It's the way T2: Trainspotting tackles nostalgia. Like that's exactly it. The first movie was all nihilism, anti-"choose life", apathetic, depressing, but still glorious and colorful and fun because they were all young. The sequel completely acknowledges that and runs with it. The characters grow up and realize how much the world has changed. They hate where they ended up, and they blame each other or they blame the world but they can't handle that that might just be what life is. They're stuck with the aftereffects of a 20-year-old betrayal, but they're also desperately clinging to the beauty of a 20-years-gone adolescence and friendship. They're "tourists in their own youth", watching flashbacks before their eyes, reliving the same moments with the same outcome because they haven't yet accepted how much they've grown, how much of their life has already gone by.
#T2 is the perfect middle-age crisis movie and no one can convince me otherwise#The way flashbacks to the first movie are interspersed throughout#The nods to iconic scenes never feel like pandering - they feel actually useful and important#WHEN THEY GO TO THE SAME VALLEY WHERE TOMMY MADE THEM GO FOR A HIKE WHERE RENTON SAYS IT'S SHITE BEING SCOTTISH#AND THEN THEY DECIDE TO GET BACK ON HEROIN#THEN IN T2 THEY GO THERE IN MEMORIAM TO TOMMY BUT IT'S A DISASTER AND THEY RELIVE THEIR PAST GUILT#AND AGAIN THEY DECIDE TO GET BACK ON HEROIN AGAIN#HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF THEYRE STUCK IN A CYCLE#sorry I re watched Trainspotting yesterday and re watched T2 today and I just love these movies#My analysis isn't the most articulate but just. These sad struggling men have my heart.#EVEN THE LAST GODDAMN SCENE - IT STARTS OUT AS A REPETITION AND THEN IT TAKES A DIFFERENT TURN BECAUSE HE'S COMING TO TERMS WITH EVERYTHING#WITH HOW HE USED TO BE AND HOW HE STILL IS AND HOW LIFE GOES ON AND ON#trainspotting#t2: trainspotting
