Coldplay’s Self-Help Pop
Chris Martin, the band’s front man, discusses reading Rumi, making music like an apple tree grows apples, and the band’s new album, “Moon Music.”
An interview by Amanda Petrusich (September 30, 2024)
Tumblr media
On a recent afternoon in Malibu, Chris Martin, the front man of Coldplay, was enjoying a brief pause between tour dates. “We have breaks, but only in the way that Serena Williams has a banana between sets,” he said, pulling his bare feet up under him. Martin, who is forty-seven, was wearing an emerald-green sweater featuring a picture of the earth, affixed with a tiny white button that said “LOVE.” Later on, when he took the sweater off, he revealed a blue T-shirt with the same button. I wondered, but did not ask, how many of them he owned. It felt indicative of Martin’s quintessence at this particular moment: LOVE, layered ad infinitum.
Martin was in the midst of converting an old property into a studio and the de-facto Coldplay HQ. The complex was beset by scrubby clay slopes dotted with sagebrush, California aster, evergreen oaks. Martin likes to send visitors home with unlabelled jars of fresh honey from an apiary nearby. We sat at a picnic table overlooking a meadow. In conversation, Martin is engaging, magnetic. When I apologized for putting my sunglasses on—the light had suddenly shifted—he grinned: “No, I love it. It sort of flips the script. We’ll talk about your album in a minute.” We’d been discussing the gurgling anxiety inherent to any romantic entanglement—the fear of starting to need someone. It’s an idea that arises in “feelslikeimfallinginlove,” the swooning first single from “Moon Music,” the band’s tenth record, which comes out in October. “I know that this could feel like that / But I just can’t stop / Let my defenses drop,” Martin sings in the opening verse.
“There are two methods that humans use to survive,” Martin said. “One is calcification and sequestering and separating: my stuff, my tribe, my this, my that. And then the other half is so open to everything. Those people fall in love a lot more, but they also have a lot more heartbreak.” I guessed that he was in the latter camp. “I’m so open it’s ridiculous,” he said. “But, if you’re not afraid of rejection, it’s the most liberating thing in the world.” Well, sure—but who’s not afraid of rejection? “Of course,” Martin said, laughing. “To tell someone you love them, or to release an album, or to write a book, or to make a cake, or to cook your wife a meal—it’s terrifying. But if I tell this person I love them and they don’t love me back, I still gave them the gift of knowing someone loves them.” Martin noticed a slightly stricken look on my face. “I’m giving this advice to myself, too,” he added. “Don’t think I’ve got it mastered.”
Coldplay, which formed in 1997, in London, has sold more than a hundred million records. (Besides Martin, the band includes the guitarist Jonny Buckland, the bassist Guy Berryman, and the drummer Will Champion.) The ongoing tour for “Music of the Spheres,” the band’s prior release, has sold ten million tickets and made close to a billion dollars, becoming the highest-grossing rock tour of the past forty years. It has broken attendance records in countries including Romania, Singapore, Brazil, Colombia, the Netherlands, Chile, Portugal, Sweden, France, Indonesia, Italy, and Greece. (When I brought this up, Martin was quick to note how colonialism has enabled his success: “We’re only able to play in so many countries because people who spoke English did such terrible things all around the world.”)
“Moon Music” was produced by Max Martin, the Swedish hitmaker behind twenty-seven No. 1 singles. Martin described Max Martin’s technique as “a mix of mathematics and fluidity, of real structure and being totally open,” adding, with a kind of proud certainty, “He’s our producer now.” Martin also confirmed that Coldplay will make two more albums and then stop recording, though the band will continue to tour. “Yesterday, I went to see the L.A. Philharmonic. All those songs were released two hundred years ago,” he said. “It still felt extremely vibrant. So perhaps there’s a point where new material is not essential to make an amazing show.”
Martin, like many successful songwriters, explains the work as a kind of divine channelling: a song appears and he receives it. “If you’re lucky enough to have the space to let the music talk to you, and through you, then you can relax a bit,” he told me. “I’m just sort of doing what I’m told, the way an apple tree grows apples.” He said that establishing the Coldplay catalogue as finite has been liberating for the band: “By knowing there’s an end point, nobody is phoning it in. We only have two more chances. And most of the songs already exist, in a skeletal form.” I asked if that last day in the studio might be sad for him—a final take, the feeling of knowing that something is over. I find ending things so excruciating, I told him, I’d often rather just go down with the ship. He gave me a sympathetic look. “I think it will feel amazing,” he said.
At some point, Coldplay became—how else do I say it?—motivational. In recent years, it has felt less like a band than like an engine of unrelenting positivity, a high-grade confetti cannon straight to the face. The shift started around 2014, with the release of “Ghost Stories,” which contained little rancor or moodiness, fewer nods to Echo and the Bunnymen, less audible guitar. Coldplay, once skewered by critics for being too plaintive and self-pitying, was now broadcasting the opposite message: everything is magic. It reminded me, in some circuitous way, of “Attitude,” the punk band Bad Brains’ one-minute opus from 1982, in which the vocalist H.R. barks, “Hey, we got that P.M.A.!”—a reference to “positive mental attitude,” a phrase coined in 1937 by the author and probable con man Napoleon Hill. He was peddling a notion that we today refer to as manifestation: “Anything the human mind can believe, the human mind can achieve.” But Bad Brains still had fury, bite, edge. For whatever reason, Coldplay had willfully neutralized itself.
In Malibu, when I needled Martin about that change—what happened, exactly, to the yearning and discord of “Parachutes” or “A Rush of Blood to the Head,” the band’s first two releases?—he attributed it both to a burgeoning interest in Rumi, the thirteenth-century Sufi mystic, and to his experience working with the visionary electronic musician Brian Eno, who produced “Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends,” Coldplay’s fourth album. Martin said that Eno’s purity and sense of wonder had helped him “completely abandon the concept of trying to be cool. He came in with the enthusiasm of a nine-year-old for everything.” Mostly, though, Martin sees the change as incremental, organic. “It’s not like it was black-and-white, and then became color,” he said. “The first song on the first album is called ‘Don’t Panic.’ There’s also a song called ‘Everything’s Not Lost,’ which is exactly the same message that we’re singing now. Just sung by a slightly less experienced, more insecure, younger person.”
Though he likely wouldn’t frame it this way, Martin appears motivated by a kind of vocational mandate. He occupies a rarefied position, insofar as it’s actually possible for him to make the world a little less fractured, for a couple of hours, seventy-five thousand people at a time. This requires obliterating his ego, and accepting that a lot of people will find what he’s doing—bouncing around a stage covered with rainbows, singing lines such as “In the end it’s just love,” as he does on “One World,” which closes “Moon Music”—unbearably corny. In a way, the messaging has to be flat to translate so widely. On “Clocks,” a lush and tumbling track from “A Rush of Blood to the Head,” Martin sings about grappling with his own fallibility and bafflement, of trying his best to be of service in the world: “Am I part of the cure, or am I part of the disease?” His voice swoons, flutters, dissipates. “You are,” he answers. It’s a strange lyric, but I’ve always appreciated its strangeness: cure, disease, good, bad, hurtful, benevolent. You are.
These days, Martin describes the band’s message as “No one is more or less special than anyone else.” He went on, “The reason I’m able to say that is because we’re one of the few groups of people who get to actually see it. We travel everywhere. What Ryszard Kapuściński would call ‘the Other’ is not real.” I asked him what it felt like to stand onstage in, say, Kuala Lumpur, or Helsinki, or Tokyo, and hear the crowd bellowing his lyrics back to him, to one another, to themselves, to the air. “It feels like the answer,” he said. “It feels like: This is where humans actually work. It has nothing to do with us as a band. There are points where, hopefully, nothing exists except ‘We’re all just singing this together.’ ”
Ultimately, Martin hopes that by providing solace, and a place to unify, Coldplay can actualize some change in the world. I thought this sounded idealistic, even quixotic, until I considered all the ways in which I had been made better by songs. “If you’re able to live as yourself and understand who you are, whatever that might mean in terms of your gender or sexuality or what you like to eat or where you like to live or whether you like table tennis or riding donkeys . . . if you’re allowed to be yourself, would the world be as aggressive as it is?” Martin asked. “My feeling is no, I don’t think it would. I think much of the violence and conflict comes from repression, suppression, unreleased damage.”
Eventually, the air started to cool. Martin brought me a sweatshirt. Our conversation wound toward more existential matters: people we’d lost, what it meant, what it didn’t mean. “Death is in our songs a lot,” Martin said. “Maybe as a way of encouraging living. And also faith—the idea that, well, it’s O.K. It’s all O.K., isn’t it? I’m sure that’s crossed your mind.” The sun was beginning to ease into the Pacific. We sat for a moment in the hazy yellow pre-dusk. The air was parched, salty, soft. “Everything is perfect, of course,” Martin said. “Everything’s as it’s supposed to be.”

