Toa Zaria - Duckbricks Yesterday Quest Fanon Competition

This is my design of Toa Zaria, from Bionicle's last unfinished serial the Yesterday Quest, for Duckbricks' latest Fanon Design Competition.

Zaria's canon characterisation is that of someone conflicted about being a Toa, in particular the use of violence to enforce order or protect others. His stated weapon is a 'staff', but given the wiggle room for that I went for a kanabou - long staves often studded with iron rivets, commonly used by samurai police as a less-than-lethal way of subduing criminals. Zaria has a lot of power over others with his ferrokinetic powers, so his kanabou has no other special qualities other than just being a big heavy weight on the end of a pole. Other than that, I used as many dark orange, pearl dark grey and copper parts as I could muster. I like how the barrel halves look for his chest.

All parts are canon-compliant.

Toa Zaria Contest Entry

Toa Zaria - a Toa of Iron who once infamously killed a Makuta in self-defense.

Custom Parts/Colors Used The mask used is Galva's Mask of Adaptation, freely available in the Karzahni's Collection pack on Thingiverse. All other parts used are LEGO parts, though they are not all available in the given colors. The Bionicle parts not available in Stud.io and/or in the given colors are as follows:

Mahri shoulder armor (part #57544), modeled in BioPack 2023, archived by VootCaboot here. LEGO did make these in Light Bright Orange.

Hydruka Back Plate (part #59577) are available in the standard Stud.io download. LEGO did make these in Light Bright Orange, but they are very rare & expensive on Bricklink. I recommend printing them.

Bionicle 1x3 Tooth (part #x346) are available in the standard Stud.io download, but LEGO does not make these in Light Bright Orange.

Metru Knee Cover (part #47299) is available in the standard Stud.io download, but LEGO did not make these in Pearl Dark Gray.

Metru Head Short Brainstalk (part #57536) is available in the standard Stud.io download, but LEGO did not make these in Trans-Red. Could substitute a standard Metru brainstalk (part #47313, also available in standard Stud.io), as those did come in Trans-Red.

If we go with the idea that Toa Code is not something hardwired into the Toa but something they uphold on their own accord and that it's something that was created at some point to guide the future Toa, we could speculate that:

The Toa Nuva, who have been created in the time before time, obviously are not adhering to said Code cuz it didn't exist in the early years.

Helryx stated that she doesn't follow the Code, and she is the First Toa, which confirms the above assumption.

I don't remember if it's a real fact or just my own speculation, but the Toa Code emerged basically after Zaria killed a Makuta. Maybe. In that way he has more in common with the Nuva than other Toa Teams (hence why it's not at all surprising to me that the Nuva had no qualms or afterthoughts with wiping out the Makuta in Karda Nui; that and also the fact that the Makuta presented an existential threat ), and is maybe why he's chosen as an oddball team member in the unfinished serials.

So yeah, the Toa Code is very flexible, but the biggest taboo is probably directly or indirectly causing harm to a fellow Matoran. Rahi beasts, constructs and other species are a fair(er) game.

Thinking about the grey areas in the Toa code.

The Toa Nuva overloaded the Bohrok Kal with power until they were destroyed, but didn't walk away thinking that they had killed somebody (in part because the Kal had wanted their power and partly because they were technically non living despite being sapient)

Vakama claimed that Toa aren't killers despite killing multiple Visorak, which are implies to have Matoran-level intelligence. Whereas some other Toa would consider killing even the less intelligent Rahi a breach of their principles.

The Toa Metru blasted Roodaka with elemental powers and she vanished, yet none of them seemed to feel responsible for killing her (ok yeah she turned out not to be dead, but still)

The Toa Nuva (with Ignika's help) kickstarted the energy storms that killed most of the Makuta, but didn't think of this as them killing the Makuta themselves.

This is not to say that the Toa shouldn't have done any of those things, it's just interesting to me how the definition of "killing" can be a bit flexible when the narrative requires it. And could be interesting from a characterisation perspective about where the threshold is for individual Toa.

Ok so not too long ago, Toa Zaria’s weapon was confirmed to be a staff, as such I have come up with a couple of design concepts.

For my own personal Zaria, I went with a more beefy staff to match his look, as well as have the ability to fire the end off with explosive force to extend his reach and deal major damage (iron powder can be explosive so I think works nicely):

For the MOC of @bioniclechicken’s Zaria design, I felt that a staff that could break apart into a three section staff would be appropriate, as it is not too dissimilar to his original nun-chunks:

Made some updates to Zaria, now he can actually hold his wrench!!

It became common praxis after enough popular moccists and fanartists started to depict them that way years ago, which influenced a lot of other people to do the same in their own interpretations, some of which then went on to become popular themselves. But I don't know who exactly was the first one to start the trend. My guesses would be BobTheDoctor, bioniclechicken, and/or Kodiak, since their versions of the characters are the oldest I know of that have achieved that status of being so well-known throughout the fandom, but they in turn could have been basing their designs on discussions held back in the day on bzpower or even older mocs by other people : /

Ok but why does (almost) everyone give Orde a Sanok and Zaria a Mask of Adaptation? Like surely it would make sense for Orde - one of the first Toa - to wear a Hau? Which is like. The mask, both in and out of universe?

For the record, my Zaria and Orde takes (which can be seen here) use a G2 Mask of Earth and Boneheads Of Voodoo Island-inspired mask, respectively.
