Daniel Law thoughts and observations.  Why is his last name so bloody difficult to figure out?

This is a quick and frivolous post as opposed to my normally long form ones.  I’ve got it hard for Daniel at the moment; I’m wade through the vast expanse that is the internet looking for merch for him.  Steven merch is like shooting fish in a barrel with how popular he is.  K.K. merch is also easy and super cheap second hand.  But Daniel merch.  Hoooo boy, it takes some time and effort to find.

The first issue around him is his bloody last name.  Which Japanese isn’t equipped to deal with.  This shows in my merch quest as I’ve scrolled through pages and pages of items.  But first:

The Darkhorse translation calls him Daniel Low.

The Funimation translation settles on Daniel Law.

When you listen to the sub and the dub, both the Japanese VA and English VA both clearly say “Law”.  I’d like to also note that the Japanese VA for Steven, Mitsuru Miyamoto, has really good pronunciation for all of the English terms/names he says specifically which makes me really think “Law” is the intended spelling.   The credits also reflect this.

Both versions also settle on the title of Lieutenant.  While the literal translation is Assistant Inspector (keibuho - 警部補).  I’m not sure why they didn’t go with Detective which sounds like the most American term and Inspector being British.  I guess Detective is a role while, Daniel would still have a police rank associated with him. But I know squat about American policing terms and job titles.  Maybe, I should go back and watch some Law and Order and cringe?

Where is this total weirdness around Daniel’s name coming from?  Especially if we get a season three and Marcus also shows up for the Calamity Auction arc.

Now, we all know that having an equal transfer of Law into Japanese can’t happen since there is no way to make say a “La-wa” etc.  The best you can get is to drop down in the r-line to the “ro” combo.  But then you’ve got that pesky “w” you need to do something with.

If you wanted “Low” this would be the easiest way to get it.  Go with “ro” and add the long vowel dash making it “ro-oh”

But we can see this reading of “ro” with a long “o” can be [sighs] Rho, Lau; Low, Loo, Rau, Raux, Roe or Roh.

Okay, this isn’t what happens in the credits.  The Japanese credits write his name out this way.  “ro” with the “u”.  Now, the first hit is “Law”.  Yay!

But then we get also; Loew, Low, Lowe or even Rowe!  Argh! 

So, how does this tie into merch?  Well, how his name is spelled on KKSS merch of course and how to search for it!

For Back 2 Back full color acrylics that were Jump (Festa Specials I’d guess), we get him and Marcus being referred to as Lowe.  ‘Cause they are twin brothers and Daniel is the older one! Another issue with Japanese language mechanics versus English but that’s for another time.  I’d read Daniel to be several years older since he’s referred to as “older brother” in B2B but since you have to place your sibling in age relative to you - Marcus has to say older brother in the original Japanese.    

There is also a small special badge set with Steven and Daniel here, where he is also referred to as “Lowe”.  Did I impulsively buy this?  Yes, yes I did of course!

Yet when we look at other items music/band themed (acoustic guitar) , the American heroes (fighter pilot? why?), ice skating, saloon barkeep/western. he’s got a last name of “Low”.

You might begin to think - okay, it is clear that 1.) there is no official spelling of his name down on paper.  2.) merch designers see ロウ and make an educated guess 3.) his name can’t be “Law”.

Buuutttt let’s go to the actual search function of a Japanese site like Goods Republic.  And what do we find in the character list on the left hand side?  Daniel Law.

Additionally,  you go on Zen Market and access JP Mercari directly, searching with the terms of ダニエル and 血界戦線.  You will get merch that not only pulls up Daniel but all the translated descriptions will always refer to him as Daniel Law.

What have I learned from this?  That until we get season three and Daniel gets a floating info box like below, we will never truly know how his name is spelled.  However, with the sense of humor that Nightow has and his wordplay in English, I really still think the original intent is “Law” because he’s a fucking cop.  Come on, easiest cheese joke ever.

And if he doesn’t get a floating info box in a season three, it means they aren’t giving him full justice due to his increasing role in the series.

CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif Chairs 16th Cabinet Meeting to Approve Major Projects Including Recruitment of 7354 College Teaching Interns (CTIs) Across Punjab

Lahore, 24 September 2024:

Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif presided over 16th provincial cabinet in which the recruitment of 7354 College Teaching Interns (CTIs) was approved across Punjab. CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif sought a comprehensive and uniform housing policy across Punjab. The cabinet paid tribute to the police personnel on performing duty in Rahim Yar Khan and Katcha area. The cabinet approved special allowance for police personnel on performing duty in the Katcha area.

