Part 2
"Steve, that Byers boy is here for you.”
Steve was in the middle of clearing the dishes from breakfast when he heard. “Okay.”
“We’ll be back late tonight. Money for the landscapers is by the door.”
Jonathan came in just as the man walked out, brow furrowed. “Who the heck was that?”
“Uh, my dad?”
“Is you say so. Look, we gotta hash this thing out. No one else but Dustin was supposed to know.”
Steve leaned back against his sink. “Yeah but if we tell everyone we were lying, then we’re back to square one.”
“You’re back to square one. As I recall, this was a Steve problem.”
“Here’s the thing about problems, they can spread to other people. Like if Dustin continues to pester me about dating, maybe I stop being so generous with my car. Maybe those kids will have to hound someone else for rides.” Steve raised his eyebrows at Jonathan.
Jonathan rubbed at his face. “Everyone else is gonna know by now.”
“I know, I’m sorry. I’ll make it up to you.”
“Yeah you will.”
---------------------------------
Eddie was in the middle of walking down the street, ignoring the dirty looks when who should he see, sipping milkshakes but the new set of lovebirds. He knew most people thought of him as shady so he had no shame ducking behind a mailbox to watch them from across the street.
To most, it definitely looked like just a couple of guys being pals. And before, Eddie would have seen it like that too. But now that he knew the truth about their relationship, he couldn’t help but read more into Steve’s smile.
And Jonathan seemed relaxed in a way that he only got when he was high. Just what in the world did they talk about when they were alone?
“I wanna go. And I wanna study photography. But like, how do I explain that to my mom?”
“You think she’s gonna fight you or something?”, Steve asked.
“No, not really. If anything, she’ll be mostly supportive. But unless you’re a big name, you can’t make a lot of money. And I know that’s gonna be her first thought. ‘How are you gonna pay your bills? Or tuition?’ That kind of thing.”
“I mean, personally, I wasn’t always a fan of your work. But if you have a dream, you should go for it. Even if you failed, at least you tried. I don’t even have...” Steve trailed off and swirled his shake around.
“Have, what?”
“Even if I could get into college, what would I even do?”
“Sorry man, I’m not a career counselor”, Jonathan said.
“You’re supposed to offer solutions and ways to help solve my problems. Some boyfriend you are.”
“Bring it up with the Better Business Bureau.”
Eddie bit his fist as he watched them. And things just went downhill after that. Whenever Steve and Jonathan were around, and they were surrounded only by their closest friends, they were holding hands. Or they were standing really close together, or sitting really close. And Eddie couldn’t stand it. It sort of felt like Jonathan had stolen his spot. But could he really claim something that he’d never had?
Meanwhile, Steve was putting up an impressive front but only because he was avoiding alone time with Robin like the plague. Which she could tell he was doing so she had no choice but to corner him. Her plan involved going into his room, stealing some of his hair products, and waiting.
And like clockwork, he realized he was out, went to the store, and Robin trapped him in aisle 6.
“Spill the beans, Harrington.”
Steve looked down at his basket of products, then Robin, and realized he’d been played.
“Robin, seriously? You know better than to mess with my hair.”
“And you know better than to keep secrets from me. Especially secrets like this.”
“Please tell me you still have my stuff and didn’t just dump it.”
“Of course I do. I’m not an evil witch.”
“Good.” Steve began to put the products back on the shelf. She may have been conniving, but at least she didn’t make him spend extra money. It was only when they were back in his car that she started the conversation again.
“You and Jonathan....makes zero sense. Especially since you’re straight.”
“Who said I’m straight? I’m allowed to appreciate guys.”
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner then? Hm?”
“Because!”, Steve shouted with fake indignation as he tried to stall for an explanation. “Because, I called one of your crushes a Muppet and I didn’t want you to tease me about Jonathan, okay?”
“Steven, I’m not a child. I don’t hold grudges like that. And Jonathan’s fine. Isn’t it weird though? To date the ex of your ex?”
“We’ve seen our fair share of weird stuff. Me and Jonathan don’t even make the top ten.”
“Point taken. So like...what do you like about him, I guess?”
