The pounding on the door had Villain jumping. They had been fully prepared to settle in for a quiet night alone. They needed it. It had been a rough week at work and they wanted time to process and blow off steam. The door pounded again. Who could possibly be beating on their door?

Villain opened the door and frowned. Hero leaned on their door frame, one hand draped across a bleeding gunshot wound in their gut, the other braced against the door for support. "H-Hey, V-Villain."

"What do you want?" Villain felt like this could be a trap. It had to be a trap. Why else would Hero be here if not to hurt them?

"I.....I need some help."

"And I'm the person you come to? That's rich," Villain said coldly. This was definitely a trap.

Hero's face fell. They blinked heavily. "I.....I h-h-had n-n-no onnnnnnee el-el-else."

"That's not good." Villain still didn't move to admit Hero into their home. This could still be a trap. But as Hero leaned more and more on the threshold without lashing out, Villain began to suspect that Hero was telling the truth.

"Y-Yeah," Hero said weakly.

Villain could see Hero's legs wobble as they tried to support themself. "Well, fuck. I am absolutely not qualified for this shit," they gestured at Hero's bloody wound. "But I know a place where they are very discreet and can help."

"TH-Th-Thanks," Hero mumbled.

Villain pulled Hero's arm over their shoulder. "Come on. Let's go get you patched up and you can tell me all about how you ended up on my doorstep bleeding from a gunshot wound in your guts."

"Th-Th-Thanks," Hero repeated as they stumbled along with Villain.

Whumpee lay on their back, their hands weakly pressing on the gaping stab wound in their belly. They could feel their hot blood pooling on them and around them, but only just. The world was growing darker and colder, the sounds of Whumper growing fainter and fainter.

They stared up at the ceiling. It was the only thing they could manage to stare at. Their eyes and ears could no longer keep up with the world around them. But they knew things were happening. But Whumpee couldn't be bothered to respond.

"No, no, no," Caretaker's voice came distantly. "No you don't get to do this, Whumpee. I'm here. I'm right here. Stay here. With me. Please, Whumpee."

Caretaker's voice was close and yet so far away. Whumpee could feel Caretaker's warm hands on their own, pressing hard into the wound. Whumpee didn't have the air or energy to cry out.

Caretaker was here. Whumper wasn't. At least they got to see Caretaker once more.

"None of that, Whumpee. Keep your eyes open. Keep awake. I'm here. I'm here. Please, stay here with me," Caretaker's words were urgent and desperate.

Whumpee wanted to listen. Wanted to do as Caretaker begged. But they were so tired and so cold. Their body ached from the torture they had endured at Whumper's hands. They wanted to stay. But they weren't sure they could.

"Here! I'm here! Stay here with me, Whumpee, please!" Caretaker's voice was so far away as Whumpee felt themself sink into the awaiting dark.

With each passing, excruciating second, sidekick looks a little bit worse. As the pool of blood under his shoulder slowly expands, his face turns greyer, his frantic eyes more empty, and his skin colder. Hero presses his bloodstained hands over the wound, holding back a scream. A scream of frustration. A scream of pain that no matter what he does, no matter how much power he wills into his hands, nothing is working. Sidekick is bleeding out.

“Hold on,” hero begs, tears pricking at his eyes, “just hold on…I won’t let you die…”

Sidekick’s eyelids flutter open and closed. He tries to speak, but all that comes out is a trickle of blood down the side of his mouth.

“Just hold on…” hero repeats. The lie tastes like metal on his tongue. At this rate, sidekick is going to die right here in the street.

“It’s really too bad, isn’t it?” comes a cool voice close by. Supervillain. Hero wants to turn and scream at him too. “If only you could heal him. But you can’t, can you?”

Horror turns hero’s blood to ice. The truth dawns on him like the sun on the end of the world.

“You did this. You cursed the wound so it can’t heal.”

“Ding ding ding!” supervillain crows, beaming. “Now you get to watch your precious little buddy die right in front of you. Fitting payback, don’t you think?”

Hero doesn’t have the words to answer. But as sidekick’s breathing gets shallower, he makes a silent vow.

He will destroy supervillain, no matter what it takes.
