First Entry: Summary of “IN LIECHTENSTEIN, POWER TO THE PEOPLE — AND THE PRINCE” by Wilfried Marxer
Date of reading: October 4, 2020
Author: Wilfried Marxer
Title of the article: IN LIECHTENSTEIN, POWER TO THE PEOPLE — AND THE PRINCE
Date of publishing: September 25, 2020
Site: https://www.zocalopublicsquare.org/2020/09/25/liechtenstein-governed-monarchy-direct-democracy/ideas/essay/
Summary :
Liechtenstein achieved something seemingly impossible; to govern itself, it uses direct democracy and monarchy. The Constitution, promulgated in 1921, established that the state is ruled by the Prince and the People. To make decisions regarding present and the future, the consensus between two governing bodies has to be achieved.
Liechtenstein is always governed by a prince as the eldest son of the Prince is the designated successor. The princely house of Liechtenstein is not purely passive as other royal families of Europe – and in 2003 it was the side that triggered an initiative to revise the constitution. Now, Liechtensteiners can even abolish the monarchy and become a republic.
Nevertheless, Liechtensteiners show enormous support of the monarchy, seeing the princely family as the fundamental pillar of the principality’s success and stability. Of course, there were few times when the consensus between Prince and the people didn’t come into fruition, yet it doesn’t change the fact Liechtenstein’s political system remains truly exceptional. The veto power of both prince and the people plus the rule of law and biding nature of treaties – results with Liechtenstein’s stabilised political scene, which both sides of the state only benefit from.
Three new words with explanation + Polish translation:
Deftly – quickly, elegantly (zwinnie, wprawnie, zgrabnie)
Unilaterally – one-sidely (jednostronnie)
Primogeniture – the right of the firstborn legitimate child to inherit the parent's entire or main estate. In most contexts it means the inheritance of the firstborn son (agnatic primogeniture); (pierworództwo)

…AND THE HORSE YOU RODE IN ON!
Sometimes I kind of take filmmaking for granted—it’s serious work and gets all my professional attention but sometimes the technical aspects get in the way of the personal ones. Going on three years now ago I wrote and directed some cheesy low budget western student film as part of my academics at the https://www.academyart.edu/ and it did well. I guess you could call it my “technically flawed” masterpiece. It far exceeded all my academic requirements and garnered “oohs” and “aahhs” from peers and professionals as it went on to become an award winning film that eventually morphed into a five part series https://www.facebook.com/TheBigMuddySeries/ which has gone on to a limited theatrical and DVD release with additional awards for excellence in consideration.
From a professional aspect this is wonderful—it’s distracting. Clayton Marxer, one of the original cast members from that very first film, shared a story post-release that I only accidentally stumbled on but it’s heartfelt resonance struck a chord in me that reminded me to never forget the personal experiences of others who don’t take it for granted because for them it was a rare moment in their life where they got to do something extraordinary and Clayton’s story became testament to that fact and it instilled this reminder forever in my psyche.
“Here's the movie I was in. Just released! This experience was extra special. I have had a goal to be in a western of some sort since I was about 6 years old. The other reason it is so special is because I was able to ride my old black horse, AL, in the movie.
Many of you know AL quite well, but for those of you who do not.....
I bought AL as a weanling colt back in 1994. I was 12. I used him in a colt-starting 4-H project and never let anyone else touch him until he was about 6 years old. I did every bit of training on him myself.
At 2 years old, he was winning most events in the 4-H horse shows. By the age of 4, I was roping on him at High School Rodeos. He had quite the personality. In fact, at one of those rodeos, he stole Tiffany Wagner's ice tea out of her hand and tried to drink it. For many years after that, Tiff sent my horse a birthday card every year on May 10th. AL went on to be a world class ranch and rope horse.
Several years ago he started to show the tell-tale signs of navicular. I eventually retired him, much to his dismay. However, when my 2 year-old son was ready to start riding by himself, ole' AL found a new purpose in life. Eventually, he became too slow for Braxton, so now my 3 year-old daughter rides him.
I don't think AL has much time left on his old legs, and it breaks my heart to realize his mortality. He has been a part of nearly every significant chapter of my life. He was even in my wedding. I am closer to that horse than I am to most humans, even close family.
So, when the opportunity arose for me to do this movie, and they asked me to bring a horse, I knew that I had to bring old AL. I had not even ridden him in 7 years. On the day we filmed, I climbed up on him, and I felt that big engine come to life. His head collected into the bridle, and his body moved at the slightest pressure from my leg.
