Just had a thought about the Hell's Chicken Intervallo - the four focus characters (Gregor, Ryoshu, Meursault, Outis) all parallel the relationship between the store owner and his mother.

All four have a theme of "a mother and child" in their backstories, but while Gregor and Ryoshu have it in a negative context (Hermann experimenting on Gregor, Ryoshu presumably turning her daughter into a sword), Meursault and Outis have it in a positive context (admittedly, this is just based on their literary origins, but a good relationship between parent and child is still central to their origins); as such, outside of their actual skills, this is why Meursault and Outis were able to make food that impressed the owner of Eunbong's Chicken, while Gregor and Ryoshu were turned away.

This may also be why Meursault's cooking was just barely rejected while Outis's was accepted with gusto; Meursault is representative of the child's half of the parent-child dynamic, but the owner of Eunbong's Chicken wasn't looking for a reflection of himself. As such, when Outis brought forth her dish and her role as representative of the parent's half of the parent-child dynamic, it held not only technical mastery, but also the role of the mother that Eunbong's son was looking for.

(Additional thought: with Sinclair and Don Quixote serving semi-important roles as well, it's interesting to note that both have more complicated relationships with their parents. Both had parents who wanted to do right by their children, but had a flawed perspective that drove a wedge between them and their children.)

This. This line. The fact that Outis chimes in to correct Don is so damn good I doubt I'll replace Lantern Don on the main menu any time soon. It makes me smile so much, and for that same reason I also have Boolet Outis on the menu. I need to see the two of them bicker more.
