Chapter 18
Naell and Owly first took a break at the nearest cafĂŠ in the inner circle. As they were taking a break, he decided to get a change of clothes for the occasion.
His white robe lined with red accents was a rather extravagant cloth to wear, but since it was a gift given by Estra from Sestra, he happily accepted.
After a little while, Naell and Owly managed to locate the Adventurer's guild. It was lacking compared to the Star's mansion but was quite extravagant compared to its establishments nearby.
Naell recalled in the novel that the guild house was so large, it could house hundreds of adventurers. Its burnt umber walls represented a magnificent structure of magic and aura.
Upon entering, Naell and Owly felt that the atmosphere was quite rowdy. Some were looking for members or commissioning quests on the mission boards, while others were just laying low, happily drinking and eating food with their companions.
Naell immediately stood in line as the queue was already long. Some gazes were thrown at him since he was young and good-looking, but again as often as not he misinterpreted it as hostility.
After a while, Naell was already in front of the receptionist. As the first impression was important, he bowed down with his right hand at his chest, showing an elegant and respectful performance.
"Greetings Milady."
"..."
She was blushing and could not react.
Tahina Runata graduated at the capital school of Autumn Kingdom last year. Due to her outstanding grades and magic, she was offered a job as a receptionist in the capital. As someone who didn't enjoy bloodshed but had a luxurious lifestyle, she happily accepted the job.
Tahina's black long hair and grey eyes complimented her white pinkish skin. She was tall for a girl and made use of this with her fashion sense. Her curves showed even as she wore a standard white shirt tucked beneath a simple black vest, matching her auburn button up skirt.
Tahina was so beautiful that being courted was a normal occurrence for her, yet most men in the adventurer's guild were afraid of her. They had witnessed her powerful wind magic that almost killed a pervert with the simple snap of her fingers.
⢠What's wrong with her? HOOT. â˘
⢠I... don't know. â˘
Tahina's stunned look lasted only for a couple of seconds, as her professionalism brought her back. She managed to speak without a hint of despair, but her reddened cheeks would not easily disappear.
"Greetings Sire, I'm Tahina. What can I do for you?"
"Lady Tahina, I'm here to register as an adventurer."
Tahina was expecting the young-looking noble guy to commission a quest, but registering wasn't new to her either. She recalled months earlier that there too was a group of good-looking ladies and guys that registered and caused an uproar at the guild house. Looking back, she was curious if this young boy here was their friend.
With a [ poof ] Naell handed the recommendation letter to Tahina. After receiving it, she was surprised seeing it was also from the Beryldot estate and noticed the snow crystal emblem embedded in it.
She knew of a rumor that the trashy son of a pitiful Baron caused an uproar, resulting in his engagement being broken by the daughter of a Duke.
"Young master, please do follow me."
Tahina was certain that it was impossible this guy was the rumored trash.
'Black trashy hair and almond dead eyes as they described him.'
Since he, fortunately, had the recommendation letter of the Baron of Beryldot, some tests would be skipped, and they would only need to meet the vice-guild leader.
Yet before they could even get far from the crowd, a rowdy and bulky guy that seemed to be in his 50s, approached them with a hearty laugh. Soon the crowd got noisier and bigger.
"HAHAHA-!"
"Guild master!"
Tahina was one of the staff who greeted the bulky man. His crew cut red hair radiated authority even with his uncle like demeanor, but what caught Naell's attention the most were his black eyes that seemed to discern a person's ability from ones look. Not to mention the necklace that had the design of a hammer on his neck, was also intriguing.
"Tahina, who is this boy?"
Before Tahina could even reply as she handed the letter to the guildmaster himself, Naell calmly spoke, his fearful eyes yet again emitting a cold look.
"Greetings, Guildmaster. I am Naell Beryldot." Naell's graceful bow soon followed his words.
"HAHAHA-! Aren't you the rumored trashy son of Fharom?"
"Indeed I am."
Tahina gasped, she couldn't believe this boy was the rumored trash, yet she could only hide her expression with her smile of professionalism. The black hair was as white as snow and the almond eyes were as bright as a red diamond.
The guildmaster then looked at Owly with a grin.
"And who is this companion of yours?"
⢠HOOT, wow I feel like I'm being figured out. â˘
Owly and Naell were sure that this guy was the real deal, since both of them could not entirely read his aura, but an oozing strength was slightly gushing out.
"He is Owly."
â˘...â˘
"..."
"HAHAHA-! That's a nice name for... awhile..."
Naell and Owly flinched at the word and were impressed with his discerning eyes. The guildmaster knew they were misunderstanding him, as both of their eyes were sparkling with respect.
"Ahem! It was written in your letter so... relax, I am acquainted with both of your mothers."
The guildmaster then added on while looking at Tahina,
"Tahina, if you please."
"As you command." With a snap of her fingers, Naell, Owly the guildmaster, and herself teleported to the guildmaster's office.
Naell got excited as it was his first time experiencing that kind of magic.
Teleportation was possible if certain conditions were met, such as placing spatial accessories in areas while activating the necessary codes that were known only by those working in that place.
Even in the novel, it was vaguely explained as the company who made the spatial accessories, Escuel co. was very secretive.
They were all seated down with cups of tea and assorted cakes that were suited for their situation.
"I apologize for my late introduction. I am Odino Thorton, the guildmaster of all guilds."
"Ahem, please do not forget your other name, guildmaster."
"Urgh... That embarrassing title... Aigooo."
Tahina interjected as she dramatically added on,
"AHEM! JACKhammer, the one who inherited the name, and the one who had a draw bout with the former JACK of All Blades, Leonard Cross."
*******
Marquis Metero W. Star,
Warm standard greetings, Marquis.
Even the contents are just formality.
Do pardon if we could not meet.
Of course, not that you mind.
Nevertheless, I'm here to report
That my son is in the capital.
Neither Naell nor I need your aid.
Everything on our side, we'll settle it.
Everything, rest assured.
Do please pardon our independence.
You do not have to mind.
Only a standard greeting.
Under the pretext of formality.
With your utmost respect,
Fharom Beryldot
.
.
.
Later that night, upon returning to their mansion, the Marquis could not hide his chuckle upon reading the letter from Captain Aestero. The content was ridiculous, to begin with, but what made it worthwhile to read was how Fharom insisted to not drag Naell to their side of the family.
"So captain, why do you think the rumors are more than what it seems?"
"Young master Naell at first glance could be said as carefree but..."
"But?" The one who interjected was Sarah W. Star. She was also curious since Captain Aestero never once said complimentary words towards anyone besides the Star household.
"His demeanor was more of a calculative man's. I could see him as someone who would have planted the rumors themselves."
"How could you even say that from a guy you just met, Aes." Teasingly said Sarah, her platinum blond hair and golden eyes completely matched her bright grin.
Nonetheless, the reply given to them by Aestero made them even more curious than a cat.
"Because he was just like the former Marquis, Roetem Star... your father."
It was then rumored that both the siblings' laughter had even reached the castle of Taglagas.

why your op sakura auâs are valid (imo)
One of the best and most creative things Iâve seen come from the Sakura fandom are the power up/background exploration AUâs that take Sakura--the heroine who was woefully underdeveloped compared to Sasuke and Naruto--and give her the limelight that Sasuke and Narutoâs locus took from her extremely early on. Two of the best (and likely, the most popular) AUâs Iâve seen are the Slug Sage and Mokuton AUâs, oftentimes blended together. As for background, sometimes people popularly make her a secret Senju, or a distantly related Uzumaki. Or, sheâs given other things altogether.
Frankly speaking, whatever twist sheâs given, itâs awesome to see. I love seeing what people come up with, no matter the ship or not, time period--you name it.
Thing is, these AUâs cause a lot of mixed opinions. The stans often say she deserved better, that she was too underdeveloped. Antiâs say that people who do are self-inserting and want to make her into a Mary Sue.Â
Hereâs my controversial opinion: have you considered the possibility that thereâs actually a canon precedent to it? Yes, I have the balls to say this.
Read on and Iâll show you what I mean.
Inheriting the strength of a Sannin, as part of the Neo-Sannin
One motif that many people can agree with is the fact that, very early on, the notion of Team 7 being the next Sannin after the originals were foreshadowed for years. That they were would not only inherit their abilities, but surpass them.
Volume 66, cover
By the war itself, we see this realized when Hiruzen--the Sanninâs original team captain and teacher--affirmed that Team 7 had indeed fulfilled this expectation and became the next generation of Sannin, sometimes known as the Neo-Sannin by the fandom.
Something constantly affirmed by canon in regards to Sakura specifically (as emphasized in this wonderful meta by @midgetmeredithâ) is the fact that she did indeed come to surpass Tsunade in both strength and medical ability, something constantly reinforced by those who both admire, knew, and were even contested against Konohaâs Slug Princess and also by Tsunade herself.Â
Chapter 246, as said by Kakashi.
Chapter 279, by Chiyo, Tsunadeâs rival during the Second Shinobi World War; Tsunade was the only person who could foil Chiyoâs poisoning prowess.
Chapter 632, emphasizing Sakura surpassing and inheriting Tsunadeâs power.
Chapter 634, by Shizune, Tsunadeâs apprentice who personally learned from Tsunade just as Sakura had.
My point being, canon absolutely solidifies the fact of Sakura surpassing and inheriting Tsunadeâs power, although this a dead horse that has been beaten and reaffirmed and not the point of this meta.
What does it mean to be a Sannin?
(Below scan originally from Narutoversity.)
As stated in the Second Databook, to be a Sannin means that each individual Sannin are of equal ability and might to each other.
âExplosive spirit and unique power!
Jirayaâs manly fighting valor, Orochimaruâs individual talents, Tsunadeâs monster power and supreme knowledge of medical jutsus. During fights, their skills would increase thrice fold and create stories of great battlefield deeds. Especially, places of battle where the three fought together were their own stage. Stories of their battlefield deeds have evolved into legends. As there will no longer be days when the three will fight alongside each other, the flower of their legend is the more dazzling.
Jiraiya: Serious but deadly eyes! Are the only ones who can fight against the Sannin the Sannin themselves?
Tsunade: Her power is like that of a god of war.
Orochimaru: Like a reflection of his way of life, his fighting skills are cruel to the extreme.â
- Second Databook, translation from Narutoversity.
As stated here, to be a Sannin means to be equal in power, that no individual Sannin is more powerful than each other. More than that, only a Sannin can hope to take down a Sannin.
As stated by Ebisu shortly after Jiraiyaâs return in the aftermath of the Konoha Crush.
As said by Jiraiya during the Three-Way Deadlock in part 1.
âA lonely blossom that flowered in Konoha! Tsunade is the strongest Kunoichi in Konoha history, every bit a match for Jiraiya and Orochimaru. Her whereabouts â indeed, her survival â are currently a mystery, but her name blossoms in the noble inclusion of the shinobi.âÂ
- The Naruto Secret: Scroll of Soldiers Official Fanbook by Masashi Kishimoto (Original scan & translation is from amitDS.)
When the Neo-Sannin stopped being equal
Volume 70, cover
Chapter 670
In the interlude between their deaths and revival, Naruto and Sasuke learn that theyâre something known as âtransmigrantsâ from Hagoromo, specifically of his sons...
Chapter 670
...Asura and Indra Otsutsuki.
Chapter 671
And as we continue to learn, not only are they the reincarnations of Asura and Indra, but they inherited their immense chakra as well.
Now, letâs recap what makes Naruto and Sasuke so special in the first place, up to this point:
Naruto: The son of Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki, sealed with the Kyuubi, not only did he inherit unique and potent chakra from his mother--whoâd been originally brought to Konoha because of it and her life force--but was also the jinchuuriki before him of Kurama, the most powerful bijuu, the Kyuubi. Minato was known as the âYellow Flashâ as the previous Hokage was the prodigiously known for his terrifying ability on the battlefield. Also Jiraiyaâs student who surpassed him. Naruto is also Asuraâs reincarnation, and as we see above, inherited his massive chakra and life force. And, he possesses the Six Paths Yang Power, as well as 3 different sage modes (Toad, Tailed Beast, and Six Paths).
Sasuke: The son of Fugaku and Mikoto Uchiha, the then clan head of the Uchiha, Sasuke is often likened to Madara himself, and confirmed as such by Tobirama and Kurama, the latter stating that Sasukeâs chakra feels identical to Madara. Inheritor of Orochimaruâs power and Indraâs chakra, possessor of the Sharingan, Eternal Mengekyou Sharingan, Rinnegan and all the powers associated with it. He also was the recipient of the Six Paths Yin Pwer.
Really, this list could go on with how many powers Naruto and Sasuke gain outside of what they inherit from the Sannin. Sakura? Yeah, not so much.
Essentially, we go from this...
Chapter 631
...to this.
Ch. 670
To clarify, Sasuke and Naruto being the focus of the story isnât a bad thing. Their bond is integral to the story; however, we were promised the Neo-Sannin. Who, as I stated before, were supposed to be equal in strength and might like their predecessors whose motif was integral to the story long before the struggle between reincarnated brothers was even an unwritten idea in Kishimotoâs mind.Â
Basically? If youâre going to promise us this...
...donât reduce it to this and keep it that way.Â
Give us the Neo-Sannin we were promised that could stand on equal ground together, no matter how much time had passed or how far apart fate and other circumstances drove them apart.
Closing Thoughts
Basically, the entire point Iâm trying to prove here is that we were promised the Neo-Sannin, but were denied it in the same, final arc. While Sasuke and Naruto got godly power ups, and continue to get (anyone catch Narutoâs new Baryon Mode in the Boruto manga thatâs even more powerful than what heâs gotten from Hagoromo?), Sakura stays much the same. And while sheâs comfortably at the top of her game by Boruto, as the worldâs strongest med-nin and Tsunadeâs successor, sheâs greatly outclassed by Sasuke and Naruto. Anti and stan alike agree with this, so yeah.
This why Sakura deserves AUâs where she becomes as powerful as Naruto and Sasuke. Slug Sage, Mokuton, secret Senju--you name it.Â
Canon promised us the Neo-Sannin, which we didnât get. So, why canât we have it in fanon at the very least?
#sakura haruno#haruno sakura#pro sakura#pro sakura haruno#pro haruno sakura#my meta#antis don't bother debating because i'll just block you louts on sight lmao

So without further ado, Chapter 21 --- Volume 1 ending!
P.S Next post would be on Tuesday 10th of November.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As early as the morning sun, Owly was trying his best to wake Naell up as it was time for them to eat and explore the vast capital of Autumn, but the owl failed to tempt the unwavering laziness of the noble Baron's son.
Seeing the immovable Naell, Lieutenant Estra decided to accompany the almost tearful owl that happily accepted the concession.
Butler Lebrut knew it was his duty to wake the young master up, but for some reason, he chose not to as he thought,
'It is true that the young master is in need of training for the upcoming examination." But he also remembered how haggard Naell was upon returning to the inn. Even so, the young master was smiling with satisfaction as he told them of his passing in the guild.
'I guess a little day off wouldn't hurt the young master.' Said the smiling butler as he performed his duties as best as he could.
