Last night I saw part two of Geffen Playhouse’s production of “The Inheritance” by Matthew Lopez. Part one, two weeks ago, stunned the audience at the end, and sent us out of the theater in a state of shock and awe. Last night’s second half of the (7-hour) play was also brilliant. There are many moving moments throughout both parts of the play. The show owes a big debt to Tony Kushner’s “Angels In America,” because of its epic scope, political ambitions, and gay themes. The intergenerational relationships of gay men and our obligation to pass along what we’ve inherited from our elders provides the engine for this daring play. That and the inspiration of E. M. Forster’s novel “Howard’s End.” (And, in a way, his posthumous novel “Maurice.”) Forster also appears as a character in the play, more in Part 1 than Part 2 though. He’s played brilliantly by Bill Brochtrup (”Hill Street Blues”). Wild sex scenes, drug-fueled Fire Island orgies, and nudity mean it’s not for the easily shocked. Don’t take a prudish granny or the toddlers to this one. The little old ladies sitting down the aisle from me were having a pre-show conversation about men in their families whom they thought were, or might be, gay. It was fun to listen to them describe how closeted grandsons never ever came out to them. If only the closeted grandsons knew grandma was seeing this show they might be surprised.  Tuc Watkins (”Boys In The Band,” “Uncoupled”) gives a great performance in part two. Please nominate him for Sexiest Man Alive, especially with that beard he’s sporting for this show. The whole cast, really, is phenomenal. Occasionally someone trained as a TV actor will have trouble projecting beyond the first row, so try to sit close unless you’re wearing one of the theater’s hearing devices. I worried about people up in the balcony being able to hear the barely audible dialogue in some spots. Ethel Merman is not among the cast. Also, if you see parts one and two on different days, there’s a chance they’ll have cast changes. In this age of COVID, you never know. I’d have preferred to see the same cast in both parts, but the two substitutions we had last night were fine. It’s a different feeling, different chemistry, in the show with new faces but still astounding. If I’d been able to, I’d have loved seeing parts one and two on the same day: matinee for part 1 and evening show for part 2. It’s how I saw “Harry Potter And The Cursed Child” up in San Francisco in 2020.

If you live in Southern California, don’t miss "The Inheritance.” It’s one that you’ll hear a lot about later and regret if you miss it.

₦70,000 Minimum Wage: Governors Setting Up Implementation Panels Weeks after President Bola Tinubu's enactment of the N70,000 minimum wage law, only a few governors have established committees to ensure its implementation. While some states have taken significant steps towards adopting the new wage, others are still in the planning stages or facing challenges. States with Established Implementation Panels for the ₦70,000 Minimum Wage Kano State: Governor Abba Yusuf has launched a State Advisory Committee to oversee the implementation of the new wage. The committee, led by Usman Bala, the Governor’s Special Adviser on State Affairs, is tasked with delivering actionable recommendations within three weeks. They will employ data analysis to develop a feasible plan for the state's implementation. Kwara State: Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq has inaugurated a consequential adjustment committee to address the new minimum wage. The committee will focus on assessing various factors and crafting an agreement that safeguards workers' interests. The formation of this committee was confirmed through a statement released via the Kwara State government’s X handle (@followKWSG) on August 2.   Pay Attention To: Minimum Wage: List of Nigerian Governors Who Say They Can’t Pay N70,000   Borno State: Governor Babagana Zulum has set up a committee to review and implement the new minimum wage. The committee includes representatives from the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and other stakeholders, alongside state government officials. Jigawa State: Governor Umar Namadi’s administration has formed a committee to develop a framework for implementing the N70,000 wage. Chaired by Head of Service Muhammad Dagacire, the committee also includes Garin Gabas as the secretary. The committee’s formation was announced by Hon. Sagir Musa, Commissioner for Information, Youth, Sport, and Culture. Abia State: Under Governor Alex Otti, Abia State is making strides towards implementing the new minimum wage. The government is collaborating with the NLC to finalize payment details. Otti affirmed that progress is being made and a committee is already in place. Delta Govt Takes Action to Implement N70,000 Minimum Wage   States Still in Progress Reports suggest that Ogun and Ondo states have also established implementation panels, though details are scarce. Oyo State has set up a committee a few months ago to advise the government, according to Commissioner for Information Dotun Oyelade.   In Osun State, spokesperson Rasheed Olawale has indicated that a committee will be formed soon. The Delta State government, as confirmed by Commissioner for Information Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, also plans to establish a committee to handle the new wage implementation.   Financial Constraints and Challenges Some governors, including Alex Otti and Abba Yusuf, have cited financial constraints and limited federal allocations as barriers to implementing the new minimum wage. Despite these challenges, there is a general commitment among governors to address workers' welfare and prioritize the new wage.   As states continue to grapple with the logistics of implementing the new minimum wage, the focus remains on ensuring that workers receive their due compensation amidst various administrative and financial hurdles.
