A Jewellery campaign photographed on assignment from earlier this year which involved the Brand Vidyuta from Jaipur using authentic Indigenous Women from the Protected & Vulnerable Dongria Kanda tribe in the Niyamgiri hills in #Odisha
The project involved scouting the #indigenous women in Southern Odisha, some from Naxal geographies, during Peak Christmas and New Years in 2023. The scouting involved travelling over 3,500 kms from Bhubaneswar over 12 days supported locally by Chitr Sanstha (www.chitr.org) as part of their Odisha outreach program, where food distribution was also carried out in over 30 villages that the 5 member team visited.
With support from tribal authorities and councils, district administration and state authorities in Odisha, the #Indigenous women along with family members and tribal authorities travelled to Jaipur for the photo shoot and experienced sightseeing, shopping in the Culturally rich Jaipur. Most were travelling outside their district for the first time enabling the members of the tribe to have a lived experience of Rajasthan culture, urban life and bespoke handcrafted #jewellery firsthand.
Vidyuta is a Neo-ethnic #luxury jewelry brand that is bespoke and handcrafted, making each piece unique.
Since these images were for outdoors and Premium Jewellery exhibitions primarily that have been carried out in London, Dubai & #Delhi earlier this year, these were photographed with a 100 mp Medium format system by #Fujifilm, photographed over 2 days on the outskirts of Jaipur.
The background was sets made in the way the #DongriyaKanda tribe decorate their mud huts by Burning Rubber Tyre and painting this paste on mud walls. Certain Traditional cultural clothing motifs very unique to the Dongriya Kanda were adopted and embroidered in the blouses and certain jewelry pieces.

Gond: Tribal Art of the Heart of India
Gond art is a traditional form of painting that originated in Madhya Pradesh, India. It is mainly practiced by the Gond tribe living in that state. However, it can also be found in other states like Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Maharashtra, and Chhattisgarh.
The Gonds are the largest tribal community in India, and their art is highly valued for its cultural heritage. Gond paintings showcase the tribe's lifestyle, their surroundings, and the wildlife in their area. These paintings also depict their beliefs, mythical creatures, and characters from their folklore, all of which are an essential part of their artwork. The Gond tribe believes that having good pictures around them brings good luck and positive energy. Animals play a significant role in their art, as the tribe believes that all beings are spiritual and sacred.
Gond paintings are filled with bright and lively colors like orange, yellow, blue, and red. They are created using carefully drawn lines and dots that bring the paintings to life. The artists use natural colors derived from sources like flowers, stones, and other materials to create these beautiful artworks.
The word “Gond” comes from the Dravidian expression kond, meaning “the green mountain.” The work of Gond artists is rooted in their folk tales and culture, and thus story-telling is a strong element of every painting.
Gond art stems from the belief that a good image brings good fortune. This underlying belief has inspired the Gonds to decorate their homes and floors with traditional tattoos and motifs. Today, Gond art products such as Gond paintings on wood, painted wooden trays, and boxes have become extremely popular globally.
It is a matter of pleasure that Gond art has not escaped the eyes of art connoisseurs of the country. The Government of India is making efforts for the preservation of Gond painting. Other well-wishers went further and created Must Art Gallery – the world's first art gallery dedicated to Gond art. Unlike so many other treasures of Indian culture that have slipped through the cracks of time and are lost forever, the future of Gond art looks as vibrant and colourful as the paintings

Who Was Birsa Munda: Tribal Hero, Freedom Fighter
Who Was Birsa Munda: Tribal Hero, Freedom Fighter
Birsa Munda Chowk in Delhi.
Birsa Munda Chowk – The space is located next to Sarai Kale Khan ISBT and memorializes the renowned tribal head and activist, Birsa Munda. Many VIPs including the Union Home Minister Amit Shah were present at the inauguration of the square wherein a statue weighing 3000 kg was dedicated to muǵdā. Birsa Munda is a memory appreciated and reviled in equal measure, that of a man who fought against the British Government and acted as the voice of the tribal people. Thus, changing the name in the resources material is not only aimed at bestowing respect to the great son of the soil but also protecting his self-proclaimed identity during his contribution towards the patriotic awakening in India.
Birsa Munda (1875-1900) was a visionary tribal leader or hero and social reformist deeply revered among the Munda tribe and other indigenous communities of India. He emerged as one of the key leaders from India who orchestrated a movement against the British Raj, and led the famous Munda Rebellion, also referred to as Ulgulan - The Great Tumult, in the late 19th century.
Birsa Munda was a well-known freedom fighter social reformer and religious head of the Munda Tribe in India. He was an active participant in the Indian independence struggle in particular in the Jharkhand region and states around it, opposing the British colonization as well as the subjugation of tribal peoples.
