Bill Pence, pictured here with Stella Pence in a photo I snapped of the two in Telluride back in 2006 (on the day they announced their departure from their beloved Fest), died earlier this month. On Telluride’s 100+ year old Sheridan Opera House hangs a sign that reads simply, “SHOW.” The sign has been there since before the Pence’s founded the Telluride Film Festival with James Card & Tom Luddy in 1974. As I shared in Indiewire years ago, somehow the word came to represent this festival, having been used on the first fest poster and then etched onto the silver medallion that organizers award honorees each year. “It’s the essence of what we are all about,” Bill Pence told me at the Festival nearly twenty years ago, “We look upon ourselves as ‘The Show’.” Survived by his wife and partner Stella, Bill was a cinema showman dating back to his earliest days. A movie theater usher in Minneapolis, where he was born in 1940, Pence later lead the student-run film society at Carnegie Mellon in the 1950s, opened a movie theater in the 60s, distributed classic movies at Janus Films into the late 70s — in the years before the Criterion Collection — and eventually wove together a network of mountain town movie theaters in the American West, including the Sheridan Opera House in Telluride and the Egyptian in Park City, iconic home of Sundance Film Festival. Success led to the founding the Telluride festival in 1974 and he and Stella later launched the Santa Fe Film Festival, the Taos Talking Pictures Festival, and Pence was instrumental in getting TCM’s festival of classic films in LA off the ground. Quite a legacy. Telluride fest leader Julie Huntsinger praised Bill Pence’s work, in a statement to Indiewire, adding, “But most importantly of all, Bill was a great person. Kind and smart and a wonderful father and husband. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee last week signed a bill banning drag performances in front of children, passed alongside separate legislation to restrict gender affirming-healthcare for transgender youth. Rico Hot Springs

I went to Rico Hot Springs in the fall of 2020 during a trip to Telluride. The springs are now closed to the public unless you are a Rico resident -- which might SEEM disappointing, but given what it would be like to live in Rico, I think it's an acceptable trade-off. As luck would have it, I actually went to the springs with a Rico resident on a date. My date grew up in Rico -- a REAL place to be from -- and then returned early in the pandemic to enjoy cheap rent and his parents' company. Needless to say, I was VERY curious about what it was like to grow up in an old mining town of 195 people. I was also curious about growing up with a hot spring in your backyard. If it were me, I would have been there ALL of the time. Strangely, when he was a kid, he only went to the hot springs once -- wherein he saw his first set of boobs. (I would have thought that would have made him regular, but it did not!) This story was the first hint I had that Rico was a clothing-optional hot spring. Clothing-optional just means that the really hippie people go nude and everyone else wears a bathing suit. It never occurred to me that anyone would soak in the nude on a first date, but low and behold, that is exactly what happened. To get to the hot springs, you have to take a trail down to the river by a mining facility. It's not obvious from the road, so I was glad to be with a local. There are technically two hot springs at Rico - one is a tub installed in the 1970s that has been covered over with calcium to look like it is made of some kind of wax-resin, and the other is a 2.5-foot hole in the ground that is also covered in mineral deposits that make the water source look a bit like Jaba the Hut. The water sort of comes out of Jaba's armpit. Anyway, when we got to the springs, there was a large family there who were taking up most of the room. There were also a couple of family members sitting on the benches and watching the children play in the spring. It was tight, and I made a passing joke to my date that he should jump in nude to make everyone uncomfortable... which he proceeded to do. Amazing, right? Except I soon realized that he had been planning on soaking in the buff the whole time. To my surprise, a naked man was not much of a deterrent, so we spent the next half hour awkwardly whispering to one another and smiling at the 7-year-old who was definitely looking at his junk. (What goes around comes around!) After a half-hour of soaking, we got out, dried off, and hiked the half-mile back to his car. Somehow, on the drive between the springs and where my car was parked, one of my crocs and my bikini top fell out into his vehicle. Unfortunately, I didn't realize they were gone until I got back to my place in Telluride. I spent the next six weeks trying to get this guy to mail me my bikini and shoe. And I know that might seem thirsty or that I was intentionally leaving something behind to stay in touch, but I assure you, that was not the case. The bikini top was already a replacement for one I had left at Devil's Tower the summer before, and I was not about to lose it again without putting up a fight. Over the next six weeks, I continued to text this guy, and each time he promised to mail back both items, which never happened. So -- we are left with a question: what does a man who lives in Rico do with one croc and a bikini top?

