (Got a little more to sell.)
◀️ Stretch goals: (may not happen, are extra credit) ▶️
✖️ Before leaving Minnesota, or September 1st, earn a medal during MWA2 or Icebreaker 3 or The Arnold if I can make it. (Didn't go to Arnold. No medals at Icebreaker or MWA. Obvious stretch goal)
✔️ Organize a cutting event locally. We should do more of that here. (Lol, someone else did that, and WAY BETTER than if I had done it. But I helped, so credit.)
✖️ Record myself working through Glasgow messer as a left-hander vs right-hander. (Nope. Pretty much done with regular sparring and such for the summer.)
✖️ Go to Geselle Fechten (may not happen because of move) (Ain't gonna happen)
🔶 Post more of my stuff on YouTube PENDING!
🔶 Do the April video challenge. Probably on the cool Dobringer stuff or messer stuff (or both??) PENDING! Also, it’s the May video challenge this year. Good news for me.
Not counting stretch goal failures against me, I have earned:
8.5 / 12, which is roughly 70.8%, which is like a C-Minus.
C's get degrees. If I put more effort and focus and discipline into this, I could have realistically achieved 11.5 / 12.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

2.This martial art is a ground fighting, self-defense art in which a smaller/ weaker person can defeat a bigger, stronger assailant by using the body to submit the opponent using joint-locks and chokeholds in Gi or No Gi style.