Early Life and Background of Birsa Munda
Born on the fifteenth day of November, in the year 1875, Birsa Munda was from the village Ulihatu, which is in the present-day Khunti district of Jharkhand, India. He was a member of the Munda tribes who are indigenous to the Chota Nagpur Plateau region. The childhood of Birsa was unfortunately surrounded by misery encountered through colonial rule and almost unendurable conditions of existence of the tribal populations.
Family and Early Influences
Birsa’s family belonged to an agrarian society that was also victimized by the colonial British land policies and the Zamindari system. The father, Sugna Munda, and the mother, Karmi Hatu, were both laborers. The Mundas like several other tribal communities had great cultural and spiritual ties to the land which was slowly taken away by colonizers and even local landlords.
Impact and Legacy
Birsa Munda and his rebellion have been suppressed but it did usher in some positive developments such as the changes in the legislation on land and the protection of Tribals from exploitation. His fight highlighted the issues and the conditions of tribal people and forced the British to think about changes.
The fact that he was martyred when he was only 25 years of age turned him into an icon of valor and defiance and motivated countless others to keep fighting for freedom and justice.
Birsa Munda succumbed to death at the very tender age of 25 years on the 9th of June, 1900, in undisclosed situations while in the hands of the British. However, even after his early demise, he made a contribution that will never be forgotten, and he is revered as a hero who died for the oppressed people’s rights.
4. Cultural Icon:
At present, he is revered and honored as a designer culture, where he has statues, universities built in his honor, and throngs of individuals celebrating his day of birth – whose date is marked on the calendar.
To many, including the people of Jharkhand and Odisha, Birsa Munda is neither a mere symbol of defiance alone, but a figure of tribal social and cultural pride, celebrated all across the nation.
The figure of Birsa Munda is overwhelmingly potent even today, especially for the tribal people of India. His works are remembered every year on November 15, the day he was born, which is a public holiday in the state of Jharkhand.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla Inaugurates KIIT School of Public Policy
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Sunday inaugurated the KIIT School of Public Policy, commending India’s democratic strength and transparent policies and advocating for citizen-centric policies that involve all stakeholders, ensure equal rights and is answerable to the people.
Speaking to an audience of academicians, policymakers, Judges and students, Birla emphasized the importance of public policy in shaping the future of the country. “India is the world’s largest democracy, and its diversity is its strength. A well-drafted public policy is the foundation of a strong nation,” he stated, noting that the world is now looking to India for its peace-promoting policies, based on the principle of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” or “the world is one family.” The Speaker lauded KIIT and KISS founder Dr. Achyuta Samanta for his vision and efforts in empowering tribals and the marginalized.
Odisha Legislative Assembly Speaker Surama Padhy highlighted the critical role the new school will play in shaping future leaders and creating policies for a prosperous Odisha. “For a ‘Vikashit Odisha’ (Developed Odisha), good policy and strong leadership are essential. This school is the need of the hour,” she said in her address.
The School will offer a One Year Master Program from the ensuing academic session. The knowledge partners are Indian Council of World Affairs and United Nations System Staff College.
Deputy Chief Minister of Odisha, KV Singhdeo commended Dr. Samanta’s contributions to education. “Public Policy is for the people, not individual goals. Odisha is fortunate that Achyuta Samanta is working for the cause of education,” he noted. Odisha’s Law, Works and Excise Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan called the new Public Policy school “another feather in KIIT’s crown.”
Otto Ramon Sonnenholzner Sper, former Vice-President of Ecuador, stressed the importance of trust and respect for diversity in building strong institutions.
The inauguration also saw speeches from prominent figures like Dr. Jafar Javan, Director of the United Nations System Staff College in Turin, Italy, who called the launch of the school “a milestone for KIIT and India.” He praised Dr. Samanta for his dedication to social change and highlighted the ongoing partnership between the UN and KIIT, including future collaboration on the Nelson Mandela Project for Social Change.
Lok Sabha MP from Bhubaneswar Aparajita Sarangi delivered an inspiring speech, emphasizing the extraordinary achievements of Dr. Samanta. “One life is not enough to achieve what Achyuta Samanta has achieved. He has demonstrated that every moment in life is important,” she said, lauding Samanta’s humility and dedication to education.
She also highlighted the significance of the new Public Policy school, which will offer a one-year course to 60 students. “Public Policy is essentially what a Government chooses to do or not to do. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in 2014, ‘I want minimum government and maximum governance.’ This vision can be achieved through the right policy design, and I am confident this school will play a pivotal role in that journey,” she remarked.
Shombi Sharp, UN Resident Coordinator in India, also emphasized the global impact of the new school. “This institution will contribute to global knowledge and foster the leaders of tomorrow,” he said, praising Dr. Samantha’s visionary leadership.