Steve smiled at her attempt. “Are you trying to do guy talk?”
“Yes! I thought it might be doable since you’re gay but it’s still talking about dudes and I feel like I’m horribly out of my depth. How can you do girl talk so easy?”
“Well, I like both, so...”
“Bullshit.”
“How is that bullshit? I’ve dated girls and guys. Do you only like one kind of sandwich?”
Robin was quiet for a moment. “Just when I think I’m done discovering you, you get a little bit deeper.”
“I’m a man of many talents.”

The Unofficial Black History Book
Mary Beatrice Davidson Kenner (1912-2006)
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mary Beatrice Davidson Kenner is a forgotten black inventor who changed the way menstrual pads operated, but her idea was turned down because of the color of her skin, and she was later not given credit for her invention.
This is her story.
Mary Beatrice Davidson Kenner was born on May 17th, 1912, in Monroe, North Carolina. She came from a family of inventors. Her father, Sidney Nathaniel Davidson (1890–1958), patented a clothing press that would fit into suitcases but never made money off of the invention, which failed. Her grandfather invented a light signal for trains, and her sister, Mildred Davidson Austin Smith (1916–1993), invented and commercially sold board games.
As a child, Kenner was interested in creating tools to make everyday life more convenient. She had her first idea when she was six years old—a self-oiling door hinge—but the idea never came to fruition. She would draw her ideas throughout her childhood. One of her ideas was a portable ashtray that would attach to the cigarette carton and a sponge tip that would soak the rainwater off an umbrella.
When Mary turned 12, her family moved to Washington, D.C., and she would often visit the United States Patent and Trademark Office to see if anyone had beaten her to patent any of her ideas.
Side Note: The Patent System - that started in 1787, was not open to African Americans who were born into slavery, even if freed, as it did not consider them citizens.
After graduating high school, Mary enrolled at Howard University but later dropped out when she couldn't afford tuition. She took on odd jobs and became a federal employee during WWII. She worked for the Census Bureau and later for the General Accounting Office. Mary also chaperoned younger women who attended dances at military bases in the Washington, D.C., area.
She met soldier and renowned boxer James "Jabbo" Kenner and married him in 1951. They adopted five boys but had no kids of their own. She retired from government work and opened a flower shop while continuing to work on her inventions.
By 1957, Kenner had saved enough money to file her first patent for an elastic belt that held sanitary napkins in place. Adhesive Maxi Pads didn't exist at the time.
How the invention worked was that a moisture-proof napkin pocket was built into the belt, which prevented more leaks than the cloth pads and rags women were using at the time.
One company. 'The Sonn-Nap-Pack' was interested in her invention and offered to market it. But when they discovered she was a black woman, they turned her down instantly.
"One day, I was contacted by a company that expressed an interest in my marketing idea. I was so jubilant...I saw houses, cars, and everything else about to come my way. Sorry to say, when they found out I was black, their interest dropped." She said in Laura F. Jeffery's Book, 'Amazing American Inventors of the 20th Century'
Because of racism, they did not patent the sanitary belt until 30 years after Kenner introduced it. But her invention was a crucial step for women's comfort and revolutionized menstrual hygiene during a time when women had limited options.
Between 1956 and 1987, Kenner received five total patents for her household and personal inventions. A backwasher that one could mount on the shower or bathtub wall was among Kenner's inventions for which she received a patent. When her sister was confined to a bed due to multiple sclerosis in 1976, it inspired her to file her third patent.
A special attachment for a walker or wheelchair that included a hard-surfaced tray and a soft pocket for carrying items. Also, a toilet paper holder that made sure the loose end of the roll was always reachable.
Kenner never became rich from her inventions, but her ideas centered on accessibility and ease and paved the way for more inventions in the future.
Mary Beatrice Davidson Kenner died at the age of 93 on January 13th, 2006.

