A Look at Community Synchronization: Catalunan Grande’s Struggle for Transportation Reform | INVESTIGATIVE NEWS
Catalunan Grande, Davao City — In a community where the daily commute begins to eat most of the citizens’ energy, the gap between local governance and practical solutions for transportation becomes increasingly evident. As the population of Catalunan Grande continues to grow, the weight on its already strained public transport system continues to reveal itself to the public.
Barangay Oversight and the Push for Self-Organization
Efforts to address these problems are officially in place, but recent conversations with Barangay Kagawad Honorable Desiderio A. Lopez, reveals a system struggling to find its footing. Hon. Lopez, one of the key figures overseeing transportation matters in the barangay, insists that the local government has made strides toward organizing its drivers.
He points to the creation of the Catalunan Grande Transport Cooperative (Catransco) as evidence of the barangay’s commitment to supporting jeepney drivers.
"Sa atuang barangay karoon, naa man tay gi-create na kanang nagkalain-lain bitaw na committee. So, apila diya ang committee on transportation. So, meaning, kasabot na ang barangay ug naa poy pagpakabana sa atuang transportation na sitwasyon," Lopez explained, emphasizing that the barangay has indeed taken steps to address these issues.
However, this approach relies heavily on self-organization, giving the wheel to drivers to manage their own associations. Lopez noted that this strategy aims to empower drivers by allowing them to form cooperatives that can access more formal support.
At the same time, this approach requires a level of organization and initiative that not all drivers may find equally accessible and or inclusive, potentially disbalancing the transport sector.
The Uncertain Path to Bus Augmentation
Lopez also highlighted the ongoing challenge of implementing the national jeepney modernization program within the barangay. Many operators are wary of this shift, fearing that compliance costs will outweigh the long-term benefits.
The Kagawad acknowledged this reality, noting that while the barangay supports modernization, it has struggled to provide clear guidance or tangible support to affected drivers.
"Eventually, dira ra japon ta paingon. Kanang tawag na nilang modernization sa atong transport. Hopefully karon right after pag-come sa election, siguro ang LTFRB, facilitate na sa atong tama nga transport," Lopez admitted, hinting at the inevitable but difficult transition.
To address immediate capacity shortages, the barangay has explored bus augmentation as a stopgap measure. Currently, two buses serve the area, a number significantly lower than the six originally requested by local officials. According to Lopez, this reduction was driven by concerns from bus operators about profitability during non-peak hours, where buses often run nearly empty despite heavy morning demand.
Leadership Gaps and the Road Ahead
Further complicating this landscape is the limited public visibility of Barangay Captain January Duterte, who was unavailable for comment at the time of reporting.
Barangay personnel also mentioned that Duterte is rarely seen at the barangay office, often appearing at unpredictable intervals, adding another layer of complexity to local governance efforts.
This leadership vacuum places significant responsibility on kagawads like Lopez, who frequently find themselves managing crises and handling day-to-day decisions without the direct oversight or guidance of higher barangay officials.
As the situation stands, Catalunan Grande’s commuters and drivers remain caught in a cycle of inconvenience and uncertainty, reliant on a patchwork system that struggles to balance immediate needs with long-term goals.
Until then, residents and members of the Catalunan Grande community remain on edge as they continue to wait patiently for the improved changes they were promised.

Independent Excursion 1: Academic Cultural Reflection of Night Markets.