He had all the heart that he ever did, but his feet were just to lame for him to really move. All of his scenes were either standing still or at a slow walk, so he did ok, and I think he really enjoyed himself. He was definitely the most broke horse there, and the best looking I might add. He ended up with more camera time than I did!
As I watched this movie, my eyes started to water. This was very likely the last time I will ever ride my old black horse. BUT WHAT A RUN WE'VE HAD!! From the first ride to the last, every ride was wonderful, and some were downright amazing. I can't think of a cooler last ride than the pair of us in a western movie!! Thank you LORD for the wonderful blessing that is A Le Black, my Albert.”

Dec. 6, 2017: In other news
MerleFest lineup announced
MerleFest, presented by Window World, is proud to announce the initial lineup for MerleFest 2018, which will be held April 26 - 29. The annual homecoming of musicians and music fans returns to the campus of Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro, North Carolina, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The complete lineup for MerleFest 2018 will be announced over the next few months. Today’s lineup announcement includes legendary artist Kris Kristofferson, Jamey Johnson, Robert Earl Keen, The Devil Makes Three, Balsam Range and the Atlanta Pops Orchestra Ensemble, “Mission Temple Fireworks Revival” featuring Paul Thorn & Band, the Blind Boys of Alabama and the McCrary Sisters, and many more. The 2018 Midnight Jam presented by The Bluegrass Situation on Saturday, April 28th will start at 10:30 p.m. and run well past midnight, with special hosts Town Mountain and Jim Lauderdale. This very popular after-hours hootenanny gathers many performers from the festival for impromptu artistic collaborations and one-of-a-kind superstar jams that have become legendary in the festival’s history.
Kris Kristofferson – Kris Kristofferson is a three-time Grammy winner who has recorded 30 albums, including three with pals Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings as part of the Highwaymen. Kristofferson has spent three decades performing concerts all over the world and achieved remarkable success as a country songwriter at the start of the 1970s. His songs helped redefine country songwriting, and by 1987, it was estimated that more than 450 artists had recorded Kristofferson’s compositions. In 1977, he earned a Golden Globe for Best Actor and has acted in more than 70 films to date. Kristofferson is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and has been recognized with the Songwriter Hall of Fame’s prestigious Johnny Mercer Award, the Johnny Cash Visionary Award, BMI’s Icon Award, the Francis Preston Music Industry Award, the PEN Song Lyrics of Literary Excellence Award, and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Kristofferson is scheduled to play on Thursday.
Jamey Johnson – Truth and tradition. These non-negotiable principles serve as the bedrock of the music of eleven-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Jamey Johnson, called “one of the greatest country singers of our time,” by The Washington Post. Indeed, the Alabama native has been acknowledged by many as country music’s north star, guiding us down a path of confession and conflict to a place of reflection and redemption. He has received tremendous praise from The New York Times, Rolling Stone, The Wall Street Journal and other publications, many of which have hailed his albums as masterpieces. His influential album, “That Lonesome Song”, was certified platinum for 1 million in sales, and his innovative double album, “The Guitar Song”, which debuted at No. 1 on the country album charts, received a gold certification. In 2012, he released a Grammy-nominated project honoring one of his heroes, Living for a Song: A Tribute to Hank Cochran. He is one of only a few people in the history of country music to win two Song of the Year Awards – for “Give It Away” and “In Color” – from the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association. He has written singles for George Strait, Trace Adkins, James Otto, Joe Nichols and others. Jamey Johnson is scheduled to play on Friday.