Howard University (Howard or simply HU) is a private, federally chartered research HBCU. It is classified among "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity" and accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Tracing its history to 1867, from its outset Howard has been nonsectarian and open to people of all sexes and races. It offers undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees in more than 120 programs, more than any other HBCU in the nation. Shortly after the end of the American Civil War, members of The First Congregational Society of Washington considered establishing a theological seminary for the education of black clergymen. Within a few weeks, the project expanded to include a provision for establishing a university. Within two years, the University consisted of the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Medicine. The new institution was named for General Oliver Otis Howard, a Civil War hero, who was both the founder of the University and, at the time, Commissioner of the Freedmen's Bureau. Howard served as President of the University from 1869 to 1874. Congress chartered Howard on March 2, 1867, and much of its early funding came from endowment, private benefaction, and tuition. In its first five years of operation, Howard University educated over 150,000 freed slaves. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #hbcu https://www.instagram.com/p/CpSRtE5LLDu/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

ID. Tweet by Ward Q. Normal @WardQNormal: My new hobby is taking graphs of economic data over time and indicating the year that Ronald Reagan was inaugurated, in case people find that helpful or informative. End ID.
ID. A series of line graphs, each including an arrow pointing from a cutout of Reagan's face to the data point for 1981, as follows:
Title: Life Expectancy versus Healthcare Spending Over Time, from 1970 to 2014. The USA is compared to many other countries (Chile, South Korea, Israel, Greece, Spain, Italy, Japan, Australia, France, Luxembourg, Canada, New Zealand, Finland, UK, Sweden, Austria, Belgium, Netherlands, Ireland, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland). Before Reagan, USA followed the same trend as the other countries. After Reagan, USA has consistently spent up to $3,000 more per capita on healthcare for up to 5 years less of life expectancy.
Title: Top 1% versus Bottom 50% national income shares in the US and Western Europe, 1980-2016: Diverging income inequality trajectories. In 2016, 12% of national income was received by the top 1% and 22% by the bottom 50% in Western Europe, compared to 20% and 13% in the US. In 1980, 10% was received by the top 1% in and 23.5% by the bottom 50% in Western Europe, compared to 11% and 20.5% in the US. Source: WID.world (2017). See wir2018.wir.world for data series and notes.
Title: Percent Increase, Since 1970, in the Annual Cost to Attend the University of Illinois, the Median Household Income in Illinois, and the Minimum Wage in Illinois. Before Reagan, tuition and fees, median income, and minimum wage all increased at the same percentages. After Reagan, when all categories had grown 100%, tuition and fees grew almost parabolically to 1400% in 2013 while median income grew linearly to 500% and minimum wage crawled to 400%.
Title: United States Debt in 2014 Dollars and as Percent of GDP. Before Reagan, debt as percent of GDP had been decreasing parabolically from 120% in 1945 to 30% in 1981 while debt in 2014 dollars had decreased slightly before remaining steady at around 2.5 trillion. After Reagan, debt both as percent of GDP and in dollars increased almost linearly with the exception of the dip in 2001. In 2014, debt was just over 100% of GDP at $18 trillion.
Title: Federal Debt: Total Public Debt as Percent of Gross Domestic Product. From 1965 to 1981, public debt as percent of GDP had linearly decreased from 40% to 30%. Debt as percent of GDP then rose linearly to a peak of 65% in 1995, dipped to 55% in 2001, increased linearly to 65% in 2005, and trended logarithmically to 105% in 2020. Source: FRED.
Title: Income Gains Widely Shared in Early Postwar Decades – But Not Since Then: Real family income between 1947 and 2017, as a percentage of 1973 level. Real family income among the top 5%, median, and bottom 20% as a percentage of 1973 level was about the same from 1945 (50%) to 1981 (105%). After 1981, the top 5% continued along the same trend to reach 180% of 1973 levels in 2017 while median and bottom 20% saw less growth to 130% and 110% of 1973 levels. Source: CBPP calculations based on US Census Bureau Data.
Title: Top Marginal Tax Rate from 1966 to 2014. From 1966 to 1981, the top marginal tax rate remained about 70% except for a spike to 75% in the late 1960s. The tax rate then decreased to 50% in 1982 and later 28% in 1986. The rate increased to 39.6% in the 1990s, dipped to 35% in 2001 through 2012, and increased back to 39.6% in 2012.

