Loneliness is a heavy burden, but I'd rather be alone than make compromises.

This is what I wrote on letterboxd about Nights of Cabiria (Le notti di Cabiria) from Federico Fellini in 1957:
Last night I had the chance to watch this at our local indie movie theatre, and I was flabbergasted at the piece. First of all, I kept thinking about how incredible it was that they’d been able to get the lighting so right in 1950s Italy, even with a ton of outdoor shots. Second of all, this actress was just out of this world. Her face journeys alone were award-worthy. Plus, her attitude perfectly reflected the mood of the film that manages to portray both the tragedy and the comedy of the life of an individual sex worker.
Also, it was incredible to see a trans woman, even as a side character

I think I may have cried the first time I ever watched anything by Federico Fellini. It was the last 3 minutes of Nights of Cabiria. I’d happened across the clip with zero knowledge of the film and found myself weeping, not just at the contents of the scene, but of the pure humanity of it.
Film is magic.