The Chief Minister stopped increasing hostel charges for working women across Punjab. The CM commended Irrigation Minister Kazim Pirzada and the Irrigation Department for no loss of life being caused due to the recent floods. The cabinet approved the issuance of Rs. 50 crore ‘Endowment Fund for Writers Welfare’ under the auspices of the Information and Culture Department. The cabinet, appreciated the peaceful conduct of MDCAT examination in Punjab. It was apprised in the meeting that controversial questions are being raised on the conduct of MDCAT examination in other provinces besides Punjab.

The Chief Minister sought a monthly package plan for the differently-abled visually impaired persons. The cabinet approved a special court for persons with disabilities under the Punjab Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Act. Conditional approval was given to delegate the powers of Sub-Registrar to the Tehsildar and Naib Tehsildar. CM Punjab directed the Board of Revenue to submit a five-year comprehensive housing policy to the Cabinet. The Cabinet rejected the Working Women's Hostels policy for increasing charges by the Women Development Department.

An approval was given to sign an MoU between the Government of Punjab and the United National Office for Project Services (UNOPS) during the meeting. An approval was granted to include Lahore Knowledge Park (Nawaz Sharif Limited City) Bedian Road under the scope of Punjab Central Business District Development Authority. The Cabinet approved the nomination of Member of Gujranwala Development Authority and Vice Chairman of WASA Gujranwala.

An approval was granted to delegate the powers of Sub-Registrar to the transferee of land of legally recognized authority. The amendment of the exchange policy with government land and housing schemes and the reissuance of funds for the upgradation and construction as well as rehabilitation of tertiary care hospitals of specialized healthcare and medical education were approved during the meeting.

The Cabinet approved the request to provide financial assistance for the treatment of Syeda Sara D/O Syed Mian Abu Bakar Kaka Khel. Under the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance 1961, an approval was granted to amend the notification to allow Assistant Director Local Government to perform duties as Chairman of the Conciliation Council. It was informed during the meeting that a ‘Central Portal’ will be set up for transparent recruitment of College Teaching Interns (CTIs) in the government colleges. An approval was granted to make amendment in the Punjab Infrastructure Development Cess Act 2015.

The cabinet approved to delegate leave and pension powers to CEO Health and Education in the districts. The Cabinet approved the appointment of Government Analyst and Provincial Drug Inspector, lection Commission Annual Report 2023 and the appointment of Caretaker Ombudsman Punjab. Provincial Ministers, Chief Secretary, IG Police, Secretaries and other relevant officials attended the meeting.

Breaking the scilence: abusing sexual violence in maharashtra

While the country has not yet recovered from the rape and murder cases in Kolkata, two four-year-old girls were raped by a cleaner of the same school in Badlapur. This incident is shocking. After this news hit the social media, the administration woke up with a rude awakening. The parents go to the police station to file a complaint, but the parents had to wait for twelve hours. The government ordered the suspension of the senior police inspector, assistant sub-inspector and head constable of Badlapur police station for delaying action taking cognisance of the complaint.Angry agitators also vandalised the school by breaking the window panes, benches and doors.Protests started on Tuesday morning due to this incident and the delay at the police station. Due to this agitation, the local train services of Mumbai were affected. Protesters also staged demonstrations on the streets of Badlapur and obstructed major roads and highways. It escalated when some protesters started pelting stones at the police and on the premises of the school where the alleged sexual assault took place.

The fact that the victims were so young and vulnerable makes this incident particularly disturbing. The scene of the crime, a school, heightens this intensity, as it is a place where children feel safe and protected. School is the home of learning , where children grow and develope and the future of our country is formed and hence parents send their children to school with the belief that their child will be safe there and will make themselves and the country better by getting good education. If this incident is coming from here, the outcry of parents and public is understandable.Fear and anxiety now grip parents and guardians, intensifying their vigilance and concern for their children's safety. Moreover, this incident has shattered faith in institutions responsible for protecting and educating children, leaving a trail of emotional trauma in its wake.

Reasi :- Wrestler Surjit Singh of J&K Police lifted 3rd Kudeen (Arnas) dangal 2023 title by defeating wrestler Maankaran of Doom Charri Akhara in Punjab in a very tough bout that lasted for 23 minutes at Village Kudeen in Reasi District.

Winner of 1st malli bout Wrestler Surjit Singh was awarded with cash prize of Rs. 18,000/- along with Mata ki Chunari and turben, while runner-up wrestler Maankaran was given cash prize of Rs. 13,000/-

The second main bout was played between Wrestler Yoov Raj of Raja Madlik Akhara V/s Chouta Munner of Nagrota. This bout was played for 21 minutes and ended in a draw. Both the wrestlers were jointly given cash prize of Rs. 20,000/-.