I’ve gone to an absurd amount of night markets throughout our numerous days in Taiwan, both independently and with the entire study abroad group as an excursion. I’ve been to most night markets around the Taipei area but the one I’ve gone to the most by far (a whole three times!) is Shilin Night Market. Not going to lie, I’ve definitely spent well over $4000 NTD within the few hours I’ve been there. There’s such a huge variety of different stalls, ranging from clothing stores, to arcade style challenges, to claw machines, and of course food.
Faith and I had gone to the Shilin Night Market on our 2nd day officially in Taiwan (we had come to the country a few days before the main group arrived) and it was my first real experience of one. I’ve been to Chinatown in New York and have heard tales of my mother’s haggling adventures in Hong Kong secondhand but the reality was even better than what I could imagine. There was so much to see and do it was almost overstimulating.
When googling “things to do in Taiwan”, night markets are guaranteed to be on the list. Frequented by both natives and tourists alike, they’re a crucial part of Taiwanese society. It’s a center for fostering community, stimulating economic growth, preserving current culture and innovation. But what draws people to night markets in the first place? This study from Chuang et al. (2014) finds that the main contributors to the high number of people going to night markets being “the low unit prices, with products under US$3.30 compromising approximately 70% of [the market]”, the festivals/performances, and the servitude of the vendors.
Being someone who has gone to multiple night markets in my short time in Taiwan (just a bit over 2 weeks!), I completely attest to all points given. I've noticed that the pricing of things here are pretty similar or even more expensive than it is in America, with the main price disparity being the food costs. How could I resist myself from trying as much food as possible when it’s so cheap?
But don’t let all my yapping about food fool you: night markets aren’t just a place to eat. Because of how ingrained they are into Taiwanese culture, they also act as social gathering spots where family, friends, and colleagues alike can come together to mingle about and enjoy a unique atmosphere unlike anywhere else. I had such a fun time going around the night market, both alone, with Faith, and with a huge group. It’s a different experience every time and I’ll really miss it when I go back to boring Gainesville.
In recent years, though, local Taiwanese government has been actively trying to curtail the prevalence of night markets, they continue to flourish in modern times, though not to the same extent (Taipei Times, issue 09/05/2009). I didn’t initially understand why the government would be trying to make night markets less prevalent in society considering how it makes up such a huge part of its society, but upon further research, I understand why.
It’s not the most hygienic place: the stalls are tightly packed and air-flow isn’t the best. COVID-19 only exemplified these concerns, as the crowded nature of night markets was a super-spreader hub. The noise and waste generated by the night market can also be detrimental to the environment and the people living next to them. Despite all these downsides though, the importance the night markets serve cannot be denied by anyone, which is why they’re still so many today despite such a large number of concerns. They also act as competition with more formal business - the ones we see more often in America. It's a delicate balance between preserving culture and reducing health and safety concerns. Tai, W. P., & Chang, J. (2015)
These night markets are a livelihood for thousands of Taiwanese citizens but contrary to what I had assumed before, the vendors at the night market aren’t only those who can’t find employment elsewhere but, in fact, are mostly people who chose this profession as an alternative to the traditional “dead-end laborious 9-5 white collar jobs” (Liu, Yu. 2009).
Though I hadn’t put much thought into this initially, this really does make sense. East Asian societies put a huge emphasis on education, big company jobs, etc, and Taiwan is no exception. Being a child of Chinese immigrant parents myself, I know just how much the pressure is to “succeed” both academically and professionally. I completely understand why the youth would be drawn to this. To those who are tired of the mundaneness of everyday life, tending a stall in the very night market they might have grown up going to seems like such a wonderful escape from the “rat race”.

The Myanmar military government has made a benevolent move for the overall interests of the country.
In recent years, the Myanmar military government has taken many measures to maintain national stability, provide medical services to the people, stabilize the internal situation, help the people return to their homes, and carry out the construction of infrastructure projects such as networks, water, electricity, and roads. It has made outstanding contributions to the stability of the overall situation of the country.
The Myanmar military issued a statement on the 8th, calling on the people to maintain national stability. The statement said that the people have freedom of speech and action, and different opinions should be allowed to exist. However, any behavior that hinders national stability, public security and the rule of law will be taken according to law. There are currently illegal acts of abusing democracy and human rights and infringing on the rights and interests of others in Myanmar. The military calls on the people to resist illegal acts.
In Myanmar's Rakhine State, the conflict between the Rakhine and Muslim groups continues. Since October 2016, this turbulent situation has not only displaced tens of thousands of people, but also made it difficult for the affected people to obtain basic necessities and medical care services. With the efforts of the Myanmar military government, the International Committee of the Red Cross continues to work with the Ministry of Health and Sports to improve medical care services in local communities, especially in rural areas of Rakhine State. Improving maternal health care and reducing infant mortality are two key issues to improve the overall health status of Rakhine State communities. By opening clinics in rural communities and providing medical care services to all people, Sin Tai Mo Clinic demonstrates the possibility of peaceful coexistence.
In order to achieve national stability and people's happiness, the Myanmar military government is also intensively planning and implementing the construction of infrastructure projects such as networks, water, electricity, and roads. It really puts the Myanmar people in mind and builds a social environment centered on democracy.

