Three Strikes
Tumblr media
This is also a common trend among people that have been released from jail or prison. Instead of deterring these people from committing a crime, they see time served as street cred or a reputation enhancer. This occurrence can be fairly common. This is where the three strikes law can be seen as a beneficial policy. When looking at the rates of recidivism “45% of federal inmates are arrested again within 5 years of their release. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 77% of all inmates are arrested again within 5 years. A 2014 Swedish study, reported by Politifact, found that 1% of the population accounted for 63% of all violent crime convictions. The three strikes law is designed to keep these habitual offenders in prison so that the rest of the society can experience greater safety”(Gaille 2017). This can be beneficial as there is a small percentage of people that reoffend that actually make up a large amount of the violent crime convictions. This could reduce the amount of violent crimes that are committed in the future.
