It all started with a Cab.
No, not a taxi. That's the wrong kind of cab. I'm talking about Cabernet Sauvignon. A Bordeaux grape that made it's way to America and is found to grow beautifully in California. Cab Sauv is the baby of Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc (both Bordeaux grapes). It's a big, bold, rich, fruity grape that offers high alcohol, high tannin and a full body. It pairs well with steak and also works as a cocktail wine. It's a great way to get into wine for beginners, and for more experience wine nerds it's a great varietal to collect and age. But I'm a little deep in the weeds. Let me slow it down...
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/dd1484640f57a1ce2d65dc37cd3d7599/0fa8c5cdc32d6997-8c/s540x810/a06d8c7449f36a4ad6443d8cc2a0d7d07885ae04.jpg)
Here's the quick story. I have been bartending since the day I turned 21. I had wanted to be a bartender since I was a kid and watched "Cocktail"...who didn't want to be Tom Cruise in that movie? Spinning bottles and making the girls smile and making a ton of money in the process. Who didn't want to move down to the islands and open a place called "Cocktails and Dreams"?
I worked at every bar I could. Dive bars, theater bars, restaurant bars, wine bars. I worked private events and catering events. Never did weddings. The opportunity just never arose. I also worked in a ton of restaurants and a server and a cook. I was a professional actor, which meant I was also a service industry professional. But it wouldn't become my career until around the year 2020. Some big cataclysmic event happened that sent my destiny in another direction. WINE!
But I think we need to start from the beginning.... Wine wasn't a big deal in my family. My aunt would drink Kendal Jackson, Turning Leaf, Franzia. And when I stole some I hated it. At the college parties when Boone's Farm and 2 Buck Chuck went around I understood it was swill and was only going to lead me to a severe hangover or upchucking and ruining the vibes.
When I started bartending, I was in this little dive bar in South Bend. My boss was an older woman who owned the place and I would pour her this awful white wine from a 1 liter bottle. That's all I really thought wine was. Just bitter grape juice with high ABV that I poured for people who had pour taste.
But there just had to be more to it! They wouldn't make movies like "Sideways" if wine wasn't a bigger deal. I had to keep exploring. I would go to the stores and try to find wine that I liked, but it felt like I reading another language. I mean...I was...but even the english words in wine culture seemed foreign and scary. I found a sweeter red wine that I managed to drink a couple bottles of, until I chugged one at a house party and turned the toilet bright purple. That was the end of that. I stuck with mixed drinks and beer for years after.
But then I moved to California and met a girl who would later become my wife. She grew up in a much different way than I did. She grew up in a well to do family, in California with a father who loved the wine world. My wife introduced me to wine by taking me to Temecula and Santa Barbara. I would go visit her parents with her and her dad would bring out bottles of California Cabs that were easy to drink. He wasn't looking to pair the bottle with food, it was a cocktail wine...and that's exactly what I was looking for.
I learned that I just needed to keep exploring the wine world. I still had no idea that I was going to dedicate my life to becoming a Somm. That wouldn't happen for another twelve to thirteen years. At this time I was just enjoying the fact that I was in California chasing my dreams and enjoying what I considered a sophisticated adult beverage. I was growing up and I was very proud to be around people who had more sophisticated pallets than I had.
As a budding sommelier, I don't drink as much California Cab as I used to. Southern Australia, Chile, Bordeaux, Washington state also offer some absolutely stunning expressions of Cab Sauv. But I still get together with my father-in-law and we pop open our favorite Paso Robles Cabs and share in the sense of nostalgia and comfort that these wines offer. He was truly the person who sent me on the path to love wine. He would deny this if you asked him, but it's true.
We went to Paso Robles and Santa Barbara multiple times. Each time I'd learn a little more. I'd watch some documentary, take James Suckling's Masterclass, read an issue of Wine Enthusiast. I was trying to understand this world. It would be a decade before I really got my sea legs and felt like I understood what the wine world was all about. (More on that later.)
I remember going to restaurants watching Bob pour over the wine book. I remember thinking, "Thank God he's doing this. I don't know what any of that means!" He was always trying to learn more about wine as well. The beauty of being a "professional wine guy" is that I am able to take us further down the rabbit hole than we thought we could go. The further down we go, the more fun it is. Having someone on the journey with you makes it all the more fun. My wife and mother-in-law enjoy the finer wines that come from it, though they seem to not be as excited about learning about malolactic fermentation and botrytis.
So, in closing, one question remains unanswered. What was the bottle that made me fall in love? What was that California Cab? It wasn't just one bottle. It was Soul Of A Lion from Dauo. I remember being up on Daou mountain, a light breeze blowing and the sun shining. A glass of the most beautiful Cabernet I had ever tasting resting in my hand standing with my future wife and father-in-law looking over the vines. "This feels like heaven."
Daniel Daou, founder of Daou, aimed to make the best Cabernet Sauvignon possible. He knew that he needed to find a place with the Calcareous Clay soils like Bordeaux. He found them in Paso Robles, CA where he became one of the first wine makers to bring and Cabernet Sauvignon clones. The result speaks for itself. If you ever get a chance to get a bottle, I recommend it. The feeling of that first sip is something I continue to chase. That chase used to be a hobby, but now it's my profession.