Moab, Utah.

This post will be shorter than most, because our trip to Moab was a whirlwind 2-day weekend trip and we didn’t have the best experience, to be honest.

First piece of advice: DO NOT GO ON A WEEKEND. It was packed!! Same with Zion, which I’ll write about in a bit. National Parks are like theme parks in the time of COVID, so our experience was a bit tainted by how crowded and touristy it was.

Second piece of advice: If you are camping (especially on a weekend) get to the site at the break of dawn OR book 6 months in advance. Complicated, I know...but if you don’t do one or the other you will find yourself shit out of luck. We actually didn’t plan our specific dates of when we’d be in Moab until super last minute so it was too late to book anything through BLM (Bureau of Land Management) and we thought we’d just find a “first come, first serve” site. Consistent with our experience in Sedona (yes, we should have learned haha), none of the FCFS sites were available by the time we arrived in Moab, from Telluride, around 3 pm.  

Third and final piece of advice: BRING TONS OF WATER WITH YOU. It is the desert!

Our trip was also negatively affected by a bit of desert fatigue. This is a TOTAL first world problem, but since the first half of our trip was essentially all beautiful desert and national parks, we were a bit “over” the heat, the dryness, and the red rocks. Poor us, I know...

Where we stayed

So we were planning to stay at some of the AWESOME sites along Highway 128. This would be my recommendation for camping, because all these sites are along the Colorado River (and therefore so cool)! This site explains all the Moab BLM campsites, the first section shows the ones along the Colorado river and says whether you can book them in advance or if they are first come, first serve.

We almost could not find anywhere to camp at all. Most of the RV Park + Campgrounds were full and even most of the hotels in the area were full, so we were starting to get worried. We ended up pulling up to a KOA (Kampgrounds of America) campground and RV park and as a hail mary asked if there was ANYTHING they could do for us. Luckily, they had 1 RV spot available and said we could camp in it. It was $90, but we jumped on it. 

What we liked:

Bathrooms were nice, clean, and had showers

Sinks for washing dishes -- the most clutch thing about staying at a private campground

Pool

Camp store

Fire pit

What we didn’t like:

Small sites, close together

Being squeezed in between two RVs

Not exactly “in nature” but still nice to be outside and see the beautiful mesas around us

What we did + Recommendations

So we really were only in Moab for 2 nights and one full day. That ended up being fine for us, because we were kind of over the desert climate and tourists everywhere. I got SO many good recommendations from people but didn’t get to to most of it, so I’ll post it here. :)

Also, Moab sits between two very famous National Parks: Canyonlands and Arches. We only went to Arches this time, but if we had more time and energy we would have loved to check out both. 

Arches National Park:

Devil’s Garden - 7.8 mile hike loop or can go out to the double O arch and back, which is what we did (so not the whole 7.8 miles). This was packed when we were there in October and we did it on a Saturday which I would not recommend as it’s a popular one.

Delicate Arch - Probably the most famous “arch” in Arches National Park. 3 miles out and back but the way out is all up-hill and harder than it sounds.

Double Arch - More of a viewpoint than a hike, but another popular Arch in Arches (lol). 

Canyonlands:

Island in the sky district

Grand view pointe is a must 

Aztec Butte gives incredible views

Needles district - This is pretty far from Moab (about an hour and a half) but if you are doing Canyonlands separately this comes highly recommended

Moab 

The Spoke - Good cocktails, burgers, salads, etc. Come early to put your name down because the wait can be long.

Miguels Baja Grill - Authentic Mexican 

Moab Brewing - Nothing special but only brewery in town

Mill Creek Trail - A cool 3 mile roundtrip hike to a swimming hole in the canyon, right outside of Moab. I kind of wish we had done this but with our one day we thought we should go to Arches instead.

The Broadmoor | A Colorado classic, this resort features great amenities and is close to Pikes Peak, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, and Seven Falls. With plenty of room options, a bounty of restaurants to choose from, and activities such as golf, pool, and tennis, this is an easy staycation spot the whole family will enjoy.

Madeline | For a different ski scenery, Kaleigh recommends the Madeline in Telluride. This ski-in/ski-out Auberge property even has a private kids lounge and an ice rink. Bonus: This could easily pair up with a stay at Dunton Hot Springs.

