some httyd fans: it's reasonable to compare the books and the movies to each other as if the first film is a real adaptation.

Me: How to Train Your Dragon is the name of two entirely different dragon stories in the children's fantasy genre that happen to share some names, half a premise, and a theme or two. It is reasonable to compare them, but only in the same way that it's reasonable to compare the Tintin comic books to Raiders of the Lost Arc.

Most fandoms: The book was better than the movie.

Other fandoms: The movie was better than the book.

The httyd fandom: WE'RE SUPPOSED TO CHOOSE!??

#Dreamworks essentially bought the rights to use the httyd books as a random name generator #i know that's not how they meant to use those rights but that is how they ended up using them so #a common saying in the books fandom is that the first film is a bad adaptation. You're wrong it's not a bad adaptation #it's not an adaptation at all.#The first httyd film is just straight-up an original movie #it's the professional blockbuster equivalent of a fanfiction that strayed so far from the canonical events settings and characterizations #That the only reason it's still considered a fanfiction is because the author hasn't realized they've just written an original work #This isn't a bad thing by any means but it is very interesting #Now The third movie? THAT'S a bad adaptation #Or to be more accurate it's an original film whose ending is a bad adaptation of the ending of book 12 and prologue of book 1 #It makes the narrator reveal at the end of Never and Forever look GOOD by comparison #And I think that that narrator reveal was a total cop-out that brought down an ending #that i already thought was mediocre but enjoyable only because Cowell wrote it