Ricardo Paulo Chibanga (November 8, 1942 - April 16, 2019) is recognized as the world’s first documented African bullfighter. He was born in Lourenço Marques, Mozambique where his father operated a pastry shop to support his family of seven children. At nine years old, he became enthralled with the sport of bullfighting and would visit the bullring near his home. He started disseminating bullfighting posters and advertisements to African tourists at the train station to lure them to the fights.
He was invited to Lisbon, Portugal for a bullfighting festival. He witnessed Manuel dos Santos and Diamantino Viseu perform bullfights on the same day. He stayed in Portugal. The renowned bull breeder, Joao de Silva, hired him to work as a vaquero. He learned how to observe and understand the behavior of bulls which would help him as a matador.
He began his bullfighting career when Manuel dos Santos introduced him to Armando Soarez, another bullfighter, who added him to his entourage. He and the other performers assisted Soarez in wounding the bull, while Soarez, the lead performer, executed the animal. He performed in more than 70 bullfights.
On August 15, 1971, he made his debut as a matador in Seville, Spain at the Maestranza bullring. He became the 17th Portuguese bullfighter and the first of African descent to perform professionally in the sport. He became recognized for dancing in his colorful costume to confuse the bull and leap forward to plant the banderillas into the bull’s shoulder blades.
He achieved international acclaim. He toured bullfighting arenas around the world including Spain, Southern France, Mexico, Venezuela, the US, Canada, Indonesia, and several countries in Africa. He entered the business side of the bullfighting industry where he owned and managed a portable bullfighting ring in Golegã, Portugal. In 2001, prominent Portuguese bullfighters dedicated a bronze bust of Chibanga to the city of Golegã in his memory. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