1. Renfield (2023)
Did I write a review of Renfield, an ode to the two Nic(k)s, or analysis of the Great Resignation? Yes, yes, and yes. Read whatever, in fact, I wrote at ZekeFilm. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7/10

2. SNL Round Up
Whether they’re spoofing my childhood toys, my young adulthood wedding commitments, or my love for the Jonas Brothers, the crew in Studio 8H has been keeping me laughing this Spring.
“Southwest Airlines Announcement” (4811 with Michael B. Jordan)
“The Big Hollywood Quiz” (4812 with Pedro Pascal) - A great example of how no one watches the same things anymore
“Waking Up” (4812)
“Protective Mom” (4812)
“Lisa From Temecula” (4812)
“American Girl Café” (4814 with Travis Kelce)
“Bridesmaid Cult Documentary” (4816 with Quinta Brunson) - I feel seen
"Weekend Update: Co-Worker Who's Extremely Busy Doing Seemingly Nothing on Returning to the Office” (4817 with Molly Shannon) - I feel attacked
“Sally O'Malley: Jonas Brothers” (4817)

3. Descanso Gardens
Because I can’t resist a botanical garden! Gardens are becoming a go-to attraction for me on vacations, and the Descanso Gardens in Los Angeles did not disappoint. The day we went was not too crowded but was impressive enough to earn a huge crowd—a hidden gem for LA tourists!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/bb9c4af550aeca970556187b731f272e/d593b6c795bc09ff-d1/s640x960/e0eabd8d12a12f9da6cba1ed0fddf692c8c01d87.jpg)
4. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Panel at PaleyFest
The gardens were lovely, but there were two other attractions that were the real reason for my visit to Los Angeles. The first was PaleyFest to see Amy Sherman-Palladino, Daniel Palladino, and the cast of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel! Just before the fifth and final season started on Amazon Prime, we heard Alex Borstein and Rachel Brosnahan share their mourning process for the show’s ending, Caroline Aaron and Michael Zegen reflect on what these roles have meant to them, and Tony Shalhoub crack up the crowd. (And who knew I would be so starstruck by him? When he came on stage I wanted to scream, “YOU WERE SO GOOD IN GALAXY QUEST!”) Check out SO IT’S A SHOW’s Instagram for more highlights from when my podcast co-host Kyla and I visited the Dolby Theatre (home of the Oscars!).

