Father’s Day Double Drabble
(Warning: bittersweet)
It wasn’t my fault, okay? I couldn’t have known. We were spot-checking all over the timeline, and all of the Avengers were volunteering for random things. Everyone was careful to not cross their own timeline to avoid any “OMG, it’s my evil twin” scenarios, but the temporospatial coordinates for this mission were not going to be a problem for this one. It was 1917 and not in the US. He double-checked to confirm the rules and safeguards for interacting with locals. I sent him and his team through. No problems.
Later, Sergeant Barnes stopped by and asked me where Steve was. Usually, if he’s in the compound he’s either in the gym or the offices, and Barnes must have expected me to say one of those, because he did a double-take when I told him about the mission. His face went sort of still before he nodded and thanked me and walked away. I maintain that that still wasn’t a red flag. Maybe he had something he wanted to talk with Cap about and was upset that he wasn’t around. Things happen.
Teams started reporting in about then—the usual reports of “all clear,” no lasting effects of whatever removing the Time Stone from the timeline seemed to have done. I logged it all and relayed key points to check out. Around the room from me, I could see and hear my colleagues doing the same. Sometimes I feel like we’re just a fancy call center—text center? You can send messages through time and space, but not voice, yet. Stark swears he’s working on it. Anyway, everything seemed to be going fine.
Then Cap’s team started reporting that they’d lost track of Cap.
That happens, sometimes—someone on a team gets pulled into a conversation with locals and has to blend in, loses touch with their squad, misses a check-in. It’s not normally an issue. But people kept reporting it, until all four other people on the squad said they’d missed him for a period of more than an hour, their time. I started to get worried, because . . . . Well. It was supposed to be a quiet day, but we’d still sent them back in time to a war zone. I was still fielding other teams’ issues, too, though, and Googling period slang for someone to find out whether they’d been propositioned or not kind of took precedence for a while. Then I heard an “ahem” and Nick Fury was standing in front of my desk. Just standing. Staring. Looking not very happy.
I might be a desk agent, but I am a SHIELD agent. I did not squeak or crap my pants. I asked if I could help him. He asked how long Cap had been missing now, local time. I checked. There had been updates. It was something like three hours, and he’d spent most of that talking with some private who’d apparently mistaken him for his wife’s cousin or something.
Didn’t seem that bad to me, but Fury grabbed my laptop (hey!), asked a few more questions that I didn’t see the answers to, and authorized the team there to “haul his ass back, bodily if need be.” Then he asked what godforsaken idiot authorized Cap going back to this place and time.
I took that a little bit personally. I had, but it wasn’t like it was going to make any difference! It wasn’t like he’d even been born yet!
“Yeah,” Barnes said from behind me (scary ninja assassin! Gah!). He wasn’t looking at me or Fury, though. He was looking at the gate. “That’s kind of the point.”
Before I could ask what the hell, the gate flashed and Rogers and the team stumbled through it. Fury started yelling, but Cap ignored him. Just ignored him. He looked around and I realized his eyes were red. He saw Barnes and stumbled straight to him. Barnes caught and hugged him. It was like seeing people meeting up again after the Blip. Cap’s face was smashed into Barnes’ shoulder--I’m pretty sure he was crying--and Barnes kept patting his back and going “shh, shh, it’s okay.”
“No, it is not okay,” Fury barked, stomping over to them. “Exactly how much did you tell him, Rogers?”
Oh shit. One of those questions I’d missed must have been about what they were talking about, then. But why?
Rogers stepped back, looked up, and wiped his face. Yeah, he’d definitely been crying. “Enough for me,” he said, his voice thick and a little defiant. “Not enough to change the timeline. The minute we left he’d have forgotten everything.” He looked pointedly at me. “I checked.”
I hoped that my goldfish impression would tell Fury that, while I confirmed how much information leakage would be repaired without jeopardizing the timeline, I hadn’t known anything about what Rogers had had planned and still didn’t actually know whatever the hell he’d done, and please don’t kill me. I also checked my readouts. “Confirmed, no damage, sir,” I said as crisply as I could manage. “Whatever he did had no lasting effects.”
Fury stared at Rogers with his arms crossed. Rogers stared right back.
“You got lucky this time,” Fury said grimly. “Don’t try it again.”
Rogers shook his head. “I won’t. I got what I needed.”
Fury glared a bit longer, then nodded. “Good.”
“What happened?” I burst out as he turned to walk away. “This wasn’t a red flag! It was World War I, not II—he shouldn’t have known anyone there to talk to!”
“Yeah,” Cap said quietly, as Fury and Barnes gave me “you dummy” looks, which, not fair. “I never met him. That’s why I had to.”
“You got what you needed?” Barnes murmured, putting an arm around him again.
“Yeah.” Rogers leaned against him, ignoring the stares from me and his team. “I told him he’d forget. I told him about all this, about me. He—he said he was proud of me.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’ve had this idea in a nebulous form for years, and it settled in to stay when Endgame gave us an actual means of time travel that Steve actually uses. I was going to finally figure out an appropriate length, decide whether or not to include anything from when Steve goes back, whose POV(s) to use, etc., but I keep getting hung up on the details, so you get a not-fully-contextualized double-drabble instead.
I still don’t have a good excuse for why everyone’s bopping around in time, nor a clear idea when this is, because it’s clearly not post-Endgame because Tony’s still alive. DETAILS.
#my writing#Father's Day#fanfic#Steve Rogers#Joseph Rogers#Tony got a bonding moment with Howard but Steve never met his dad and I feel like he'd want to#time travel#Captain America#eventually may write it from Joe's POV but that's just too sad
We Have A Jedi [19] | Peter Parker x Male Reader
Fandom: Star Wars, Marvel Pairing: Peter Parker x Male Reader, Tony Stark x Son Reader Summary: Civil War has passed and the avengers are divided. (M/N) has been going to school and homecoming is coming up.
