Hater opinion regarding Nanami is that she's not a character motivated by her own sexuality*, *She's heterosexual, in the sense that she believes there are no other options, and giving her any options is a basic quality of life upgrade
So much by the fear that she is insane, motivated by the fact that everyone around her thinks she's insane (Touga, Miki, Utena, Aiko-Keiko-Yuuko, etc.), motivated by the fact that Nanami shows symptons of paranoia* *Yes Touga is trying to kill her, yes Tsuwabuki and Akio are also trying to kill her, Anthy is playing mind games, etc. But kind of importantly, Nanami often accuses/hurts people who sincerely aren't paying her any mind (Utena, Anthy in ep 3, Keiko in ep 19, that cat, Tsuwabuki in ep 18) who Nanami often regrets alienating, while also blind to the idea that Touga is trying to kill/poison her.
Also motivated by Nanami's own awareness that being InsaneTM is Not Good, that Ohtori's mental health services suck ass, that being a PrinceTM (in her case, being so heterosexual she'd do her brother's job while he's out sick) is a form of power, and that being Straight = Not insane, because being Queer = Insane, and thus something to be fixed (ie. Miss Tenjou, Kozue, Shiori, Juri, Anthy).
Like, I guess my point is, that Nanami deals mainly with themes of the Family Stricture and Mental Illness, and how those reinforce each other, with the family positioned as the cure & balm against mental illness. Which is an illusion. Anyways.