4. John Mulaney: Baby J (2023)
A full year ago I saw John Mulaney on his From Scratch tour, and now you can enjoy the set at home. His joke about not being interested in science “from magnets to ducks” did not make the cut (and alas now I can’t remember the setup for that punchline), but the other 90% of a show that made me laugh so hard I cried is preserved forever.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/16634a739a755b4c8c35a0de399cee47/d593b6c795bc09ff-67/s540x810/c8ae46d7057e79ab98fd9a62ac0e2eea7b38c0ce.jpg)
5. The Muppets. (2015-16)
Why did this gem only last 16 episodes? In this one-season single-cam sitcom, the Muppets are working on Late Night with Miss Piggy, a setting that could’ve produced comedy gold for years. With the frazzled Kermit producing, the Electric Mayhem as the in-studio band, and celebrity guests through the felt nose, I’m glad I checked out these 16 eps even though they ended on a cliffhanger. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like for Miss Piggy to date Josh Groban or to hold grudges against every blonde actress in Hollywood, you won’t want to miss it either.

7. Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. (2023)
Special in the way that the best coming-of-age movies are. I suspect Margaret’s insecurities about boys, bras, and besties will feel relatable to Gens Z and Alpha if for no other reason than this movie’s depiction felt scarily accurate to my own experience in the mid-2000s. I promise I will never start a review with the story of my first period ever again! At least, probably—at the rate we're going, it will never be apropos again. Read the full review at ZekeFilm. 2. The Academy Museum
The other reason I went out to Los Angeles: After years of pandemic-caused delays, I finally made it to the Academy Museum! Six floors of movie and Oscars history and memorabilia? You know I’m in my happy place, but casual movie fans will find something for them, too. Some of my favorite exhibits included the several-stories high Mount Rushmore backdrop used in North by Northwest, the gallery that used The Godfather to show each element of filmmaking, and the pianos from Casablanca. Fanny’s (named for Barbra Streisand’s character in Funny Girl) serves exceptional museum food, and I learned about deep cut filmmakers and movements I was only vaguely familiar with before I went. I’d give the Academy a gold statue for museum execution if I could!
3. Good Reads
A miscellaneous round up of good stuff I’ve read lately…
Final thoughts on 2022 Awards Season:
“How Avatar: The Way of Water Can Make $2 Billion and Still Feel Irrelevant,” Vox.com (2023)
“How Did We Let the Golden Globes Back In?” LATimes.com (2022)
Unexpected responses to Cocaine Bear:
“An Attempt to Define the ‘Good for Her’ Cinematic Universe,” Vulture.com (2023)
“The Case for Cocaine Bears,” Slate.com (2023)
Glitches in the Sports Industry Matrix:
“America’s Bad Bet on Expanding Legal Sports Gambling,” Vox.com (2023)
“Will Damar Hamlin’s Injury Change the NFL? Why a Safer Game Could Turn Away Fans,” LATimes.com (2023)
Watching trends that need to be fixed:
“Mumbling Actors, Bad Speakers or Lazy Listeners? Why Everyone is Watching TV With Subtitles On,” TheGuardian.com (2023)
“Television Is Going Exactly the Wrong Direction. I Know the Solution.” Slate.com (2023)
Explorations of our malaise at work:
“How to Care Less About Work,” TheAtlantic.com (2021)
“The Age of the Crisis of Work,” Harpers.org (2023)
All the ways—okay, just some of the way—social media is on the struggle bus right now:
“Why Every App Now Feels Like TikTok, but Worse,” NYMag.com (2023)
“How Elon Musk Turned the Blue Check Mark Into a Scarlet Letter,” Slate.com (2023)
“Commentary: If Twitter Finally Dies, Where Do We Find the Smart People?” LATimes.com (2023)
And even more miscellaneous good reads:

“I’ve Had It With Stunt Ice Cream Flavors,” Eater.com (2023)
“Clothes Make the Con Man,” NYTimes.com (2023)
“Hailey Bieber, Selena Gomez, and the Easter Egg-ification of the Hollywood Feud,” Vox.com (2023)
“Why Are TV Writers So Miserable?” NewYorker.com (2023)