Previous | Next Read From The Beginning … “So Ned, what IS homecoming exactly?”
Ned looked up at (M/N) like he had just asked a crazy question. “What is? What!? How do you not know what homecoming is?” (M/N) shrugged. “I didn’t have homecoming where I came from. What is it? It must be big for something for how you reacted.” Recently (M/N) had noticed the many posters decorating the walls, all announcing Homecoming. Students all around him were also talking about it, but he wasn’t sure what it was.
“Well, it’s a major dance. Not as big as Prom but it’s still big. Normally people ask to go with someone that’s important to them.” (M/N) listened to Ned talk about Homecoming but got a smile as Ned talked about asking someone important. “So, Should I ask Peter then?” At that Ned choked on his drink. “What? Did I say something wrong?” Ned cleared his throat while shaking his head furiously. “No. No. You’re good. I mean people usually ask someone that’s important to them and who they like. Ya know?” (M/N) nodded in understanding. “So I should ask Peter then?” Ned continued to stare at him. “Wait? You like Peter? Oh that’s so great! You’d make the perfect couple. You should ask him!”
Honestly (M/N) hadn’t even thought about it, but it made sense. Ever since he had first met Peter he had grown attached to him. Ever since leaving the jedi and being around Peter more, that bond only grew stronger. While the jedi were against attachments, he was no longer part of the order. He could have a future with Peter...if both of them wanted it.
“I should?”
“Yes! I have a feeling he might feel the same.” That made (M/N) smirk.
Speaking of Peter, the boy of the hour arrived just then. (M/N) decided not to ask him just yet, seeing as it’s probably a big deal to do so. “Hey guys!” he sat down and (M/N) smiled at him. “Hey Peter, how was the decathlon trip? I heard Spiderman made an appearance.” (M/N) said smirking at Peter. He had heard all about the mess Peter had gotten himself into at the washington monument and made sure Peter knew it too. The boy in question blushed and picked at his food. “It was fine...I ended up fighting someone. Part of the group dealing the weapons.” At that (M/N) got interested, Ned who was listening went wide eyed and looked at the other two boys. “Wait! Wait he knows?” He whispered and shouted at the two. Peter and (M/N) nodded at the gobsmacked boy. “Yeah, he found out a long time ago.” (M/N) nodded and wrapped his arm around Peter. “Yep. And I’ve been helping him look for whoever these people are.”
Before anything else can happen the bell rang, signaling the end of the day. “Well won’t you look at that, saved by the bell.” The three boys gathered their things and left the school. “Sorry guys, I have to go. I have-things to do.” Ned really REALLY tried with that excuse. He gave a wink at (M/N) and ran off to the bus. “That was weird. Never seen him leave so fast, especially after all that.” Peter said, causing (M/N) to laugh. “Yeah...I have a feeling he’s gonna find out about me being force sensitive soon...that or being the son of you know who.” Peter nodded.
A car honked and they saw Happy waiting for the Stark boy. “I have to go. You coming over later?” He asked the other boy. “Nah. I have something I have to do. See you later (M/N).” With that Peter went off to the bus and (M/N) really debated going after him to ask him to homecoming. He decided no again, maybe his dad could help him figure out a way to ask.
He opened the passenger door and sat inside. “Hey Happs. Is dad back from his trip yet?” The man smirked and nodded. “Yep, got in literally right after you got to school. He’s waiting for you at home.” (M/N) couldn’t help the smile that appeared on his face, he had missed his dad when he was away. “Do you think getting away helped?” After everything that happened during the civil war, Tony really began thinking over things more clearly and everyone leaving really began affecting him. (M/N) and Happy could see it, so could Rhodey and Pepper. The man’s smirk didn’t fade, that was a good sign. “I think so. He seemed to be doing better.” (M/N) would see when he got home.
The drive had gone by rather quietly after that. Neither needing to say anything. Returning to the compound (M/N) quickly threw his bag into his room. Bweep bwoop! The boy turned to his friend. “Hey T3. My dad in the lab?” Bwoop Bweep. “Thanks buddy. I’m going to go say hi.” He made his way to the lab and heard the music blaring, a good sign of his dad being there. Entering the lab and saw his dad working on something at his work table. He smiled as he saw his son walk in. “Well look who’s home! How was school buddy?” (M/N) quickly gave his dad a long hug. “It was school. Now how are you? Was the trip good? I missed you.”
Tony laughed and pulled back to look at this son. “Trip was good, glad to be back though I miss you too. So how’s our spider boy? I had to save his ass during my trip.” Tony tried saying that like he was annoyed but the small smile about to break said otherwise. “I heard about that. Anyways...I was going to ask you something actually.” Tony looked at his son curiously before moving back to what he was working on. “Oh and what is that my young ‘padawan’?”
(M/N) shook a bit, he hated when his dad called him that. Even with that nickname, he was glad to see his father somewhat returned to normal, he had been a bit of a wreck with Steve leaving. You know, the fallout of a lover’s spat. “I told you never to call me that. Anyways...so homecomings coming up and I wasn’t sure what that was so Ned told me about it. Apparently people ask who they like to this thing and-” Before he was able to finish Tony interrupted him. “And you want to ask someone you like to the dance? Oh my god my baby boy finally has his first crush. Who is it? is she pretty?”