Maximizing⁤ Your CNA Training Investment
To ⁢make the⁣ most out of your CNA ‍training investment, consider the ‍following practical tips:

Additional Considerations Before Enrolling
Before ‌you decide on a‌ CNA training program, here are some additional factors to keep in mind:
Curriculum Quality: Ensure the program is accredited⁣ and meets your state’s requirements for⁢ certification.

Installment Loans in BC: Flexible Financing for Every Situation
When life throws unexpected financial challenges your way, securing the right kind of loan can make all the difference. In British Columbia, Installment Loans in BC offer a flexible and practical solution for managing these challenges. Whether you're dealing with an emergency expense, planning a big purchase, or trying to consolidate debt, installment loans can provide the financial support you need with the convenience of manageable repayment terms.
What Are Installment Loans in BC?
An Installment Loan in BC is a type of loan where you borrow a specific amount of money and agree to repay it in equal installments over a set period of time. These loans can range from a few hundred to thousands of dollars, depending on the lender and your financial needs. What makes them particularly appealing is their flexibility—installment loans come with predictable repayment schedules, typically ranging from a few months to several years.
Key Benefits of Installment Loans in BC
Predictable PaymentsOne of the primary advantages of Installment Loans in BC is the fixed repayment structure. This means you'll know exactly how much you need to pay each month, making budgeting and financial planning easier.
Quick Access to FundsWhether it's a medical emergency, car repair, or an unforeseen expense, installment loans are often processed quickly. In many cases, you can receive your loan within a day or two, allowing you to address urgent financial needs without delay.
Flexible Loan AmountsInstallment loans provide flexibility in terms of the loan amount. Depending on your needs, you can borrow anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand. This makes it an ideal option for various financial situations, from small personal expenses to larger, more significant purchases.
Use for Any PurposeUnlike some other types of loans that are designated for specific purposes (like a mortgage or auto loan), Installment Loans in BC can be used for almost anything. Whether you're looking to consolidate debt, pay medical bills, cover tuition costs, or renovate your home, an installment loan gives you the freedom to use the funds as you see fit.
Opportunity to Build CreditIf you make consistent, on-time payments, Installment Loans in BC can help improve your credit score. Lenders report your payment history to credit bureaus, which means that responsible borrowing can enhance your creditworthiness over time.
When Should You Consider Installment Loans in BC?
While Installment Loans in BC can be beneficial in many situations, they are particularly useful for:
Debt Consolidation: If you're juggling multiple high-interest debts, an installment loan can help consolidate them into one manageable payment, potentially lowering your overall interest rate.
Emergency Expenses: Whether it's an unexpected medical bill or a vehicle breakdown, installment loans provide a quick, reliable solution to handle urgent financial needs.
Large Purchases: If you're planning a big purchase and need extra funds, an installment loan can help you cover the costs without draining your savings.
Credit Repair: If you're working to rebuild your credit, responsibly repaying an installment loan can help you demonstrate your ability to manage debt and improve your credit score.
How to Qualify for Installment Loans in BC
Getting approved for an installment loan in British Columbia is generally straightforward. Lenders will typically require a few basic documents, such as proof of income, identification, and sometimes a credit check. While a strong credit score can help you secure better rates, many lenders offer installment loans with flexible eligibility criteria, making them accessible even to those with less-than-perfect credit.
Repaying Your Installment Loan in BC
Repayment for Installment Loans in BC is typically done through monthly installments, and the terms are clearly outlined in your loan agreement. You’ll have a set amount to pay each month, which includes both principal and interest. Some lenders may offer early repayment options without penalties, allowing you to pay off the loan ahead of schedule if your financial situation improves.
Final Thoughts
Installment Loans in BC provide a flexible, reliable solution to a variety of financial situations. Whether you need funds for an emergency, a large purchase, or consolidating debt, these loans offer manageable payments and fast access to funds. With their clear terms and straightforward repayment options, they are an excellent choice for anyone looking to maintain financial stability in times of need.
If you're considering an Installment Loan in BC, be sure to shop around, compare terms, and choose a reputable lender who can offer you the best rates and repayment plans that suit your needs.
