Kanthallur Salai
The salais were institutions of higher education associated with temples (Kanthallur salai, Parthivapuram salai, Thiruvalla salai, Moozhikkulam salai etc.). Established by the Ay kings, they followed gurukula system (students living in proximity to the teacher) Though the royalty provided free food, clothing and accommodation to the students, the administration of salas were mostly autonomous.
Known as 'Dakshina Nalanda', Kanthallur salai is believed to have been founded by the Ay king Karunthadakan (857-885 AD). Later, this salai gained world fame as a center of learning. Students from foreign countries like Sri Lanka too came to Kanthallur salai for higher studies. This mahashala provided training in multiple branches of knowledge including martial arts. What set Kanthalloor apart from other ancient Indian universities of that era was the diversity in the subjects it offered. In Kanthalloor, students were taught subjects such as atheism which were considered taboo in other universities.
There are conflicting opinions about the exact location of Kanthallur salai. KV Subramania Iyer speculated that Kanthallur salai may have been located in a village called Kanthallur, seven miles from Neyyatinkara in present-day Thiruvananthapuram district. T. Gopinatha Rao quotes records dating back to the 9th century which refer to the deity in present day Valiyashala as Kanthallur Chalai Mahadeva.
Kanthalur salai appears repeatedly in the Chola inscriptions. There are several references to Kanthallur salai in Rajarajan's inscriptions about the attacks on Ay, Mahodayapuram and Mooshika kingdoms. It is thought that Ay rajas have become the vasals of Pandyas by that time. His inscription from the 4th year of his reign mentions 'Kanthalur Salai kalamaruthu aruli'. In fact, this is his first achievement listed in the chronology of events. Rajarajan was obviously very proud of this achievement.
Since 'kalamaruthu' can have many connotations, there were arguments that this means that the ships at Kanthallur were destroyed or that only the free food distribution for the students was stopped.
However in 2009, a hero-stone (veerakkal) belonging to the reign of Rajarajan was unearthed. It has a eulogy in Tamil that talks about the king “beheading the Malai Alargal (chera warriors)”, settling the long-standing debate about what he did at Kanthallur Salai. It is evident that Cholas destroyed the salai, annexed the port of Vizhinjam and killed the warriors. The salai is mentioned in the records of his successors too, showing multiple Chola invasions across generations.
Later, Vizhinjam was renamed as Rajendrachola Pattanam. Due to the incessant attacks of Cholas, the importance of Vizhinjam port and Kanthalloor Salai (if it survived Rajarajan's attacks in the first place) gradually deteriorated. Between the 10th and the 12th centuries Kanthalloor Salai and the port of Vizhinjam, were completely destroyed in war.
=======
In my upcoming fanfiction about Ravidasan, he and Parameshwaran will be Kanthallur Salai alumni and they will send little Amarabhujangan for higher education in this place.
In historical inscriptions, his name is Ravidasan Panchavan Brahmadhirajan. Brahma arayan/Brahmadhi rajan were titles given to high class Brahmin officials in administration and military. Another person of similar status mentioned in the novel is the Prime Minister of the Chola Kingdom, Aniruddha Brahmarayar.
The above picture is purely for aesthetic purposes.

INTRODUCTION TO MALAYALAM – A BEGINNER’S GUIDE
Who speaks Malayalam
Malayalam is the spoken language of the South Indian state Kerala and Union Territory of Lakshadweep. This constitutionally recognized classical languages of India, has a recorded history of more than 2000 years. Malayalam is a Dravidian language with distinct script, evolved grammar and rich literature.
Kerala state is divided into 14 districts. The capital of Kerala is Thiruvananthapuram (തിരുവനന്തപുരം).
How To Learn Malayalam
https://www.maralika.org/home/view/185
For a beginner, who is completely new to the language, it is always better to start with alphabets for systematic learning, rather than by starting with some phrases or catchy words. The alphabet sequence in Malayalam is known as Aksharamala. Malayalam Aksharamala consists of Vowels, Consonants and Chillaksharas.
Check out these free self-study courses and materials for beginners
https://www.maralika.org/home/view/199
https://www.maralika.org/home/view/207
Learning these Alphabets and understanding their correct pronunciation should be the first challenge. It is understandable that in the beginning it will be a bit difficult, but it will get easier with constant practice.