West Bengal: Four cops who dragged dead minor girl's body on road in Kaliaganj suspended

KALIAGANJ: Four police officers, all in the rank of Assistant Police Sub Inspectors (ASIs), were on Monday suspended for allegedly dragging the body of a minor girl on road at Kaliaganj in Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal last week, a senior officer said.

Of the four ASIs, three are from Kaliaganj Police Station and one is from Raiganj Police Station.

“We have suspended four ASIs for dragging the body of the minor girl on April 21,” the officer said.

On Friday, the dead body of the girl was found floating in a canal in Kaliaganj.

Alleging that she was raped and killed, locals put up road blockades by burning tyres and set several shops on fire.

While removing the body, the police were found to have dragged it on the road.

A video purportedly showing the incident went viral.

A preliminary post-mortem examination report revealed there was no injury to the body, Uttar Dinajpur Superintendent of Police Md Sana Akhtar said.

However, a case was filed under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act based on a complaint filed by the girl’s mother.

A team of officials of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights led by its chairperson Priyank Kanoongo met the deceased’s family on Sunday.

The NCPCR has sought a report from the state DGP on the matter by Monday.

Titled “Gumraah” and translated as “Mislead”, this crime-thriller stars Aditya Roy Kapur as the prime murder suspect. Not one, but there are two Aditya Roy Kapurs in this crime drama. Both are suspects. You have to watch till the end to find out which one of these Aditya Roy Kapurs is the actual murderer! Excuse my joking nature! Sub-inspector Shivani Mathur (Mrunal Thakur) is investigating a man’s murder and while doing so, she comes across two exact look-alike suspects, Arjun Sehgal and Sooraj Rana (Aditya Roy Kapur in a dual role). She is convinced that Sooraj is the murderer while her boss, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Dhiren Yadav (Ronit Roy) thinks Arjun is the one who has committed the murder. Such hardcore action scenes do not suit his image because he may behave like Sunny Deol on-screen but are nowhere near Sunny Deol in terms of physicality. But still, the guy is trying, and that’s what earns him some respect. Average Performances The performances of the actors in Gumraah are not bad, but just about average. Aditya Roy’s acting and dialogue delivery is average throughout the movie. After giving super-flops like "Rashtra Kavach Om", his image sure has deteriorated. The main supporting actors, Mrunal Thakur, and Ronit Roy, carried out their roles as the two police officers well. However, the characters of these two cops, as per the script’s demand, are direly unidimensional with fixed expressions which can at times bore the audiences. The excitement just does not build up! Firstly, Aditya Roy Kapur can be the “talk of the town” among women. But as for us men, we are least bothered to see him or his time-pass activities on the screens. And even we are least bothered to know which one of the Aditya Roy Kapurs has committed the murder. Be it Aditya Roy No. 1 or Aditya Roy No. 2, in the end, it will be Aditya Roy only who will be tagged as a criminal! So the thing is when you know that it is Aditya Roy only who will be convicted at the end, then the story becomes very much uninteresting. Not just predictable, but it can bore you as well. The two look-alikes appear so much similar that the sympathy of the audience does not build up for any of them. No doubt, this may be the reason why this film has underperformed at the box office. Some of these scenes were difficult to comprehend due to their fast-paced nature and dull and dark cinematography. I also feel that the editing of this film was done abruptly by Sahil Nayar just to make it fast-paced within a run duration of 2 hours and 10 minutes. In fact, he ended up making the drama superfast with abrupt scenes here and there due to which it lost its thrill. The Verdict: Gumraah has been directed by Vardhan Ketkar. Ketkar brother, please shower some mercy on the poor audiences. Even one Aditya Roy Kapur is intolerable, and you have shown two of them! And God knows how you came up with the idea of remaking Thadam in Hindi and that too with Aditya Roy Kapur. Thadam was a blockbuster because of its charismatic South Indian cast and the classy directional style in which South Indian films are made, which Bollywood will never be able to copy. So, a blockbuster in South India may turn out to be a disaster if it is remade in Hindi with improper casting and direction. Also, this is the first time I am seeing Mrunal Thakur in a serious role as a police officer. I am used to seeing her in romantic roles and item number songs only. But this film didn’t turn out well for her in spite of her serious acting. Gumraah also showcases how abusive Indian policemen can be. People who are committing crimes in India may not be as lucky as Aditya Roy Kapur. Instead of a gorgeous lady police officer like Mrunal Thakur, one may end up getting arrested by a fat slob of an abusive policeman who himself may look like some child molester. So, don’t get too inspired by this movie. And you should not be because in certain scenes, Aditya Roy Kapur is hung from the ceiling and beaten up black and blue by policemen inside a cell. Gumraah for sure is a crime-thriller but watching this movie is a crime in itself! By the way, the story revolves around murdering for revenge.