“MerleFest is proud to announce more than 75 artists who are part of the festival’s 2018 lineup, commemorating the 31st year of the festival. MerleFest welcomes back five special artists that have played all 31 years: Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Peter Rowan, Joe Smothers, and Jack Lawrence. The initial lineup reflects the musical diversity and quality of performers who are the hallmark of the festival,” says Steve Johnson, MerleFest Artist Relations Manager. MerleFest is known for its unique mix of traditional, roots-oriented music from the Appalachian region, including bluegrass and old-time music, Americana, blues, country, Celtic, Cajun, cowboy, zydeco, rock and many other styles that the late Doc Watson referred to as “traditional plus.” The full initial lineup includes the following:
Aaron Burdett, Alberti Flea Circus, Andrew Collins Trio, Andy May, Ari Eisinger, Ashley Heath and Her Heathens, Banknotes, Bill Mathis, Bob Hill, Bryan Sutton, Brynmor, Cane Mill Road, Cardboard Fox, Carol Rifkin, Jeanette Queen, Mark Queen, Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer, Charles Welch, Cicada Rhythm, David Holt and Josh Goforth, Dead Horses, Donna the Buffalo, Doolin, Elephant Sessions, Erin Harpe, Flatland Harmony Experiment, Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen, Fireside Collective, Gunner & Smith, Hannah Shira Naiman, Happy Traum, Horsemen Let's Ride, Hubby Jenkins, Hummingbird Crossing, Jack Lawrence, Jayme Stone's Folklife, Jeanette Williams Band, Jeff Little Trio, Jeffrey Foucault, Jody Carroll, Joe Mullins and the Radio Ramblers, Joe Smothers, Junior Appalachian Musicians Band, Laura Boosinger & The Midnight Plowboys, Lauren and Lane, Lindsay Lou, Lillian Chase, The Lonesome Ace Stringband, Lori King and Junction 63, Mark Bumgarner, Mike Aiken Band, Mitch Greenhill, My Bubba, The Note Ropers, Nu-Blu, Pete & Joan Wernick, Peter Rowan, Piper Jones, The Po Ramblin’ Boys, Richard Ray Farrell, Richie and Rosie, Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley, Robin and Linda Williams, Rosie & the Riveters, Roy Book Binder, Sam Bush Band, Sarah Jane Scouten, Savannah Smith and Southern Soul, Scythian, Sideline, Smitty and the JumpStarters, Steve and Ruth Smith, String Madness, T. MerleFest is a celebration of "traditional plus" music, a unique mix of traditional, roots-oriented sounds of the Appalachian region, including old-time, classic country, bluegrass, folk, gospel and blues, and expanded to include Americana, classic rock and many other styles. The festival hosts a diverse mix of artists on its 13 stages during the course of the four-day event. All the other siblings from gen 2
I just don’t get around to playing these ones as much as I do Circle n’ Company, so I’m just gonna mass post them.
Kaatje Chalaini, daughter of Alex & Mack. Has two children with Don Lothario: Alexi and Chelsea. Master of CLUBS.
Jack Cruse, son of Jimbo & Mack. Has two children with Katana Griffin: Dagger and Sabre. He’s a master of all instruments and is doing great as a famous musician
Glibbet Cruse-Marxer, daughter of Justice and Mack. Has one child with Jdee: Vile Marxer, who was adopted by her half sister, Crowley, and her wife, Apple. It was a teen pregnancy and Justice and Mack were devasted. Crowley and Apple were more than willing to adopt the baby seeing as they had been trying to conceive on their own for quite some time. Glibbet had a rough time getting her shit together early on. But she’s a celebrity chef now, despite the fact that she’s still living with her sister, Kaatje. Circle would have invited her to live with him, but he already had a full house when Mack and Justice kicked her out.
Dany Cruse, daughter of Mack and Dave????? Has one child. Is currently unplayed right now. Will see how she turns out. She seems to be doing well.
Children unrelated to Mack:
Shumpsin Marxer, daughter of Justice and Joshua. She was besties with Kaatje growing up. It was almost hard to tell them apart. Together, they ruled the party scene. She currently has 5 children: Dunderson, Shloppin, Malarky, Montana, and Shunderson. The Marxer family is...really into creative names.
This is Shumpsin’s twin Crowley. She’s married to a woman named Apple Pie and has 3 children: Jesse, Jess and Vile (who’s birth mother is Glibbet.) She’s a secret agent, but all she REALLY wants to do is be a mom, and she’s doing that very well. Good job, Crowley
Katana Griffin, daughter of Dan and the late Robin Wright. She’s married to Jack and they have 2 biological children. Because She’s a genius and a scientist, she also cloned herself because...why not? So she’s also raising her clone, Falchion. She and Jack are two very esteemed sims.
Jdee, son of JD and Latoya Cutie-Patootie, was a teen dad when Glibbet gave birth to their daughter. Since then, he’s kind of fell off the map. Some day he’s spy, others say he’s a master criminal. Whatever he is, he and Glibbet still have a great relationship and keep in contact.
Okay that’s all of them. I’m tired. One day I might do a family tree so this will be less confusing.