How to practice Alphabets
Each alphabet has its own sound. Some alphabets look similar, while some sound similar. But we know there are differences and each alphabet is unique with its own structure and sound. So the challenge is to recognize and distinguish different alphabets.
Check these free audio with text lesson https://www.maralika.org/home/view/200
To Learn alphabets, the easiest way is to listen to the audio, With image of the particular alphabet in front. Listening to audios of simple words along with the scripts of those words, can be very helpful to recognize and distinguish different alphabets for beginners. Listen as much as possible to be familiar with the language.
Watch this video lesson for listening practice and enjoyable learning
Subscribe and watch our YouTube channel for more video lessons https://youtube.com/@maralika1247
Once the complete alphabets and their correct pronunciation is understood, then we can proudly say that we have cleared the first level!!!.
Start Reading
At this point the students feel more at ease and will be confident that they now know the Alphabets. It truly is a great achievement!!!
It’s time to start reading. While doing reading practice, read out loud. As you read out, you can listen to your own voice.
Subscribe these free reading materials for reading practice : https://www.maralika.org/home/view/197
Reading out loud can be helpful not only to check and correct ourselves, but also it will be easier when we start speaking. Words will flow fluently if practice reading out.
Expand Vocabulary
With a minimum of 800 words one can communicate effectively in a language. Once the student starts reading, new words will be naturally added to the vocabulary. Mind is curious to learn new words and phrases. To make it more productive, target to learn and memories a minimum of 5 words daily. Gradually and effortlessly more and more words will be added to your vocabulary. Don’t skip listening along with the scripts and reading out even for a day.
Subscribe this free material to improve reading as well as vocabulary
Connecting Different Words
Now we can understand the language. We have covered a good distance in this journey. Shall we explore more?
Let us try conversation. If we start a conversation in a new language, at first we will get only words. We may not be able to make a complete and meaningful sentence.
To make a meaningful sentence, we should arrange words properly. For our convenience we have categorized words into nouns, verbs etc. There are some words that combines, relates or co-ordinate other words in a sentence.
Some Examples in Malayalam
• And – ഉം – Um • If – എങ്കിൽ – enkil • But – പക്ഷെ – pakshe • In – ഇൽ – il • Because – അതുകൊണ്ട് – athu kondu • Then – പിന്നെ – pinne • Therefore – ആയതിനാൽ – aayathinal
How to Ask
Interrogative words are a very important part of language. Conversation often leads to questions and answers. Make an effort to learn and memorise basic question words, while expanding vocabulary.
Important Question Words In Malayalam
• What – Enthu( എന്ത്) • Who – Aaru (ആര്) • When – Eppol (എപ്പോൾ) • Where – Evide(എവിടെ) • How – Engane (എങ്ങനെ) • Which – Eethu (ഏത്)
Yes/No words in Malayalam
If we are engaged in a conversation at the learning stage, we mostly tend to answer with yes or no. Yes, and No are the basic, simplest and most effective response one can express as well as understand. It is interesting that these two can be effectively expressed and understood without saying.
Yes / No words in Malayalam
Yes
•അതെ (Athe) •ആണ് (Aanu) •ഉവ്വ് (Uvvu) •ഉണ്ട് (Undu)
No
•അല്ല (Alla) •ഇല്ല (Illa)
Conclusion
Human mind is always curious to learn new things. Knowing new things or learning something new keeps the mind fresh, creative and happy.
Learning a new language has many advantages.
• It can improve memory and listening skills • Enhance focus and concentration, • It boosts understanding capacity, • Strengthens learning ability, • Uplifts confidence and self-respect.
It is said that everything is difficult before it gets easy. The same can be said for languages too. It is hard in the beginning and gets easier with practice. Important thing is to practice without break. Do practice every day, either by listening to audios, or reading. Learn new words daily. Do listen daily even if you are unable to grasp a word. Remember to read out daily even if it is not coming fluently or perfectly. Gradually and eventually it can be mastered.
HAPPY LEARNING!!!

Attukal Pongala, the largest festival for women in the world, begins in Trivandrum
Several dignitaries were present on the temple premises during the lighting of the pandara aduppu. They included Mayor Arya Rajendran, Education Minister V Sivankutty and Shashi Tharoor MP.