It was already afternoon when Naell decided to move from the bed. He felt energized and quickly prepared himself for the remaining hours of the day.
Naell was greeted by his butler who was already on the first floor of the inn making friends with the locals.
"Thank you for this wonderful meal Sire." Naell said while enjoying the food. He was served a large portion which consisted of butter roasted chicken and newly baked bread, complemented with a warm and creamy bowl of soup.
But what Naell liked the most was the incredible cup of fresh mint tea. The flavor was soothing his body, and together with the delightful aroma it gave, he felt that the whole lunch was perfect.
The inn owner was touched hearing one of the many praises the young master had given them in his stay at the inn.
"No, thank you for accepting our humble meal young master."
The inn was not shabby but compared to the vacation home of most nobles, it was lacking. At first, when the young master of Beryldot entered the inn, the owner and his employees were quite anxious. It was rare for them to house nobles, yet they were well-acquainted with nobles that were needy and arrogant in their stay.
It so happens they also knew of Naell's past as one of their employees came from Beryldot. In an instant, all of their expectations were changed as the young master was actually kind.
After the meal, Naell went with all of them to train. Owly was of course already with him. The owl was at first, throwing a mild temper tantrum for his laziness a while ago, but was easily diffused by several sweet and frosted pleas of forgiveness.
"Are you sure it is safe, young master?" Said Lieutenant Estra, who was asked to be Naell's sparring partner.
They were currently outside and decided to train away from Taglagas. The lieutenant was currently emitting his aura from his sword as he faced the young master.
Butler Lebrut and the rest of the envoy were present and on a picnic nearby. They were enjoying the calmingly windy place that added a feel of elegance to the food and drinks they brought.
Naell's white mana was producing faint magic that was ready to be launched. He then said to the worrying lieutenant,
"Yes, but please use less than half of your aura."
Upon nodding, Estra with the upward swing of his sword launched a clear aura that headed for the young mage.
All martial artists that haven't reached their limit have a clear aura. It was far from the silver, red, and black auras the awakened martial artists could produce, still, his aura and demeanor were strong and befitting a lieutenant.
Estra was worried as Naell wasn't coating himself with a mana shield, but his concern immediately changed into amazement. All of them saw the crystalized snow symbol that clashed with the aura slash. Upon impact, both vanished and repelled some wind from the force strong enough to add to the pleasing breeze.
Estra was familiar with that magic as he remembered how the young master saved his sister, Sestra with it. For him, it was still surprising seeing the complex magic, and more so for the others who saw it for the first time. Even Owly's interest was piqued, but only for a second as he continued gobbling the food.
"Hmmm, not enough..."
Estra didn't quite hear Naell's mumbling. They then continued training like that until they noticed that the snow crystal blocking the aura filled slash was getting stronger.
"Is the young master using more mana?" Questioned the soldier who was seated with the others. It was Owly who answered him.
"No, neither of their strength has changed since the beginning, but LOOK he's casting more spells HOOT."
The slash that Estra was doing was actually getting sharper as his instincts were getting into it. Yet he was now unable to bring down the snow crystal magic Naell had created. The lieutenant and the rest were amazed at the exchange until it was over.
Estra and Naell went over to sit with them as they ate what was left of Owly's devastating appetite. The lieutenant could not wait, so he asked,
"Young master how did you do it?" As a lieutenant, he was experienced and powerful enough to know that the young master was using the same amount of strength as he did.
Naell then replied looking troubled as he could not find the right words to explain it.
"Well, what I used was actually... different from the first one."
Naell then summoned two magical snow crystals to his left and right. He then added on,
"The right one was from the first spell I used. The second one, if you look closely, is actually three forms of the same magic stacked together."
When they looked closely, the right one was simply thick crystallized snow, while the magic to his left consisted of three of the same figure. Naell then further explained,
"I divided my magic by percentage. 10% at the front, 5% in the middle, and 15% as the last defense. When your aura clashed into my first magic which was 10%, your slash destroyed my magic but in the process, your aura got weaker. Factors such as the resistance it got, the distance of your slash, and the environment's mana and aura, contributed to your aura losing out to my magic. So... what are your thoughts about it?"
"..."
"Uh...The snow in the back is thick, the middle is the thinnest, and the front is not as thin? And your magic got weaker as it passed through... each layer?"
In theory, all of them knew it was smartly done, but the practicality of his 2nd magic was not efficient. Still, they were surprised as the young master was so knowledgeable about theories and practice, neither of which were things any of them truly knew of.
Battling in their real-world would never result in canceling each other's aura or magic. It was often a fast-paced battle with your life on the line. One good example would be during the chaotic troll subjugation; Naell had used almost all his mana to stop the chaotic ax from severing Sestra. Canceling both magic was only possible if both parties knew the amount they would be using.
As the one with the most experience, Estra was the one who spoke as to remind the young master of their companions' seemingly same thoughts.
"Pardon me for saying this, it was a good idea young master but in real combat, it would be useless..."
Naell nodded as he agreed with their thoughts, but deep inside, he knew, there were things he could still attempt before saying it was an utter failure.
Traveling back to Taglagas was as smooth as the night's ambiance was soothing. The carriage's sounds were like music, serenading the buzzing of the evening's sound of nature.
They were greeted by the inn owner who was genuinely happy to see them. The dinner that was served to them consisted of steamed fish served with condiments, rice topped with eggs, onions, and other vegetables, and lastly, hot chocolate that effectively warmed their evening.
The inn was filled with the lively chatter of customers full of vigor. The music was synchronized even with the different instruments being played. People were dancing and singing to the tunes.
"The trees that bore the golden fruits were not special trees.
Moreso, the time they'd lose their fruits, normal the trees would be."
"Such marvel..."
Naell could not help but admire the people of Taglagas, whilst recalling his family in Beryldot; His composed father, his warm mother, his caring teacher, his witty sister, and all those he had met from that world. Little by little, his anxious heart was beginning to unravel in the unknown world of Arts and Magic.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Owly's enormous stomach could be seen through his feathers as he laid back in the chair. Just by using his magic, he knew of what had transpired in the field. By then, even he questioned Naell's ingenuity when it came to all sorts of things.
They had only been together for a short time, yet Naell often managed to surprise the young owl.
There was a time not too long ago, that was when they were traveling to the capital. Their plan to stay at a village every night was canceled due to Naell. They were delayed as the young master was nauseous throughout the journey and needed constant breaks in the process.
Owly wasn't fond of camping out as he was looking forward to a fluffy bed at some comfy inn. Even so, it turned out well in the end, as Naell made a dome-shaped house out of compact bricks of snow that was to their surprise, rather cozy inside. They were saved from the cold wind of the night that often haunted the Western Continent, as the insides of the makeshift house were warm.
Naell, of course, made a structure that was modeled after an igloo. The dome-shaped with compressed snow insulated the coldness outside making their trip comfortable even though they slept on the road.
For them, it was very innovative. Even Athena, one of the twelve guardians named Wisdom, was impressed with Naell. Little did they know, for the young mage, that type of knowledge was common as a previous resident of earth and a smart one at that.
As Owly recalled the past, the three had already arrived back in the office. He could barely move as his belly was towering his usually fluffy feathers, but still, he managed to ask,
"Back so soon? HOOT."
Naell patted Owly's head and placed him on his lap upon being seated. The now fatter owl laid comfortably without care, and Naell felt the weight of the young owl who seemed as heavy as a fat adult cat.
Odino was still too distracted to say anything, but they felt relief when he sat down. Naell and Tahina's thoughts intertwined.
'At least his brain is still working...'
Tahina's and Naell's eyes coincidentally locked onto each other. Sensing their thoughts were similar, Tahina was the one who broke the ice.
"Ahem... Young master."
"Yes, Lady Tahina?"
"I'm sorry for the sudden change of venue."
Naell felt guilty as he was the reason for the change.
"Do not be, it is a pleasing arrangement."
Tahina was grateful and was already serving another set of tea and assorted cakes that Owly's eyes preyed upon.
"HOOT..."
"Thank you, Young master. Please have some."
"Thank you." Naell could only bitterly thank Tahina as Owly was already chewing some cake.
Tahina could not stop herself anymore. She tried her best to sound normal but her pitch was slightly off as her next words were naturally stemming from the curiosity of a mage.
"Young master... how did you manage to use the teleportation magic from the guild?"
"HAHAHA-!"
They both flinched hearing the loud laughter of Odino who just a second ago, wouldn't budge.
"I'm sorry Guildmaster..." Naell quickly bowed his head as to apologize for what he did. He was scared that Odino's laughter was the last thing he would be hearing in that world.
Odino waved his hand while chuckling still. His voice was louder than usual while his gaze was sharper as well.
"No need to worry about that, Naell. I was just surprised, but..."
Naell and Tahina sensed that the room's atmosphere became somewhat heavier.
Tahina until now was still not used to Odino's intimidating aura. Sweat started to drip on her head, but she could still get by. On the other hand, Naell, for he wouldn't be charged with attempted murder, felt braver and calmly replied,
"Hmmm, but?" Naell's face for the first time seemed at peace. Ever since he got there, he was always emitting a fearful vibe which was always misunderstood as cold.
"But the question still remains, how?" Odino was referring to Tahina's question on how Naell managed to do it. He then added on,
"I trust you--- honestly, as someone who kind of trained that cold dad of yours and your oddball of an uncle."
Odino then added on, as he straightened his posture while massaging the lump on his head. It was naturally sore to the touch, preventing him from keeping a painless, straight face.
Tahina and Naell could barely smile, especially he who was guilty of that bump.
"Teleportation magic in a guildhouse can only be done by us who know of the code... What you did could actually be a disaster for us who value security, Naell."
Naell knew all too well that he made a blunder, but it was not easy to explain. That was why he decided that before he could continue, he needed to verify a few things first.
"I am glad you trust me, Guildmaster. I could explain it, but first, I would like to ask a question."
Odino nodded while Tahina was the one who answered him.
"Go ahead, Young master."
"What's the code that I have used anyway?"
"..."
Odino and Tahina were both shocked. They really thought He knew of the codes. They both hesitated to say anything. Naell then decided to continue since it was getting nowhere.
"Well... First, when I used my detection magic, I was certain that this place was full of spatial devices built inside the floors and walls."
Even in the novel, it wasn't explicitly explained how teleportation was made by Escuel Co. Yet when Naell felt the complex magic, he knew that those codes were actually just the basic usage of binary logic.
Tahina was still feeling complicated just like Odino. As a result, they both just nodded to Naell, neither confirming nor denying what he was saying.
"Second, those spatial devices are built correspondingly to a main spatial device that will be used for the teleportation."
Upon saying that, Odino was the one who answered Naell.
"Are you saying you could read the sequence of those codes?"
"I guess?"
.
.
.
It was already nighttime when the four of them decided to end the discussion. After receiving his guild card, Naell immediately took off together with Owly.
Odino and Tahina remembered how Naell was murmuring that C-rank would have been enough after Odino had said,
"I tested your skills so you could get a B-rank guild card."
They could only laugh knowing that lad who could be said was a genius, did not want to be famous at all. Yet what Naell was truly muttering at that time was different,
"I would not have gone through such lengths if you had told me... C-rank would have been enough."
Moments after Naell took his leave, Tahina and Odino spoke in private.
"Naell's explanation was logical, yet it was still incomprehensible for me... It makes me question if he's one of the developers in Escuel Co."
"HAHAHA-! I know exactly what you mean Tahina. Even I could not understand."
Odino as the guildmaster and Tahina as one of the main receptionists of the western guild, were often present when one of the Escuel Co. employees explained the logic behind the codes. Even if they didn't understand most of it, they knew Naell's explanation was the same.
They recalled some bits of how Naell nonchalantly explained the logic behind the hammer's teleportation.
"Let say; my location was point X and above yours was point Y up to a distance of a meter. In order to teleport, I need to connect them so I can transfer the hammer which is currently on X, plus the source which is my mana to Y, via the code."
"If I determine the X and Y conditions to activate them, then I could use teleportation because that is the code."
Even the employees of the said company had stuck to the code since those conditions were done by the developer. Tahina and Odino clearly remembered asking Naell how he determined those conditions.
"By using detection magic."
"..."
They sat in silence, still dumbfounded as they remembered Naell's reply.
Chapter 19
"Could we refrain from using nicknames... Honestly..."
Seeing a towering man like Odino looking small from chagrin only made Naell feel awkward.
⢠That lady over there is liking it, HOOT. â˘
⢠Right? â˘
Owly and Naell couldn't agree more from noticing the snickering Tahina.
As to change the topic, Odino shifted his bulky body of muscles and gazed upon Naell. His scruffy-looking face had small scars that could be associated with his berserker like aura.
"Ahem--- Naell, how's your father?"
"My father is fine. He wanted me to relay his genuine apology for not keeping in touch with you, Guildmaster."
"HAHAHA-! As if! That brat is still the cold one as usual."
"..."
"Still, I more or less expected Sebastian's, but I didn't expect you to get even that couple's recommendation."
"Uncle and Auntie are both decent people." Naell said with a gentle smile.
Odino, of course, heard the rumor of Naell's duel with Andrew and the beating that followed, so jestingly he said,
"Even with what had happened in the PAST?"
Odino's huge grin was a terrifying sight, yet the message behind his words was what Naell was truly fearful of.
Naell's swift reply was just as awkward, even if it was wise.
"PAST experiences are things that one should learn and move on from, HA...hA...ha..."
Odino's sharp gaze and words were sufficient enough to intimidate the young mage.
"Then--- you won't mind meeting THEM?"
Naell was smiling calmly even if his heart was wavering in fear.
"Hence my PASS Guildmaster..."
"HAHAHA-!"
Tahina could only sigh seeing the interaction of the two. As for Owly, the cakes that were served before them were a great distraction at the moment.
"Young master, why do you wish to join the guild?" Tahina was the one who spoke as to divert the conversation.
Of course, it was not common for nobles to apply as adventurers, but it wasn't rare either. Rinca Arigare, the daughter of Duke Mard, even joined the guild with Andrew a few months ago, the reason being the camaraderie between them.
"I long for adventure and companionship?"
Naell's dubious reply made the two of them smile awkwardly. Tahina thought as handsome as the young mage might be, socializing was not one of his priorities. She then asked again,
"Then why apply here at Taglagas? Arigare estate was closer."
They saw Naell's smile crack for a second before returning with the usual cold look. His exaggerated actions with his hands to his heart, were truly a spectacle as he said,
"The same as everyone--- It was my dream to apply in the capital."
"..."
Odino yet again laughed heartily as he thought of something mischievous. He then spoke to stop the shenanigans that would've continued without restraints.
"Ahem. Well Naell, I don't mind passing you here now but..."
"But?" Naell's confused looks were answered with Odino's eyes as he shifted his gaze towards Tahina who understood it quickly.
"As you will, Guildmaster."
With a snap of Tahina's fingers, bright mana engulfed the room. Immediately, the four of them were teleported onto the field of the Adventurer's guild. Owly was left behind and was thankful as the cakes were oh so delicious to ignore.
As to continue, Odino with his grin remaining still, untangled his hammer necklace from his neck. Soon, the hammer grew a meter as the head of the hammer was beaming with silver-like stones that radiated with his black oozing aura.