(M/N) shook his head. “Actually I was thinking of asking Peter.” That was all he said, he figured that was all he had to say. Tony seemed a bit surprised but smiled and nodded. “Good. He’s a good boy. I didn’t know you swung that way kiddo.” (M/N) was confused by that, he hadn’t heard that before. “What do you mean? Swing what way?”
“Oh you know...that you like guys.”
“I mean...in the Jedi we weren’t supposed to like anyone other than platonically. Even then we couldn’t really have any sort of attachment. Is...liking someone of the same sex wrong here?”
Tony hesitated a bit but nodded. “A bit. It’s getting better, but there’s still lots of problems. Just know that I’m Bi myself and still love and support you no matter what.” Tony made sure to say that. He never told Howard since he knew it wouldn’t go over well and didn’t want his son to feel the same.
“Huh. That’s so strange.” Seeing how his dad looked confused by that statement he continued. “Well, I’ve travelled the galaxy and it’s a large place. There’s no set binary limit to sexuality or gender really, it’s a spectrum...a rather large spectrum. I haven’t really encountered any planets where this has been a problem.”
Tony let out an oh and nodded in understanding. “I get it. Isn’t that nice. It’s nice to know that the rest of the galaxy seems to have it’s shit together and not stuck in the past like us. Anyways, yes I approve of you asking Peter out and I’m guessing you need pointers from your old man to help ask him out?” (M/N) nodded. “Not to worry, I’ve asked out a couple guys in the past. I can help you.”
(M/N) wanted to make a comment about how he should have done that to Steve but resisted seeing as it wasn’t the best time for it. “Hit me with what you got old man.” He laughed at the face Tony made. Tony was about to start his lesson on how to get Peter when Friday spoke up. “Sorry to interrupt sir but you might want to see this.” At that moment a video of a ferry being cut in half was shown. “Spiderman has been sighted on the ferry sir.”
“Shit.” Both of them said in unison. Tony quickly got up and got to his suit. “Friday deploy my drones to help keep that thing floating. (M/N) sorry to cut this short but I have to go save your boyfriend. Stay here and think of ways to ask him out...if I don’t tell him first.” He immediately left after saying that. “Dad!” But he was already gone. With that he went back to his room to watch whatever came next with T3.
…
So…(M/N) was a nervous wreck. He had figured out a way to ask Peter to homecoming. FINALLY! He was nervous one, because he was asking him out and two, his dad took away Peter’s suit. He was really nervous that Peter would hate him. Who was he kidding, it was Peter. Peter, the boy he met when he came to earth, Peter who easily let him into his life and was curious about his own. Peter the boy who had stolen his heart. Peter wouldn’t hate him.
“(M/N)! Hey (M/N) wait up!” Ned. (M/N) watch as the boy ran up to him. “So! Did you do it? Did you ask peter to homecoming?” The young Stark shook his head. “No. Not yet at least. I wanted to do something special to ask him so…” He pulled out a necklace with crystal on it. “I was going to give him this and ask him. This necklace is special to me and figured it would mean a lot to him.” Ned’s eyes widened and he smiled. “(M/N) that’s perfect! Also I think that necklace is so cool. Is that a real crystal? Where’d you get-” “Guys!” Peter came running over and (M/N) quickly hid the crystal. “Oh Peter! I’m glad to see you. I wanted to ask you a question.” Before he continued on Peter stopped him. “Okay but real fast you’ll never guess what happened. I’m going to homecoming with Liz!” It was like everything just stopped. Ned got really excited but then suddenly looked at (M/N). Ever the friend (M/N) had a smile on his face. “That’s great Peter. I’m glad to hear it.”
“Oh! What’d you want to ask me (M/N)?”
“It’s nothing. I forgot about it anyways.”
“Oh...okay. Well-”
“Sorry, I have to go. Emergency came up.” (M/N) didn’t wait for anyone to respond. He turned and walked out of the school. He didn’t ask Happy or Tony to come for him, he just...walked. He didn’t know why he was feeling the way he was. He had spent his entire life not caring about romance or petty crushes but for some reason, Peter Parker was breaking his heart.
He found himself standing in the penthouse of Stark tower looking over the city. He wasn’t sure what brought him there but it’s where he found himself. He got so lost in his thoughts he hadn’t noticed the sun getting lower, not until his dad’s voice reached his ears. “You okay bud? You skipped some classes today and are now here...I’m guessing asking didn’t work out?”
(M/N) shook his head, not tearing his eyes away from the city's skyline. “I’m not going.” Tony came and sat down next to him. “That’s okay kid. You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do. Besides, there’s always Prom.” Tony seemed to be thinking of something. “Say, since you’re not doing homecoming would you mind helping Happy move this stuff to the compound? We’re kind of...selling the tower.” (M/N) had known about it from rumors but wasn’t sure. He was going to miss this place. He nodded. “Yeah I can do that.” Tony wrapped his arm around him and brought him closer. “That’s my boy.”
The two stayed like that until the sun went down.
…
“No that one goes over there!” (M/N) watched as Happy shouted out to the movers where everything went. The move from the tower to the compound was coming to an end and it wouldn’t be long before the plane was in the air. It wasn’t long before Happy had received a phone call, (M/N) couldn’t tell who it was from here but Happy didn’t seem pleased. It wasn’t long before the man finished the call and continued on. “Who was that?”
Happy didn’t even look away. “Peter. No no that goes there!”
(M/N) was curious as to why Peter was calling Happy. “What was he calling for? Is he in trouble?”
“I don’t know. He said something about someone coming after the plane.” That DID catch his attention. More than likely it was whoever was selling the weapons. “Perhaps we should listen to him. Or at least ramp up security and protect the shipment you know?”