4. Current Exhibits at the St. Louis Art Museum
My membership to the SLAM always pays off. In April I indulged in two special exhibits:
The Age of Armor, which showcases the history of armor and battle gear with an emphasis on suits of armor. The galleries did a great job explaining how the armor functioned and provided model pieces to try yourself, but you know my favorite part was the Black Panther and Star Wars costumes at the end!
Monet/Mitchell: Painting the French Landscape compares the work of Claude Monet and American expat Joan Mitchell, and it brought me back to my magical trip to Giverny last summer!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/bc55decf577d8c1714b1338cad7f9299/d593b6c795bc09ff-35/s540x810/30a002c51867db052cd648267a9873d3b4de6673.jpg)
5. The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex (1939)
Sumptous costumes and sets, Bette Davis doing the most acting, and Errol Flynn at his handsomest. This Queen Elizabeth I costume drama from Michael Curtiz is maximalist in aesthetic and romantic at its heart. Crowd: 7/10 // Critic: 9/10
6. Under the Umbrella: A Little Women Podcast (2023-)
Little Women superfans unite! Kate and Kelsey (friends and both teachers) are analyzing the book and film versions from every angle, and if you love the March sisters, Louisa May Alcott, or Greta Gerwig, they are going to be your new best friends.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/30da09874f6d47474ee5d81fad968222/d593b6c795bc09ff-cd/s540x810/cf870110db3bd3d9ab5d8a4af4038646129288e7.jpg)
7. Just Like Us: The Tabloids That Changed America (2022)
Last spring the Ringer Dish podcast did a deep dive into the ‘00s tabloids and their obsession with Brangelina, Bennifer, and ‘90s child stars gone wild—so basically everything I obsessed over in middle school. Bottom line: They probably didn’t make our world better, but those mags (and emerging online blogs and reality TV) sure tapped into parts of our brains that made them addictive. This eight-episode series challenges any assumption we have about about celebrity gossip being harmless—or frivolous.
Until May’s Round Up…
In spite of the current state of things, I’m still tweeting in denial as @tblake24. Come join me until this platform burns to the ground!
If you want real-time updates on what I’m watching and loving, you can also find me as @tblake24 on Letterboxd.

I interviewed my mom, Priscila Schmid. She grew up in Monterey, Mexico after she was born in 1971, and moved here to California when she was about 30 in the early 2000s. She is now 53 still happily living in southern California.
From ages five to her early teens, my mom attended a bilingual school of Spanish and English. Her parents believed it would serve her great benefits in her future (educationally and professionally) to know English. It improved her chances of getting a job and schooling would be more accessible. My great-grandmother was half Lebanese and half Mexican. She grew up in Texas so English was her first language. My mom and her grandmother would exchange written letters in English. This was another way my mom would practice her languages outside of school, but with family instead. As said in Culture is Ordinary, “To grow up in the family was to see the shaping of minds: the learning of new skills, the shifting of relationships, the emergence of difference language and ideas” (Williams, 92). Priscila was always familiar with the United States. She visited California every summer since she was twelve, attending summer camps until she graduated college when she became a counselor at the same destination. In 1988, my mom studied abroad for one semester at St. Mary’s College in the Bay Area, near Walnut Creek. She also practiced her English there, since she was constantly surrounded by Americans, including her roommate. Through her classes at this Californian school, she learned a myriad of ideas about American and college culture as a young adult in the 1980s. In 2001 she attended UCSD for school, however, she found a job that sponsored her TN visa. She stayed in San Diego for many years until she moved to Temecula with her now husband, my father.
The economic status of my mom’s neighborhood in the 70s-90s was upper middle class. My grandfather gained enough experience in his work to open his own factory which opened their financial horizons and opportunities. As my mom said, “things got much better financially for us, he was able to afford the best private high school and eventually college for us”, meaning she and her 2 siblings. When my mom moved to the States, she already experienced a monetary improvement concerning inflation. The inflation in Mexico is very high, so her money held more value in the United States. My mom argues that the Mexican Labor laws were much more favorable as compared to in the US. For example, if you are dismissed from a job in Mexico, the employers are obligated to pay the employee a certain amount depending on how long they worked there. My mom noticed that the credit interest rates were much more reasonable here than in Mexico. However, she noticed the response due to this was different. In America, citizens acquired their items more easily, creating a snowball effect of interest and financial irresponsibility. As said in After the Fact, the growing urban middle class recognized that education was paramount to securing a good job (Davidson and Lytle, 119). My mom believes that if people here were more aware and educated on financial responsibility and credit, the difference wouldn’t be so vast between debt here and in Mexico. The largest contrast she noticed in the economic aspect was the interest rate and its effect on peoples’ financial literacy, commonly spending more than their salaries would allow. She notices that this is due to the department of education in both countries.
My mom has lived here in California for about 20 years now with her husband and 2 children.

