Axton being bisexual actually started out as a glitch: he has a flirtatious ’reviving ally’ line that was meant to be just for female characters, but instead it activated for everyone. Fans started headcanoning him as bi, and Gearbox went “Huh, alright then” and added dialogue that supported it in the DLCs like Dragon Keep. Also, fun bonus thing to point out: The first human characters you meet on Pandora in 2 and Elpis in Pre-Sequel are canonically gay and get married to other existing characters later in the series.

Listen, I know it's "cringe" and everyone is supposed to hate it because it's bad or whatever the excuse is for the current entry, but I legit love the Borderlands series.

Unlike most other games I've played, they add gay and bi characters and ironically play them straight.

In 2, you hear about how Hammerlock had a boyfriend and you're helping to find a memento left behind when the guy got eaten (long after they broke up, it's not a 'died for gay character growth' trope). Axton is revealed to be bi, but the only thing they go to town about is his ex wife and how is is "engaged to his turret".

In the pre-sequel, Janey had a wife that also got eaten, and you help her exact revenge. She's also a stalker of Moxxi, and while they do make fun of stalkers with it, they never make fun of her for being a lesbian.

3 really takes the cake, though. When you meet Jakobs, he tells you in no uncertain terms that he and Hammerlock are dating. Stuff like "my darling partner, love of my life". Their wedding is an entire DLC! When they are together they actually interact like people rather than just generic rep tossed in for the sake of Woke Points! And there is even an entire section where Jakobs talks about how he feels so inadequate for being so different from Hammerlock, thinking that he'd be better with someone more like him. You don't even get this kind of stuff with straight characters in media!

And Wonderlands has the gay skeleton pirates exes and their antics. Which, once again, have great dialogue with each other through the end of their story.

Like, yeah - it shows that the people who worked on it really care about it. Usual modern dev issues with bugs and balance aside, everything actually feels good and evolves with each entry. But I honestly really love the series because it has explicitly canon gay characters, and not once do they make this big deal about it or use it as a joke.

BORDERLANDS CHARACTER OF THE DAY #4!!!!!!

Today's Borderlands chatarcter is *drumroll*

CLAPTRAP!!

That's right, today's character is the robot himself, Claptrap! This little robot is the first character you meet in each Borderlands game, making him the obvious choice for best NPC. His jokes are pretty funny, and his design is, while simple, really good! He can give you side quests, and in Borderlands 2, even give you high-fives!

And finally, in Borderlands 3, During the Guns, Love, and Tentacles DLC, he is sent off to find a thought to be fake item which was made up by Gaige, but he returns with said item, believing he had saved the wedding.