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Attukal Pongala, arguably the largest festival of women in the world, began in the Kerala capital Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday. This year, the festival is witnessing a huge participation of devotees.
During the past two years, devotees participated in the ritual by offering pongala at their homes due to the covid situation.
On Tuesday, the rituals began at the Attukal Devi temple when the temple tantri Thekkedath Parameswaran Vasudevan Bhattathirippad handed over a lighted lamp to the melsanthi P Kesavan Namboodiri at the sanctum sanctorum. The melsanthi then lit the hearth at the thidapalli, the temple kitchen, and handed over the lamp to his co-priest. The latter lit the pandara aduppu, a special hearth set up in front of the temple marking the start of the ritual.
Devotees celebrated the lighting of the pandara aduppu by loud chants and bursting crackers. Following the lighting of the pandara aduppu, thousands of devotees lined up on the temple premises and the numerous city streets lit their hearths to cook pongala, the sweet porridge considered to be the favourite of the goddess of the Attukal Devi temple.
Several dignitaries were present on the temple premises during the lighting of the pandara aduppu. They included Mayor Arya Rajendran, Education Minister V Sivankutty and Shashi Tharoor MP.
Various government departments, including the police and district administration, are taking steps for the smooth conduct of the festival. The Health Department has arranged treatment facilities on the temple premises. Devotees have been asked to drink water frequently to avoid dehydration due to the high temperature.

A young lady doctor was brutally stabbed by the surgical knife by the patient brought to the hospital in the company of police and home guard. It is a shock that the police & security personnel at the government hospital were not able to avert the incident that took the life of the bright young lady doctor and brought a void for lifetime in the life of family, friends, relatives, classmates and colleagues.

State Police Chief, Kerala is directed by the Division Bench of the Kerala High Court comprising Hon’ble Mr Justice Devan Ramachandra J & Hon’ble Mr. Justice Kauser Eddapagath J to appear online at 10 am today, when the special sitting in the murder case of Female house Surgeon Vandana Das is proposed. State Police Chief is also required by the Court to submit a report from his side with respect to the incident.
A young lady doctor Vandana Das was stabbed to death by the surgical knife on the wee hours of yesterday at a hospital in Kottarakkara area of Kollam district in Kerala while she was doing medical checkup allegedly by a man, a school teacher, who was brought there by police for treatment in the company of police personnel and homeguard. She sustained multiple stab wounds on her chest and neck and succumbed to injuries after a few hours at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram where she was brought for treatment.
The Court expressed their shock and anguish over the ghastly incident tantamounting to erosion of the faith in the system.
The Court observed that she was serving at the hospital as part of her curriculum, when the gruesome incident took place, snuffing her life and the aspirations of her parents forever.
Submission of standing counsel of the University:
The student community is feeling unsure and unsafe to work as Interns and House Surgeons in Government Hospitals. He submitted unless urgent orders are issued by this Court to assuage their fears, things may take a turn for the worse in the days to come, particularly because they are already on a path of strike.
Observation of the Court
The police could not protect her and the reasons to this will certainly have to be explored and found out.
The incident establishes breakdown of the protection system more so when she was in the premise of Government hospital where it was the duty of the police and security personnels to ensure that doctors, Health Care Professionals, Nurses and others, are protected to the maximum extent.
The Court took serious note of the fact that no substantial development has been reported to the Court by the State Government with respect to amendment in Prevention of Violence and Damage to Property Act, 2012.
Government pleader during the hearing submitted that Government is seriously considering about the amendment and soon it will be brought but unable to give any specific time frame.
The Court expressed its concerns that various directions issued in the past concerning any attack on any doctor, healthcare professional, nurse or such other, should be taken cognizance of by the Police within a one hour. And the netizens be made aware of the incident through all channels including media.
We are still not aware whether directions issued time to time have been fully implemented;
Directions issued by Court in the matter
CCTV visuals be protected of the place where incident took place and it will be the responsibility of Superintendent of Taluk Hospital, Kottarakkara.
Judicial Magistrate first class of Taluk Kottarakkara should visit the hospital and conduct inspection of the scene of incident & report today (11.05.2023).