"But you have to pass my exam! HAHAHA-!"
.
.
.
The field they were transferred onto was a spacious field at the center of the first floor of the Adventurer's guild. The people that were there and some bystanders had already gathered upon seeing the guildmaster.
As the guildmaster of all guilds in the continent, he was rarely seen staying in one place for long. The vice guildmasters were often the ones managing the guild but coincidentally, Odino happened to be in the same place when Andrew and Naell visited Taglagas.
"It is very simple Naell, you just need to stop my hammer from hitting that dummy."
Odino was pointing towards a wooden looking doll that was usually used to examine one's magic or aura.
Naell was glad that the hammer wouldn't be thrown at him. Still, he needed precaution.
"Guildmaster, I do not have the strength to block your hammer."
Upon hearing those words, Odino snickered at him. He misunderstood the cautious face of Naell as mockery. The guildmaster would never dare use more strength, even if he wanted to, as that could destroy the guild itself.
"No worries, I will just use a small amount of my aura."
Upon hearing those words, Naell was now beaming with complacency. He knew he could block it if Odino would use just a little bit of power. He nodded and with a [ poof ] summoned his staff confidently. A surge of mana then scattered around the field.
The onlookers were in awe upon seeing the clear wave of mana emitting from the smiling young mage.
"Please go easy on me..."
Naell then positioned himself in between the dummy and the hammer-wielding guildmaster.
Odino was grinning so hard. His chaotic aura was trying to come out as to respond to his urges. He thought the cheeky young mage infront of him was trying to make the so-called JACKhammer retaliate with his full power.
"HAHAHA-! Here I go---!"
With a huge circular swing, Odino's left arm was pumped with muscular veins as he threw the obnoxiously huge hammer towards the wooden dummy.
The onlookers felt the bravery of the young mage who would be going toe to toe with the guildmaster's might. Even Tahina thought Naell was more handsome and cool at that moment.
Little did she know, it was Naell's intention.
His plan was to simply hit the hammer with his staff to look cool. He would then use his ice magic upon impact and freeze the hammer to look way cooler. He knew completely that it was a foolish thing to do, but as childish as it might seem, he was still a man who would grab the opportunity to look awesome once in a while.
The collision between the chaotic hammer and the mana filled staff generated a brilliant, light explosion of black and white.
Then again, a cool Naell was still a fearful Naell. His nerves took over as the collision got longer, so instead of freezing it, he unconsciously made a blunder.
Naell instead of using his ice magic used the spatial teleportation within the guild. The heated collision of his staff and Odino's hammer ended with a [ POOF ] as the hammer suddenly teleported above the guildmaster.
"..."
The speed should not have been too much for the likes of Odino, but with his dumbfounded face, his hammer traveled straight down his head.
*thump*
.
.
.
All the guild members, most of all, the employees, knew that the teleportation magic that was constructed in the guild was impossible to perform if you weren't an employee. Even then, not all employees could do it since it was complex magic.
Odino, with all of his experience, did not foresee Naell's actions. Moreso, anyone including Tahina wouldn't either.
Naell knew having a huge hammer fall on one's head would surely be painful, even if that someone was a renowned martial artist. Soon enough, a bump on Odino's head was slightly forming.
The onlookers that were baffled were already getting a grip on reality as murmurs began to spread.
Yet like them, Naell was also shocked. He was confident that the old man would have been able to grab it before it could land onto him.
Seeing each of their puzzled looks, Tahina was the first one to speak. There was no doubt she was curious, but her professionalism took hold of her.
"...If it is okay, let's move to another venue."
Naell nodded, his face blatantly showing concern for the old man.
"Guildmaster, let us go..."
Tahina's words woke Odino who was still a tad late with his reply.
"Ah... right."
Upon grabbing his hammer, the three with Tahina's magic teleported away from the field.
Chapter 17
It had been days since they arrived at TAGLAGAS; the Kingdom of Autumn's capital city. The journey was so exhausting that Naell had done nothing but rest, definitely not because he was just too lazy to move at all.
On the other hand, Owly those past days was sulking, as his mom, Athena had already left the capital.
Naell's entrance exam was still days ahead, and due to that, the soldiers would have to stay with their young master until he is accepted as a student.
Mr. Lebrut and the soldiers arranged the necessities at the inn they were currently occupying, since the dorms at the school were only for the students.
Going back that day, Naell had decided to do his agendas with Owly accompanying him, as Lieutenant Estra did not allow their young master to travel alone. Besides, It was also Naell's attempt to cheer up the little owl.
Both of them were currently looking around Taglagas. They noticed how it was full of grandiose buildings, the lively chatter of different races, and a very spacious town that one would not see at the otherwise modest and small estate of Beryldot.
Taglagas was divided into three parts; first, the outer circle near the gates of the capital where commoners were usually living; second, the inner circle wherein the businesses and rich commoners reside; and lastly, the centermost circle where the castle was located and was vastly occupied by mansions of nobles.
As Naell was looking at his map, Owly's HOOT distracted him from daydreaming any further.
â˘Where are we going? HOOT.â˘
â˘I need to deliver this letter first.â˘
â˘Food? HOOT.â˘
â˘We've... just eaten, Owly.â˘
Owly with a pouty look declared his dismay. His white fluffy feathers became even puffier than before.
â˘HOOT, You know nothing of a beast's stomach!â˘
Naell as to tease the young owl decided to hit his sore spot.
â˘I know that if you eat a lot, you will POOP in places with hordes of monsters. THAT IS NOT ALLOWED.â˘
â˘...â˘
Naell felt guilty seeing a dejected Owly on his left shoulder. He knew that incident truly left the young owl crumbling from shame.
â˘Hahaha, Yes--- after this, we'll eat.â˘
â˘HOOT!â˘
â˘But we will go to the Adventurer's guild after our snack.â˘
â˘Sounds good to meee, HOOT.â˘
Naell and Owly were having a telepathic conversation. Awakened beasts are companions that are sought by all. It would only give rise to troubles if many knew of Owly, that is why they decided to converse through magic.
With the help of their map, both were able to find their first agenda that day: Delivering the letter to the mansion of Star: one of the distinguished houses within the capital.
The Marquis' household was a well-known family of mages. Producing numbers of A-rank mages and two S-rank mages namely, [Lightningale "Anti-Witch"] Sarah Star, and the now-retired, former Marquis--- [Celestial Wizard] Roetem Star.
Naell could not help but feel stiff as he was hoping to not meet anyone from Alicia's side of the family.
Even so, he was still astounded by the mansion's walls, as it was built with marble that seemed quite luxurious. Furthermore, the walls were covered with other ornaments that could surely capture the eyes of anyone. Naell then felt the magic of the two knights guarding the gate.
The guards became more attentive upon noticing the approaching Naell. He was dressed plainly with a white polo and black pants, whilst showing the dignified look of a noble. Yet what truly caught their attention were his bright red eyes that they were quite familiar with, as it never failed to send shivers upon anyone's spine.
"Greetings Sires." Naell's voice was warm, unlike his curious gaze that was yet again misunderstood as cold.
As he bowed down, the knights were able to regain their composure. They were well used to seeing the nobles' way of greeting, and so the two knights managed to bow down in response.
Naell and Owly were impressed as the two's actions were synchronized. It took both of them a lot of will power to hold back their applause.
After a couple of seconds, another knight that seemed to be of a higher rank, approached Naell with a bow as he said,
"Kindly state your name and the purpose of your visit."
'I guess magic knights really are frightening in their own way.' Naell thought, as he was mystified at how that high ranking knight seemed as formidable as his sensei, Sebastian. He then calmly handed the letter to the knight.
"I was instructed by my father to give this letter."
To: Marquis Metero W. Star
From: Fharom Beryldot
Seeing the name of the sender and the snow crystal emblem it had, the knight had an idea of who he was.
"Greetings, Young master Naell."
Said the high-ranking knights that had a complicated look which Naell did not overlook.
"Something the matter, Sire?"
"Your appearance... is different from what we know." The knight was referring to how Naell of the past had black-like demon hair and villainous brown eyes. Not to mention, he also knew the Baron of Beryldot had only one son.
"A lot has happened since then, and I'm sure you might have heard some of IT." Naell's words and chilling eyes, once again intimidated the guarding knights. Yet, as expected of a high-ranking knight, he managed to calmly speak as he bowed down.
"Forgive me for imploring Young master."
"I do not mind."
The knights misunderstood his looks as intimidation even though Naell was actually warmly applauding their knighthood which exudes elegance. He always had a soft spot for people like them.
"We greet the Young master!"
Naell and Owly were once again impressed at how they quickly changed their disposition. He thought they were now giving him a warm welcome, but the truth was different as they were actually like anxious employees in front of a nightmarish boss.
'But I'm sure they know of my trashy attitude.' Naell thought as he misunderstood their fearful greeting as mockery.
It could be said that the high-ranking knight was used to intimidating aura that was fiercer than Naell's. Still, he said warmly, despite knowing his dreadful reputation, as he knew the young master was the nephew of Marquis Metero, and the son of Baron Fharom.
"Young master, unfortunately, Master Metero and his family are away. They were invited by the Royal family."
The high-ranking knight was pleased seeing Naell stiffen after hearing the name "Metero". He then thought,
'I guess even a trashy son would cower in fear by the mighty household of Star.'
Yet Naell was actually releasing the tension he had, knowing that there was a zero percent chance he would meet them. Still, being thoughtful to the misunderstood young master, the knight said,
"Upon his return, the young master will be given the honor to meet the Marquis. I'll escort you inside and---"
But before the knight could even finish his sentence, Naell waved his hand as he softly said,
"Ohhh, that is fine Sire. I was just going to drop this letter and be on my way. Thank you."
The high ranking knight questioned the rumors as the young master was respectful throughout the conversation. Naell then, before they could even reply went on his way.
"..."
The high ranking knight together with the guarding knights became more bewildered. Just breathing the same air with the Star family was a privilege that lower-ranking nobles always sought. Yet Naell nonchalantly denied the honor.
"Captain Aestero, should we... stop him?"
"There's... no need."
As someone who wanted to live his school life as quietly as possible, Naell rejected meeting Alicia's side. The Star household in the novel was quite a handful to get acquainted with.
Chapter 16
A week had gone by in the blink of an eye, and Naell had spent most of his time either in the library, or accompanying Lily and the young owl to play. All his preparations were done by his attendants as his little sister would not leave his sight.
The morning was mellow as they stood at the gates of the Beryldot household. They were now patiently waiting for the two Owls, as they went ahead to prepare their nest inside the carriage.
Naell's thoughts by then were filled with fond memories, all from the months he had spent with his family.
"Brother, don't go..." insisted Lily who was crying and grabbing his arm. It really was an emotional parting, as it was time for him to study in the capital.
"You know I have to, dear sister."
"Then, let me come with you."
Naell then kneeled down to comfort his sniffling sister. He then calmly said,
"Dear sister, if you go with me, who will take care of our parents, and even our household?"
*sniff*
Naell then added on, now slightly grinning as he knew he was winning their battle.
"Can you do that?"
"Hmmmph! Sometimes you are being unfair Brother."
"Hahaha"
Wiping the tears from her cheeks, Lily called out to him once more, holding up a hand as she lifted her pinky.
"Send me many letters brother..."
"It's a promise." Naell replied, holding his end of the bargain with a pinky swear.
Seeing the warm and loving interaction of Naell and the pouting Lily, was a cute sight to behold. Fharom, Lilia, and Sebastian, could only hide their feelings of gloom beneath their cozy smiles.
"Naell, take care of yourself out there."
"Thank you, Mom."
"Son, you can always write to us if you are in need of money. It would bring shame to our family if you somehow went hungry. We are nobles afterall."
"Do not worry, Father. Besides, I have your recommendation letter with me."
"HAHAHA ! With Andrea and my signature alone, you won't even be needing Fha--- Baron's signa---" But before Drew could even finish, an annoyed Fharom immediately cut him off.
"Why are you even here, Drew?"
"To see Naell off, why?"
Fharom could only sigh. Seeing the lovey-dovey couple who were both busy, but still went to see Naell off, was heartwarming. Yet, because he was quite a tsundere, he wouldn't show it off.
"Still--- Sensei, Father, Uncle and Auntie, thank you for the signatures." Naell as he stood up, bowed down to them. He was really glad to have those signatures as it would help him skip some procedures in the Adventurer's guild.
Naell's plan was to work and independently earn some money, as he did not want to burden his family. Nonetheless, his father would still send his monthly allowance.
"Nell, just give them that letter okay? If that old fart is there or anyone messes with you, I'll go to the capital myself!"
"..."
Naell could only wryly smile at Andrea's words. He remembered how Andrew and his group in the novel became celebrities, all after having brought the signatures of his two well-known parents to the Adventurer's Guild.
"Yeah! Me and my wife will---"
*cough*
"---HAHAHA ! I mean take care, Naell."
"Hahaha yeahhh, take care, Nell."
Fharom smiled with approval. He was glad with how Sebastian could silence the lovey-dovey couple.
Sebastian then turned towards his student as he said warmly,
"Naell, as your teacher, I'm very proud of you. Please accept my gift to help you in your travels."
Sebastian with a [ poof ] gave Naell a weapon: a staff carved out of dark elven wood. It had a simple yet elegant design with the intricate markings of elven language. Naell held the weapon in his hand in awe as he spoke.
''This... Thank you, Sensei."
There are three primary weapons that mages use; a Wand for amplifying one's mana, a Cane for controlling elemental magic, (which is useful for mages like Sebastian, who has inferior wind magic) and a Staff to lessen the burden of magic from one's body. Of course, there are mages who do use unconventional weapons or none at all.
"And here's ours!" Pridefully handed the blaring Drew.
Almost in an instant Naell felt a hint of relief, as he held onto the unusually bright ornament.
What Drew and Andrea gave was a bracelet of white-gold rings, chained together forming what was better known as 7 days.
"Thank you, Uncle, Auntie."
"Nell, I hope that'll help you, as it can lessen the burden on your body when using high-level magic."
"Ahhh, that's why... I'll treasure it well, Auntie."
Andrea and Drew were pleased upon seeing that Naell liked their gift. Yet their glee was cut short by Fharom's interruption, as he then held out his gift.
"And this is ours, Son."
As Naell opened the small box, he was greeted by the slight glow of a ring.
"Father, Mother, and dear sister... Thank you so much."
Naell was quite happy with all he had received, especially the spatial ring his family had given him.
He recalled what he knew of the Spatial accessories. Based on the novel, they were advanced storage systems that could give a separate space inside the user's chosen accessory.
Naell once more eyed the items he now possessed. He could not help but feel that all of their gifts were chosen out of care. After that, the young master became more determined to live his slacker life with them--- his family, comfortable as well.
As they heard the gallops of horses, they saw the carriage slowly closing approaching them.
While it was not that extravagant, it easily gave the impression of a noble's carriage. Not to mention, both doors of the umber-colored wooden carriage were etched with the snow crystal sigil of the Beryldot household.
