I'm thinking of little 12 year old Sam, trying so hard to impress Dean and his Dad on his first few hunts. He's trying so hard to keep up, to lug equipment, to fight and look cool at the same time like they do. But Sam, lacking the unending charm and grace of Dean, ends up sweaty, embarrassed, and saved by John and Dean. Poor kid, nearly cries of embarrassment before passing out on the two day drive to the next case, all tuckered out from trying his very best for his favorite person.

I just KNOW that little Sam was so desperate to be helpful and to be praised for his efforts. It started with getting Dean a soda every once in a while, beaming with pride when Dean would say

"Thanks, Sammy." Before cracking the soda.

It gradually got bigger, Sam hated feeling useless, so he would surprise Dean by doing his laundry or washing the dishes while he was gone on a hunt with dad. He would happily show Dean what he did, heart soaring with the rough ruffle of his hair and clap on his back. Dean would tell him he did a good job before grabbing a beer and making dinner for them both.
