im just kidding, literary discourse and media analysis is ALWAYS good and i don't think theres enough of it in fic spaces (it's always "it's just fanfic it's not that deep" YES IT IS i love thinking and having thoughts about everything). so here's my opinion that nobody asked for i just can't resist LMAOOOO

the great thing about fiction is that you (both reader and writer) can safely explore and experience things that you otherwise wouldn't be able to, including things that would be dangerous irl. joel and doc's relationship was never perfect (even pre-outbreak), they lose each other for years and both go through insane amounts of life altering, major trauma, and then find each other again. of course the relationship is going to be toxic this time around! the idea that finding doc again would have been enough to make him overcome having his only child murdered in front of him is insane to me and im SOOO glad you didn't go that route when writing.

i get what people are saying when they say it's too much/toxic/bordering on abusive for him to treat doc this way. it is toxic and it is abusive but it's also a very realistic depiction of a toxic relationship ("even though it's bad and he's bad and it won't last i'm choosing joel instead of moving on"). he isn't a good guy and people forget that because he's a walking HOT SINGLE DADS NEAR YOU! porn ad but he's robbed, killed, and tortured people, some of which didn't deserve it. it's never confirmed in canon that he didn't sexually assault people pre-ellie and pre-qz when he was out there. i don't even think it's IMPLIED that he never did these things (other than hating david). point is, he kinda sucks if you think about it too hard. in a different timeline every therapist in the country would tell joel and doc to go 100% no contact and joel would have an abilify prescription.

but alas, this is fiction! these people are not real and these situations exclusively exist as a combination of letters on a screen. i know it's technically a joel x reader series, but am i the only one who doesn't see myself as doc? she's a whole oc at this point (side note: what's everyones doc fc? mine is dianna agron slay). i think that could be another reason people are hesitant with how joel/doc are playing out; they see doc taking him back without him doing much begging and it takes them out of it because it isn't something they would do. which is fair and i have no rebuttal for that! there's no right or wrong way to read. keep doing you besties but plz don't take back a toxic lover just because they grovel omg

tldr joel/doc = toxic but they aren't real and also they live under a fascist regime during the apocalypse where italian 4 cheese cheez its don't exist so cut them some slack alright if i had to live in those conditions i would be worse than both of them

Finally posting the event!! 50 followers technically isn't that much but this blog really only started as a means for me to ramble about my fixations and whatnot, so it's nice that y'all hung around!

The idea of the event is that y'all can send in a character and a prompt from the yandere-themed lists I've got, and I'll write something short n sweet for it! Maybe a couple hundred words, maybe more if I really like the idea. I haven't written something in a while so this feels like a great opportunity for me to get out of writer's block and y'all to have fun!

Unless you've given me a really good idea, it'll mostly be the guys I'm comfortable with. There's no harm in trying but I am incredibly biased.

I WILL NOT write explicit sexual themes. I don't mind allusions to them but I don't do smut. A vague thing about how someone'd treat you I can tolerate but writing it out won't happen.

Character x Reader and Character x Character, Canon or OC are both allowed! If you ask for an OC, keep it to mine, preferably. I don't know how I feel about writing other people's characters yet.

I'm a multi shipper at heart and don't mind writing pairings I don't care for! The only thing I'm not too fine with are inherently romantic things regarding Neon or Nova with anyone else listed. While, like... I do consider everyone not including those two to be in their twenties, just don't know how I feel about "old enough to be your daddy" pairings, y'know?

Solace Chapter 1 Wip

Author's Note: so, hi! This is a sneak peek of my very very very long fan fic that I've been storyboarding for probably over two years now? The original lore doc with just story beats is about 25k words long so I hope it turns out actually good when I translate it all into actual writing!

Also, I'm taking so many creative liberties with this story it's not even funny. That's because while suspension of disbelief works in a game format, there are a lot of parts that feel either like a plot hole on my end OR very flat which wouldn't make for an interesting story. With that being said. I hope you enjoy my brain baby.

SUNDAY SPRING 1ST

The day is bright. So much brighter than Solace thinks they’ve ever seen. The city had plenty of sunlight, sure, but nothing like this. This view isn’t obstructed by intimidating skyscrapers or covered by a thin layer of smog.

Instead the view stretches as far as there is land. Wild flowers dot the surrounding area and tall grass brushes against Solace's calves but they welcome the unfamiliar feeling. They’re going to have to get used to it soon. Even if it feels ever so slightly like a bug is crawling on them.

They could make peace with nature by living in a beautiful place like this. A place where the air tasted salty and the sun felt like a dream.

Breathing in, Solace takes a second to listen to the sound of waves lapping at the edges of the island. Their island. The thought doesn’t even feel real yet.

Who would’ve guessed that after entering an essay contest about why they’d love to renovate an old ranch—and giving a down payment—they would own an entire freaking island! Two technically if they count the junk island they were told about. Certainly not them!

They had been so sure it was a scam. Down to the final ferry ride over. But when they touched down onto Verde Island with their boots hitting the old wood of the dock without a ransom encounter under their belt, they knew this had to be real.

This is it. Their dream is coming true right before their very eyes…and the eyes of the whole town. Taro, an ex-rancher so they’ve been told, whisked them around the islands right after they had stepped off the dock, making introductions to everyone they ran into. So many faces and names. They’re embarrassed to admit that it was all a blur and they didn’t quite cement them all to memory just yet.

“Hrumph,” the man who Taro introduced as Gannon, the islands’ carpenter, grunts as he rests the final boxes from the ferry down on the porch. Their porch. Solace nearly trills in excitement.

“Oh—” Solace says as they scramble over to the house, kicking themself slightly for getting distracted with the scenery while Gannon had been so helpful. “—Thanks so much Gannon. Seriously, it would’ve taken me forever to get all this together.” Solace grins as they scratch the back of their head sheepishly, their short hair bristling against their fingertips.

“S’no problem,” he says gruffly, though Solace can’t tell if it’s just his because his voice is so gravely or if he’s just tired. “You have anythin’ else you need help with?”

Solace shakes their head. “Nah, that was the last bit I think.”

They look around at all of their boxes. It’s weird how little they actually ended up bringing—how so few boxes could hold their whole life.

“Do you need help bringing yer things inside? Taro should be by with your keys soon,” Gannon says as he rolls his shoulders. Solace almost winces at some of the cracks he manages. “We can also just use the spare I got when I moved in your furniture a few days ago. M’sure Taro won’t be too upset.”

“Not too upset?” Solace asks as their brows furrow slightly, their smile not dropping yet. “Why would he be upset at all?”

“I dunno, something about wanting to be here for the reveal,” Gannon rolls his eyes, “if ya ask me, he shoulda been here on time if he wanted a reveal.”