As the door opened, two owls emerged from the carriage, immediately flying towards the group. Soon, a young man was hurriedly walking behind them.
"HOOT! Hey, don't cry, Lily! I'll be with your brother, so he is well protected." Said the young owl while puffing his fluffy feathered chest.
After the initial meet up, Athena and his son were welcomed warmly by the Beryldot's household.
At first, Naell was really displeased by the young owl's attitude. Yet little by little, it went from unpleasant, to him feeling he had a feisty cat that with all the attitude, still had to be loved.
Not to mention, Naell understood how powerful and helpful the owls were, as after having a portion of his magic sealed, the heavy burden he once felt was gone.
"Thank you, Owly." Lily hugged the little owl that all of a sudden, went silent. When Fharom introduced the two owls to his family, Lily went ahead and called the young owl as Owly. Little by little, the young miss and the young owl became the best of friends.
"..."
In truth, Owly wasn't pleased with the name, but since he was not strong enough to name himself, he thought it wasn't a bad idea to be named by someone else.
Fharom approached the fluttering Athena as he politely asked,
"Will you be staying in the capital, Lady Athena?"
"Hoot, I probably will not, as I'll be travelling east afterwards."
"Then I hope the carriage is to your liking."
"Hoot, it is. Thank you for your hospitality and for accepting my request, Baron."
Fharom, Athena, and Sebastian were in deep thought as they were gazing at one another. They could not help but recall the conversation they had.
"We believe that the demons are trying to resurface to the world, Hoot."
"That's impossible... but if that's the case then we should unite and elimin---"
"Baron, at the moment, we cannot trust everyone. Rest assured, as one of the 12, I'll make sure to prevent this catastrophe, Hoot."
"May Aurora guide you, Lady Athena."
"May Magi lead your way, Baron."
A small built man with kempt black hair, stood straight and bowed to them. Sebastian then approached the man and spoke,
"Serve them well, Mr. Lebrut."
"I will do my best, Sire."
Butler Lebrut was assigned to accompany Naell and Owly to the capital, and like Sebastian, he wore a standard butler attire matching his brown seemingly hardworking eyes.
"I'll be in your care, Mr. Leb."
"Ah! Same as well, Young master!"
Mr. Lebrut had known Naell for 5 years, yet even though he had changed, the young butler was still afraid of him.
"Shall we go now, Young master?" Lieutenant Estra was the leading knight that was tasked to guide the carriage. Two knights would also go with them to the capital, with one being the coachman.
"Still Naell, why don't you just go to Arigare and apply there for your adventurer's card? I heard rumors that the tests are more difficult in the capital." Asked Lilia who knew it was more practical, as she also knew that the capital was brimming with applicants.
"That's--- There is no need Mom, as it is my dream to apply in the capital. That will not stop me from accomplishing it!" Naell could only fake his excitement, as he couldn't say how much he truly feared the Dukedom of Arigare.
Naell was truly disappointed when he learned that the guild's application could only be processed in the big city. That was why the Beryldot's guild could only give missions and house a few expeditions.
"You wouldn't know Lila~, but it is always a dream of a future adventurer to apply in the capital!" Andrea was the one who explained how absurd it was, yet she couldn't deny how even they were like that in the past.
"Oh! I guess it is like drinking tea from our favorite place, no matter how far it is, we still go there."
"Hehehe, that's right~"
When Lilia and Andrea were together like that, the residents of Beryldot often found themselves soothed from the beauty of the two.
On the other hand, Fharom and Drew's get-togethers, (like at the moment) were often disastrous, as it always was with childish bickering at best.
"By the way, son." Fharom quickly dismissed his nagging friend's words as he handed out a different letter to Naell.
Naell noticed that the letter was formally prepared to be sent out to a Marquis, but what made it surprising was the question of why.
To: Marquis Metero W. Star
Naell knew of the Star family. They were a well-known power in the capital, having produced multiple widely known high ranking adventurers.
Fharom misinterpreted Naell's confused face as an expression of complication.
"I know... Even I am not fond of them. But neither Lilia nor I have any relatives, while you do... And I'm sure Alicia would have wanted to at least have her son be acquainted with her relatives."
"..."
Naell then realized the slacker life he wanted to have, was still so far from his reach.
Chapter 15
*knock*
"Come in..." Said the yawning Naell. He was still feeling tired from the expedition, but unlike on Earth, where he would often panic just to make it in time, here he was given the privilege of nobility.
Upon entering, a young maid calmly and with a hint of nervousness said,
"Young master... Madam Lilia requests your presence for breakfast."
"Thank you for telling me Miss. Please, tell my mother that after I'm done preparing, I'll be on my way." Naell's reply was sluggish but well-mannered. Nonetheless, the young maid could not help but still be slightly frightened.
It was no surprise that upon becoming mellow, Naell once again, became a hot topic all over the Beryldot estate, but this time, it was in a more favorable direction.
Ladies who were often frightened of him, were now curious with his mysterious yet charming appearance. Nevertheless, it would still take time before all of them could forget about his past.
Such was also the case for the employees of the Beryldot's household, as they were still afraid of him, yet they could not help but appreciate his now calmer and dreamy demeanor.
'Just like Baroness Alicia.' Employees that were hired long before, would now often compare Naell to his deceased mother; an unexplainable eerie ambiance packed with a cheeky personality.
Going back, Naell's pace was slow as he was sluggish, but even so, he managed to arrive on time.
Upon entering the dining room, Naell saw the two owls comfortably sitting on the table. His father was seated at the center- with Lilia beside him and Sebastian on his left. Lily was beside the young owl who was shamelessly salivating from the food being brought out.
'A glutton..' Naell thought, while he greeted them on with a noble's bow.
The food was noticeably more luxurious than usual; mushroom soup, roast beef, and potatoes were served first, followed by pastries consisting of bagels, croissants, and pretzels with the option of cheese, jam, or chocolate dip, accompanied by beverages, such as tea, coffee, with the option of hot or cold.
The seemingly well acquainted young owl and Lily's eyes widened upon seeing cookies and hot chocolate after their main meal. It was noticeable how both of them were happily chatting during breakfast.
After a while, Baron Fharom decided to head out and do an inspection with Sebastian, all while Lily, together with Naell, Lilia, the young owl, and Athena, decided to take a stroll around town.
The vibrant town of Beryldot was very welcoming in the morning, as the busy sounds of its residents farther added to its cozy nature.
Yet, as welcoming as they were, all were stunned seeing Naell with his family. They often thought the young master disliked his stepmother and sister. Not to mention, upon seeing all of their smiling faces, the villagers felt that the rumors of the young master of Beryldot, losing his mind after the beating, was indeed true.
Originally, the five planned to have tea with Andrea and Drew altogether, but with Lily insisting on taking the young owl to the park, they decided to head their separate ways.
Naell was left as the guardian of the two children and was amazed at how Lily and the young arrogant owl could just get along.
'How did Lily make this fat, chunky bird act normal?'
The park was located at the middle of the southern part of the Beryldot estate. It wasn't that big nor was it luxurious, yet most of the citizens found themselves enjoying the open space filled with flowers, the lively laughter of children, and the newly added area, dedicated for those who wished to open up stalls to sell food and drinks to those in the vicinity.
"Young miss! Come try my food." Shouted the stall owners when they saw Lily.
They all bowed down upon seeing Naell. All they had with the young master of Beryldot was respect, as it wasn't a secret who innovated the idea of all those changes. Lily often felt pride knowing it was her brother.
In that world, small stalls were not known, as restaurants and stores were businesses established by rich merchants or nobles. That was why, when Naell suggested the idea, together with other innovations, the Beryldot estate became more vibrant, as the common masses could now provide for themselves without risking their lives into the unknown.
Most of those stall owners were adventurers who could no longer fight due to the injuries they had sustained, widows or widowers, and even the young citizens who were afraid to wander the world.
Most of them wanted to personally thank Naell, yet weren't able to, as the young master always had an isolated aura that made most too scared to approach him.
Little did they know, Naell just misunderstood their looks as hostility towards his awful social commonsense.
"Who is that friend of yours, Young miss? Asked the older woman who was selling ribbons and other hair accessories.
"HOOT!"
Naell was glad to see how happy his little sister was as she talked with the citizen. More so, when he gifted her a strawberry colored headband that suited her golden hair. Even the fat owl was enjoying himself as he gobbled up the food offered freely by the stall owners.
As they walked, they saw the librarian of Beryldot who greeted them warmly as she said,
"Greetings, Young master. It is rare to see you here."
"Likewise, Lady Klata. Let me introduce you to my sister, Lily Witner Beryldot and this here is Ow---."
"HOOT!"
"Ohhh! What an energetic fellow and greetings, Young miss."
"Good day to you as well, Lady Klata." Replied Lily as she gently smiled, which then was followed by her curtsy bow.
"That explains a lot." Said Klata who looked towards the confused Naell. She then added on jokingly,
"You aren't keen on my advances because you are always surrounded by beautiful ladies and cute fellows."
It might have been because they both loved books, as the bad rumors regarding the young master, did not stop them from being acquainted, more so, from teasing one another.
"That's clearly a misunderstanding as you are after a baseless assumption, instead of my heart." Naell's reply could've been considered flattering, but for Klata, she was well aware that it was nowhere near his intention.
Nevertheless, Klata with a giggle bravely retorted, her skin somewhat glowed from his remark.
"It might not be bad to have both of them, Young master."
Lily was startled, she did not know her brother could talk so comfortably with others, and even more so, flirt. Yet, she did not know that for those two, it was all that they called:
'The fellowship of the books.'
After some more cheeky discussion, they parted ways, as Naell, the young owl, and Lily were then heading over to the place of the lovey-dovey couple.
"See you again Young miss, little fellow, and Mister L." Klata waved her hand as she smiled and walked further away from them.
Naell was really troubled by Klata's misunderstanding and was very angry at the author. He knew in the novel, Arts and Magic, that Mr. L was an easter egg character--- neither created for the plot, nor existed in the story.
Examples of those easter egg scenarios were: the letters that were delivered to a princess which should have been a major plot, became a courtship of nonsensical romance, as the author had forgotten it.
Another was how the hordes of monsters that were sighted near the estate of Beryldot, had been erased in an unknown manner, as the author thought it was unnecessary with Andrew in the capital.
Naell knew all too well that Mr. L was just a scapegoat written by the author to excuse himself from the plot holes he had created, and now it was being used against him, as to why--- all because of his negligence.
He did not know that Klata was a huge fan of mystery and romance. That was why she made Naell her primary suspect when she saw him writing the letter L in a non-italic way.
It was a blunder, as the alphabet of Arts and Magic were all in italic. It wasn't a big deal for some, but only Mr. L who often left a mark, used a non-italic letter just like Naell.
Adding to the fact that she knew the truth of how Naell thwarted the goblin invasion, and how Mr. L was often described as having bright red eyes, and was last seen on the Beryldot estate, the very same place, and appearance of the young master of Beryldot.
"..."
"Brother, are you Mr. L?" Lily could not help but ask her brother who was still in a daze and looked more troubled than before.
Luckily, Naell was brought back to reality by Lily's voice as he then replied,
"That's what happens if you read too much romance, sister. You become dramatic, Hah hah..."
Lily just accepted it as the truth. She did not care much if he was the rumored playboy or the monster hunter. What mattered for her was the happiness of her brother.
All the while, the young owl, whose tummy was very full, was half-asleep and only registered the simple words of where to go, or when to stop.
Upon arriving at their destination, the lovey-dovey couple, Athena and Lilia went on and greeted them.
Naell and Lily got surprised as the almost robotic owl became lively upon seeing the food.
Various flavors of cakes and assorted cookies were prepared on the table. Different leaves for a cup of tea, and deep dark chocolate drinks were served for them to drink.
After saying goodbye to the lovey-dovey couple who was playing with Lily awhile ago, they all decided to go home, and rest for the day until the morrow.
Chapter 14
'If it is not welcome, it wouldn't be here, and besides...' Naell reassured himself with a "fufufu" while covering his mouth with his left hand. It was a sight to behold, but luckily, none were able to see it.
'...It probably just flew over our estate.'
By the time they were finished with their dinner, Fharom, Lilia, and Lily had decided to head towards their rooms. Each of them left after saying their goodnights to each other.
On the other hand, Sebastian told Naell that he wished to have a short discussion with him, in his room.
As Naell entered, he felt his body slowly approaching the solace of his bed. The room's warm lights and the night's cold glow didn't fail to soothe his mind. Yet, his senses didn't wander for long, as he heard a loud HOO---T, followed by the voice of an old lady.
"Hoot, Sebastian, is he the boy?"
Sebastian replied as he closed the door behind him.
"He is, Milady."
Upon hearing the exchange, Naell saw a small figure fluttering its wings as it looked directly toward them; its heart-shaped face covered by her white feathers seemed so mystical underneath her silver gaze.
'An owl?'
"Hello, Little one."
In the face of an elderly figure, Naell placed his right hand on his chest and bowed down to show his etiquette as he gently said,
"Good evening, Madam."
"Hoot, as always, no need for formalities Sebastian, and little one, just call me Auntie." Upon hearing that, Sebastian turned to Naell and gestured for him to take a seat.
The two watched as the owl steadied herself onto the table before them. The night's serene glow peeked through Naell's bedroom window, further adding to the owl's mystical feel.
Sebastian was the one who initiated the conversation. His calm and friendly demeanor did not change as he introduced them to each other.
"Naell, this is Athena, a Legendary beast, and one of the 12 Guardians of old hailed as Wisdom..."
"...Athena, this is Naell, son of Baron Fharom, and the deceased Baroness Alicia--- furthermore, the stepson of Baroness Lilia."
Looking closely, Naell found Athena's appearance to be very majestic and at the same time, fluffy. Her white feathers were occasionally covered by tiny black spots at her chest, while the rest glimmered with it being bright white. Her large forward-facing eyes were dyed with silver-like crystals matching her black hawk-like beak.
Naell recalled the book he read in the library pertaining to the 12 Guardians;
The [12 Guardians of Old] were tasked by the Celestials to protect the world from Lucile [Celestial of Destruction] who commanded the demons to reign havoc and destruction from the very world they created. Hence, their main purpose is to prevent it from happening. Upon inheriting the guardian position, that being must not intervene with politics, war, and other worldly events.
'If only I had finished reading Arts and Magic. I kinda suspected death flags from the other guardians.' Naell wasn't able to finish the book, Arts and Magic. He remembered reading until passing out in Volume 4.
'...If I remember correctly, Volume 5's cover was Andrew at war with the Demons.'
"Once again, good evening Auntie."
"Hoot, Likewise, Little one."
"So what brings yo---" Before Naell could even finish his words, Athena started speaking calmly, but with a somewhat apologetic tone.
"First, I'm sorry for testing you a little while ago, Hoot."
"Hohoho"
"Ah, that was your mana?"
"Yes, and frankly I was surprised. You are talented, just like Alicia."
"Thank you..." Naell once again slightly bowed his head in response.
"And as to why I am here." As Athena said that, she plucked one of her feathers using her beak, and soon, it rose into the air. In an instant, a shining beam of darkness began to emit from the feather, vanishing as quickly as it first appeared.
