New Post has been published on https://toldnews.com/health/too-much-toothpaste-may-hurt-your-childs-smile/
Too much toothpaste may hurt your child’s smile
When struggling to put a child to bed on time each night, one of the last things on a parent’s mind is the amount of toothpaste smeared across their toothbrush. However, a recent study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that parents and care providers for young children should focus on the amount of fluoride-containing paste that is going into their children’s mouths. Nearly 40 percent of children ages 3 to 6 are using more fluoride-containing toothpaste than recommended by public health officials.
That said, the same CDC report also found that 80 percent of children between the ages of 3 and 15 began brushing after their first birthday — which is too late, according to the American Dental Association. Many children also only brush once per day, while brushing twice a day is recommended.
Dentists recommend beginning to brush as soon as you see your child’s first tooth and using a pea-sized amount of toothpaste for children ages 3 to 6. A grain-of-rice amount of toothpaste is recommended for younger kids, because children inadvertently swallow small amounts while they are brushing, especially when they are not being carefully supervised.
While toothpaste itself is not particularly harmful to health, excessive ingestion of fluoride found in toothpaste has the potential to cause mild fluorosis — or cosmetic discoloration — and small depressions on the surface of a tooth.
There is no risk of discoloration to adults, because, “The chance of development of fluorosis exists through approximate age eight when the teeth are still forming under the gums,” according to the American Dental Association.
So make sure your children are not swallowing too much fluoride while brushing.
Rinsing with tap water has an added benefit.
There is probably fluoride in your tap water, a chemical that has been associated with lowering teeth decay rates. Around 75 percent of community water systems in the U.S. have access to fluoridated water, according to the CDC.
The ADA has endorsed the fluoridation of community water as “safe, beneficial and cost-effective and socially equitable public health measure for preventing dental caries in children and adults.”
To summarize, here are eight facts to remember:
• Start early! Begin brushing when you see your baby’s first tooth.
• A non-fluoride containing toothpaste can be used in children under age 2 (per CDC recommendations). Fluoride-containing toothpastes (per American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), and American Dental Association (ADA) can also be used, especially with children who are at high risk for cavities, as long as you are using the proper amount.
• Apply a small amount of toothpaste — the size of a grain of rice — and press it into the bristles of the toothbrush for kids ages 2 and under.
• Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride-containing toothpaste for kids ages 3 to 6.
• Monitor and help your child while they brush twice a day.
• Make sure your child spits after brushing, and parents should remove any noticeable toothpaste residue left in the mouth.
• Store all toothpaste and fluoride-containing products where your child can’t easily reach them.
Finally, each child’s individual needs may be different, so make sure to consult your doctor and dentists at regularly scheduled checkups.

Meet Dr. Stephanie L. Kinsey
Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Stephanie Kinsey knew she wanted to be a dentist since the age of 6. That’s when she saw Hermey the Elf’s heroism in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. A precocious child, she didn’t wait until dental school to start practicing–she helped classmates pull their loose teeth!
Over the years, she has transformed that childhood dream into a discipline born from years of dedication to the art, craft, and science of cosmetic dentistry.
The Science of Dentistry
Dr. Kinsey received her Doctor of Dental Science (DDS) from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver in 1994, graduating with honors.
She was accepted into a General Practice Residency in Chicago at the Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
She served her residency with distinction and was honored to be invited to serve a second year as chief resident.
The Craft of Dentistry
In dentistry, as in many professions, there are some lessons that only practice can teach. Dr. Kinsey has learned many of these lessons through her 20 years of practice. Since 2005, she has been serving patients in Florida, and she’s built Palencia Dental into one of the most recognized and respected practices in the state. From Jacksonville to St. Augustine, Dr. Kinsey has been recognized for the quality of dentistry she offers.
The Art of Dentistry
Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Kinsey also understands that dentistry is an art, especially cosmetic dentistry. She has trained with some of the top talents in the nation, attending ongoing education at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, the leading institution for cosmetic and neuromuscular dentistry in the country. Due to her extensive training here, she was named an LVI Fellow, an honor few dentists achieve.
She has learned how to achieve smiles that are not only beautiful, they’re functional as well, creating balanced bites to resolve temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ) and related symptoms like headaches. She has also learned how to treat sleep apnea and snoring so that patients and their families can enjoy deep, restorative sleep at night.
She has also learned how interconnected the appearance of the smile and the rest of the face are, and has expanded her dental practice to offer complementary aesthetic treatments like injectables, laser therapy, scar removal, and more.
When you visit Palencia Dental, Dr. Kinsey will utilize her artistic eye as well as her experience and training to ensure that you get dentistry customized to your unique needs.
Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Kinsey, A Well-Connected Professional

Pediatric Dentistry of Willimantic

Every family looks for a good pediatric dentist in Willimantic. Parents already keep their own teeth clean, but finding a good dentist to prevent or perform a cavity filling is important. With Admire Dental in Willimantic, CT, all your family’s dental services will be handled with professionalism and care.
As the head dentist at Admire Dental, Dr. Amandeep Singh works tirelessly with his patients as a leading pediatric dentist in Willimantic. Dr. Singh received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Colorado, School of Dental Medicine. He’s a current member of the American Academy of Cosmetic dentistry, the American Dental Association, and the Connecticut State Dental Society. He specializes in general and cosmetic dentistry. Dr. Singh stays up to date with dental advancements and continues to update his techniques and skills.
Admire Dental provides multiple services for pediatric dentistry. While this includes a cavity filling, it also includes sealants, mouth guards, and extractions.
For most children, molars will grow in around the ages of 5 and 7, with their second set of molars coming in around 11 and 14. Sealants protect your child’s teeth against decay and are used often to protect these molars. Dental sealants can prevent a cavity filling from even happening. A sealant treatment is done when adhesive is put on the teeth that need to be treated. Then, the sealant is spread over as a liquid and as it hardens, a barrier is created between the teeth and any potential plaque that may collect. These sealants can last for approximately 10 years before they need to be reapplied again.
Mouth guards are made by any good pediatric dentist in Willimantic, and Admire Dental is no different. These custom fit mouth guards will add an extra layer of protection to your child’s teeth and jaw. For any contact sport, mouth guards are essential. These special guards are designed to help breathing and communication on the field.
If a cavity filling isn’t the best option for your child’s tooth, an extraction may be in order. Once this is done, it’s important to consider what happens to the empty space. If nothing is done, the jaw can change shape and degenerate, causing major issues with your ability to chew and speak. For the perfect solution, a conversation will be needed to discusst the benefits of a dental implant or a dental bridge.
Your choices for a pediatric dentist in Willimantic are bountiful, but choosing Admire Dental is the best course of action. As a parent, your child’s needs come before anything else. With Dr. Singh, you’re choosing a kind and friendly doctor, specializing in all things dental. Whether it’s a cavity filling, dental implant, or full wisdom teeth extraction, Admire Dental has you covered. To book an appointment, call 860-603-5304 or visit their website at https://admiredentalwillimantic.com/ for more information.