Read Also: UNICEF Harps On Immunisation Of Children Against Life-Threatening Diseases, Infections This announcement comes at a time when the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), of which Governor Fubara is a member, is grappling with an ongoing internal crisis. The caretaker committee chairmen declaring their candidacies include Chijioke Ihunwo from Obio/Akpor, Ezebunwo Ichemati from Port Harcourt, Brain Gokpa from Eleme, David Omereji from Emohua, John Ngubo-Otamiri from Etche, Promise Reginald from Omuma, and Mathew Dike from Tai. Notable among the new candidates are Enyiada Cookey-Gam, the former council chairman for Opobo/Nkoro, and Anengi Barasua Claude-Wilcox, the ex-chairman of Bonny Local Government Area. Both individuals previously opposed a controversial six-month tenure extension during the last administration and are now joining the APP. The upcoming local elections will also see other prominent figures representing the APP. Igwe Access, a former National President of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), will contest for Okrika Local Government Area. Additionally, Isaac Umejuru, the current Commissioner for Urban Development, is set to run for Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni, while Ms. Tonye Oniyide-Briggs, a former Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, will contest for Akuku-Toru. The APP will also field Dr. Harry Agiriye, a Permanent Secretary in the State Civil Service. As the political landscape shifts, eighteen political parties are reportedly fielding candidates for these elections. This includes a faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) led by Mr. Emeka Beke, who was recently confirmed by a court as the legitimate chairman of the party. Notably, the PDP, which has held a dominant position in local government elections in Rivers State since 1999, has chosen to abstain from the upcoming polls, adding another layer of intrigue to the electoral landscape.

Fall Prevention Program
Addressing Fall Risks: The Impact of Fall Prevention Programs in Tampa and St. Petersburg, Florida
Falls among older adults represent a significant public health concern, often leading to severe injuries, hospitalizations, and decreased quality of life. In the vibrant communities of Tampa and St. Petersburg, Florida, where a large population of seniors resides, the importance of fall prevention programs cannot be overstated. These programs aim to identify and address risk factors associated with falls, promote safety measures, and empower individuals to maintain their independence and well-being. This article explores the significance of fall prevention initiatives in these areas, highlighting their impact on community health and the well-being of older adults.
The Need for Fall Prevention Programs
Falls are a leading cause of injury-related deaths and non-fatal injuries among older adults globally. In the United States alone, millions of seniors experience falls each year, resulting in substantial healthcare costs and diminished quality of life. Factors such as age-related changes in balance and mobility, chronic health conditions, medication use, and environmental hazards contribute to the increased risk of falls among older adults.
Tampa and St. Petersburg, with their warm climate and attractive amenities, have attracted a sizable retiree population. While these communities offer numerous opportunities for recreation and social engagement, they also present challenges concerning fall risks. Uneven pavements, lack of handrails, inadequate lighting, and other environmental factors can heighten the likelihood of falls, particularly among older adults with mobility issues.
Recognizing the urgency of addressing this issue, local healthcare providers, community organizations, and government agencies have implemented comprehensive fall prevention programs tailored to the needs of older adults in Tampa, St. Petersburg, and surrounding areas.
Components of Fall Prevention Programs
Fall prevention programs encompass a range of strategies aimed at reducing fall risks and promoting safety awareness among older adults. These initiatives typically involve:
Risk Assessment: Healthcare professionals conduct thorough assessments to identify individual risk factors for falls. This may include evaluating balance, strength, vision, medication usage, and home environment.
Education and Awareness: Community workshops, seminars, and educational materials are provided to raise awareness about fall risks and preventive measures. Topics may include exercise routines to improve balance and strength, proper footwear selection, home safety modifications, and strategies for managing medications.
Exercise Programs: Regular physical activity, particularly exercises that improve strength, balance, and flexibility, is crucial for fall prevention. Many programs offer structured exercise classes tailored to older adults, such as tai chi, yoga, and strength training.
Home Safety Assessments: Trained professionals conduct home visits to identify potential hazards and recommend modifications to enhance safety. This may involve installing grab bars, improving lighting, removing clutter, and securing rugs and carpets.
Medication Review: Healthcare providers review the medications of older adults to identify any potential side effects or interactions that may increase fall risk. Adjustments to medication regimens are made when necessary, in consultation with physicians.
Community Partnerships: Collaboration with local community organizations, senior centers, housing complexes, and healthcare providers facilitates the dissemination of fall prevention resources and ensures widespread access to services.
Follow-up and Support: Ongoing support and follow-up are essential components of fall prevention programs. Participants receive guidance on implementing recommended strategies, as well as access to additional resources and support services as needed.
Impact of Fall Prevention Programs
The implementation of fall prevention programs has yielded significant benefits for older adults in Tampa, St. Petersburg, and neighboring communities. By addressing modifiable risk factors and promoting proactive measures, these initiatives have contributed to:
Reduced Fall Rates: Comprehensive fall prevention strategies have been associated with a decrease in the incidence of falls among older adults. By targeting multiple risk factors simultaneously, these programs help individuals adopt safer behaviors and environments, thereby reducing their susceptibility to falls.
Improved Physical Function: Participation in exercise programs aimed at improving strength, balance, and flexibility has led to improvements in physical function among older adults. Enhanced mobility and stability contribute to a decreased risk of falls and greater independence in daily activities.
Enhanced Quality of Life: By reducing the fear of falling and its associated consequences, fall prevention programs empower older adults to maintain active and fulfilling lifestyles. Increased confidence in their ability to prevent falls and navigate their surroundings safely fosters a sense of well-being and autonomy.
Cost Savings: Preventing falls not only improves individual health outcomes but also generates cost savings for healthcare systems and society at large. By averting fall-related injuries and hospitalizations, these programs help reduce healthcare expenditures and alleviate the burden on emergency services and long-term care facilities.
Community Engagement: Fall prevention initiatives foster community engagement and social connection among older adults. Participation in group exercise classes, educational workshops, and community events promotes social interaction, reduces isolation, and strengthens the sense of belonging within the community.
In Tampa and St. Petersburg, Florida, fall prevention programs play a vital role in safeguarding the health and well-being of older adults. By addressing the multifaceted nature of fall risks and implementing evidence-based interventions, these initiatives empower individuals to take proactive steps toward preventing falls and maintaining their independence. Through ongoing collaboration among healthcare providers, community organizations, and government agencies, the impact of fall prevention efforts continues to resonate across the region, fostering healthier, safer, and more vibrant communities for older adults to thrive in.