Happy stopped and put a hand on his shoulder. “Hey relax kid. It’s gonna be okay, we've made sure to take safety precautions.” (M/N) loved Happy, but he knew it wouldn’t be enough. “I think I should go with it. It’s just heading back to the compound anyways. I’ll be another defense.” Happy wanted to fight back but (M/N) was already heading to the plane. “Don’t worry I’ll be fine.”
It wasn’t long before the last of everything was packed and the plane took off, with an added passenger. Looking through the boxes, (M/N) found himself some weapons to help him in case it was needed. He’d remember to thank Natasha for daggers later. Sitting down he began to meditate, if anything went wrong he’d know about it. As if on queue, he felt that disturbance.
Standing up he following his instinct and saw a man. “Hot dog.” The man began walking to the box that held the arc reactors. “I’m sorry.” The man turned to him. “That doesn’t belong to you and you’re in a restricted area. Stand down.”
“And who are you? Another Stark bodyguard?”
“One last time. Stand down.”
The man let out a laugh but that was soon cut off as an alarm went off and a camera feed popped up showing Peter on the plane in his old suit. The man let out a scream of anger and (M/N) took the opportunity using the force to push him against the wall. He hoped it would knock him out but the man quickly got up. “Always the freaks.” The man jumped out of the hole he had arrived and and (M/N) watched the screen as the man, the vulture, went after Peter. “Not good.”
(M/N) felt as the vultures' wings pierced the plane. It was going to go down, no matter what. (M/N) quickly put on his dad’s older helmet and gauntlets. If the ship was going down he wasn’t going down with it. The alarms were blaring louder and (M/N) could feel through the force it wouldn’t be long before the ship went down.
With another pierce the plane began ripping apart and (M/N) was quickly sucked out. “SHIT! SHIT! SHIT!” He felt as the air rushed past him and it took him a second to focus. He saw as the plane, vulture and Peter all fell closer to the ground. He had to quickly figure out how to use his dad’s tech if he didn’t want to hit the ground hard. Luckily, his dad’s early tech wasn’t THAT difficult to figure out to him and he was soon flying. “Oh man...that was close.” He watched as the plane hit the ground on a beach and broke apart. “Peter!”
(M/N) flew down to the beach and saw Peter laying on the ground. “Peter! Oh god wake up!” He shook the boy who quickly woke up. “Woah! What happened? (M/N)? What are you doing? What are you wearing?” He helped him to his feet and just as quickly as he got him up, both boys were knocked down by Vulture.
“Hey Pedro.” The man launched at them and Peter dogged out of the way but (M/N) didn’t. Instead he lifted his arms and used the force to push the man back. Using the force he gripped the man and began pulling his wings apart, making sure to separate him from his weapon. The man was able to flap his wings once more and it sent (M/N) flying backwards.
The man’s wings began sparking and he tried to grab a crate to escape. Peter quickly webbed him. “Time to go home Pete!” The man tried escaping but Peter held his grip. “I’m trying to save you!” And just like that the wings gave up and the man went flying back into an explosion. Peter quickly followed after him. (M/N) watched as Peter came back carrying him. “(M/N)! Help me web him up. He’s going to prison.” (M/N) quickly helped Peter tie up the man and crates before skidadling before the authorities arrived. They did make sure to leave a note though.
From atop the rollercoaster Peter and (M/N) watched as Happy and the rest of the security crew came to the scene. “Well...is THIS what homecoming is like every year?” (M/N) looked and Peter and the boy laughed. “No. No, it’s never...THIS.” He motioned to the wreck with his hands. (M/N) let out his own laugh. “I’m glad you’re okay Pete. I told dad he should have given your suit back.” Peter only shook his head. “It’s not your fault (M/N), or Mr.Stark’s. But I couldn’t just stand by and LOOK we caught him! They’ll get the others for sure.”
(M/N) smiled as he looked at Peter who seemed content. Peter moved his head and their eyes connected. In that moment it was like the whole galaxy froze and it was just the two of them. (M/N) felt as if a spark happened between them and he wasn’t sure what caused it but the next thing he knew he was moving and pressed his lips to Peters. Peter seemed surprised at first but didn’t push away, in fact, he pushed deeper into it.
It wasn’t long before (M/N) pulled back but pressed his forehead against Peter’s. “That was nice.” He said. Peter was smiling so wide. “I’ve been wanting to do that for so long.” He said. “You remember that question I was going to ask a couple days ago?” (M/N) asked to the boy who nodded. He pulled out the necklace that he was wearing. “I was going to give this to you. Then I was going to ask you to homecoming. So now I ask…” He handed him the necklace. “Peter, will you go out with me?” (M/N) could have sworn he saw tears build in Peter’s eyes. “Yes. (M/N) I’d love to!” The two kissed again.
…
“So what exactly am I doing here and is that a droid?”
(M/N) led Peter through the compound. Happy following behind them with T3. “You’ll see and yes that’s T3. You’ll meet later.” Bwoop! Soon the four met up with Tony. “Ah there’s my favorite teens! Come on let’s go.” Tony led them down the hall further. “So Pete we’re going to have a father-son’s boyfriend talk a bit later alright. But for now we’re here for this.”
Tony waved his hand and a cabinet opened showing a new and improved Spiderman suit. “You said you wanted to be an avenger. Now you are.” (M/N) smiled at Peter but that was because he knew what his boyfriend was going to do. And just like that, Peter remained the friendly neighborhood Spiderman.
That still didn’t get him out of that father-son’s boyfriend talk.
…
“The time has come. My plan has been set in motion and my forces are on the move.”
“At last. I’ve grown tired of waiting.”
“You’ll have to wait a bit longer, I have another mission for you. Find him...and bring me his head.”
“Yes...my master.”