fragments from l’amour triomphe de tour: 𝑏𝑖𝑟𝑡ℎ𝑑𝑎𝑦’𝑠 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔. / 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈: Nyra Khione Tjandra, Felicia Evelyn Widjaja, Frans Antonius Widjaja, Raymond Brian Liu. / Jakarta, Indonesia. / September 24, 2024.
. . .
Coming to a crowded place has never been my forte, especially when it was something out of my duty as a musician. I barely found ease to stick in between so many people, it often makes me feel lost instead. Is that a weird thing...? I guess so (because anyone I told this feeling about always went skeptical and I don’t know why). But today was different. Felicia’s brother, Frans, which also happen to be a good friend of mine, is on his birthday. He threw a private party on the Widjaja’s residence and I was one of the invited guests to come. As a bestfriend of her sister, I felt like to be present is a must. Regardless of whatever tendencies I had, I still have to push them all away and coming. And guess what? Here I am.
My eyes were gazing around as I walk myself slowly, searching for the figure of my friend in between the people here. I would say that Frans is quite an easy going person, seeing at how the so called ‘private party’ ain’t looking private at all. Please, put no blame in me, but it seemed more like an open public space where everyone could just come and have fun—for there are lots of people around. I won’t count, if that’s what you’re about to ask me to do, but I can say that the amount of people coming on this party explains a lot about how Frans are typically the friendly and the extroverted one. I even found myself a bit struggling on looking for Felicia until a tap landed on my right shoulder, followed by a familiar voice.
“Nyra!” Shouted by a female’s voice, and I turned myself around to find Felicia standing with a drink held on her left hand. Upon finding what I’ve been looking for, I flashed a curve on my lips and replied, “Fel. I’ve been looking for you.”
“I could tell, yes. Lo kayak anak ilang daritadi.”
“Oh, jadi sebenernya daritadi merhatiin?”
“Iya, gue sama Koko tadi. Sini dulu datengin dia, lo dicariin mulu dari tadi.”
And right after that, Felicia pulled me further, directing myself to a certain point on this party—which I obviously knew that we were headed for Frans. I found him surrounded by a couple of friends. Men, to be exact.
“Koko, nih yang Koko cari dateng.”
“Hey, pretty princess!” Frans greeted me rather in a playful tone—something he often does whenever he happened to meet me.
He stood, without any further doubt scooping me into his embrace. I know for a fact that it’s a friendly gesture, like a brother welcoming his sister. I’ve been friends with Felicia since years, since we were on elementary school. People used to say that I was just another unbiological sister to Frans. Without anyone be talking about that, he’s really treating me as one. He’s always been like that, and that’s why I found it no strange at all. Instead, a giggle slipped out of my lips as I lingered one of my hand around him.
“Happy birthday, Koko,” I uttered while my hand planting repeated pats upon his back. He pulled himself away, making a further gap between us as he stared at me. A smile carved upon my mien as I lifted the gift wrapped in a little paper bag on my left hand. “Hope it’ll be useful.”
“Yailah, segala repot-repot gini.”
“Oh, gak mau? Ya ud—”
“Eeeh! Kata siapa? Makasih kali. Meski repot juga bakal tetep gua terima, kok.”
Frans pulled back the gift to his hand, leaving me to let out a small giggle for his weird tease. I heard Felicia’s laughter in the back as well—something that kept ease on me, because I know some people are staring toward us. Or at least, especially, Frans’ friends around.
“Makasih, Nini. I’ll definitely love it. Fel, ajak Nyra makan gih.”
“Iya, iya. Ya udah, Ny, yuk? Koko-koko, aku ajak temenku makan dulu, ya.”
I walked alongside Felicia going to the other side of the party, but just after few steps had been taken, I heard Frans’ voice calling out my name. I knew it was him, because it sounded close. Regardless of the music and the bustle of crowds around, I could still hear him clearly. When I turned myself to face him, he was standing with arms rested upon his friend’s shoulders—which I cannot help but to stare not only at Frans, but to his friend as well. They looked at me, and Frans immediately responded, “Nevermind, just callin’ out. Makan yang banyak ya,” followed by a giggle.
Oh, I noticed how the stare of his friend looked so intense—not in a weird and scary way. It felt deep, somehow. It felt like he did not only stare, but further: he seemed like observing. Was he observing the party? Perhaps...