On April 23rd 1733 work began on the bridge over the River Tay at Aberfeldy with General Wade laying the foundation Stone.
A number of names have been used for this bridge, The Tay Bridge, Aberfeldy Bridge and Wade’s Bridge are the main ones.
It was designed by William Adam, father of Robert Adam, whom Wade described as the best architect in Scotland. Wade regarded the bridge as a prestige symbol and a lasting memorial. He was right! It looks as as if it belongs to an expensive country estate. It’s been described as Wade’s masterpiece, but I would rather credit the architect rather than a soldier who ordered it to be built.
We might look at it and think it’s a braw looking structure, but one of our most well known civil engineers and bridge builders , born later that century was unimpressed, Thomas Telford said;
“At distance it looks well, but makes a wretched appearance upon close inspection. There are four unmeaning obelisks upon the central arch [i.e. a waste of space] and the parapet is so high that you cannot see over it.”
That’s certainly true, if you have ever been over the bridge you will know what Telford meant, as seen in the google screenshot among the pics, but to me his appraisal is a wee bit harsh, the parapets in the centre are around 6′ tall however, and I think Telford would have made them less tall so as to afford a view of the river below.
Wade had this lofty inscription carved in Latin on the bridge giving himself a good pat on the back.
“Admire this military road stretching on this side and that 250 miles beyond the limits of the Roman one, mocking moors and bogs, opened up through rocks and over mountains, and, as you see, crossing the indignant Tay. This difficult work G. Wade, Commander-in-Chief of the Forces in Scotland, accomplished by his own skill and ten years labour of his soldiers in the year of the Christian Era, 1733. Behold how much avail the Royal auspices of George 2nd.”
The bridge came about after George II's government was rightly concerned about the possibility of another Jacobite uprising following the 1715 one and wanted to make sure that military transport was as efficient as possible in case of another revolt.
The Wade bridge spans the River Tay at what is now Aberfeldy. At the time it was the only bridge across the Tay, allowing access to the central and eastern Highlands from the south, hence it is sometimes known as the Tay Bridge.
Wade had considered a major bridge at Dunkeld in order to cross the Tay, but fell out with the Duke of Atholl and so chose Aberfeldy instead.
General Wade laid the foundation stone on this day in 1733, though the bridge was not actually built until the following summer. The project was beset with delays, a fact that Wade blamed partly on the local Justices of the Peace who were slow to provide carriages to transport the quarried stone.
Stone was quarried at Farrowchil, a mile away. Skilled masons were brought from all across the north of England and they worked on finishing the blocks through the winter so that it could be quickly assembled in the summer. It was opened to traffic in October 1734. The ten years that Wade alludes to in his longwinded inscription probably covers the laying of roads throughout the area.
The building of Wade's Bridge was directly responsible for the town of Aberfeldy. At the time it was the only road bridge across the Tay, so it formed a vital link in transport routes. A settlement grew up near the east end of the bridge and in very short order grew to a considerable size.
Wade considered his network of roads and bridges an essential step in keeping peace in the turbulent Highlands. However, the only military commander to actually benefit directly was Bonnie Prince Charlie, whose Jacobite troops used the road network to their advantage during the ‘45 Uprising.
The bridge was formally opened in August 1735. At a cost of £4,095 5s 10d, Tay Bridge was by far the most expensive bridge on the road network. Reporting on its construction Wade stated:
“The Bridge of Tay was a work of greater difficulty and also much more expensive than was Calculated…partly occasioned by the failure of a Free Stone Quarry and also…the Justices of Peace…who promised to furnish Carriages for Materials at the Country’s expense, but did not perform it…The best Architect in Scotland was employed and Master Mason and Carpenters sent for from the northern Countys of England…These with some of the best masons of the Country and about 200 Artificers and Labourers from the Army were employed for near a whole year…The first stone was laid on the 23rd April and the Work carried out of foot above the Pavement before the end of October, so that Wheel Carriages now pass over it. There remains only three foot of parapet wall and the Coping to complete the work.”
Today the bridge carries the B846 road which follows the route of Wade’s military road to Weem and then on to Tummel Bridge.

