#2164 - Dryinus sp. - Pincer Wasp

A bizarrely proportioned wasp that seems to think it's a praying mantis, that I spotted investigating the trunk of a eucalyptus. The name means 'of oak trees' because that's where the first species was collected.

Over 242 species in this genus have been described worldwide, and it's quite well represented in amber too - Baltic, Dominican and Burmese ambers have all preserved species. The family Dryinidae has nearly 2000, with many wingless, but all are ectoparasitoids, usually of planthoppers in the families Cicadellidae, Delphacidae, Flatidae and Membracidae. The weird forelegs are used to seize the victim before they can jump away. The larva soon grows large enough to protrude from the body, and grows a hardened sac called a "thylacium" for protection. When the host eventually succumbs the wasp larva leaves the body and spins a cocoon elsewhere.

This particular one is remarkably large for a Dryinid - almost 2cm long. That seriously limits the kind of planthopper it could be parasitising around Wagga Wagga - I suspect the larger Eurybrachids are the only option.

AKA worgnal, shingle oak, coast she-oak, river oak, salt-water swamp oak, and Casuarina verticillata. The specific means 'forming or having whorls'.

A small tree endemic to SE Australia, usually growing to between 4 and 10m. It usually grows in grassy woodland, sometimes in pure stands and sometimes with eucalypts, but is also found on rocky sea coasts, coastal shale, and on dry ridges inland.

Apparently chewing on the foliage stimulates saliva flow, if you're crossing dry country, and the young cones are edible or at least chewable. The timber has been used for tool-making, boomerangs, and other purposes by our indigenous peoples, and the mature cones (as in the photo) as children's toys. The cones are also the favoured food of Glossy Black Cockatoos in some areas, which is convinient because Glossy Black Cockatoos nest in the reserve.

The discovery of glossy black cockatoo nests on the NSW Mid North Coast is a significant milestone in the conservation of these vulnerable birds. Dr. Hawkins, the NSW Department of Planning and Environment’s senior threatened species officer, expressed the importance of this discovery, saying, “It’s a massive step forward … glossy black cockatoos are among the most-threatened species of cockatoos in Australia and are listed as vulnerable in NSW.” For two decades, the glossy black cockatoo nests remained hidden from human eyes, making it challenging for researchers and conservationists to assess their breeding success and habitat needs. The nests were shrouded in mystery until a group of dedicated citizen scientists known as the “Glossy Squad” entered the scene. The Glossy Squad, comprising citizen scientists passionate about conservation, actively participates in the government’s Saving our Species program. Their determination and dedication led to the discovery of three separate glossy black cockatoo nests in the region. These discoveries were made possible through tips from local residents who suspected the presence of these majestic birds in their vicinity. Dr. Hawkins emphasized the vital role of community involvement, stating, “It’s really hard to find them, and the only way to do it is to have ears and eyes on the ground, a network of community members and citizen scientists who love the birds and pay attention to what the birds are doing on the ground.” This collaborative effort underscores the significance of community engagement in conservation.