...
A/N: Tick. Tick. Tick. Time is ticking down until infinity war and endgame and it’s going to be INSANE! I hope you’re excited!
god marvel did us dirty by having 2 of the people tony could best get along with on the opposing side of the civil war so that they never had any oppertunity to develop what could have been super good friendships and instead just became Immediate Enimies without even really having exchanged more than a scentence or so first
like bucky and tony? would have been fuckin GREAT together. same ‘i am a shit’ sense of humour, Much Mischief bois, used to steve’s patent brand of bullshittery, and very sarcastic. bucky’s a big believer in sticking together and credit where credit is due and accepting help, and is interested in tech. tony kind of has the tech thing, you know, covered - i wanna see tony explaining improvements or ideas for buckys arm and bucky actually following along.
i also wanna see tony stick fridge magnets to that arm and bucky follow up by putting pudding in tony’s pillowcase, or hello kitty magnet’s on the suit’s ass. c’mon giys think of the prank wars.
bucky moving things around in the lab and driving tony fucking bonkers.
discussing hair care
constant comments about how hot the other one is because they are both Massive Flirts and oh god stop. stop guys please.
bucky: you cant stop love sam
sam: bucky no
tony: bucky yes
sam: tony no
bucky: tony yes
i want some reporter trying to one-up them and tony and bucky sharing a Very Specific eye-roll before teaming up to seamlessly oblitterate the guy with the smooth and smart fast-talk, just absolutely bouncing off of eachother.
i want them coming to trust eachother, culminating in bucky letting tony work on and eventually replace his prosthetic arm. unexpectedly, tony repays him by letting him suggest ideas for his suit (and others) and letting him take a deeper look.
i want them bonding over experiences with ptsd, trying to help eachother out with tips for panic attacks and grounding methods. i want them to talk about howard and maria, about how they were good friends with bucky but how howard wasnt the best dad, and about their death, and i want them to bond over their mind-controll experiences.
and scott - come on. that sarcastic little shit? if they’d have met different ways you can fucking garentee that he and tony would have gotten along like a house on fire. i mean:
ah yes, first instinct. lets just have a sit down in an abandoned car. these two tired dumbass/smartass dads could be on SUCH the same wavelength. PLUS THE STARK/PYM RIVALRY???? absolutely DELICIOUS and you cannot tell me that scott wouldnt absolutely delight in it.
hank: tony stark is a bastard and his technology is SHIT
scott: he got me a starbucks yesterday actually i think hes pretty great
hank: you whore
breaking in somewhere together??? iron man 3 tony and scott going balls to the wall to gain access to some dickwad’s secret base? do u send in the 2 master spies? no, u send in the booby trap boy and the catburglar. the Big Brain moments they would have with their cool ass tech and pure Skills sneaking in and also simoultaneously knocking over something very expensive because they are so stupid!!
scott introducing tony to every ant he knows and tony keeps pretending he doesnt give a shit but that one is called ANT-onio Banderas and its nuzzling him oh god babies
these two smart dudes trying in an absolute PANIC over something their kids have done like scrape a knee and the kid listens to twenty minuets of them hyperventilating before going ‘i put a plaster on like quarter of an hour ago, its fine’. tony making something Cool and New and Better Than Pym’s Bullshit Ain’t That Right Langy and scott having a reasonable idea of what it does but still managing to both use it to hide steves shield somewhere dumb and also blow it up ten seconds after shouting ‘hey tones i think i got the hang of this!’ tony and scott working together on a new project, surrounded by paper and plans and bits of wire and covered in dinosaur and princess plasters from all the little electric shocks they keep getting, getting hours deep into conversations about tech and ideas.
ant-sized scott accidentally flipping tony over his shoulder and across the room when tony offered him a finger to shake instead of his hand. tony accidentally smacking a pint-sized scott into a ceiling light.
teaching their kids how to prank the other avengers and how to Suddenly And Conveniently Dissapear afterwards - and to make IMMEDIATE BAMBY EYES if caught. scott basically using tony as a sugar daddy and wanting to get bagels or ice cream or starbucks and whining like a child until tony gives him ten bucks. (scott knowing tony’s preferences by heart and always getting him something too.) the two of them lovestruck by super cool women who can and have handed them their respective asses on multiple occasions. verbally oblitterating anyone who opposes them and also being able to absolutely bullshit their way out of any situation because they are Liars and Good At It.
bonding over the heavy responsibility of using powerful technology for the greater good that they kind of inherited from people they want to live up to but also be better than, and scared of what would happen if that trusted tech fell into the wrong hands. taking that tech and making it theirs and only theirs. concepts of identity. and bonding over wanting to be the best example for their kids and give them everything, and trying to make sure they dont make the same mistakes as they did. i mean, scott understood why tony wasn’t willing to help at first in endgame - sure it fucking killed him, but the most important thing to him is cassie, and he gets that tony doesnt want to risk basically making morgan never exist. if the roles were reversed then could he make the choice? could he face up to the posibility of dooming cassie to get hope and her parents back? like these guys have so much to Talk about. theres a level of insintric understanding that just wasn’t explored.
like look at all the cool shit we could have had, but no, just Outright Hatred.
some avengers endgame Thoughts cause i saw the movie yesterday and can't stop thinking about it
of course..... spoilers ahead
nebula and tony playing!!!! i just love how nebula's personality comes through without it being ooc
also... nebula carefully sitting tony up. she Cares so much :(
steve immediately going to tony :( like im a stucky kind of gal but holy shit i love them
which was completely erased in the next scene where tony drags steve up and down and after that passes out, which is a confrontation Mood
i wonder how they made tony look so skinny and sick. if it was cgi then i applaud them cause it looked so good
the way they killed thanos so fucking quickly here... i don't know how to feel lmao. like cutting the gauntlet arm and then slicing his neck... that's what we were all screaming at them during infinity war. it's good to see them learn from their mistakes, i guess ?