A Full-Day Drive from Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley

Four Seasons Santa Fe | Kaleigh notes that she loves this property, “for families staying a little longer and looking to do more outdoor things.” Located just a bit outside the city, it has more of a resort feel.

Brush Creek Ranch | Head north to Wyoming and settle into a ranch if you’re looking for a place that has a larger feel than Dunton Hot Springs. This all-inclusive 5-star property sits on 30,000 panoramic acres and offers an authentic ranch experience for the whole family.

Lodge at Blue Sky | Park City is just a state away and this Western getaway is easy to call home for a few days. A contemporary, luxury resort, it’s considered an outdoor playground. Make a day of the area with nearby skiing and downtown Park City, which features some of the best local shopping and dining around.

St. Regis Deer Valley | With access to Deer Valley Resort right outside the doors, this mountainside property features fire pits, a Remède spa, and picturesque views of the Wasatch Mountains. The perfect place to be a tourist for a long weekend.

Amangiri | Saving the best for last, Kaleigh notes that this property, “would be the most amazing place.” The longest drive of the staycation round-up, it is worth every minute. This futuristic, luxury resort is set on 600 acres in the heart of Canyon Point in Southern Utah. Close to the historic Grand Canyon and Insta-famous Antelope Canyon, this stunning staycation is a sophisticated desert oasis.

Planning on a ski trip?

Whether you are planning on a day trip or a week long excursion everyone wants to try the best slopes at least once. Mountains in Europe or Asia might be harder for people to get to so, I have put together a list of the best ski resorts in North America.

10. Big Sky

Weighing in at the second largest ski resort in the United States, just behind Park City, this massive mountain park has a little bit for every skill level. Big sky boasts nearly 6,000 acres of land so there are plenty of blue and green trails along with a bunch of blacks thrown into the bunch. This mountain is also located in Montana with no other resorts near so it will be isolated and quieter than other resorts which is always a positive.

9. Whitewater

Located in Nelson British Columbia Whitewater is the perfect resort if you love powder and backwoods. This mountain is located in the perfect location so that it consistently gets fresh snow but, this can be a bad thing sometimes. Because there is so much snow in this area the resort can be hard to reach sometimes if it snowed the night before.

8. Steamboat

Steamboat is one of the lesser known resorts on the list. It is in Central Colorado with no interstates leading to it but, it is not how quite this resort is that outs it on this list, it is the snow. This mountain receives snowfall more consistently than any other resort in Colorado and there is nothing like waking up in the morning to fresh snow everyday.

7. Whistler-Blackcomb

These twin peaks have been famous for years for offering unbeatable conditions. They also have the advantage of being at a fairly low elevation so elevation sickness is not as common here as other mountains. Blue trails are where this mountain thrives but there is no shortage of more difficult trails as your skills improve.

6. Aspen

Aspen is one of the resorts that everyone has heard of so, of course it had to make this list. Even though it is so well known this resort tends not to get too busy except for holidays. This is probably because this resort is actually made up of four different mountains. there is plenty of space to spread out and you will never run out of trails to explore.

5. Vail

Vail is one of the most prolific resorts when it comes to skiing and snowboarding. It is probably the best maintained and is always striving to improve. this resort is on most peoples bucket list but, that doesn’t help with wait times. This mountain is notorious for its lift lines. This may be worth it for some people but i would try to wait until and off week to visit.

4. Alta

Just like Steamboat, Alta is not known by as many people but it makes this list because of it’s snow. This mountain possibly gets the most snow out of any other resort in North America. Alta is also one of the more family friendly resort that you can visit so its great for kids to learn.

3. Snowbird

Located in Utah Snowbird is actually the sister mountain to Alta. It receives similar snow levels but, this is not a family ski resort. The terrain is steep and difficult, providing the most seasoned boarders a challenge. Snowbird also has the advantage of being near an airport that has flights nationwide.

2. Telluride

Telluride is a massive mountain located in Colorado. You shouldn’t get bored on the mountain but if you do there is not shortage of activities in the town either. the food there is amazing and you won’t be able to go into all of the stores there are so many. It is an extremely well rounded resort.

1. Jackson Hole

Jackson Hole tops out the list. It is a must visit if you love back country skiing. this Wyoming mountain is to be known for it’s extreme difficulty and back country slopes. Nothing can beat a wide open mountain that you get to decide how you go down. Even though Jackson Hole is known for its difficulty the resort has done its best to carve out some smoother slopes to try and attract less skilled people as well.