Then he appeared--- a chubby little owl who pridefully stood with his wing on his feathered chest.
"Mom! This human looks so weak, HOOT." His seemingly cute appearance was erased by his arrogant beak.
.
.
.
Athena sighed as she replied,
"Hoot, Do not say that. You are being rude."
"But he is really weak!"
The foul-mouthed owl was like a miniature version of Athena, only this time, it held no black spots; a pure white coat of feathers and piercing golden eyes were still apparent in his overweight figure.
Without warning, Athena's fluffy feathers made a steel-like sound upon hitting the young owl's head.
Naell's temper rose a bit as the younger owl kept asserting phrases like,
"Look he's anemic!"
"It is good to see you little owl." In an attempt to diffuse the situation, Sebastian warmly greeted the young owl who warmly greeted him back.
"Ah, Good to see you as well, Uncle, HOOT."
The young owl's speech was still rough, but Naell could feel the respect he had for Sebastian. On the other hand,
"Oiii Human, what's your name?"
"...I'm Naell Witner Beryldot, What about yo---"
"HOOT, Naell? Fufufufu."
"HA...Ha..ha" Naell could only laugh dryly at the young owl's seemingly belittling snicker.
Yet, the little owl was still the one who had the audacity to ask arrogantly,
"What is so funny? Is being weak funny, HOOT?"
"..."
As she caught herself losing her composure, Athena quickly stood tall. An expression of annoyance still lingered on her face as she sighed.
"Hoot, We have been sidetracked enough by my son. AnyHoot little one, I was informed of your enrollment to the capital."
"Ah yes, Auntie, I'll be traveling next week."
"If it is possible, I would love for you and my son to stick together for the time being."
"WHAT!?" Both Naell and the young owl could not hide their disapproval.
Naell did not want a foul-mouthed companion, and the young owl would not accept a wimp.
"Hohoho, it will be a good experience for you little owl, and for Naell as well."
"Hoot, especially for you my son, you've been spoiled enough, so I'm sure you will grow in the time being."
"I understand Mom... But a weakling for a companion, HOOT."
"..."
Ignoring her son's remark, Athena turned to Naell and spoke,
"Listen, little one. I know of your struggles with relation to your mana. As of the moment, everything you do in excess will just hurt you."
She slightly glanced at Sebastian then Naell before continuing,
"Or worse, your death."
.
.
.
"Just a low chance of death, Hoot."
Athena continued, as to reassure the now paler looking Naell.
"That is why Sebastian went to meet with me a while ago."
Naell glanced at Sebastian. He wasn't informed when that happened.
"Naell, that was the time when you saved the village from the goblin invasion."
"Heh, so that's where you went, Sensei, Heh heh..." Naell replied with no hint of joy, as the possibility of his death, void the life out of him.
"Hoot, anyway that is one of the reasons why WE are here... WE can prevent that." As Athena said that, one feather of hers flew over to Naell.
"...It has something to do with our magic." She then added on and quickly, Naell felt that somewhat, a heavy burden inside his body had left him.
"Our darkness attribute can seal the excess mana your body cannot handle... But it can only last for a few hours, as your mana will burn our magic from your body, Hoot."
Athena then added on as she pointed her wing at the proud looking owl.
"So if it is alright with you, take my son to the Capital, so he can help you, and at the same time help him grow in the process."
Naell turned his gaze to his possible savior as he said,
"I understand then... Thank you, Auntie, thank you Sensei. Please take care of me, little owl."
"So this weakling needs me huh, HOOT."
Naell snapped seeing the arrogant owl who kept puffing out his chest as he smiled and retorted,
"It is amusing though, seeing you are yet to name yourself."
"WHA? I'm not a named beast yet, but I sure will be soon. How did a weakling like you know of my weakness! HOOT!" The young owl was taken aback by the surprise jab thrown at him.
"You can't even hide your mana that well--- Speaking of mana..." Naell pondered a bit, but soon realized that the young owl's mana was the same as what he had sensed in the Forestlands.
The young owl kept blabbering nonsense that was effectively making him mad at an alarming rate.
"HOOT! "
"Auntie, awhile ago, I actually sensed this DUM--- owl's mana back at the Forestland... Did you fly there?"
"Who.. are you calling dumb!!!?"
"Shushhh for a bit." Athena smacked the little owl's head once more.
The young owl then kept quiet while occasionally muttering words under his breath that instead of looking scary, his cuteness was amplified.
"Ah yes, we did... But there should have been no lingering mana, as we didn't land there."
Naell then pointed his finger towards the young owl, who kept a straight face while whistling. The young owl flinched as he remembered something.
"But I'm certain that was his mana."
Yet the facade was easily seen through by Athena, who pushed the young owl to speak.
"Well Mom, you know... I ate a lot during our travel, so I kinda... took a đŠ."
.
.
.
Sebastian, Naell and even Athena could only facepalm at the young owl, who then kept calling what happened as the "call of nature".
"It's different from the auras and mana that these monsters are omitting, Sensei. It was SOOTHING."
Naell felt pain and embarrassment as he recalled what he felt at that moment.
The conversation got nowhere as Athena continued lecturing his son about the proper way to act.
"You should have buried your feces! Hoot!"
"It was just a tiny bit Mom, so I thought it would be ok! HOOT!"
"I'm really sorry Sebastian if my son's excreme--- action caused some troubles." Athena could only apologize as she recalled what Sebastian told her a while ago; the Forestlands' monsters became more unruly than usual.
"Hohoho... It is fine Athena."
'No, it is not Sensei! He enraged the monsters WITH HIS POOP.' Naell could only think this to himself. Even so, he somewhat pitied the young owl who already had a bump forming on his head.
In the end, the young owl was scolded severely, and was forced to perform dogeza before them.
Chapter 13
The travel time between the Forestlands and the Beryldot estate wasn't that far, but for Naell, it was the farthest mentally, as he was exhausted from trying to be polite to the blue-haired mage shop owner of Arigare.
Sestra and the Lieutenant throughout the journey accompanied Sebastian and Naell. The young master was smiling and spoke even softer than before, and even made use of the so-called customer service facade he had learned from his many part-time jobs back on Earth.
"So Young master, what kind of magic was that?" Sestra was inquiring about the magic Naell used that saved her life.
Those who heard the question started gathering closer towards the group. Even Sebastian's usually perfect smile, out of his curiosity, had cracks on it.
"Lady Sestra, do you mean this?" As Naell said that, small shining bits of mana began gathering towards the young mage.
"Just like I thought, that is complex magic... But that looks kinda different from the one before." Sestra said as she closely observed the palm-sized snow crystal that appeared and hovered above the young master's left palm.
Sebastian's gaze was full of interest while his face seemed to say "again with the surprises".
"Lady Sest---"
"Please just call me sister."
Upon hearing that, it then seemed to Naell that after getting to know her, she'd seem to be the cheerful-yet-strict kind.
"Sister Sestra, I wouldn't say it is complex but..."
"But?" Lieutenant Estra was the one who asked. Even an aura user like him knew of such magic.
COMPLEX MAGIC is a term used to characterize the craftier use of magic. Sebastian's utilization of [ FORTRESS ] could be considered as one.
That was why, most of them were quite surprised, since to their knowledge, mages would usually develop complex magic through long years of experience. Sebastian could only proudly smile at his mysterious student as he thought,
'Now that I think of it, I did not even teach him my fortress, yet he managed to make one.'
Naell knew of the basic composition behind things like fire--- fuel, heat, and oxygen. That was why he had a hard time explaining the concepts that barely existed in that world, as magic had mostly replaced the concept of common sense and science.
"But it was just a bigger snowflake."
.
.
.
All of them were flabbergasted, even Sebastian who was expecting a similar answer. Still, he was the one who managed to respond,
"That... Is true, but Naell, the magic behind the snow crystal you made is already complex. Not to mention, to form such a complicated figure with ease is already an incredible feat."
"Young master, it is as complex as teacher Sebastian's snow fortresses." Sestra could not hold herself back. Saying it was simple was like comparing it to her earth javelin.
"I did not form the snow per se... Just like sister Sestra mentioned, its form is different from the other one." Naell recalled how his favorite vocalist once sang, "Every snowflake's different just like you."
He then added on,
"I simply used magic to make some ice crystals, which then latched onto the dust particles around the atmosphere. All I had to do was make it bigger."
Upon explaining the concept behind his snow crystals, Naell noticed the gazes of confusion and mass jaw-drops.
"Ahhh, since summer started, I got into reading books which helped me understand things more clearly. Ha HA ha."
They could only laugh dryly at his response.
"And besides..."
"...It was a memento of my mother."
Silence and a long awkward sadness filled their surroundings. They were certain that Naell's cold eyes looking beyond the horizon, was actually the lonely gaze of a young boy.
Yet that couldn't be further from the truth. They never noticed how Naell was fidgeting from all the stares, nor did they know he just looked elsewhere to avoid their gazes.
'I'm sorry Alic--- Mom I was really hoping not to make an excuse out of you.'
"Young master, sorry for asking too much..." Lieutenant Estra was the one who apologized first while tapping his sister's shoulder. Soon, others followed suit by nodding apologetically.
"No, it's okay.''
"Still, it's no wonder you could pull that off, Young master. Your snow fortress could even block hordes of goblins."
The statement caught Sestra's attention.
"It was... Really you?" Sestra knew of the incident regarding the goblin invasion. Rumor had it that the one who made the snow fortress was actually a frosted ghostman bearing a translucent complexion, and not Sebastian.
Sebastian could only remind the Lieutenant after his oopsie.
"Lieutenant... That was a secret."
"I'm sorry Captain, Young master, I.."
"It is ok, Lieutenant Estra. I just don't really want anymore rumors about me, so I hope it will not spread."
"Understood, Young master." The Lieutenant and Sestra nodded in agreement. Both then thought that Naell was being a humble kid, straying away from all the achievements.
"Hohoho, It is just sad to take credit from my student's achievement."
"HA...Ha...ha..." Naell could only laugh. He knew achievements would only bring him closer to the Duke of Arigare, and that is not an option he was willing to take. Not to mention, being called a frosted ghostman was making him cringe.
With their arrival at the Beryldot estate, Naell was greeted and hugged by Lily upon entering their home. The Lieutenant carried on with Sebastian to report the status of the subjugation to Baron Fharom.
Naell's curiosity was piqued from hearing that someone visited their home, and that even his father was busy tending to the visitor's needs. He made guesses to soothe his curiosity.
'A high noble perhaps...'
Then a horrible thought greeted his mind,
'...Please not the Duke.' Naell wished sincerely as surprises like that really ought to kill him.
Fortunately, his suspicions were debunked seeing Sestra leave urgently to Arigare. She intended to report to the Adventurer's guild as soon as possible, and had no interest in the guest. With this, a sigh of relief escaped Naell's person.
Right after, he immediately sought a bath to cleanse both his body and his damaged mind from all the questions and near-death moments he had to face.
He then went to eat dinner and was surprised to see his family at the table, waiting for him. With their late arrival, he thought they'd already be done.
Sebastian was also seated which by then was an often occurrence in the household. Naell had no idea if that was the case with the old him, but he didn't question further as seeing his Sensei eat with them just felt right.
"Welcome back Elder and Naell." Said Lilia who couldn't hide her gladness, as both of them made it for dinner.
Naell's attention quickly diverted from his thoughts.
"Thank you, Mom."
"Hohoho"
Immediately, Baron Fharom asked his son. He could not wait as he was excited to see what Sebastian and Estra had told him.
"I heard from Elder Sebastian... Snow?"
"Yes, Father." Naell casually presented a snow crystal from his right hand. The seemingly pristine figure made the young Lily stand up with admiration.
"Woah... It's very pretty, brother!"
"It should be. I was making it while thinking of my adorable little sister."
The seven-year-old noticeably glowed from the statement.
"Hehehe"
"Well done. Your training bore fruit." Added on Baron Fharom who was wickedly smirking. Lilia smiled as she knew her husband's intentions of bragging it to the lovey-dovey couple.
"All thanks to your support, Father. Not to mention Mom, Lily, and Sensei's teaching."
"Grandpa is so cool!"
"Hohoho, It was because your brother is a genius, Little one."
Naell deactivated his magic and continued eating. His face was flushed with embarrassment as Lily and Sebastian continued on complimenting him. Watching them, Fharom and Lilia looked at the three with a lukewarm smile.
Months of the serene setting was satisfying to Naell. He felt at peace seeing the Beryldot family smiling and sitting together.
"By the way, Naell."
"Yes, Father."
"You better start preparing for your travel to the capital next week. It is alright to train, but for this week, I hope you will prioritize that first."
"I understand."
"It will be quite lonely without you here Naell." Lilia said while smiling, yet the sadness in her voice was prominent.
"Brother, don't go..." Naell saw how sincere Lilia's soft voice was. On the other hand, his sister was downcasted knowing her brother would be gone next week to study in the capital.
"Mom, Lily, I will come home often so please look forward to the presents I'll be bringing back!"
"Don't bribe me, brother!"
"Hohoho"
"Hahaha" They all laughed and continued eating the delicious food flooding their table, all at the warm comfort of their home.
But amidst the peaceful scene, no one noticed Naell fearfully flinch. A familiar feeling came over him.
'...W---What is this?' A strong hint of mana strongly pierced Naell's senses, before vanishing without warning. He quickly glanced over to Sebastian to see his reaction, yet he was greeted by his usual demeanor, calmly eating in the process.
'Was that just my imagination?" He was reminded of similar strong mana deep in the forest. Yet even with the brief appearance, he knew what he sensed was much stronger.
Naell caught himself deep in thought. He tried to seem unfazed and carried on with his meal, but even with his countless attempts of brushing it aside, the thought stayed in the back of his head.
Chapter 12
Is this what it feels like to have your life flash before your eyes?
It was naive of me to think that I could have repaid their kindness.
During the war, I was one of those who had almost lost everything... If it weren't for my brother's decision to apply as a soldier, we might have already died from poverty.
As I was young, I could only support him from afar, yet that was why, I too, have worked hard--- all just to be where I am today, so he could have a home to return to, just so I could repay their kindness.
...I wish I could have thanked Duke Mard for his kindness.
I wish I could have thanked teacher Sebastian for sheltering us in all those times.
I'm sorry Lady Rinca...
*******
As much as she would have wanted to save herself, Sestra knew she was powerless against the approaching axe.
When it comes to battles, superior strength would mostly prevail in the fight. Certainly, strategies and tactics are important, but overwhelming strength would naturally have the upper-hand.
Yet still, she firmly held her wooden wand, trying her best to defend herself with magic, but to no avail. Her mind was too unsettled to incantate any defensive spell.
Sestra could only close her eyes and wait for her demise, but to her surprise it did not come. Instead, she felt immense vibrations that were followed by a cold gust of fog. As she opened her eyes, the fog slowly settled, and the scene then came into view.
    The huge axe halted upon colliding with the large snow crystal. The shining silver crystal spewed out snow as it slowly coated the entirety of the axe.
Those who had seen it were stunned, yet the battle did not let them pause for so long. Sestra was the only one who stayed lost in a trance.