(can't remember the order in which things happen from now so forgive me if i make a mistake)
i told my sister "that's one of the russos!!!!!" so it took me ten seconds to realize that the russo was the gay character everyone was talking about (i thought it would be fury for no other reason than it being shocking and fury having very little to do with the plot, but)
and steve being supportive of that :( man out of time said gay rights!
carol's new hair!! holy shit!!!!!
rocket insinuating carol has been experimenting with more hairstyles... i would like to see it
don't think i missed that carol x rhodey nod. i support it.
don't wanna say it now... for now ill just state: i love what they're doing with natasha in the movie. she truly feels like a friend to steve. like that small gesture of her sliding the plate towards steve is just so domestic and beautiful! it really makes her feel so human and complex at the end. i was so worried about her being wasted but i loved her throughout the film
it was a fucking rat who got scott out. i have to laugh.
also is that the guy from that old "gayyyyy" meme????
cassie is all grown up!!!!!! i can't even imagine how hard it had been for her
also what happened to her mom? and the stepdad??? are they fine????? i hope so
i was hoping we would get more tony as a dad in this movie and it delivered!! tony is so fucking good with kids. the bond between him and morgan was so well portrayed
also the place they live in is so cozy and that's what he deserves
when steve stepped down the car in that black outfit with the leather jacket on i gasped... he's fucking gorgeous
i kept wanting him and tony to kiss lmao tf is wrong with me
OKAY my hawkeye rights. i missed him so much
the stylish subtitles on the middle of the screen felt like too much. this isn't a tumblr gifset honey, just write them down!
thinking about the whole clintasha conversation really foreshadows the whole thing. natasha cares so deeply about clint and really puts his needs before hers. it's so beautiful to see
honestly... my clintasha rights!
i think the hulk/bruce scene was kinda endearing but then the ant man banter dragged on for toooo long
the dab i YELLED. these poor kids have to stand this man on 2023 pulling out 2016 trends to appear Hip and Cool
fat thor...... i hate how it was handled. hate it so fucking much.
new asgard! that's so cute. i hope that's on norway
miek and korg are alive!!!!
the thought of thor insulting a possibly 14 year old on fortnight is too much for me. it sounds like bad fanon talk. i still laughed (bc noobmaster69??? that's fucking hilarious)
tonys reaction to i love you 3000 is so beautiful. like the way he looks taken aback and so happy. i love irondad
steve in a white shirt and jeans!!!! i gasped again. he's delivering, the fucking model
i know they were like, barely being decent to each other again, but i still wanted my stony hug:(
when they're discussing their infinity stones memories and natasha and tony are laying down together on a table???? adorable. amazing.
also why tf didn't nebula said the soul stone required a sacrifice??? i thought that's what she got from gamora dying in volmir
as soon as natasha and clint arrived to volmir i began chanting "nonononononononono"
fuckkdjdksndk fucking nebula. cue to more nononono chanting
rhodey knocking out quill with a single hit is the funniest scene in the movie
clintasha calling on bullshit on the sacrifice thing was also quite funny
the forehead touch :((( im so weak! so sad!
clintasha literally fighting each other to be each other's sacrifice!!!! kill me now!!!!
jeez now i can finally say it: scarjo shined so fucking much on this movie!!!! her delivery was amazing, i really felt a connection between her and the avengers, it really showed her growth during the five year time jump. she fucking killed it. she did her best and she's the best black widow we could've ever gotten.
clint mourning her :((((( probably the third time i cried during the movie
thor's panic attack being used for cheap laughs was the most uncomfortable moment for me... or any scene where people only saw thor as Fat and Lazy (basically, two thirds of the movie)
the freya + thor reunion was so sweet though!
okay. okay. hear me out. tony was on a very serious mission to regain an infinity stone. and the first thing he does is check out steve's ass. and aknowledge how glorious it is. i couldn't believe what i was watching!!!!!! like that actually fucking happened. consider me a fully formed stony bitch.
and scott joining in to say it was "america's ass" ???? poetic cinema
so it's canon that everyone checks out steve's ass and appreciates it as a national treasure. that's all i never thought id needed.
steve saying "hail hydra" i YELLED. it was a nice nod to the whole "cap is a nazi" mess
and steve fighting himself... hot
using his bucky trauma to shock himself is :/// but also :((((
i loved that for one moment i knew everyone on the theatre was staring at steve's ass
and steve being appreciative of his own butt!!!! ok that's all i have to say about steve's ass
i loved the reminder that thor was still kinda goofy back in avengers 1, for everyone who says taika completely changed his character. and the little tony + thor moment was adorable
"howard..... potts" i can understand tony being a mess but how did howard not suspect of anything??? elevator lady took one look of steve's face and all of her alarms started ringing
peggy carter... ive missed my wife so much
did peggy marry souza. i hope she did. steve tf are you doing staring at a married woman (jk)
clint kicking the stones away as soon as bruce is done with the snap is the biggest mood
also... the hell was scott looking at that made him think it had worked? just... more birds outside? i was really curious
the irony of the only avenger without superpowers being left with the stones
"i know you" *hands out stones* how can you not love clint, he's so pure
nebula killing his 2014 self is a power move. that would be me if i met my 2014 self
thor with a braided beard!!!!! beautiful
thanos is like, a real threat and i love that
okay. i kinda saw it coming. i saw thor leave mjolnir behind and i thought "oh????". and then the shock of thanos being able to wield stormbreaker. and then fucking mjolnir moving!!!!! i was the only person in the theatre who yelled
but seriously!!!! steve wielding AND fighting with mjolnir!!!!! couldn't stop thinking about it all day!!!!!!!!! STEVE IS WORTHY!!!!!!!
