2017; A Year in Review
Hey guys,
I am usually pretty quiet on the writing front, as I’m a particularly poor writer. However this year was a gooden, so I think that it deserves a year in review.
A recap before the actual cap: What did I learn this year?
All you need is love
Mushy but as I learn each year, the most important. I think the nature of a freelance life is that you spend more time hustling and less time on your own life - which sucks sometimes. Every year when I look back I ask myself if I’d change anything and the only part is to spend more time with loved ones. Also, this was my first year living with Nicholas - my fantastical partner and my little sister Lucy. I’ll tell you what, I have enjoyed the hell out of doing nothing but eating dinner and maybe an episode from time to time, with these two every night.
Stress will kill you (eventually)
Although this year was my most successful (measuring my merit, opportunities and cashola), this was also my most unwell year. Unfortunately for me, stress tends to directly correlate with my health. When I’m feeling particularly sorry for myself, I like to call 2017 the year of the migraine. Depressing - but just being transparent ya’ll. Still trying to work out that hustle/health balance.
What goes around comes around
I had a lot of incredible opportunities this year and almost all of them came from donating my time to earlier projects that I believed in. That’s not to say I endorse working for free - because I absolutely don’t. In the times I did not work for money - I try and organise a trade of some description.
Okay, let’s get into highlights
Col McElwaine and I did a collaboration show ‘Australianarama’ at Analogue Gallery. This was the best. I got to work with Col, and through this he became one of my best mates. I got to work with Analogue gallery which was seamless. We both got to sell out our show - need I say more. Our friends and family (my Nanny Mac too) filled the whole gallery and I had a baller night.
I(we) painted a mural at First Coat. This has been a long term goal for me. An incredible experience. I got to meet so many of my idols. I got better at muralling. And probably the most special part was having my sister Lucy as my assistant - Spend time with your family ya’ll, chances are they’re great.
I spoke on a panel and ran 2x workshops at The Design Conference. Another long term goal. I spoke on a panel alongside Lauren Hom, Kelly Thompson, Nadia Hernandez and Cyrcle (All people I HUGELY admire) and I hosted a drawing workshop for Ironlak and a tablet workshop for Wacom (that Dean Poole and Wayne Thompson attended *Shamelessly name-drops and drops jaw*). Which brings me to my next highlight.
I got sponsorship from both Wacom and Ironlak. This pretty much means, as brands they deck me out with great stuff and support me. I also had my big old (young) nogin in the window-front of all Australian Ironlak stores. I also filmed a cool video with Ironlak - you can watch it here if you like.
I accepted a roles as Senior UX/UI Designer at Khemistry (4days/week). Yes - for those who don’t know, I have an adult job besides art. Khemistry is a fantastic agency based in Brisbane that I have gotten the opportunity to work on some meaningful and award-winning projects at. Which brings me to my next highlight…
We got some awards! I (along with my amazing team) was the recipient of 5x BADC (Brisbane Advertising and Design) Awards - 3 Gold and 2 silver, for my work on ourstory.qso.com.au/ and artsandminds.org.au. My work was also finalist in 4 categories at the AGDA (Australian Graphic Design) Awards, for digital and mobile design, UX design, Design for Good and Website design.
I started teaching at Shillington college. This has been a particularly challenging and rewarding experience. It has taught me how better to communicate with my own juniors and in communication in general.
I taught a TDKTuesdays workshop - I love TDK and all that they do. It was great to give my time to them and contribute to the design community of Brisbane a bit more.
I was a featured artist for LuluLemon’s campaign This is Yoga. See the images here. It was very humbling to be recognised by a global company as an influential artist - I also didn’t mind the free stuff that came with it (those guys make some great tights).
I traveled alot! In January I visited Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos with my family - which was a really special experience. I visited Melbourne and Sydneyfor a week each - saw lots of friends, did lots of fun things. And lastly Nick and I visited Japan - The best country in the world!
I ended the year with something I am probably the most proud of to date. In November I did a large scale (24x10meters) live artwork projection at QAGOMA. I was very honoured to be commissioned by Tourism Australia for this project. I have been visiting this gallery since I was small and to see my own work in it was such a humbling experience.
And lastly, I got nominated for QLD Young Achiever of the year! Doubtful that I’d actually win it, but a pretty lovely feeling to be nominated.
Alright, that’s probably enough of tooting my own horn. What does next year hold?
Well, heaps of stuff. My lil migraine brain is already bubbling over.
In january I am painting 2x murals for the Commonwealth games
A few cool guest lectures on UX/UI around town (Sydney and Brisbane)
I am visiting the US (SF and NYC - Any tips welcomed!)
I will be stocked at Makers Mrkt (my first store to be stoked in!)
I will be an employee at Khemistry (senior UX/UI Designer)
I’ll also be launching a new blog targeting at women in the tech/creative industry - this will really test my reluctance towards writing, but I feel that I have been very fortunate in my career path and have some stuff to pass on.
And thats it for now guys. See you in 2018.
