Vettaiyan Movie Review: A Conflicted Take on Extrajudicial Justice in Tamil Cinema

In Tamil cinema, cops are often shown as bold and action-oriented, using their guns without hesitation. This portrayal has been around for a long time and doesn't seem to be going away. That's why a film like Vettaiyan is important—it challenges this image. Indian cinema needs to rethink how it glorifies police officers, especially when it comes to encounter killings.

However, Vettaiyan has its own issues. The main character, Athiyan (played by Rajinikanth), is a trigger-happy cop who is shown as heroic for far too long, making it hard for the film’s eventual message to truly hit home.

Judge Satyadev (Amitabh Bachchan), who represents the moral side of the story, starts by questioning the idea of calling encounter specialists heroes. Meanwhile, Athiyan doesn’t wait for the law to take its course, believing in quick justice. His reasoning is that "justice delayed is justice denied." But as Judge Satyadev points out, "justice hurried is justice buried."

Vettaiyan struggles to find balance between these two views, leaving the film feeling a bit lost and confused in its message.

It all begins with you…

Muthu only vaguely remembers his parents.. his mother s saree smell.. a silhouette of his father as he left for work on his bicycle... his mother s glass bangles catching the sunlight as she swept the floor of their small house..

But he clearly remembers all the hardship his own brother, Raayan went through to bring up Muthu and his siblings.

Escaping to city with his brothers and sisters from the killers of his parents, the 17 year old Raayan, reinvented himself as their parent and struggled everyday in the big city to keep them fed and safe.

Unlike his younger sibling, Muthu was not totally ignorant to the sudden and traumatic changes in their lives. He couldn't concentrate on his studies and however much he insisted that he wanted to help his bother, Raayan, instead of studying, his cries fell on deaf years. He struggled throughout school and excelled in everything his brother detested.

For his always sober and serious brother, Muthu was a troublemaker and one who didn't appreciate all his efforts.

Manickam, Muthu s younger brother , however loved Muthu to no ends. Of course he respected Raayan, his eldest brother but it was Muthu who took care of Manickam at school, it was Muthu who stood up to bullies who called them orphans, it was Muthu who cooked for them when Raayan was away at work and took care of them when they were sick.

Durga, their youngest sibling was the apple of Raayan s eye. Maybe it was because he who named her or maybe because he had been taking care of her since she was 2 months old.. Durga bought out the fatherly feeling in him.

Between their small food truck business and college and work, it would almost seem as if they had finally found peace in their small little world, if not for Muthu s impulsive and quick tempered nature.

The party of the city they lived in was infamous for rowdy gangs and illegal activities. Especially 2 gangs that fought for dominance.

The Sethu and Dorai gangs.

Unbeknownst to the quiet siblings, trouble was brewing between the gangs and each was plotting against the other.

As luck would have it, Muthu found himself in the midst of the altercation between the two gangs and in his drunken stupor, ended up killing the son of the Dorai gang leader.

Fearing retaliation from the Dorai gang leader, the three brothers Raayan, Muthu and Manickam sneak into Dorai s house and murder him without anyone knowing.

Suspecting the involvement of Raayan and his brothers, Sethu offers them a truce. The brothers either join his gang or one of the brothers marry his sister, Sruthy.

Raayan commands his brother , Muthu to marry Sruthy, knowing well of Muthu s love for his childhood sweetheart, Meghalai, as it was Muthu who bought this upon the family.

Unable to disappoint his brother again, Muthu reluctantly agrees.

Hence starts the story..