parallels to thor going for the chest. it never works babies!
and just.... this was steve's moment. steve i-can-do-this-all-day rogers really fighting with every ounce of his body and soul against the most powerful being on earth. justice for him getting knocked after touching thanos for one second in iw!
and steve getting up again! all dirty and wounded!! trembling with exhaustuation and resolution!!! with his broken shield on his arm!!!! just him facing the biggest army of the universe!!!!! so powerful
sorry to destroy this epic moment, but like, okay. people had been reintegrated to life like, twenty minutes before. and i understand that they were all confused and out of place. but sam really needed ALL that time to just... try to communicate with steve????? ok
the "avengers..." *brings mjolnir with one hand while bracing his shield with the other* "assemble" moment was... oh my God. chills all over my body.
that One Moment where steve has stormbreaker on his hand... so fucking hot
the tony and peter reunion holy shit. the hug was everything i needed! like please just hug tony stark for ages
and tony and pepper fighting together!!! that's a power couple right there
i felt it when quill looked at gamora and just... stopped. im so sad his moment was played for laughs when it was obviously such an important moment for his character
thanos was so fucking scared of wanda that he put his own troops at risk to stop her for a little while. strongest avenger right there!
and carol coming back!!!! i was like
i felt so relieved at that point. i was like "yeah thanos is fucking over what's next"
no need to talk about all the women coming together to defend peter :')
thanos getting the gauntlet again... the nonono chanting came back
fucking CAROL trying to stop him. looking at him with such a determined face, like "you can't stop me from stopping you". it was so powerful he had to snatch one stone to stop her
and strange giving him the one finger to tony.... i knew what was coming holy shit. i knew it. they knew it.
tony really proved himself there. it was his best scene on the entire mcu, don't argue with me!!!!!! the way he stood there and took all the power of the stones, unmasked, unaffected, powerful and almighty
"i am... iron man" cue to ugly sobbing
tony knew there was no other way. pepper did, too... she knew exactly what she had to tell him. she was right. tony spent all of these years moved by selfishness first, then fear, then guilt. an endless battle since thanos was on his head. but the war was over. what mattered was that he saved everyone, and he sacrificed himself for everyone. a complete 180° from last movie's ending.... wow
gotta said... peter there felt a little bit out of place for me. i think it would've been more powerful if he didn't say anything, though peter is a teenager, i can get it
his arc with steve felt unfinished, too. i would've liked to see steve's reaction as well, since tony had told him he wanted everyone back and also for his family so survive. but whatever
im not against tony killing thanos instead of gamora and nebula but i would've liked if we saw them react to his death, at least:/ like a little parallel between nebula's reaction at the beginning and the end of endgame
the One stucky interaction here was pulled from cap1 and iw. i feel betrayed
bucky Knew what steve was going to do. i wonder if steve told him before or bucky just sensed it
you can't convince me steve would go back and carelessly dance with peggy knowing his friend is being used like a weapon by hydra and bound to kill tonys parents. nah nah. it all felt wrong
my steggy rights!!!
love that the russos foreshadowed cap!bucky on tws just to give the shield to sam at the end
anyways what the fuck bucky was all steve had but he lived the happiest life without it and left him alone on the 21st century? okay fuck y'all
#long post#avengers endgame#endgame spoilers#avengers spoilers#avengers endgame spoilers#a4 spoilers#mine#marvel#this is.... so long and idk how to add a read more on mobile#but enjoy my thoughts i guess
Comics and the MCU
In the years I’ve been playing MCU Tony, I’ve noticed things about how the characters are different than their Comic counterparts. I don’t read the comics, mind, but by this point, I’ve had enough exposure and played with enough people who are from those verses, that I’ve reached some conclusions.
Interesting conclusions.
The short of it is this: MCU Howard is basically Comic Tony if he’d been born in a different era.
Now I’ll throw out the long-range version of this. See, this thought started several months ago when talking to someone who plays MCU Howard and Ults Tony. I play with both, and they do a wonderful job with their characters, so I agree they know what they’re talking about. Many of the things I love about how they play their Howard are things that are rather universal to MCU Howards I’ve dealt with over the years, so it’s hardly just theirs.
You see, we were talking about Tony vs Tony and just how the different types of Tony usually are entirely dependent on where a Tony comes from, and how bewildering it is to see Comic things thrown overtop an MCU Tony. Because MCU Tony is a different creature. Yes, they all have the armor in common, that’s a Tony Stark thing, but there are many many things that are different between them.
So, I’ll start at the beginning and let you draw your own conclusions, shall I?
The very first, most pivotal thing that pops into my head is Steve.
MCU Tony views Steve as an aggravating friend slash brother figure that he had to live up to as a kid that his dad adored. He trusts him right up until he can’t, and he expects it to be reciprocal when it clearly isn’t. Yes, there is mutual respect, but they’re not actually close, and while Steve would trust Tony to defend the Earth, he never once considers he might come down on his side when it comes to defending a friend.
Comic Tony, from what I understand, is a whole other animal in Steve’s general direction. They’re close, they have an unwavering bond, they count on one another even when they’re at odds, and Tony actively loves and is somewhat of a Cap fanboy, a sentiment which is returned to a degree. In essence, from the word go, Tony was on Steve’s side and did everything he could for him, because of course. On top of all this, he looked for Steve for a long time before finding him, because that was just what he needed to do.