'Am I dreaming? Is this the afterlife?' But what awakened her senses was the approaching face of the young master of Beryldot, who couldn't hide his gentle voice of concern.
"Lady Sestra, are you okay?" His voice was far different from his red chilling eyes, pale skin, and silver hair; none of which would even show the warmth of his voice.
Sestra by then, felt guilty of her earlier prejudice towards Naell as she knew it was he who saved her life. She then gently spoke in gratitude.
"...Thank you for saving my life."
Naell smiled, hiding his fatigue. Using his limit continuously, took a toll on his body.
During the first half of the battle, Naell was somewhat preoccupied. He couldn't shake his concern for the lingering mana of the mysterious creature.
That was why he was so focused, to the point of using his limit to inspect every mana source within his vicinity. After a while, he was convinced that the creature was truly gone, and went on to help out in the conflict.
During the clash between the butler and the chaotic troll, Sebastian's magic was slightly inferior to the troll's brute aura, but because of his tactics, he had succeeded in defeating him.
Little by little, the accumulated splashes of water from both the arrogant troll's body, and their surroundings, resulted in the troll's inevitable defeat.
It then happened in an instant, that the chaotic troll's last attempt of mayhem was prevented by Naell.
*******
The battle ended with no fatalities on their side. As for the deceased monsters, it was the job of the fire mages to purify their bodies. In the book, Arts and Magic, burials were often cleansed by mages, as it was a belief that,
[ All things came pure, therefore, all shall be purified. ]
In their return to the Beryldot Estate, their pace was much slower. Some weren't too keen as they were exhausted, but because of the injured, none could complain.
Unbeknownst to any of them, Naell was actually glad about their pace, as he was weakened from the battle. The only things he did not like were the constant stares and murmurs targeting him.
As bad luck would have it, Naell wasn't smart socially, that was why he thought that those stares and murmurs were hostility for his bad reputation.
Little did he know, it was all admiration and respect.
Admiration for his power, that even the Lieutenant, who knew of Naell's late awakening, couldn't help but be left in awe.
Respect for saving Sestra. She felt guiltier upon hearing the gossip of how the young master's power carried risks, as he was still incapable of handling his mana.
The snow crystal that protected Sestra, seemed like new magic to everyone. Yet they were familiar with its symbol, due to it being the emblem of Berlydot. It was told that the family symbol was to honor Baron Fharom's first wife, Alicia.
The Lieutenant and Sestra approached Naell and Sebastian. They could see based on his demeanor, that their young master truly was exhausted.
Sebastian was somewhat tired, but because of his accumulated experience, one could see that he could still fight. His butler attire was somewhat ragged, yet his warm voice accompanied by his smile, had not disappeared.
"Hohoho, Good job, both of you."
"No, it was because of your strength, Captain. Also... Thank you, Young master, for saving my sister's life." After the death of the chaotic troll, Estra led the members to fend off the remaining monsters.
Sestra's black robe was somewhat dirtied with soil, but overall she still looked fine. Unlike her brother, whose newly dented plate armor matched with his ruffled gray hair.
Sestra was hesitant to speak, but the determination in her blue eyes could be seen.
All the while, Naell was smiling at them. Onlookers were dubious as to why he looked more tamed than before. Little did they know, Naell was a natural airhead whenever he'd get sleepy.
Sestra nodded apologetically to Sebastian who somewhat understood what she meant. She then bowed down to Naell and said,
"Young master, thank you for saving me... and I truly apologize for my behavior back then..."
.
.
.
The blue mage's words startled Naell. He was somewhat confused, yet he decided to pat Sestra's shoulder anyway.
"Lady Sestra, please don't bow down, and you have nothing to apologize for."
The gazes that he got made him more panicky. He thought they were angry for making such a beautiful woman apologize, but they were actually gazes of comfort, and respect as they murmured,
''Yes, our Young master really is kind.''
"I'm just glad I could save you. I'm sure you would have done the same." Naell added on while continuously patting Sestra's shoulders, with his now trembling hands.
Sestra smiled as she straightened her posture. She then realized Naell was misunderstanding her apology.
"No, I'm apologizing for a different matter, Young master."
"Hmmm... Have we met before? I'm sorry if I do not remember you... but if I've done something wrong, I truly am sorry."
Sestra then thought that maybe Naell was just a misunderstood kid, who often misunderstood things himself. So plainly she said,
"Not really from that, but by how I acted in front of you. You see... I'm actually from Arigare, and I knew the Duke family well--- especially Lady Rinca."
When Naell heard the name, he immediately froze a bit. He was certain that at that point, one move could get him killed. He bowed down facing Sestra as to not incite her wrath.
"I have done things I'm not really proud of... But you see, I was a naive kid back then. I'm not saying it is reasonable to forgive me, but I can promise you--- I will not trouble the Young mistress with my presence ever again."
Sebastian, Lieutenant, and Sestra saw Naell with his quivering eyes. They could see the sincerity in his apology, but at the same time, they sensed he was isolated.
They were quite curious on why a 15-year-old boy could unknowingly present himself as one shouldering a heavy burden.
Sebastian could only pat Naell's back. He knew that his young master was a bad kid back then, but for a reason. He also knew that his young master would often bad mouth anyone, but was never violent. That was why he was suspicious, and got even more so when Naell changed.
He--- Enzo also found it weird when Naell of the novel, who was only good at trash-talking, just started using force. Even in the forums, most thought that volume 1 of Arts and Magic wasn't well-thought-out, as the history of the first villain and how he came to be, seemed barely glimpsed upon. The circumstances of why the old Naell started being physically abusive was weird for most readers, but some just accepted it as a plot for the novel, a plothole at that.
Sestra just smiled as she sensed the sincerity in his voice.
"Apology accepted."
Naell then nodded and finally thought it was all over, yet he saw Sestra's blue eyes as he felt the piercing gaze on his now paler skin.
"You got lucky too." Teasingly said Sestra, who was grinning.
As to inquire, Naell managed to smile a little bit under the sudden pressuring atmosphere.
"Hmmm?"
"Lady Rinca told me that had you dueled with her instead, you might have lost some limbs."
.
.
.
Sestra recalled how troubled Lady Rinca was before they canceled the engagement.
At the age of 16, nobles would be introduced to high society. One burden that nobles immediately shoulder upon their introduction, would be the announcement of their official engagement. Once announced, it would be hard to cancel. That was why, Rinca at that time, was afraid of having her engagement officially recognized.
Rinca despised Naell because he truly was an arrogant person. She knew he loathed nobles and hated commoners, which was why she didn't really want to marry him. She often told Sestra about how she and Naell were usually on bad terms.
"He wasn't really a bad kid when we were young, Oneesan. Yet, after Auntie's death, he changed. He got really loud and annoying..."
So it was really shocking when Rinca told of what had transpired,
"I really thought for sure that he would not dare hurt anyone..."
Sestra even believed she heard the sad murmur of Rinca before the young mistress changed the topic herself.
"Especially me..."
'Why did he hit her then? Was it all an act?' Sestra was now even more curious, as mysteries kept building around the young master of Beryldot.
Chapter 11
"That's!!!---"
A monster that was covered by fresh blood, came forth spewing out a dark aura from both its body, and the gigantic axe it gripped. With its height and build, anyone could've easily mistaken it for an orc, yet its nimbleness said otherwise.
His grim laughter could be heard throughout the area, and the nearby trolls that were with him, began to sneer.
"To think a persona is here... We've been negligent!" Lieutenant Estra was gritting his teeth just like the rest of them upon seeing the chuckling troll.
If mages gain elements upon reaching a certain tier, martial artists gain what they call a [PERSONA].
Usually, an aura user would have a white translucent aura covering them. But upon gaining experience, and an understanding of auras, they would, later on, gain their persona.
Sebastian misunderstood Naell's expression as confusion, so he briefly explained.
"Listen carefully, Naell. A persona is an advanced skill that differentiates aura users from other martial artists."
Persona is divided into three traits: Genuine [red] aura users have precise control of aura; chaotic [black] aura users have the most destructive forces; and neutrals [silver] are balanced aura users.
At that moment, Naell recalled an unpleasant memory when he was reading the book, Arts and Magic. One of Andrew's companions who was the only neutral martial artist in his team, died.
'Neutral martial artists basically have nothing going for them. That's just sad, I kinda liked that dude.'
Persona was also hailed as the heart of a martial artist, but it did not mean a genuine artist would always be kind; nor that a chaotic one would always be evil. Genuine aura users have a strong sense of their own justice, chaotics have a fiery heart, while neutral aura users are those who think before their heart.
"Get ready!" Shouted one of the high ranking soldiers, as they unsheathed their weapons.
With a cloud of smoke, Sebastian's right hand suddenly held a cane that looked like a refined piece of onyx.
"Looks like I need to help today."
"That would be a big help Captain." Both Lieutenant Estra and Sestra's pale complexions became warmer, seeing a confident Sebastian standing at the front.
Only Sebastian's unfazed look and the cold gaze of Naell, (which was actually a sign of fear) was misunderstood as bravery.
Sebastian wasn't really that confident facing a personified monster. Even so, he knew that the monster hadn't awakened yet, therefore he knew he had a chance at victory.
Naell knew by then, that a being who had reached his/her peak needed only a bit of experience to reach their awakening. Yet usually, most would fail to surpass their limit.
Sebastian knew as well that a personified monster like that could reach their awakening at any moment. That is why, he too could not let his guard down, because it would take a person of a higher rank to defeat such thing.
Sebastian then remembered what Naell mentioned earlier.
"But the orcs aren't the mana I'm detecting, Sensei."
"Naell, is this the aura you were sensing a while ago?"
"I'm sorry Sensei, but It's not him... or her either."
"What do you mean by that--- Young master?" Interjected Sestra, who readily held her wooden wand. She was already anticipating the clash.
"I'm certain as we got closer that it was mana. Unfortunately, this aura is not it."
"Then that is probably that troll's boss?" Lieutenant asked while looking at Naell. Others, including Sestra, were also looking at the young mage nervously.
They knew that the trolls were encircling their position slowly as to trap them inside the Forestlands.
Sebastian then asked his student who at the moment looked distracted.
"So what do you think Naell?"
"If possible, I would like to continue searching for that mana, as it might just be lurking." They all agreed as they knew well that if that being truly was waiting in ambush, they would have to prioritize their retreat.
Even so, Estra could not help but dubiously ask,
"Is that even possible?"
The one who answered the lieutenant's inquiry, was Sestra.
"It is, if that mana is from someone way above us... Practically, an awakened one."
Awakened beings have the capability to hide or make their presence known.
"But I think that mana meant no harm. Still, it is better to take precautions."
Lieutenant Estra's worries lessened upon hearing Naell's conclusion.
"It is a good thing if that is the case." Even Sestra, who hated Naell, could not help but voice out her relief.
Sebastian then said a theory that they all agreed upon.
"That mana is superior to all the creatures here. It might have been the reason why higher class monsters have been restless in the Forestland."
Before they could even reply, the monsters had begun their attack. The personified troll, without even a hint of hesitation, ran amok towards Sebastian, sensing he was the strongest out of them all.
Mages, who were at the center, started to form a circular barrier. Soldiers and adventures who excelled at defending, protected the mages upfront.
As the collision continued, the mages already began feeling exhausted. Their mana was diminishing by the second as they continued repairing the shields that were being chipped away by the personified troll.
The mages did not waver, as their mana shields' main purpose was to protect their allies from long-range projectiles. Clashing with the melee personified troll and his minions, was the responsibility of the high ranking warriors.
Meanwhile, Sebastian continued to cooperate with them. Instead of putting up a snow fortress that was unsuitable for their location, the butler's precise highly pressurized water met with the personified troll.
[ WATER BEAM ]
Sestra and the rest dealt with the approaching B-class trolls that could put pressure on the lower rank members.
[ SPEARTH ]
Her earth javelin could not pierce the monsters' bodies easily, as they were rigid and skillfully coated with aura.
The battle was difficult, as trolls were nimble creatures regardless of their weapon of choice. To top it all off, the Forestland was somewhat cramped to formulate a good strategy against its experienced inhabitants.
The pressurized water disappeared every time it met the powerful blows of the personified troll.
The troll was soaked with water but his chaotic aura was still spewing from his gigantic axe. He was arrogantly taunting them with the gesture, as he was bold enough not to coat his body with aura.
The continuous exchange made the members and even the monsters feel fearful of the power of these two individuals. The power to keep summoning high magic and the strength to obliterate it.
The members that met the impact of the personified troll's axe struggled to even stand up.
Only Lieutenant Estra, with his aura in his giant sword, could slightly match the personified troll's speed, but not it's power. Blood could be seen dripping from his lips as he struggled to speak.
"Captain... I do not think we can prolong this fight."
Sebastian then smiled and nodded. As to respond, they saw his yellow mana, brightly shining around his cane, and with a thump in the ground, it scattered.
At first, Sebastian was struggling with the attempt to pierce the personified troll. That was why he openly welcomed the troll's arrogance, as he planned to use his water to cover the troll's body and turn its surroundings into snow.
[ SNOWIFIED ]
Snow quickly began to spread across the ground, before running up the body of the then enraged personified troll who was now aware of the danger of his arrogance. Naell was amazed at how his Sensei came up with the idea.
Fearing the danger, the personified troll went ahead and leaped strongly, leaving a huge crack on the ground, yet the snow continued spreading into his body.
The high ranking warriors did not waste Sebastian's efforts as they took advantage of the troll's then slower pace. Other trolls began attacking more aggressively, sensing the danger befalling their leader.
Feeling the continuous forming of snow in his body, the personified troll's ragged breathing made him panic. All of a sudden, he raised his huge chaos-filled axe to his head out of despair. The warriors were fended off as his rage brought forth his bursting aura, cutting through the surroundings.
He then used all of his aura and threw his axe forward. Unable to respond, the warriors watched as the axe ripped through the wind and headed towards another battlefield.
Standing in the trajectory was Sestra who felt the impending danger she was in, but she could not move, more so incantate her magic.
*BOOM*
Icy smoke filled the air, as they saw a falling mummified troll barely breathing. Yet their attention was at the location where the axe flew.
"Sestra!!" Lieutenant Estra's face was filled with worry as to what might have happened to his sister. Yet as they were in a battlefield, he knew a small opening could easily lead to death.
Luckily, their surroundings had traces of Sebastian's magic. Upon order, it acted as a shield towards the distracted members.
"Everyone, focus! Lieutenant, she is ok." The loud grandfatherly tone echoed throughout the battlefield. The soldiers and adventurers who got distracted passionately pressed on forward to end the fight.
Lieutenant Estra quickly regained his composure, and without hesitation, led the battle towards its end.
Chapter 10
Nobles have the responsibility to maintain peace within their respective territories. Occasionally, invading monsters would bring chaos and instill fear into the hearts of their people. In these situations, nobles would dispatch soldiers and commission quests in the Adventurer's guild to stop the invading monsters. Nevertheless, they would never clash against monsters living a secluded life, not to mention, that is rarely the case.
Most monsters are hostile creatures. It was told in an ancient lore that the first demon king was the one who created the first monster. Monsters then aided the demons in the War of the World that lasted for a hundred years.