¡Vayan por todo el mundo!
Tumblr media
about:blank
about:blank

NIKI RELEASES NEW ALBUM 'BUZZ' & SHARES TITLE TRACK MV
Rosa Gulliver of TINYGMUSIC | 9th August 2024
Tumblr media
Jakarta-born, LA-based singer-songwriter and producer NIKI firmly plants herself as one of the most dynamic artists of today with the release of her new album Buzz via 88rising, out now. Accompanying the release is the music video for title track “Buzz,” directed by Isaac Ravishankara. The video, a cheeky line-by-line depiction of the lyrics, encapsulates the rush of raw emotion and bittersweet nerves of a budding romance – glimpses of buzzing bees, a crackling guitar amp, and longing looks between two people, all signaling towards the start of something new. NIKI was initially inspired to name the record after the budding growth she observed in her garden every spring. Across thirteen tracks on the album, the singer encapsulates the feeling of being on the precipice of something undiscovered.

The album’s release joins previous singles; the love struck summer track, “Tsunami,” astrologically-inspired song “Blue Moon,” and flirty lead single “Too Much of a Good Thing.” NIKI plans to celebrate Buzz with a comprehensive world tour, produced by Live Nation, kicking off this fall. What eventually became Buzz, the third studio album by singer-songwriter and globally-renowned star NIKI, started with an urgent quake from the innermost core of her being. What surfaced in its wake was a collection of warm, stirring folk-rock songs, which crackle and flare like a bonfire between close confidantes. “I went through an identity crisis,” says the 25-year-old of Buzz. “It took a lot of trial and error, and I just stumbled upon pieces of myself along the way. I named it Buzz because it feels like I'm on the precipice of something about to happen.”

For NIKI, things have been happening progressively since she was a high schooler in Jakarta, Indonesia. As a student at an international academy, she cut her teeth scribbling lovesick poems in English class and performed acoustic guitar covers of American pop songs on YouTube. With a six-string in hand, and her family and classmates cheering her on from the audience, Nicole Zefanya then staked her claim to global stardom as NIKI.

And claim it she has - with over three billion streams worldwide, sold out shows on multiple continents, massive sets at festivals across the globe, front row seats at Paris Fashion Week, four songs on a Marvel film’s soundtrack, and some of the most phenomenal, confessional songs being released in 2024, NIKI has already established a veteran’s resume before the age of 25.
Tumblr media
NIKI - Photo Credit: Annie Lai
On Buzz, her songwriting remains as intimate as ever. In her initial sketches of songs for Buzz, NIKI took cues from other lane-paving women with confessional, honest lyricism soundtracked by guitars.  “Joni Mitchell is my songwriting north star,” she says — and uncompromising feminist luminaries like Stevie Nicks, Carly Simon and Liz Phair. To match the wandering spirit of Buzz, NIKI cultivated her own elastic approach to guitar.

To further harness this creative and personal sea change, NIKI began enlisting producers who had worked with her favourite contemporary singer-songwriters. She tapped Tyler Chester, who’d captured tracks with Madison Cunningham and Sara Bareilles; she also recruited Ethan Gruska, who counts Fiona Apple and Phoebe Bridgers as collaborators.
Buzz reverberates with the hard-earned wisdom of a young woman who charges dauntlessly towards her dreams — but can still spare a laugh if she stumbles.
About NIKI
NIKI born Nicole Zefanya on January 24 1999, is an Indonesian singer-songwriter. She is currently based in the United States and signed with the record label 88rising. She released her first full-length studio album, Moonchild, in 2020. It was followed by Nicole (2022) and recently Buzz (2024). Her debut headlining concert tour, Nicole World Tour (2022–2023), visited over 40 cities across North America, Asia, Australia, and Europe.
NIKI has garnered global recognition for her songwriting and musicianship and is among the most popular female artists from Indonesia. In 2020, NIKI was listed among Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia.