Nutan Kapoor Mahawar, Additional Secretary at the Indian Council of World Affairs, described the school as a timely initiative that would shape both Indian governance and international relations. “This school is a forward-looking response to contemporary demands. It will foster deeper alliances among world leaders,” she remarked.
Padma Shri and filmmaker Dr. Chandraprkash Dwivedi emphasized that public policies should be one that is committed to the welfare of the nation while Professor Emeritus, KIIT School of Law Prof. N.L. Mitra said the school will produce the future policy makers who will shape the destiny of the nation.
Dr. Samanta expressed his gratitude for the recognition of his institutions, noting that the visit by the Speaker marked the second time Om Birla has honored KIIT and KISS during his tenure. Dr. Samanta reiterated his commitment to social upliftment through education, which has been acknowledged by various leaders, including in Parliament. KIIT Chancellor Dr. Ashok Parija, Vice Chancellor Professor Saranjit Singh, Senior Director of Asia Society Policy Institute Akshay Mathur, among others, were present at the event.

Ganesha Painting: Celebrating the Remover of Obstacles
Introduction
Ganesha, the elephant-headed deity, is one of the most beloved and widely worshipped gods in Hinduism. Revered as the remover of obstacles and the god of beginnings, Ganesha's image is a common fixture in homes, temples, and art across India. Ganesha paintings, in particular, hold a special place in Indian art for their spiritual significance and artistic beauty. In this blog, we will explore the history, symbolism, and various styles of Ganesha paintings, along with their cultural importance.
Historical Context
The worship of Ganesha dates back to ancient times, with roots in the Vedic period. His distinct image with the elephant head and human body has inspired countless artists over centuries, resulting in a rich tradition of Ganesha paintings that spans different eras and regions. These paintings not only serve as objects of devotion but also as masterpieces of Indian art.
Symbolism and Themes
Ganesha paintings are rich in symbolism, each element carrying profound meanings:
Elephant Head: Symbolizes wisdom, intelligence, and understanding. The large ears signify the ability to listen to prayers and devotees.
Trunk: The versatile trunk represents adaptability and efficiency. It signifies Ganesha's ability to overcome obstacles.
Four Arms: Typically, Ganesha is depicted with four arms, holding various objects like a conch, a lotus, a weapon, and a sweet, each symbolizing different aspects of life and spiritual practices.
Mouse: The mouse, often shown at Ganesha's feet, represents desire and ego. Ganesha using the mouse as his vehicle signifies the ability to control and ride over these vices.
Modaka (Sweet): The sweet in Ganesha’s hand symbolizes the rewards of a wise and simple life.
Styles and Techniques
Ganesha paintings are created in various traditional and contemporary styles, each offering a unique portrayal of the deity:
Tanjore Paintings: Known for their opulent use of gold foil and vibrant colors, Tanjore paintings of Ganesha are rich and detailed, often showing him adorned with intricate jewelry and divine symbols.
Madhubani Paintings: This folk art style from Bihar is characterized by bold lines, bright colors, and intricate patterns. Madhubani Ganesha paintings are vibrant and often depict the deity with traditional motifs and designs.
Pattachitra: Originating from Odisha and West Bengal, Pattachitra paintings feature intricate details and mythological themes. Ganesha in Pattachitra art is often depicted with elaborate backgrounds and detailed ornamentation.
Warli Art: This tribal art form from Maharashtra uses simple geometric shapes and lines to create striking depictions. Warli Ganesha paintings are minimalistic yet powerful, emphasizing the deity’s form through simplicity.
Contemporary Art: Modern artists experiment with abstract forms, vibrant palettes, and mixed media to create contemporary Ganesha paintings. These works often blend traditional iconography with modern aesthetics, appealing to a wide audience.
Cultural Significance
Ganesha paintings hold significant cultural and spiritual value. They are often placed at the entrance of homes and businesses to invoke the deity’s blessings for prosperity and the removal of obstacles. During festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi, these paintings become focal points for worship and celebration.
Choosing a Ganesha Painting
When selecting a Ganesha painting, consider the following:
Intention: Determine the purpose of the painting. Is it for spiritual devotion, home decor, or as a gift?
Style: Choose a style that resonates with you. Traditional forms like Tanjore or Madhubani offer a classic appeal, while contemporary styles provide a modern touch.
Quality: Look for detailed craftsmanship and high-quality materials, especially if the painting includes elements like gold foil or intricate beadwork.
Conclusion
Ganesha paintings are a beautiful amalgamation of spirituality and art. They capture the essence of Ganesha's divine attributes while showcasing the rich diversity of Indian artistic traditions. Whether for personal devotion, aesthetic appreciation, or cultural interest, a Ganesha painting can be a cherished addition to any space, offering both visual delight and spiritual solace.