Going back, nobles had responsibilities to their fief, thus they often requested for the adventurers' manpower. At the same time, they would deploy soldiers of their own for missions, such as what they would be doing that day.
Naell would sometimes join those kinds of quests to gain first-hand experience and to further adapt to his mana. It was made possible as he was the son of a Baron and the student of an honorary B-rank adventurer. The butler has always been welcome to participate, since they knew of his capabilities.
That day, the soldiers and adventurers alike were tasked with a B-rank quest. They were currently on their way towards their destination where there were reports of monster sightings near the western border of the Beryldot estate. They did not bring horses nor big carriages, as their destination wasn't suited for it.
Missions have different ranks, and SSS would be a calamity like situation.
The Forestlands in the western border of the Beryldot estate, was a dangerous place. The subjugation was tasked to enter the inner depths of the Forestland, that even experienced adventurers would try to avoid.
B-class monsters often populated that place, which resulted in frequent clashes to exert dominance against one another. Consequently, awakened monsters sometimes evolved from these conflicts.
Awakened monsters are considered A-class and above. Their power to rule over lower-class monsters is dangerous, considering they might cross the human territory. The awakened monster will also gain conscience, making them civilized or intelligently brutal.
Awakened monsters or animals that reach enlightenment will name themselves. Either the monster or animal will get another elemental magic or their aura will reach its peak.
Unlike the animal race that is neutral even upon awakening, the monster race was often chaotic.
Naell and Sebastian were approached by a bulky man whose voice was too soft for his body.
"We are always honored to have you here, Captain."
Sebastian replied warmly, as he seemingly knew the person very well.
"Hohoho, no need for formalities, Lieutenant."
Lieutenant Estra was a C-rank soldier. He was formerly under Sebastian's command during the Continental War. He, later on, decided to work under Baron Fharom, since the northern border of the Autumn kingdom has always been his home.
The bulky Lieutenant smiled as he said,
"You'll always be a captain for me."
The Lieutenant's bulky body was being amplified by the plate armor he often wore. He had the face of a happy-go-lucky uncle that suited his grayish hair. One would often think he was the type who would spoil their siblings' children.
"...And we always welcome your support, young Master."
Lieutenant Estra flinched seeing a cold Naell nodding formally towards him.
He was always scared of seeing the young master as he was often described as the bad seed of Beryldot. Even so, he knew that the cold young master had a warm heart that protected not just the adventures and soldiers, but a whole village. Still, his young master always had this demeanor which would often scare people.
Naell's cold look was actually him being nervous, as he was able to detect the surrounding monsters.
'I can sense a couple of B-class monsters... Even traces of stronger mana.'
"I'll do my best to support you, Lieutenant."
"T...Thank you, Young master!"
Unlike the Grassy plains at the Northern Beryldot, Forestlands have more complex landscapes as they are an ecosystem that is inhabited by plants, trees, and monsters.
Upon arriving at the place, soldiers and adventures all readied themselves, as they sensed the mana and aura circling around the forest.
Lieutenant Estra started to converse with them again, without letting his guard down. As an experienced martial artist, even he could sense the lingering traces of a peak B-class monster.
"Few animals live here because strong monsters dwell in this forest."
"Hohoho, I could even sense a stronger being that might cause us some trouble."
The high ranking adventurers and soldiers in that expedition, could only sense the faint traces of the peak B-class monster. However, Sebastian, who was the strongest among them, could sense it better.
"Good morning teacher Claus, B--- Lieutenant, today's gonna be a long day."
"I'm lucky to have a capable mage like you here Si---Sestra."
"Hohoho. It's been quite some time, Sestra. Congratulations on your promotion."
"Thank you, Teacher."
"Hohoho"
Sestra was the adventurers' acting leader in that subjugation. She was a bright blue mage that was recently promoted into a B-rank mage. Aside from being an adventurer, she owned a magic shop at Arigare estate.
She was wearing a standard black mage robe. Her fierce blue eyes matched her long blue hair. Some said that she looked more like a fighter than a mage.
"...Young master, Naell." Sestra felt indebted to Duke Mard as he was the one who officially welcomed them to his domain after the war. As someone who cared for Lady Rinca Arigare, she despised Naell for his actions towards her lady. She could not hide her tone and irritation towards the young master.
"Good morning, Lady Sestra." Naell felt the cold attitude of Sestra towards him, nevertheless, knowing the old Naell, he couldn't even begin to imagine what he had done.
"Lieutenant, we should start our formation right away."
"Ah right... Captain, Young master, please excuse us." Lieutenant Estra and Sestra nodded, as they hurriedly went ahead of them.
Sebastian then spoke as to comfort Naell, who looked dejected by Sestra's display of attitude.
"Do not worry about it. She's actually a nice lady."
"Oh... I do not mind that Sensei." Naell was actually pondering about the traces of mana that he could not pinpoint, when a group of green agile creatures came running towards them.
"Trolls!"
Forest trolls are stronger than goblins and are even more agile. They are often classified as peak C to low B-class monsters.
The soldiers and adventurers went on their formation. Melee fighters went and met the trolls, while long-range artists and mages provided long-range artillery.
As to not damage the forest, a subjugation like that called for its participants to try their best to fight precisely and clean, as the forest was also a good cover to protect the nearby villages.
Trolls would use their agile movement to skillfully throw their weapons or cut down their unlucky opponents. Luckily, most of the participants were experienced enough to predict the trajectory of the trolls' weapons.
On the other hand, support mages would use their mana shield for protection, and hinder the trolls' agility, by slowing or blocking their path. A martial artist with their aura of strength would then finish them off.
[ SPEARTH ]
Sestra with her experience, precisely shot earth javelins towards the approaching trolls, impaling them swiftly in the chest.
Naell could always appreciate seeing the movement of experienced and smarter beings. He thought he could get used to seeing dead bodies, but he always reminds himself that killing was not an option.
'Making them unable to move or cutting some parts of their body would suffice!'
Some were in awe seeing how innovatively Naell was using his magic. Since he didn't have an affinity to earth magic, what he did was mix his magic water from the soil that was already present in the forest, making a slippery surface for the trolls to walk into.
"That's... Quagmire." Some adventures were shouting about the magic [ quagmire ]. It is actually a combination of earth and water magic. With a stronger affinity for earth and another element, one could transcend into an [alchemist].
Those who knew Naell easily dismissed the idea as they knew that his elements were water and wind. Those who could understand what he was doing could only be amazed.
For Sestra, who was seeing this for the first time, she was surprised; firstly, because of Naell's capabilities; and second, for using his magic to defend the soldiers and adventurers.
'It might look easy but a small amount of water won't make any impact, and an amount too large would definitely destroy the land...'
'...And to actually use different magic at once... Going as far as making sure we won't get hurt.' Sestra too, upon seeing Naell for the first time, really cemented in her heart that this cold-looking young master could actually hurt her lady. Yet as they went deeper, she could only doubt what she knew.
The subjugation continued on with the occasional ambush by trolls, goblins, and B-class orcs who were bigger and bulkier than the two.
They were lucky enough that the orcs in Beryldot's forestland were few in numbers, that was why they could fight head-on.
"But the orcs aren't the mana I'm detecting, Sensei."
"That is true. But that mana... As we go deeper is actually a fainting one." Sebastian and the other experienced adventurers have realized it all too well. It could have been dying mana that had been collateral of duels between the forests' predators or prey.
What they did not know was that Naell could actually feel the intention of the creature's mana.
"It's different from the auras and mana that these monsters are omitting, Sensei. It was SOOTHING."
.
.
.
"Even if you can't capitalize on your usage, there are things only higher ranking mages like you can detect." Just by that conversation alone, Sebastian could guess that even if his student's mana detection was below his, Naell was better when it came to detecting the intentions of the user.
Then again, martial Artists whose expertise was the aura of intention, were capable of detecting far beyond what a high ranking mage could do.
As they were nearing their destination, bodies of orcs and other weaker creatures could be seen. The stench of blood made some of the members of the subjugation feel nausea as well as Naell who was acting as if it wasn't affecting him one bit.
The paler looking Naell's wavy hair seemed translucent as the shade of light in the forest shined upon him.
Even Sestra found it mystical to look at, yet some of them felt that the young master looked more like the final boss of a dungeon, he who would soon bring forth havoc with his bloody looking eyes.
*cough*
Sebastian interjected as to distract all of them from their seemingly similar thoughts.
"Looks like a battle of territory."
Estra nodded in acknowledgment, while the blue haired mage uttered cautiously in response to the danger she was sensing.
"Something is amiss here, Lieutenant."
"Get the adventurers ready, Sestra."
They were having a conversation together with Sebastian, Naell, and other high ranking soldiers.
"Hohoho, if needed be, I'll do my part."
"That would be a big help Captain!" Estra could not help but express his enthusiasm, knowing an experienced and famous mage such as Sebastian would join the battle.
As they were formulating their strategy, mages and martial artists alike flinched as they sensed the aura that was hastily approaching their location.
"Get ready soldiers!" Shouted Lieutenant Estra. The visible sweat from his neck could be seen. Their formation had been fortified as all of them could sense the [ aura of strength ] of the approaching creature.
Chapter 9
The lovey-dovey Sunheart couple could not hide their shock. Since both of them medically treated people, they were more sensitive to mana and aura; this was especially the case for the aura master, Drew.
Both of them could feel Naell's mastery over the two elemental magic circling around the palms of his hands.
Andrea was the first to speak. She was still in awe but noticeably less than the two. This was all thanks to Alicia, who in the past often surprised her with those kinds of things.
"Are you sure you are not Acia dressed up as a boy?"
.
.
.
"Ma'am Andrea... I have a man---ly."
"Please call me Auntie~"
"Erm... I'm quite manly figure-wise to be called a lady."
'No, you are not.' Thoughts that the three of them could not relay as to not hurt Naell's feelings.
*cough*
Sebastian, as to get the couple's attention and to distract Naell from seeing their gaze of pity towards him, had managed to speak as he recovered from being shocked.
"Well done Naell, Hohoho. I wouldn't be surprised if you told me you could use ice magic too."
"Actually, I have no idea how to even combine these two." Naell then put his palms closer together, but as soon as he did that, the wind and water magic disappeared.
Upon seeing that, The lovey-dovey couple and Sebastian let out a sigh of relief. Any further revelation would have made them lifeless. Naell was truly not for the faint of heart.
But before they could truly relax, they heard Naell's voice, as clear as water and as chilly as the wind. He smiled without a care as he nonchalantly declared,
"...Although Sensei, I think I might be able to pull it off, if you could show me your snow!"
"..."
Drew loudly breathed out as he laid back on his chair, brushing up his already messy spiked up hair.
"...It is not an exaggeration to say your mana is overflowing, just like with the dragons."
Andrea added on as she remembered her good friend. A warm giggle and a caring voice filled the room.
"And your control of mana is way better than Acia, Nell... If she was here, I'm sure she'd brag about you haughtily all the time."
"HAHAHA !"
"Hohoho"
.
.
.
The check-up went smoothly with occasional childish laughter and scolding. Naell's relationship with Andrew's parents became better, and a somewhat overly doting Uncle and Auntie had been made.
Sebastian frowned seeing the three kids getting along. The idea of having a cheeky student and at the same time an irresponsible young master in the future bothered him.
As they were leaving, Andrea again pointed out things that Naell should not forget. Her husband, Drew who was just standing in the back with his arms crossed was grinning and nodding.
Drew then silently approached Sebastian. The butler could understand a bit, as to why he cautiously took their conversation away from Naell's ears.
"Sensei, Naell---"
"I know... I hope we can find a way."
Andrea began as she faced Naell who was already in the exit. She lowered herself to directly meet the young mage's gaze. She then smiled, and with a doting Auntie-like voice and appearance, started to talk,
"Remember Nell, your body right now is not capable of using all your mana."
Naell nodded in agreement. Andrea continued while glancing towards Sebastian, who was cautiously nodding as well.
"Sooo--- it is better for you to limit your mana usage to at least below 50%."
"Hohoho, so the remaining months will be utilized for your body to get used to your mana!"
"Yes Auntie. Looking forward to the training, Sensei."
Andrea could not hide her happiness upon hearing the word "Auntie".
"Hehehe ...Auntie."
They bid farewell and decided to go home and rest for tomorrow. As for Naell, without anyone's knowledge, he continued training even when he was alone.
*******
Spring on the Western continent was colder at night. Especially within the Berlydot estate that was near the Northern border of the Western kingdom.
The novel described the whole world as having 4 seasons that had a 3 month interval. Human kingdoms named their kingdom with correlation to the continent's main season--- which happened to be the name of the continent. North was the Country of Christmas, West was the Autumn Kingdom, East was the Easterside Empire, while the South was called The Republic of Summer.
There were other realms and kingdoms that were ruled by other races, such as the Elven kingdom in the Fall continent, and the demon realm, said to be at the center of the world that had not been ventured yet, due to their perilous seas and the dangerous demon race.
Naell was actually reading all of that again in the Beryldot library. He needed to confirm his knowledge and studies for his soon departure to the capital.
Even so, he did not neglect his magic training. His body still could not handle his mana, even with his control and mastery of different magic vastly improving.
Thus, in his free time, Naell still read books that he truly loved, all while using a little bit of mana to train.
'50% isn't really a problem. I don't intend to get involved anyway.' Naell thought about the story of the book. He did not know if upon entering that world, any changes had occurred towards the story. He recalled the events that should have happened by then, starting from the bandit hideout that would awaken Andrew's magic.
'Andrew and co should have arrived in the capital by now.'
After arriving in the capital, Andrew and his friends will further train to hone their abilities. They will also actively do missions from the Adventurer's guild to cover their expenses.
'There, they will be reunited with Rinca.' Naell's thoughts were complicated. Truthfully speaking, He did not want to go to the capital and study since it would twist the story of the book.
'If it weren't for that succession problem.' Not only would it change the story, but Naell was afraid of meeting anyone of them, especially Rinca Arigare, the old Naell's ex-fiance.
'I really have to do my best to keep myself out of their sight.' There was not an inch of his being that wanted to meet any of them. He could only plan ahead as much as he could, but accidents were bound to happen, just like how he met the Sunheart lovey-dovey couple, regardless of how happy it turned out to be.
"And to really keep me out of the story." He clenched both of his fists as hard as he could. He unintentionally spoke his mind, and louder than he should have, at that. Thus, the mystery of the [Shrieking book] had been solidified as one of the true horrors that awaits the visitors of Beryldot's library.
*******
Months passed by in the blink of an eye. Naell's body was finally getting used to his mana but 55% was his current limit. He had talent in learning and copying magic by sensing the flow of mana on that said magic, but his body was still mediocre.
'Not only can he use ice, but also copy my snow.' When Sebastian showed Naell his snow magic, the butler almost had a heart attack upon seeing how the young mage, not only made snow, but copied the principles behind it to produce ice.
They trained on the Grassy plains on several occasions. Most of their training involved overcoming the body's limit by continually using mana detection, elemental magic, levitation, and mana shield simultaneously.