Now I’m going to point out MCU Howard’s view on Steve. Howard was instant friends with Steve when they met up properly, and there was a touch of proprietary affection there because Howard helped make him into the person he was. He was his friend, they joked with one another, trusted one another unshakably, and when Howard lost Steve it affected him for the rest of his life. He searched for him in every spare moment, something which affected his relationship with his son. He loved him and practically says as much during the Agent Carter series, which is a point that can’t be stressed enough.
So, moving on from that point to point two.
The Company.
Now, I’m a little hazier on Comic Tony’s position on a lot of things to do with this one, and I can’t for the life of me remember if he shut down weapons like MCU Tony did. Was that a thing? If he did, it was certainly far later up the timestream, and definitely not when he came back because he kept Iron Man’s identity a secret. I do know that he built world ending horrors of weapons because he felt it was the best way to deal with certain problems. We also know that he was a very very astute businessman who enjoyed that part of the company, and never actually let go of it while he had a choice about it, because why would he?
We all know MCU Tony got out of the weapon business pretty much at his first real reason to, and never hid being Iron Man. He stopped building horrors on purpose (yes, I admit that Ultron was fumbled badly but he had help with that one), and basically turned to defense rather than offense as his primary weapon. Of course, then there’s the whole ‘here Pepper have my company’ thing which we can all agree that Comic Tony would probably never have done. Not while he was still alive or capable anyway.
And then we have Howard in the MCU. Howard who builds weapons he calls ‘bad babies’ and hides away because of their sheer destructive possibility, who built his company from nothing because it was something he wanted. Howard who ran the company for more than forty years without even seeming to give a hint he’d hand it over to Tony before someone pried it out of his cold dead hands. Howard who was comfortable with the idea of being in a war and staying on that track even after though his first love was planes, once upon a time.
Speaking of love, that brings me to point three of this mess.
Relationships.
Everyone knows that Comic Tony is a relationship disaster. He’s a serial dater, with many long and short relationships in his past that usually ended badly for one reason or another. He has a rather vigorous sex life, he takes bets and is comfortable wandering down the street naked because of them, and in general he never really stops, though he’s devoted as can be when he’s with someone.
MCU Tony, while having been with a lot of people, never really dated. Sure, he’d have one night stands, and the fact that he calls Maya an ‘ex-girlfriend’ because of one says a lot about how ill-equipped he is when he gets serious with Pepper. He’s never done this before, and he has no idea what he’s supposed to do. He’s loyal, devoted, and generally content to run with it once he’s there, but it’s still his first real relationship, and that matters.
Now, back to MCU Howard. In Agent Carter, we learn very quickly that he has a wild sex life, he dates people all the time at varying amounts of intensity, and eventually he ends up with Maria, his wife, and has his son, who never sees his dad’s wild party side, so we can only presume that Maria might very well be why he stopped. After all, Howard used to regularly throw parties and invite in a bunch of half-naked women to run around at the drop of a hat. While not orgies, one should account for the times.
And then the last point. Superhero nonsense and SHIELD.
Comic Tony ends up in charge of an organization like SHIELD briefly, SWORD which I hear was British, as well as SHIELD itself at some point. He’s political, he’s meticulous, and he goes out of his way to make sure that the superhero community is sorted out. He’s one of two people who really got the superhero ball rolling. In essence, he’s a very important person in the super spy and superhero arenas. He likes being in charge of all that, and he has an aptitude for it that he uses.
MCU Tony, bless his heart, is not a politician. He wants nothing to do with running a spy anything, barely wants to be involved with the team at first at all, and most certainly is not a politician. If he was a politician, there was no way he would have been so far behind the curve with the accords. The poor man had no idea what was going on until far too late to do anything about it. That doesn’t mean he wasn’t trying, but he was late to the game, and out of his depth. He’s a businessman, not a politician, and it shows.
MCU Howard, well, let’s just start with him having been accused of treason and still coming out the other side with enough clout to build SHIELD in the first place, shall we? Who does that? He’s a consummate liar, self-admitted, who does anything and everything he must to get where he feels he needs to be. This doesn’t make him a bad man, no, but it does make him ruthless, a trait that his son simply isn’t as good at and Comic Tony is.
Conclusion, when looking at all this?
MCU Howard is a reflection of Comic Tony. We don’t know what his childhood was like, how good or bad it was, and yes, he wasn’t a very expressive parent to Tony, but he didn’t hurt him either, and we don’t see anything that indicates that he was a drunk the way Comic Howard was. No, he was more likely a severely awkward product of his times that learned to not be as open as he’d been when he was young, which is, interestingly, something that MCU Tony learns as the MCU goes on as well. We can see that in progress.
MCU Howard takes many of Comic Tony’s best traits, and sometimes his worst ones as well, and uses them. They were just set in another era, one with different values than even Comic Tony would have had to deal with, and shaped the man who ended up with them differently.
All of these Starks are still Starks, they’re still all ridiculous, liable to be kidnapped geniuses, but when people throw down a bunch of Comic Tony headcanons all over MCU Tony it doesn’t make sense, because they’re rather different people. Now, if you look at it from the perspective of MCU Howard being the reflection of Comic Tony, and MCU Tony being the product of that legacy, it’s a different, far more fascinating story.
Sure, the name Tony Stark is still irrevocably linked to the title of Iron Man, but the hows and whys and approach differ wildly, as well as how it’s handled. The core things of who the characters themselves are is a little more important than just what they do, I think, and I thank you all for reading this fascinating parallel that’s become obvious to me over time.
And that my friends, is all I’ll say about that. For the moment anyway.
P.S. Edwin Jarvis. Enough said.
