Last Sunday reading "39 Doors to Hell: The Book of Agent Huykoch."

In a universe far from our understanding, where mysteries enveloped reality and enigmas ruled the cosmos, there existed a phenomenon known as the "39 Doors to Hell." These doors, shrouded in legend, portrayed an intricate web of pathways into the abyss. Each of them was distinct, bearing peculiarities that would both beckon and terrify those who dared approach.

This tale belongs to one of those doors, a portal guarded by an unassuming robot. Agent Huykoch, a seasoned explorer of the uncharted realms, stood before it, initially unaware of the enigma which lay ahead.

The door was deceptively ordinary, designed to blend seamlessly with its surroundings, yet it possessed an irresistible allure. Its entire structure bathed in crimson hues, it was as though it whispered to passersby, luring them closer with a promise of revelations hidden behind its many locks. Keys, both old and new, dangled from a wall-mounted rack, accompanied by a sign which read "New keys for you lockers." It was an open invitation, or so it seemed.

The place exuded an unpleasant, moldy scent, reminiscent of the mysteries clunging to the very air. The allure was heightened by the endless stream of travelers, lost souls or curious wanderers, who ventured into the door, their eyes filled with hope and despair. Yet, as they entered, their voices were forever silenced.

The robot guarding the door appeared, at first glance, to be an unremarkable guardian. It was covered in a sleek, space-crafted suit, its surface slowly gathering dust and the delicate artwork of spiderwebs. Neglected for years, it stood there with a distant look on its face, as if entrapped in the vivid embrace of a beautiful dream, oblivious to the despair unfolded before it.

The doors played host to a peculiar symphony, a symphony of sounds and emotions which seemed to flow in a slow, enchanting rhythm. The melodies whispered secrets before vanishing into the unknown, much like the souls ventured in. It was a music and remarkable red light pulled Agent Huykoch towards the door.

Amidst the silent screams and fading echoes, Agent Huykoch sensed his purpose crystallizing. He had long known this enigmatic portal held the answers he had sought, and it was time to unravel its mysteries. No one emerged from within, and the agonized cries of those who entered haunted his dreams. It was time to reverse the fate which had ensnared so many, to confront the door and unmask its secrets.

With determined steps, he advanced, his senses alert and his spirit unyielding. The challenge lay ahead, to decipher the secrets of the "39 Doors to Hell," and Agent Huykoch was resolute in his quest. The door beckoned, and he was prepared to confront its alluring invitation.

We shall leave Danglars, gripped by the demon of hatred, trying to poison the shipowner's ear with some malicious libel against his comrade, and follow Dantès who, after walking along the Canebière, took the Rue de Noailles, entered a small house on the left side of the Allées de Meilhan and hastened up the four flights of a dark stairway. There, holding the banister with one hand, while the other repressed the beating of his heart, he stopped before a half-open door through which he could see to the back of a small room.

In this room lived Dantès' father.

Wow! What a way to wake up on a Sunday morning! Thank you Jonathan for this amazing review! You’ve captured the essence of the story and the characters perfectly. REVIEW: @rainbow.readerjsw My first book of 2023 started off with a bang (or several 😏) thanks to Matthew Dante and the third book of the Rough Edges series, Devouring Sin. This time around it’s Patrick’s story, a memorable character who has appeared in the previous installments, and the highlight of this book is experiencing him as a fully human character, getting to understand his background, insecurities, and the tenderness hiding underneath his tough exterior. By now if you have read this author’s work you’ve most likely tuned in for the spice and steam, and there is plenty of that here, written in glorious, blushing detail, and nearly makes my e-reader screen explode. This time I was more taken by the continued exploration of childhood trauma and the way it shapes adulthood, relationships, and personal choices as well as the continued inclusion of found family and unconditional love among Patrick and his crew. Patrick’s love interest, Skyler, was a worthy addition to this group of characters. I found his vulnerability refreshing amid all the mystery and darkness that is the main plot of this book, and enjoyed his performance scenes and interactions with Seth, Mickey, and, of course, his budding relationship with Patrick. The mystery/suspense plot line was well developed and accessibly written, being engaging enough without getting too into itself and bogged down with extraneous detail. I particularly appreciated Patrick and Ollie’s development and how everything was tied into the thriller aspects.