There were times when they would even participate in missions with relation to monsters. That was where Sebastian first witnessed that the 50% mana usage of his student was already the equivalent of a B-class adventurer's.
Most of the soldiers and adventurers could not believe it when Naell began to take part in those said missions. His long white hair and red eyes didn't fail to make them quiver in fear.
And yet, the wind that repelled the invading monsters, and the mana barrier reinforced with the element of water that safeguarded those in need, left most of them in awe.
That was why, without Naell's knowledge, his bad reputation in his estate started to fade, and was even more so during the time a huge crowd of goblins headed by a peak C-class Goblin Champion started to invade a nearby village.
In their world, goblins were the usual small green creatures known for their numbers and nimble bodies. They would usually be D-class monsters with the exception of the evolved ones, such as the C-class, or even the A-class Goblin king.
Sebastian at the time of the invasion, was preoccupied elsewhere. As he suspiciously kept his destination a secret, Naell couldn't help but jokingly think of the North Pole. The young mage was then alone training when he detected the incursion. He immediately went to the troubled village after reporting it to the nearby guards.
By then, Naell's mana detection magic at 50% was capable of being equal or slightly below Sebastian's own detection magic.
Upon arriving shortly with the use of his levitation magic, Naell saw everyone's fear.
The residents at first, speculated that Naell was the leader of the invasion. It soon changed, when he hastily made a sturdy snow fortress and slowed down the advances of the Goblins. By then, the villagers were already grateful for his actions.
Baron Fharom, upon hearing the news, immediately dispatched the soldiers of Beryldot to subjugate the invading goblins. As a result, human casualties were avoided. Only Naell, who had to maintain his shield for hours, had suffered exhaustion which resulted in his collapse.
Naell's fainting could have been prevented, had he only chosen to go on the offense rather than defend, but as someone who once lived on earth, killing someone was taboo for him. Not to mention, that method would have surely caused human casualties as the goblins reached hundreds.
When he had woken up, he immediately went and told the village chief to not spread word of what he did. He even went so far as to use his Sensei aka the [Fortress] to change the story into how Sebastian Claus prevented the goblin invasion.
Naell had a reason for not wanting to be known or even stand out to the public. He knew how much of a hassle it would be to become a hero of some sort, but mostly he did all that to avoid having to go to Duke Arigare's place, the home of where he thought he'd surely breathe his last.
Little did Naell know, tales of his heroic deeds have already spread in his estate, therefore lessening his bad reputation.
"Naell, that is all for today." Sebastian approached him while clapping both of his hands together. Naell then halted his mana, and a slightly out of breath mage was then seen standing feebly.
"Thank you, Sensei." Somewhat disappointed, Naell could only respond with a complicated look in his eyes.
'I won't last a day if I ever need to run from someone strong or shield myself from a big explosion.'
Misunderstanding Naell's demeanor, Sebastian could only apologize as he thought he was lacking.
"I'm sorry, Naell. I can only do this much. I'm sure during your studies in the capital you'll be able to grow immensely."
"You've been a great teacher, Sensei. My body is to blame." Naell was of course just scared of going to the capital. Sebastian then patted his shoulder before speaking,
"Hohoho, we still have weeks before you go to the capital, Naell. For now, let us go back and rest. We will have to be early tomorrow!"
Chapter 8
âJust do what I did Naell. Focus your mana on the ball, then your element will show itself.â
Naell was about to place his hand on the ball, but he felt fear as he knew the glass ball was quite costly.
âHow much should I put in anyway?â
Sebastian heartily let out a laugh.
âYou donât need to worry about that. When determining oneâs element, you should pour as much as you can control so that even the weakest affinity you have, will be seen.â
âHohoho--- And this thing is a good mana conductor that can even absorb high-rank magesâ mana with ease.â
Naell with a sigh of relief, placed both of his palms on the crystallized ball. As he exerted a lot of mana, the clear ball was then filled with two bright distinct colors. Yet before he could even look at his Sensei, a creak followed by the leaking smell of acrid burnt plastic and strands of white mana, seeped through the cracks of the crystallized ball.
.
.
.
âSensei, I...â Naell was the first to respond. He got paler and scared as he knew the ball was quite expensive.
He wanted to apologize and quickly perform dogeza but his body then felt heavy as his mind felt lighter. He staggered as he all of a sudden felt dizzy.
â...â
Sebastian was at a loss for words. Breaking the crystal ball like that meant Naellâs mana was above the high-ranking mages and on par with the named mages. He took into account that the young master possessed white mana. Still, he was confident that the ball wouldnât break, since newly awakened mages should have a hard time handling mana to their fullest.
âNot to mention, Naell cannot use elemental magic.â
Of course, high-rank mages like Sebastian could destroy the ball if they chose to via their elemental magic or directly penetrating one side.
âNaell did nothing like that. He did it normally.â Sebastian saw how Naell put mana to test his elemental magic. He then remembered how the young mage easily pulled off the mana shield and levitation which both made him gasp.
âThat was incredible but... This shouldâve been different.â As Sebastian was deep in thought, he heard the staggering voice of Naell. He saw him looking frail and exhausted, barely maintaining his position.
Sebastian then hastily approached Naell from the side, guiding his back to lie down. He sensed no abnormality with the young mageâs mana being replenished normally.
âNaell, are you ok?â
âSensei, Iâm sorry...â
âYou need not be, Iâm to blame. Iâve failed to notice your control and mana is above than expected.â
âBut still, itâs quite expensi---â
Sebastian then with a smile, reassuringly said,
âDo not worry about it. Having a student like you is way more valuable than one ball, Hohoho.â
They decided to take a break before going back to training. After some time, Naell recovered and seated facing his Sensei. The damaged ball was already poofed out by Sebastian.
âNaell, just as I thought, your elemental magic is just like your momâs. It is water and wind and you both have a high affinity towards it.â
Before it cracked, they managed to see a strong gust of wind and flowing deep blue water, clashing against each other.
âI hope I can learn ice and snow as well, Sensei.â
Elemental magic can further be improved by a mage as they study or gain an understanding of their element. For example, a standard fire and wind elemental mage can produce a blue flame. Fire and water can produce steam. Some could even develop a unique elemental magic, like Sebastianâs snow that even Alicia could barely do.
âHohoho, your mom at first, was really terrible with mana control. She just blasted everything since she couldnât lower her output. She had a hard time producing ice since she lacked control, causing both of her affinities to then clash with each other.â
â...I can imagine how hard it was for you Sensei.â
âNot at all, Hohoho.â
Naell smiled, still looking tired after what happened. Sebastian noticed it but still, he sensed no problem with his mana.
âIs it possible...?â As Sebastian was pondering about Naellâs condition, he decided to end their training and go to a doctor to properly assess his studentâs condition.
*******
Doctors in their world also specialize in different fields, such as mages who can heal, aura artists who are better at detecting abnormalities and enemies than mages, and the normal doctors who perform surgeries.
âI forgot...â Naell was a bit stiff when he entered the clinic together with his Sensei. The hospital in the Beryldot estate was at the center of its territory.
Three doctors and three assistants were responsible for that clinic, and it wasnât that shabby since Baron Fharom made sure it could house 3 families at once. The white 3 floored clinic was also managed by two renowned A-rank adventurers. The aura master, Drew aka the [Front Assassin] and his wife, the light mage, Andrea.
Sebastian was quite annoyed at how the couple was still affectionately holding hands while examining Naell. He could not help but agree with the rumors. It was said that often, cured patients of the two would contract a new disease, called BITTERNESS.
âThe protagonistâs parents...â
Sebastian saw a stiff and fidgeting Naell as they were greeted by the tall and scruffy Drew, while it was Andrea who asked the troubled young mage.
âYoung master, are you ok?â
Naell flinched as he knew the lovey-dovey couple that was described in the book, were past veterans of war. A small pat on the back meant spiral paralysis. A thorough examination could certainly mean a hard execution.
The Sunheart lovey-dovey couple were both odd monsters in their own way.
Andrea Sunheart was known for her capabilities as a light mage. She was also an orange-yellow mage that was rumored to become the[Sun Witch]just like her good friend, Alicia. But because of her no death policy, she became a healer.
Even so, there was once a time, Andrea used her power of sun rays, to obliterate a fortress of the undead upon learning her friends were harmed by them.
Drew Sunheart was famous for his mastery over aura detection. But he didnât like it one bit because usually, an expert in the aura of intent specialized in assassination, detection, or stealth. That was why with his greatsword that complimented his lack of aura in strength, Drew became known as someone who searches for the strong and battles in front as a barbarian.
Martial artists could have the mastery of two specializations; the [ aura ofSTRENGTH ]for coating oneâs body or weapon with aura, and the [ aura ofINTENT ]for detection, stealth, and assassination.
âMaâam... Sire, Iâm sorry for bullying your son and future daugh--- friends.â
âHohohoâ
Drew and Andrea calmly patted Naellâs hair as they laughed warmly.
Drew loudly declared as he grinned childishly.
âNaell, that was a long time ago. And a kidâs feud at that! I remember always fighting your da--- Bharom with silly things. HAHAHA !â
*cough*
Sebastian could only cough at Drewâs response.
The lovey-dovey couple saw the still worried Naell so Drew added on,
âBut if it still worries you, we forgive you.â
Drew was a tall looking guy who had black spiky crew cut hair matching his neatly trimmed beard. His bright brown eyes and wide large smile was either good for kids or terrifying for enemies.
On the other hand, Andrea had wavy melon colored hair; she had warm orange eyes that fit her innocent smile, which either looked warm to kids, but like hell to her enemies.
Andrea added as she proudly puffed her chest with reddened cheeks.
âWe are sorry too... My son, Anrew actually was at fault too. That was why I gave him a good scolding after your duel!â
Both of them knew of their kidsâ feud last summer. They even went to apologize to their good friend, Baron Fharom, which resulted in both of them being scolded since it was not Andrewâs fault in the first place.
They actually blamed themselves with that feud since they thought Naell bullied Andrew and his friends because of them--- them that should have protected his mom.
They could still clearly remember the last time they saw the cheeky cheerful Alicia...
I should probably go with you Acia. Rew can take care of Anrew -
No! Both of you take care of my nephew! Besides, Iâll be back before you know it. And stop shortcutting names already, you blindingly sunny crybaby. Hehehe~ -
The two of them should have gone as Baroness Aliciaâs personal guard.
Alicia actually kept nagging them to go, so she wouldnât be bored with Sebastian who seemed so excited to sightsee historical places. But in the end, they could not go because Andrew at that time was sick. They then heard the news of how their good friend depleted all her mana to freeze an entire explosion.
They could still remember the innocent young Naell, who in the blink of an eye, turned into a vicious kid who hated the nobles for being so powerless, and blamed all the commoners for the terroristsâ act.
âBesides... We are just happy to know youâve... You are okay.â Andrea couldnât finish her sentence without tears clouding her vision. She mostly blamed herself for her best friendâs death.
âIf only I was there.â
She constantly heard those phrases in her thoughts even until then.
She could have prevented her death. Even Fharom didnât blame them, yet she could never move on from that guilt.
That was why when they heard the rumor that after Naellâs beating, he was changing back into a good kid, she could only cry even if she wanted to see Naell and ask for his forgiveness.
âThank you, Sire, Maâam--- and you donât really need to apologize. You have done nothing wrong.â
Andrea immediately hugged Naell while wailing and saying,
âWhy canât Acia be as good as you, young master Nell! She was a bully who kept calling me a crybaby!â
âHoney, stop that, youâre choking Naell!â
Sebastian could only sigh at the scene of a teary eyed Drew removing Andreaâs bear hug from the out of breath Naell.
After some time, they finally managed to calm the wailing Andrea.
Drew and Andrea sat together facing Naell who was seated on the patientsâ bed, whereas Sebastian chose to remain standing.
Drew then got to the point of Naellâs condition.
âNae--- Young master, there are three possibilities as to why you are feeling tired after using too much mana.â
âYou can just call me Naell, Uncle.â
âAhem! ok. HAHAHA !â After clearing his throat with a fake cough, Drew continued speaking with frequent hand gestures.
âFirst, your mana control is terrible that you exceed your limit without the ability to replenish your mana normally. But that case is impossible since Sensei told me your mana control is way better than his. Nay, all high-rank mages.â
Pointing to Sebastian who gave out a hearty---
âHohohoâ
âSecond, it can be because your mana is lacking. But alas, that too is impossible as you are a white mage, the purest one.â
Then it was Andrea who finally said what they thought was wrong with the young mage.
âWe think it is because your body could not handle your mana.â
*sigh*
Sebastian could not help but speak since he was pondering about it for a while.
âI suspected that was the case, but to think Naell and Alicia could be so different.â
âWhat do you mean, Sensei?â Andrea decided to ask while both Drew and Naellâs curious gazes were both with Sebastian.
âWell, Aliciaâs body was so strong she could summon a tsunami and a hurricane to different battlefields while LAUGHING, yet she wouldâve had a hard time maintaining small magic like water droplets because her mana output control was just bad.â
âHAHAHA ! I can imagine her haggard look with those water droplets when you were training her. She often plotted revenge against you, Sensei.â
âHOHOHOâ Sebastian after laughing got serious as he said these words,
âNaellâs mana is--- I think, on par with the dragons.â
.
.
.
Drew, Andrea, and Naell were shocked at the revelation. Dragons were the races that upon birth were already immensely powerful.
Naell was shocked as he thought,
âDragon-like control means dragon-like trouble!â
Andrea was the first to respond, still shocked by the revelation.
âSensei, why do you think so?â
âAt first, I had my doubts but Naellâs control is incredible.â Sebastian then started discussing how Naell learned most things on the first try and how he had broken the crystallized ball before realizing something was wrong.
â...â
Drewâs jaw dropped starting from the first explanation while Andrea got paler.
Naell then got chills upon seeing the three of them looking at him.
âWhat should I do?â
Drew could only stare while Andrea with a smile patted Naellâs hair.
âSorry Nell, even we have no idea how powerful dragon mana is. Remember, white mana is the purest mana, so if your control is like a dragonâs, it means you need the body of a dragon.â
Drew nodded in agreement while Naell got paler and fearful.
âWill I die?â
Before they could even say anything else, Sebastian hit Drew and Andreaâs head with aCHOPand scolded them before turning his gaze to Naell.
âNaell, you should just control your mana and use less than 100%. Iâm sure in time, your body will be able to cope up with your mana.â
âOhhhâ Drew made aâthatâs a good pointâgesture while Andrea was nodding childishly. Sebastian could only sigh and think how on earth these two got their licenses to become a doctor.
Sebastian then added while still concerned with the two adults who looked more troubling than the cheeky looking student of his.
âThat is why starting tomorrow, I will begin teaching you elemental magic, so your body can get used to your mana!â
Naell in return, smiled cheekily and with reddened cheeks, shyly said,
âAbout that Sensei, I felt the sensation of my element when I used the ball... So I more or less could use water and wind now.â
Naell then started using a low input of mana creating a small ball of water in his right hand and a small circular wind at his left.
â...â
The lovey-dovey couple could not hide their shock. Sebastianâs face looked even more troubled than before.
