the rest of the tags were also good but for this part: it didn't! it is not an established trope in otome at all! this has been discussed pretty extensively even in japan and even among fans of villainess isekai, but there are a single digit numbers of arguable examples for inspiration (the rivals from tanbi musou meine liebe being the closest, and then rosalia from angelique, who isn't really a villainess and always has a happy ending as angelique's best friend, and mizuki from tokimeki memorial girl's side 2, who is just an ojousama and won't even be your romantic rival unless you go for the one boy she likes.) the vaguely medieval fantasy magical school is pretty much just (kind of) aping angelique, and the villainess trope comes from early shojo manga (already being pretty passe even there by the time the villainess isekai genre took off) and never had a significant presence in otome games (where named female characters are usually friendly, female bullies are usually faceless mob characters, and male love interests having established romantic attachments is rare.) it has never been an otome trope and as far as a lot of research has turned up on my part, there isn't a single example of a character in an otome game predating the genre that's even close to the boilerplate "ojousama bully acting as a consistent villainess who usually has a pre-existing romantic entanglement with a major male love interest and is terribly humiliated in the endings that don't favor her" character type
on top of visual novels/dating sims this was the other thing i was specifically thinking about when i made the post because the realization that otome games resembling the ones these series are claiming to parody just don't exist has never stopped making me lose my mind since i went looking for them and discovered this is a whole thing. people have started writing tongue-in-cheek otome villainess isekai webnovels about the fact that otome villainesses aren't real. someone who watches hamefura and thinks "wow! i'd love to play one of the games this is parodying!" wouldn't be able to. the whole genre is based on someone making up a guy. how did we end up here
my #1 elitist opinion is that if you are creating something that presents itself as a parody or subversion of a specific genre you should be thoroughly familiar with genuine examples of that genre
#otomegate#me i'm the person who wanted to play otome games with ojousama villainesses that's how i ended up finding this out#i went searching for them and just assumed it was something that had never made it over in localization#because the localization/fan translation scene for old otome is pretty bleak#but no it's not that none of them are in english it's that they were never there
