today has mostly been about companions and gosh i love each and every one of them. i've officially recruited the whole team and spent a bit of time with all of them.

before i got to taash, i did some stuff with davrin, and had a little emotional moment over a gameplay mechanic because it hurt to use neve's ability while she wasnt with me :(

i wouldnt have been surprised if it was unavailable until she returned, so while this is probably just a matter of keeping the gameplay straightforward and not locking out a quest until later, it felt like it meant she was still with us in spirit T_T i can be sentimental sometimes

have been rotating davrin in my mind a bit because he was initially pushed aside for the immediate all hell breaks loose of minrathous vs. treviso. he's a bit reserved so i realized it takes some intentional thought to understand him more and made myself emotional about the fact that he lost two fellow wardens he could call friends, who he was working closely with while they trained the griffons, and he doesn't let himself react to that at all. he says it himself in a conversation after: being a warden means death happens. he had urgent things to attend to, he never let himself experience the grief for more than a second :( and in a metaphorical sense, he has kind of adopted an orphan. the people who were caring for assan are dead and now he has this responsibility on his shoulders unexpectedly. he doesn't feel like he's good at this, he didn't ask to do this, but he cares about the griffons sooo much and its his duty to protect them ough... i also LOVE his reasoning for the wood carvings... making accurate portrayals of monsters to teach future generations, thats so fuckin good

this dialogue is amazing, especially with my rook's backstory:

from the bits and pieces ive heard about taash, i assumed they/them pronouns but that hasn't come up at all so i'm not entirely sure what to use atm! i did later on get that one bit of dialogue from taash's mom about how taash "acts like a man sometimes" so maybe it's being built up and we'll talk about it later? i think i'll use they/them until i know what the deal is

so, isabela is looking amazing and i was delighted to see her. completely decked out in gold and with a kickass hat, as she should be <3

then neve returned and she was fairly understanding, all things considered ;w; she's a bit distant with me and doesn't wanna talk about it for now but shes baaack

loved this hehe taash and emmrich have hilarious banter; took them back to the necropolis for some side quests and it was so funny. one of the first ones i got was taash telling emmrich not to do "weird stuff" with their body if they died and that rook would get their body sdfgmf

im also loving emmrich and bellara's relationship. how excited she was to meet him, how he's insisting she doesnt need to be formal with him, how theyre talking shop together, and emmrich is looking out for her, making sure she's resting.... blessed

another i liked a lot, less for being funny, more for what it says about taash and the brutal venatori lore. damn dude

as per my usual tendencies, i've been doing everything except the main quest. spent a bit of time in the catacombs and in rivain, exploring, looting, doing side quests. i love it uvu just experiencing these new places and being a completionist about it. returned to dock town to see how messed up it is, and it was definitely hard to see the shadow dragons' base torn apart and splattered with blood. the mood on the street is rough, for real. i'm glad i took neve and davrin, feel like they were the best for it, neve because this is her home and i want to provide whatever support i can with her, and davrin because there was blight to deal with. i just love how impactful it can be to take certain companions on certain quests. i always take the ones who are closest to either the location or what we're doing even if it isnt required (like taking bellara on emmrich's recruitment since she's the one who got in contact)

did taash's first personal quest with feeding the birds, it was fantastic. love learning more about my companions. the bit about being multicultural really resonated as well. being a qunari rook in general here adds a lot, but especially with my own added backstory

had to stop and eat, then nap lmao but im meeting morrigan next, then i'm eager to see more of the anderfels (plus thats where all the next tough bosses are >:3 im comin for them)

WHAT I THINK OF EACH BETTER IN BLACK COUPLE, IN THE ORDER THEY APPEARED ON THE ROSTER.

Wessa -> EXCITEMENT LEVEL 9/10. i always want to see more of these two and am curious about what they may do in paris. i'm picky with wessa content and very finicky with it, but i am currently cautiously optimistic about liking the story. if i do i think i will be a bit more satisfied with wessa's canon storyline/content as i want to see them in an established relationship. i'm so interested in what the little crystal ball/snowglobe on the cover means and kinda hope they get into some magical mayhem.

Clace -> EXCITEMENT LEVEL 7.5/10. I like Clace and they give me nostalgic feelings, so it will be fun to catch up with them. They're not, like, an all-time favorite ship, but I like them together and am curious what theyre like as an adult couple.

Arianna -> EXCITEMENT LEVEL 9/10. I'll admit that this ship is one i have some complicated feelings about, but i like them a lot anyway. they're one of the most interesting/compelling dynamics in the TSC canon to me even if i don't think they're thomastairherondaisy-like soulmates. i think that this story is a good choice because their story feels unfinished, and to properly conclude their storyline we need to see them have some conversations and make some compromises. i'm really rooting for them and am excited to see how their relationship works/changes.

