To be so honest I think Lan Wangji is the character the donghua fumbles the hardest
#It does great in making him look cool at least#But it's much more blatantly just making him look cool than playing up his strengths like it does w/ eg LXC#And the places it doesn't really succeed are I think tbh the ones with the biggest effects on the character#Out of all the chara fumbles. Yknow#People talk abt how Untamed LWJ doesn't survive the censorship cut if you remove the homophobia#But the thing is I do think Untamed LWJ survives that bc we spend time with him and they do their best to lean more into the ideological ar#in ways that track as an extrapolation/examination of greater depth on LWJ as an individual#and while the loss from censorship is really felt I think moreso than some positive critics r willing to allow for that matter –#Untamed has things to say abt him nonetheless and is valuable to a good LWJ reading. Not to mention the acting performance#The donghua though this really does apply#LWJ doesn't survive the cut from censorship there at all bc the donghua's so condensed they don't get time to play up a different angle#And tbh a lot of their attempts backfire#I don't actually like having LWJ along on Empathy scenes bc it feels like it undercuts both WWX's skill and the trust post timeskip LWJ#has in her and shows in her wrt her going where he can't directly follow in this way#And the donghua as I've complained abt before makes him much more expressive and sensitive which I think is a huge negative#It makes him way more normal and this is just such a downgrade#I don't want LWJ to talk!#Untamed gave us a more functionally communicative and pathosy LWJ that still didn't talk and still felt a little weird and reserved#It's Doable#But the donghua just has him like . Capable of saying emotional sentences and doing negotiations and it's like. No#My point is that LWJ is autistic and adaptations need to lean into that more.
