The parallels between Isabella of France and Gwendolen, legendary and probably fictional queen of the Britons ... much to think about 👀
#To be clear this is an unserious post that shouldn't be used to simplify either of their lives or to narrativize history#But look up Gwendolen's story I promise you'll see what I mean#Hugh le Despenser also works really well as a parallel to Estrildis#Both their relationships with their kings began in less-than-ideal circumstances (Hugh and Edward II don't seem to have been close;#Estrildis was the daughter of Locrinus' enemy and then his prisoner of war) before eventually becoming much more intimate#Both were killed by their kings' estranged wives after they seized power and their families were similarly targeted along with them#Isabella of France#my post#english history