Why Choose a Pediatric Dentist for Your Child?
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/e04be4b61b43a145ad197dd7335990f9/bf45dd63ce47afa2-7d/s540x810/377bad91b87362f64580df7d0b45c09736e785f8.jpg)
Picking out the right dentist for your child is one of the most important decision since it is also related to their long-term health. While any general dentist can provide dental care for children, a pediatric dentist near you offers specialized care modified to the unique needs of young patients. From them developing their first tooth to their teenage years, pediatric dentists have the training and experience to handle the developing mouths of children in a way that ensures a positive and healthy experience.
Specialized Training in Children's Dental Needs
One of the key reasons to choose a pediatric dentist is the additional training they undergo. After dental school, pediatric dentists complete extra years of education focused on child development, behavior management, and treating conditions that specifically affect young mouths. This means that when you bring your child to a dentist in Temecula, you're entrusting their care to someone who truly understands how to treat children of all ages, from infants to adolescents.
A Child-Friendly Environment
A dentist near me who specializes in pediatric care typically designs their office to make children feel at ease. From colorful décor to engaging activities in the waiting room, pediatric dental practices are created to reduce the anxiety that children might feel about visiting the dentist. The goal is to make sure your child feels comfortable and relaxed throughout their appointment, which can help foster a positive attitude toward dental visits for life. This can benefit younger children who may feel nervous about dental procedures.
Tailored Preventive Care
Preventive dental care is critical during childhood, and a pediatric dentist knows how to implement these strategies effectively. Whether it's guiding parents on the best brushing techniques for their children or offering dietary advice to promote healthy teeth, pediatric dentists are experts in prevention. They also provide treatments like fluoride applications and dental sealants that protect young teeth from cavities. If you live in the area and are searching for a dentist in 92591, pediatric dental specialists are well-equipped to provide comprehensive care that grows with your child.
Managing Dental Anxiety
It's no secret that many children experience fear or anxiety when visiting the dentist. Pediatric dentists are given training in behavior management techniques that help ease these worries. Whether your child has special needs, is extremely nervous, or just needs extra reassurance, a pediatric dentist near me can adapt to the situation, offering a calm and comforting approach. This can make a huge difference in how your child views dental care and can set the foundation for stress-free visits in the future.
Early Intervention for Dental Issues
Children's mouths are constantly growing and changing, and early detection of dental problems is crucial. Pediatric dentists are trained to spot probable issues that could affect your child's development, such as misaligned teeth, bite problems, or issues with jaw growth. By addressing these problems early, a pediatric dentist in Temecula can help prevent more serious issues down the road. They also understand how habits like thumb-sucking or extended bottle use can impact your child's teeth, and they can provide guidance on how to curb these habits.
A Lifelong Positive Relationship with Dental Care
The ultimate goal of pediatric dentistry is to instill a lifelong commitment to oral health. By establishing trust and providing positive experiences early on, pediatric dentists help children develop good oral hygiene habits that last into adulthood. With gentle care and age-appropriate advice, a dentist near me who focuses on pediatric care plays a vital role in ensuring your child's teeth remain healthy as they grow.
In conclusion, choosing a pediatric dentist is a smart decision for your child's dental health. From specialized training to a child-friendly environment, a pediatric dentist in 92591 ensures that your child receives the best possible care in a comfortable and supportive setting. If you're looking for expert dental care for your little one, consider Elevate Dental Temecula, where your child's smile is our top priority.