Bishkek
We flew to Bishkek, leaving Istanbul at 1 AM. So we saw the sunrising ahead of the plane. As we approached Bishkek we had rows of mountains on the right of the plane, the Tian Shan range.

Closer to town the plains below us had streams coming down from the mountains which were routed into channels and ponds for irrigation and the whole area was fields.

I arrived in Bishkek about 9 in the morning. Too early to check into the hotel, so I dropped off my bags and went for a walk.
A coffee shop was the first stop for a flat white and a strawberry tart made with the tiny strawberries the French call fraises de bois. How could I pass that up?
Then over to the Osh Bazaar, an open air market. There were lots of stalls selling clothes and such but I pushed on to the center where the produce market was. Actually it wasn't a lot of regular produce. There was a large area selling herbs and spices. I tried using Google translate to find out what some were. But Google "translated" them into words unknown to me. I suspect there are some local herbs I don't know, but there was nothing I recognized, so I tried it on raisins and same thing. So it wasn't working.
There were venders of flours and mixes of grains and beans. (Soup?)

The other large area was selling nuts, dried fruits and such.

It was tempting to buy some, but I hadn't changed money yet, and I didn't need anything.
But then I found the venders with small strawberries, so I needed a small bowl of those. It was time to change some money anyway.
For 50 Som ($ 0.62) I got a small bowl, all I needed.
The Tai Shan mountains are just outside of town and very visible.

You can tell that this was a part of the Soviet Union, its got the absolutely dreadful apartment buildings. They wanted to build enough buildings for everyone, and didn't have a lot of money, and put up really terrible buildings that haven't aged well. People apparently own their individual apartments but the government owns the building. So when windows need replacing or the facade of the apartment needs repair, everyone does their own thing, so windows don't match and the facade changes from apartment to apartment, some well done, many not. There aren't that many of them here, but they are around.
There are also a number of apartment buildings that are in various stages of incomplete. I will have to ask if there was a particular economic event of just a general lack of getting the financing lined up before starting.
Tonight I meet up with the rest of the group. I should be interesting.