Herondaisy -> EXCITEMENT LEVEL 1000/10. i mean, it's herondaisy. Did you really expect anything less? i'm pumped because i want to see them domestically after they acknowledge that they're married and in love. there's going to be a 2nd wedding rune scene, which is awesome and im hyped, but i also think we're probably gonna get some honeymoon adventure content of both of them and i am even MORE excited for that. i like how cordelia is running and james is reachng after her on the cover like "i love my wife she's so adventurous but come baaack. wait for meee." and YES??? good god. this one is going to be so good. and im so curious what the pomegranates are??? yeah??? i think something about being invincible because of persian myth. maybe it's because they're soulmates. an unstoppable duo. i'm gushing lol @angeldaisies @hanelizabeth. i need to stop but this will definitely happen again when i get to the thomastair story.

Sebastian and SQ -> EXCITEMENT LEVEL 8.5/10. okay i KNOW this one's controversial, and i get why one might be upset if their favourite ship did not make the cut. but like. okay. i am SO excited for this story. this is going to be DARK. this is going to be TWISTY. this is going to be the dark horse of the bunch, fundamentally fucked up and horrifying. doomed by the narrative. i'm so excited that this story is there because it's going to be so tonally unique. i think cassie wanted to write something truly fucked up, i think she has the talent to pull it off perfectly, and i am fucking pumped.

Jemma -> EXCITEMENT LEVEL 2/10 for the setting. it'll be cool seeing another institute while they're on their travel year. but otherwise i'm not vibing. i expected it fully though so it's fine, this is the only one in the set i'm considering a throwaway for me that i will for sure dislike. But that's okay! because next up is...

Thomastair -> EXCITEMENT LEVEL 1000/10. guys. look. these are the people whose love i am myself in love with. these are the people that make me believe in hope, and healing, and the power of getting better together and doing better. and we havent seen them in a lot of established relationship, so im glad to do so here. AND IN A ROMCOM. YES. and we're definitely getting content of them playing with zachary. which is like, a dream come true for me since a) i adore that kind of story, and b) zachary is such an important part of alastairs arc. i also think they're going to babysit him and everything that can go wrong will. he's lost! he's rolling away! ahhh! oh it's going to be great. like the herondaisy story this is definitely going to be beloved by me. there's no way to make me not like it. this is going to be one of my comfort stories for the rest of my life, i can tell. like nbs or cls or eet or the herondaisy story or the matthew novella. the thomastair story goes into this special and exclusive category. but yea im gushing again because they're soulmates and i love them <333

Kierarktina -> EXCITEMENT LEVEL 6/10. Yes, i am not really a kierarktina fan, but hear me out. I find their relationship interesting, and they have a lot of things that really don't work. but I think a story where they begin to unpack these differences would be astounding. Also sue me i'm interested in the horse on the cover, much like Ken in the barbie movie.

Sizzy -> EXCITEMENT LEVEL 7.5/10. another ship that while not an all-time favourite is nostalgic and beloved by me. and we've barely seen them at all since TMI, so it will be great to know what they're up to.

Lukelyn -> EXCITEMENT LEVEL 6.5/10. do i care about this couple? no. i don't dislike them, but i'm meh on them. BUT i LOVE the circle, and it said that it took place in the past. we might get another circle story! But also... i want to see Ragnor and think he might appear here??

OKAY BUT THIS HAS BEEN BOTHERING ME. Megatron is a poet, obviously there are playwrights and artists and shit, we know that functionalism is very very stupid, like Owl House Coven levels of stupid. But were there ever art bots. Poet bots. Is anyone's alt a typewriter. Or is it like in humans, where artistic expression like song, dance and art are behaviors that everyone can do.

Yknow, one of the things I have enjoyed immensely about this comic is that the big ideological issues theyre having problems with are ridiculous. In a lot of media there's this "justified" oppression trope that @fernacular has a lot more interesting thoughts on--but the idea is more or less that sometimes the analogy the writers are trying to get at fails because the oppression is rooted in some kind of Real Reason. In Zootopia there is history between predators and prey in that predators DID used to eat prey. In DA, baby mages can explode into village eating nightmare demons at random, which justifies the local's fear of magic in general.

Here? All the stuff about constructed cold, forged, MTOs, functionalism--its as stupid as real-life racism, in that it's a made up story that is contradicted by reality. Here, its like, God made you a car or whatever, or a helicopter. You can't be anything else. In fact, it is a SIN to try to be!

And yET. ANYTHING can be replaced! And all of these bastards are so old, they've Ship of Theseus'ed themselves to hell and back. Anyone still alive. Its stupid on its face and thats with intention. Like the Horrors of War, this comic takes a grindingly real approach to concepts of the sacred, the profane, and the self.

I was talking to @polyhexian on the way to work today and another thing that popped up in this respect was the relationship these bots have to their sense of who they are. "Their bodies are so transitional. Anything can be replaced". And this is also a comic that, incredibly, about near mono gender asexual robots has a ton to say about things like rape, the sacred nature of the body vs its condition as worthless garbage--with both of those things being held in contention alongside each other.

Just like humans.
