Also, "this film is for this moment in time where we need to see positive stories about #Blacklife, #Blackculture, #Blackmusic." - Rodrick Wimberly, Director and Executive Producer, "The Woodstock of House." • VIA www.NYADIFF.org #TheWoodstockOfHouse #ADIFF2022 OPENING NIGHT FILM FRIDAY, NOV. 25, 2022 7:30pm Red Carpet 8:00pm Doors Open - Screening followed by Q&A with director Rodrick F. Wimberly Venue: Cinépolis Chelsea 260 W 23rd Street, New York, New York "The Woodstock of House details the triumph of a genre of music that was attacked and seemingly destroyed by mainstream America in the late 1970s for being too black, too Latin, and too gay. 'Woodstock' explores the music's mutation, development, and re-birth as #HouseMusic by disaffected African American teenagers on the South Side of Chicago in an underground culture of marginalized, largely gay nightclub constituents. This is the untold story of the role of Chicago's Chosen Few DJs in the creation and popularization of the third-largest musical genre in the world. The documentary celebrates the 25th Anniversary of the annual Chosen Few Music Festival. Deemed the "Woodstock of House," this festival brings 50,000 people of different races, ages, sexual orientations, and class together in an environment of unity, peace, and love without conflict in one of the most violent cities in America, serving as an oasis of love in a sea of conflict... This is my grandmother, Ruby L. Floyd (1914-2018). Today, as I reflect on the courage and work of Martin Luther King Jr., I can’t stop thinking of my grandmother who encouraged me to post photos of Black history heroes all over my bedroom, while I was growing up. Today, she has been so heavy on my heart. I am thinking of her and all the people who fought and continue to fight for equal rights all over the world. In this article from the 1930s, my grandmother (at the time Miss Ruby L. Midgett) stood out as a singer who was chosen to sing a solo for First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. This was one of my grandmother’s greatest achievements. Greatest memories. At the time, she thought this moment would boost her career as a singer, it did not. Racism continued to rear its ugly head and it was very difficult for her to pursue her career. So, she received her Associates Degree from State Teachers college in Elizabeth city (now called something else). But after, she ended up cleaning white people’s homes. This broke her heart. Years later she was able to receive her Bachelors degree from Temple University and became a teacher. She was an incredible teacher whose lessons I still live by. Happy Martin Luther King Jr. day ❤️ #mlkday #martinlutherkingjr #tellblackstories #tellblackwomentheyaregreatmothers #love #blackhistory #ancestry #history #blackwomen #blacklivesmatter https://www.instagram.com/p/CY2TLTfvfh7/?utm_medium=tumblr

I’ve never been to #Chicago but I feel like I’ve learned so much after watching this docuseries on @hulu ! An emotional, powerful, insightful, fascinating series that illuminates the importance of LOCAL government AND the intricate, tedious, sometimes corrupt, and often maddening process of inspiring change (or just running for local office!). I highly recommend, ESPECIALLY to those politically minded, and to white folk who can be educated, not with vitriol but with real people, first hand accounts, and brutal honesty. Education IS the key. The final episode, filmed in 2020, helps to add some truly profound insight (while also elevating the series) by checking in with people directly impacted by Covid, seeing the challenges for our entire nation that still lie ahead, and touching base with the newly elected major who is dealing with unprecedented challenges in addition to the ones she’s encountered her entire life by being a black lesbian. Educational, Powerful, Troublesome, Inspiring stuff. Watch!! #BlackLivesMatter #blackstoriesmatter #tellblackstories #illinois #Hulu https://www.instagram.com/p/CJkqAbXh7zQ/?igshid=1scbx8o4g8ur8

If you are waking up to the horrors of police brutality, the school-to-prison pipeline, and/or the general terrorism experienced by non-white people in this country on a daily basis, I urge you to read this book and other books that are written from first-hand experience. Now is the time to highlight and lift up Black voices to educate ourselves and those around us. We must go to the source to understand the pain that is endured in this country that the media doesn’t show us. This book is one of the most beautifully written pieces I have ever read. It is honest. It is poetic. It is gut wrenching. It gives hope. It is told from the perspective of a woman who has suffered and has witnessed the suffering of all of her loved ones directly. She has dedicated her life to uplifting and protecting her community. She is working to make real change and impacting countless lives along the way. Please, if you are taking the time to educate yourself (and I hope you are), seek out Black stories. White people writing books about their experiences with racism is an abomination, in my honest opinion. You cannot unlearn your white supremacist beliefs and biases by limiting your experience to white voices and white messages. Please. Do better. We have to do better. Be uncomfortable. Examine your own existence. Be open. Be willing to learn, to change. This is the only way. ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼✊🏻🌈 #tellblackstories #saytheirnames #blacklivesmatter #blackdreamsmatter #blackfuturesmatter https://www.instagram.com/p/CDUS5qwp-DAxm3sD7sV5tdnruV6o4JD8igLXjE0/?igshid=9ml6722mwyrj
